I'm totally not 'with it' anymore, but the more mainstreamy things I can think of are The Gossip, which might be good for such an occasion. Beth Ditto is kinda all empowering all the time. Also, Karen O has a similar vibe.

Early Pretty Girls Make Graves always made me feel grrrrrrrish. Oh, and I think 'Hinterland' by Shannon Wright is one of the most simple yet brilliant songs I have ever heard.

Thanks for all the good tips thus far!
And, FWIW, she's instigating the divorce---it was a long time coming, and it's a Good Thing. :-)

I just want to help her feel strong. I'm thinking I need to dig out some of my old CDs.......

I'm a big Joan Jett gal when the going gets rough. Older Lush is also great, Kristin Hersch era Throwing Muses, maybe? I really try to stay away from any songs that are break-up related, even if they've got a big f-you vibe. Sonic Youth, Archers of Loaf, Gang of Four, and The Stooges are all top choices.

Goalsies:
160 - new handbag
150 - new tattoo, botanical print.
140 - new pants. Nice ones not just cheapies from Target.
130 - Two or three new outfits including shoes. Mmmm...shoes...

This is so funny....I actually just did this....I made two playlists. One is called the heartbreak play list and the other is called the F you playlist....I thought I was a wierdo....o.k. let me go look....I didn't save it! Ok. Here are songs I know I had Beck-F***king with my head, the following are all Ani Difranco-Angry Anymore, Untouchable Face, Gravel, Back Around, Face up and Sing, Make Me Stay, Knuckle Down, Coming up (This is actually more political, but it makes me feel empowered), I'm no heroine (it just always makes me feel better), Evolve, Dilate......o.k. that is a list of my favorite artist....some of it's still kinda sappy, I guess I'm just a sappy sort of person. Hope this helps. Sorry for your friend...

Nirvana "Negative Creep"
Hole "Asking For It"
Subhumans "F**K YOU" (ultimate anger song!! LOL!)

And I don't know her stuff very well, but didn't PJ Harvey have a lot of angry songs?

Maybe 'Bruise Violet' Babes in Toyland or 'Don't Need You' by Bikini Kill. I think so L7 would be good, too. Also 'Madman' by the Hives. Not too many people like them because they're 'big' but I'm satisfied with anything coming from a Scandinavian country.
I had some more but I forgot them. Darn.

Thankfully, not me, but I have a friend about to start divorce proceedings, and I'd like to burn her some empowering tunes.

FWIW, she's an ex-drummer, educator, mom, student, feminist, race-relations advocate, lives in Chicago.

All input welcome! Think empowering b*tchy songs.:-)
