Trust me, it piles on fast when you don't walk. I had 3 foot surgeries between Sept 08 and July 09. Ad 12 weeks of sitting with ice packs to recover and several rounds of steroids and you get 50 pounds before you know it.

I try to park on the other side of the parking lot .. not as close as possible (unless I'm in a hurry or my hip is bothering me). I agree that we really need to walk more .. it's just so integral to health.

Me too. I was horrified when D was diagnosed with the allergies and I was forced to start reading every label with a very critical eye. My husband and I lost 15 pounds without even trying when we first threw out all the foods with HFCS in them. We didn't know why but soon after that was when I stumbled on a book (Protein Power Life Plan) that talked about how HFCS works in the body.

That's why in Europe the food tastes so much better and I was able to go to Italy and eat pizza, pasta, and gelato every day and lose weight. That and they're walking based cultures, which we need to get back to.

Wow, I truly believe the IBS is just undiagnosed food intolerances/allergies. I'm not surprised that she does better out of the US, I think the US food industry is slowing killing us!! I try to eat minimally processed or unprocessed foods for the most part. I'm hoping Jamie's quest opens some eyes and minds!

That's like my cousin's wife. She was misdiagnosed with ulcerative colitis for years before she moved out of the country and her symptoms completely stopped. Turns out she's allergic to MSG, BHT, and a whole host of alphabet soup chemical additives.

I have not seen that website .. I'll be checking it out. I can tolerate some stuff, but in general I avoid what I can .. the symptoms I have are similar to IBS ...

BTW, I also think it's ridiculous that they mark products for milk, soy, nuts, etc but not for corn. Guess they don't want us to know how much we're really consuming. People keep saying it would ruin farmers if we quit using it BUT, I know for a fact that they closed down production on 3 fuel grade ethanol plants in the last 2 years because massive flooding here in the midwest drove up the need for corn in the food industry. They could easily replace the need.

I know. Luckily De seems to be growing out of hers. She no longer tests positive to allergies for any of it but she still has lactose intolerance and some level of corn. Hers is wierd though. She can tolerate a few pieces of corn in soup, or even the occasional bit of cornmeal breading (as long as it's not all cornbread.) However the more processed it gets, the worse the reaction is. Corn starch gives her stomach bloat. Worst is HFCS. If someone screws up and gives her a regular cola instead of a diet, her belly blows up like a blow fish and she's very hyper. It's like someone gave her 5 red bulls with a jolt cola chaser. Luckily she doesn't like cola so her restaurant choices are usually limited to water or 100% juice.

As for restaurants, I've taken her food in before. I even went to the trouble of getting the 4H camp menu and sending a cooler of marked, corresponding food for each meal and snack.

Have you seen this website? I love it. I have the symptoms page bookmarked because I've probably given it out 300+ times but the whole site is full of very valuable info. www.cornallergens.com/symptoms/corn-

The corn thing is the hardest since it's not common issue. You can find plenty of gluten free, soy free, etc .. but hard to find corn free! My dh and my 2 dd's can all read ingredient lists and know what to look for. Eating out is a risk since even if you give the server a list of what to look for they usually just go in the kitchen and ask if there's corn in the food. The cooks say no because there's no whole corn or corn meal/flour. I usually stick to the menu items I know I can eat, and I'm much less willing to try new dishes. Sad ...

Varina- My daughter has the same corn intolerance. It appears that yours is a bit more severe but I understand your dilema. When she was diagnosed with allergies and intolerances, I thought peanuts and eggs would be the hard part.

We make our own from whole wheat tortillas .. but Amy's are good too.

I remember my Mom trying to duplicate McDonald's special sauce .. she came pretty close too! Back in the day it was a mix of mayo, ketchup and relish .. pretty easy .. not sure what's in it now tho!

I am a from scratch cook .. mostly because I have a food intolerance to anything made from or derived from corn. Corn, corn syrup, corn starch .. then it gets hairy .. modified food starch, dextrose, maltodextrin, crystalline fructose .. and that's just a partial list. Trying to find food items (even organic) that are processed without any of these is tough. I was at a Dove party (it was nice, but 1/2 the stuff I couldn't even try!) last night and it was a nightmare asking the poor hostess for the packages of all the stuff so I could read it to find out if I could even taste the stuff. It is just easier to make it myself. I've even found recipes for faux-reos and princess cakes (like twinkies) for those special occasions.

You can definitely make or even buy healthy alternatives to junk food. Around here, the kids are in love with frozen burritos from Amy's, especially my 4yo.

I just watched the preview. I think that school lunches are about the bottom line, not what is healthy for kids.

Tambi, even when my kids were really young I avoided the kid menu as much as possible. When they were toddlers my dh and I would just ask for a plate and give them part of our dinners. This was great for us too! lol As they got older we would have them split a meal or order an appetizer as a meal. Now they usually order a regular item, and just bring a portion home.

We eat hot dogs and pizza too, but like you we control what kind/type. I have to say that Jamie is on the right track, and some dishes can be over-hauled (Like Meg here on Spark) to incorporate favorites in a healthy manner.

It's amazing how protective people are of their food! Guess it's because it helps us identify who we are; an integral part of our culture.

Tina, in Japan it's very common to try and eat at least 20 different things with each meal. The variety of food is amazing.

I have it on DVR and have watched the first 40 minutes plus I also watched the documentary on the changes he was able to bring to the british school lunch program. Jamie Rules! It's as simple as that.

WOW! Tina. It is so true, especially within the schools. I know that some schools now offer salad bars and such, but how children actually partake of it? I am so thankful that with homeschooling that I have the complete control of what my children eat. Do we have hot dogs? Yes. Do we eat pizza? Yes. But the how often is key. Plus we are always making it healthier. Whole wheat buns or crust. Lots of veggie toppings and less meat.

Truth be known, if you look at the nutritional values of restuarants' menus, that will make you sick to see how many calories, fat and sodium is loaded in the food. I've been trying real hard when we are going out to eat to check out that info. before we even leave the house and choose wisely. But for the children's menus, a healthly fare is almost non-existent. Okay, I went off on a tangent, but you get my point. Thanks for sharing that clip, Tina. It can be a real eye-opener for a lot of people.

Missed the preview of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. Anyone watch it?
http://abc.go.com/shows/jamie-olivers-fo
od-revolution.

If you scroll down it looks like you can see the first show in it's entirety.

Now I know my week's menu isn't near as bad as the family he's visiting in this clip, but think I'll wait to watch the show til after my guest leaves. I don't think we use near the number of vegetables he probably gets at home in Japan. lol Tho he has really loved eating out and eating all different sorts of foods!!
