I'm starting to take down the decorations and pack them away. I have a dgd here to help. I hope the get the tree out as it's dropping needles and making a mess now. DH can take the outside lights down later.

Tina, we've had years like that too and I hated it! When our kids were in the Christian school and in 4 different classes, they drew names for gifts and EACH had a party in their classes, for which they needed some kind of refreshment provided--plus the Christmas program (and all the refreshments) and then the same thing at church, with DH and me singing in the choir as well. We were so busy doing "Christmas activities" that we didn't give ourselves time to enjoy it.

I'm not saying that's the case with you--but it sure was for me!

I still have a pet peeve about teachers having the kids draw names and do gift exchanges. Even if they set a modest limit ($10 is low now), it has no consideration for the family who has 4+ kids and is living from payday to payday AND trying to finance their own family's celebration. I hated feeling like Ebenezer Scrooge! That was another fabulous reason for homeschooling! Then we could plan our own giving and budget our time and $ accordingly.

I still have a tendency to over-plan and over-fill my time. Learning balance is a lifelong process for me.

What a wonderful tradition! Nice and personal. We usually do the Operation Christmas Child and take tags from the tree at church.

Did I tell you guys that one year we were so busy with Christmas programs, running the giving tree and a church book sale and I don't remember what else, and we never even got our tree in the stand?? Makes for a great memory. lol

We are starting the 12 Days of Christmas tonight. This is one of those traditions that I've kept from when I was a child. Each night for the next 12 days we'll deliver gifts to another family anonymously as the Spirit of Christmas. My family loves doing it. The family we've chosen this year really needs something to brighten their life as they are dealing with major health issues with one of their children. Hopefully, it will bring them as much joy as it brings us!

We finally got the tree up and decorated last night. Ds worked for a tree farm this last month, so was given a tree; nice of them! As I go through the boxes of stuff tho, I'm wondering where all the ornaments that go in the little boxes are. Feels like I'm missing lots of stuff! Will have to really go through everything and reorganize after Christmas. Dd and I stayed up late watching a Christmas movie. Tonight is her band/choir concert.

I did find the table runner and placemat set my mom and her sister made. (They stretched the materials for 2 sets to 4 sets so each of Mom's sisters got a set, too.) Anyway, the runner has Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus on each end, and the placemats are buildings set in Bethlehem with The Star above them.

DH finally got some lights up on the outside of the house. He worked a 12 hr overtime shift on Sunday, or he probably would've finished them.

I've started on the Christmas sewing, so need to stay focused on that!

I LOVE hearing about everyone's Christmas ideas and traditions!!!

We always loved reading Jothams Journey, Bartholomews passage ( cannot think of the other one!!) Wonderful stories, great discussion!

Sounds like everyone is have a wonderful Christmas season with their family!

I loved it when the kids were smaller , so many exciting things to do to make the season so special !

Well, I did put out a few decorations, today will do more. My dh did put up our tree....

We used to always go hiking and pick out our own tree... so much fun!!! BUT , my allergies the last few years just got too bad , so we went to an artificial.... It seems very strange not being a part of a church this year, but we are making our own memories and actually doing different ministry things we just never had time for because we were so busy doing what the church wanted....

So we are very excited about this year!

I love that gift idea!

Today,we took 4 of the grands up the mountain and hunted down our tree. We drove the truck as far as we could go in 4WD, and then started walking up the road looking for what we wanted. The kids played in the snow, slid down the banks several times and we made note of a couple of nice trees that we might "come back to" if we didn't find anything better. As it turns out, we were about a mile from the truck when we found a tree and cut it down. I don't know why it didn't occur to us that we were going to have to carry that thing all the way back to the truck, but it didn't! We drug it for a while, but the frozen snow was going to tear it up, so there was nothing to do but hoist it up onto our shoulders and pack it. Both of my shoulders are so bruised tonight! But I got my exercise in for the day :)

We brought it in and set it up immediately and we got started. DH and I wrapped about 8 strings of lights on it and then the kids helped to decorate it. The nativity sets are out, as are the nutcrackers, the candles and my musical carousel. Maybe tomorrow (if I am able to move) I'll set up the village and then we'll be pretty much done with the decorating.

What a nice gift idea! When the boys were small I did some Christmasy stenciling along with their handprints on placemats.

I'm hoping to get to some sewing projects this month! A few days organizing and I should have a new spot in the basement. :)

Hopefully getting our tree this weekend, but I have to finish my sewing projects because that is where the tree has to go!!

We will be getting out the decorations, the kids already started the advent calendar ( it is a cute magnetic nativity scene), and all of the Christmas movies are out!

I am going to make peppermint bark. The two little ones are going to put handprints in stepping stones for the grandmas, we did this with the older two a few years ago so we have to complete the set!

We're either going to decorate cookies or make popcorn balls. I'm still deciding. Then we'll play pass the parcel. It like hot potato, but with a present wrapped with lots of layer. In each layer of wrapping paper, there might be a little gift. We'll read a couple of stories. Sing some carols and I'm sure that will take up our whole party.

We just do stockings mainly for the kids. They are filled with little gifts or toys and See's candy (usually unwrapped). I'll usually put in a little something for my husband or a treat for myself, but nothing big.

Parties sound fun, Jenny! What will the kids do at your Christmas party? We used to have cookie decorating parties when the boys were younger. Maybe I should let dd host one of those this month.

I love the idea of everyone filling the stockings, Terri. Our family pretty much gave them up as a group, and just do ones for our kids at home. Think I'm going to do one for my dad this year tho. He's so hard to shop for, and I drew his name again. I think he really enjoys opening gifts tho.

Tradition has our stocking stuffers rolled in tissue paper. How do the rest of you do them?

I had some of the grands help me put up all the stockings last Saturday. We put up stockings for the entire family and then share the filling of them. People stop by my house periodically and just drop things into the stockings if they find something that they want to give to someone. There always ends up being too much candy, but then, there are lots of other cute things too.

I hope to get the tree this week. We may end up cutting one off of our property too, but it will most likely end up being a "Charlie Brown" tree if we do. I must have a fresh tree, but just can't pay the exorbitant prices they ask at the tree lots. DH will probably be putting lights up on the house this week, too--even if it's just a few every night.

We've decorated the tree last night, but we still need to get the house lights up and put out the rest of the decorations. We're also planning to put decorations up at my mom's grave this week. We started reading Bartholomew's Passage for advent yesterday. I also have a large quilt with 24 pockets on it. I want to fill the pockets with different goodies, books, songs, movies, or activities we can do together each day. Any ideas would be welcome!

My youngest daughter and I are hosting a little Christmas party for her friends next Friday. And my 12 year old's birthday party is on Sat (not Christmas related). I believe we have a church Christmas party next weekend too so I need to check on that. We may be partied out the first weekend of the month! LOL! We're preparing for Nutcracker in 2 weeks and then our family will be seeing a professional Nutcracker too. We're also singing in a couple different church choirs this year (a youth one and an everybody one).

Nothing yet, other than cutting the tree from my land with older ds and dsil.
But I just found out there's something special going on at a local historical site, so younger ds and I may check it out.
I'll get decor out of the closet tomorrow and plan the menu for the visit of the adult children. =)

planned?

Our town has its Christmas doings this coming weekend. Dd will probably do the cookie decorating, see the magician, go for a hayride, and make some ornaments again. We went with another mom/dd last year; us moms had a great visit. emoticon

I'd like to start baking this week. Maybe. We'll decorate next week. How about you?
