Wow, Vegpunk. I know it probably doesn't help to hear, but 3 lbs. is UNDER what I've heard the average is for people gaining weight over the holidays. You should pat yourself on the back!

So how did everyone fare? I only lost 4.5 lbs, I am now 190. BUT I did do everything else - only overate 2-3 times, exercised at least 4x/week, did weights, etc. Hopefully I will keep at it and lose more next month. I will post up Feb. goals and a new challenge soon.

He he. I feel better today. It was warmer and blue skies out. I exercised more, slept less. My dad is bugging me though. He talks very loudly and stays on the phone for hours--8am until 1pm, short break, more phone calls, day after day, plus long evening calls. He tends to occupy both computers and the tv. Makes life frustrating. My ears hurt from hearing him and from wearing earplugs so often. Grrr. But I got out of going to dinner -- a fear of mine--with someone. I was asked to go to work today. good.

I'm down to 190.5, which, I think, is 4 lbs. from the start of the month. I HOPE HOPE HOPE I can lose another 2 lbs. by the end of the goal, as 6 total was my minimum goal for the month.

I overate big time last night. The second time this month. emoticon

I couldn't get online to do my part-time job or log in to SparkPeople so it kind of got away from me, what I was eating.

Babypop, i'm right there with you. It is frustrating when you work out and eat right and manage to not lose any weight. I don't know what it is. If you are doing the same work out then try to change it up a bit, that sometimes helps with plateaus. I'm just trying to remember to be patient and see what happens. Working out and eating healthy can't lead to weight gain.

How is everyone doing so far?

I have been doing EVERYTHING I said I'd do - not spending too mcuh money, cooking a little more, getting extra exercise, and STILL I seem to be stuck at 193-194. This is SO FRUSTRATING b/c I have been eating a lot better than I did for the last half of 2007, and hav eonly gone over my calorie range ONCE in eating...I don't know what to do!!!

Way to go, veg punk!

I am feeling you on the sickness...mine's allergy/sinuses, but it's hard to do a vigorous cardio workout when I can feel my chest rattle when I breathe and I sound like I'm about to hack up a lung!

Well it's never too late to start a goal and stick with it, or start over if things haven't been going so well.

Last night, I pigged out for the first time all year (granted...the year was only 2 weeks old). I added the food to today's entry (since I think it was technically after midnight), so now I don't have much left to work with - an apple and an orange. May drink a big glass of H20 to tide me over till morning. REsisting the urge to go over two nights in a row, though!

I am right with FAKEPLASTICTREE {love the name by the way =)} I need to get back into the swing of things with working out. I was going strong and then I fell off the wagon.. But I have been good with the eating.. Now if I can put the good eating with the working out I will be good... Well I worked out this morning doing some crunches and tonight I plan on attempting to restart my attempt at running.. we shall see how that goes.. if not I am definitely doing the elliptical

well i'm a bit gutted. i promised myself that I would run 3 times a week and I did it twice...then got the flu! so I've been ill for the past week. Now I have to motivate myself to start again! ugh!

I do love it once I start going to the gym though.
So I'm starting again tomorrow and hopefully I won't get ill this time!

My aim this month is just to record all the exercise I do on a wall chart.
Next month I'm going to start recording all food in a diary and try to eat breakfast every morning.

It''s only when you have let go of everything that you are free to do anything.

193 - 193.5 today, for a loss of 1-1.5 lbs. A little disappointing, being as I have been so diligent. Going to shoot for being 191-191.5 next week. How is everyone else doing?

$400/month for one person seems like a lot for me but I am sure it depends on where you live. I did a budget last night and after all my bills and stuff, I only have a little over $300 for groceries, eating out, etc., so I am going to have to do better meal planning so I can eat for less. Also, if I remember correctly, you are a vegan so some of the things you buy may be more expensive than what I do.

I really do recommend that Get Rich Slowly web site, though, VP. It's sort of based on Dave Ramsey (who is surprisingly non-irritating despite having a wide following among church-goers) where you pay yourself first (savings), then arrange your debt from least to highest and just snowball paying everything off.

okay, I have paid $80 on each of my 2 credit cards. I put $10 back on one, but paid cash for today's $20 purchase so it is not so bad. I have spent $30 roughly on frivolities this paycheck. not bad. I also skipped buying binge food this grocery shopping trip. I did, however, overspend and had to sacrifice $40 of my money to compensate (my dad usually picks up the tab for groceries). And BTW, is $400 per month bad for groceries?? I don't spend anything on extras like coffee or restaurants b/c I don't dine out.
So far, no exercise. I have been busy, busy, busy. From before dawn until I go to bed with barely the time to sit down for tea.

Wow, Goldie! We sound like twinsies as far as the last 4 of those go!

Maybe you could join the January challenge in conjunction with your goals for the month. All it is is just tracking together (and I *have* been good about tracking even if I go over, though, knock on wood, two and a half days in to the year and that hasn't happened so far.)

I haven't been using ANY sort of tracking system lately... so here goes...

January: Turning 30 at the end of the month, so would like to feel a little better in the clothes I have already (6-8 lbs)

*Strength train at least 4 days weekly
*20 minutes of cardio 6x a week
*Drink water (aim for 8 glasses)
*Walk my dog daily (he likes it... and it's good for me!)
*More vegetables
*Track food DAILY! even if I'm off my calorie range
*Be aware and log emotional eating... but don't beat myself up for it.
*Not quit! If I can last 21 days... I have created a habit!

REWARD: A new comfy/workout outfit (the one I have SHOULD be too big!)

***5 lbs of MUSCLE = size of 3 tangerines***
***5 lbs of FAT= size of 3 grapefruits***

Do you guys want to do an informal challenge of logging in every day, tracking, and eating within the calorie range? Seems like a good way for newbies to get into the habit, and oldies (like moi) to get themselves back on track!

Great goals and game plans, everyone.

Santera, I don't mean to come down on you, but 10 lbs. for 1 month is a *lot*. It's not unheard of (especially if you're just starting and lose quickly or a lot of water weight) but just also keep in mind that even a loss of 6-8 lbs. is a good amount for a month. Good luck!

Hey everyone!

My goals for january are to:
* log in to SP everyday
* exercise at least 3 times a week
* stay within my calorie/fat range
* I'd like to lose about 8 pounds by the end of the month.

Last year I quit smoking & gained 25 pounds (!!!) so this year I'd like to lose that 25 pounds & then at least 25 more. So my goal is 50 pounds this year. I know I can do it if I focus.

Thanks BabyBop for the info on wesabe.com I'll have to check that out...

My Mini-Goals starting on the 7th, and for the month of January are:

1. Log into Spark EVERYDAY, and log food and exercise.
2. Drink 32oz of water before lunch, and after for a total of 64 oz of water at work.
3. Live for the day, and not get caught up in future plans or past troubles.

My action steps I suppose, are to set up reminders on outlook to log into Spark every morning, until I remember on my own. I will buy 2 32oz water bottles and keep them at my desk. And place a sticky on my monitor to DRINK WATER. And I will practice zazen for a minimum of 15 minutes in the morning, to help with being in the now.

I think this with my usual exercise schedule and meal plan is a good start to the new year... and new improved me...

How's everyone doing two days in? I went to the grocery last night and got lots of fruit, a bag of salad, and some raisins, popcorn, and almonds to keep in my desk at work. I made myself a frozen organic burrito and salad for dinner after the gym and even had two Twinkies (200 calories for a package - who knew!) Don't intend to make junk food a habit, but I'd been craving them for months and hadn't eaten one in years, probably. I picked them up in the express lane and was shocked to see they had comparatively fewer calories than other sweet/fatty junk food (though still, obviously, calorie dense.) Came in two days in a row under my calories!

Also trying to cut out online "browsing" for items I might want to buy - too tempting. Bookmarked Get Fit Slowly and Get Rich Slowly, and signed up for Wesabe.com. I think it's kind of similar to SparkPeople in a way, only for finances. I haven't had time to do anything other than sign up, yet. Hopefully I've time to explore it this weekend.

Hope everyone else is on track. I was sick earlier in the week so hopefully I can get my one-day of non-gym activity in on Saturday at some point.

Great goals, the both of you!

Veg, I don't know about you, but I've found that better financial discipline usually falls in line when I am eating better and exercising regularly.

Even though I ended up losing weight overall in 2007, last year was not a good one. I've found that my life generally sucks in odd-numbered years. 2005 - cancer, 2007 - Dad died. 2008 is looking up, so far! :)

Hey everyone,
Haven't actually been working too closely with Sparkpeople for a while now and it shows. But its a whole new year and I want to get back. I haven't strayed toooo far away but I did give in to a couple of my worst habits. So, with that being said, my goals for January:
1. drink no more than once a week
2. check in with spark every day

I only have two but they both a pretty big deal for me. One is to lower the drinking back down to once a week and the other is to check in with Spark every day. I want to track my nutrition, my workouts, and write up a quick blog everyday just to keep me going. Thats what definitely worked when I was losing a lot this time last year. So, yeah. I think I can do them because I've done it before. emoticon

Next Goal: out of the 210's!
Reward: much needed haircut

push * consistency * determination * drive * forward * sweat * cry * harder * strength * laugh * believe * see it * patience * feel it

Okay, my goals for 2008: Svelte by my 30th b-day, money saved up.

To-Do for January towards that end (losing 6-8 lbs):

* 8-10 cups of H2O per day
* 35 minutes of cardio 3x/week
* 1 full weight training circuit/week
* 1 day of non-gym activity/week (walking, jogging, bike riding, batting cages, etc) or group fitness (yoga, pilates, aerobics, etc)
* Cooking more
* Grocery once every 7-14 days (fresh fruits, veggies, dairy, etc)
* Staying within my calorie range (1200 - 1550 on days I work out)
* Not buying anything I don't need (gum and soda can be bought on grocery trips, but not at gas stations or at work, eating out limited to 2x/month, shows limited to 2x/month, and anything I *want* - such as a new bike or new music - that is a "non-need" purchase can only be bought with money earned from selling something I already own)

I lost ~40 lbs in 2007 and want to lose about another 60-70 by September 2008 (when I turn 30), so wish me luck!

Oh, and my reward for losing for January is a haircut/color.

I am out of town right now and the gym's scale here isn't synched with the one I normally use, so I will post my beginning weight on Thursday and I guess will weigh in on Thursdays after that, since Jan 31st also falls on a Thursday. Wish me luck!

Established Punk Rock slash and burners should know the drill. For the unacquainted and newbies, I'll fill you in on the short version of this thread.

*Pick a few goals for the month (or even just one day or week at a time)
*Try to have at least one goal that isn't just the broad, "I want to lose x lbs this month." (e.g. getting enough water, stretching, doing x minutes of cardio activity x days per week, handling stress better etc.)
*Here's the tricky part: also try to include a detailed plan of how you will attain your goals. (e.g., if your goal is, "I want to refrain from emotional eating this month," then your specific plan could be, "Instead of eating through my emotions, I'll drink a tall glass of water, and work on a craft project or some other creative endeavor, and post on the SP message board for support.)
*Finally, think of a little reward you'd like to treat yourself to at the end of the month for reaching your goal.

Also, check previous "Mini-Goals" threads to see kind of how they work - it's very informal, and please check up on each other at least once a week! It's how we keep one another motivated.

Finally, here is a corny thing I posted in another thread and have posted in my bedroom and on my desk at work. Please copy it, save it on your desktop, print it put, and put it wherever you can see it if you think it will motivate you!

JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once.

I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things I can correct, and accept those I cannot.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I'll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking.

Just for today, I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I'm a smoker, I'll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully -- if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it's only around the block.
