My 3 steps to a healthy Thanksgiving are:
1) Go on a hike in the morning with the family
2) Have enough healthy recipes to make the choices easy(I'm making little Pecan Pie tarts instead of the entire pie - Chef Meg's recipe) and having a 9 inch plate.
3) When I'm done eating i'll put my plate away so I don't eat mindlessly while talking with friends and family.

Thank you for the challenge so I can look ahead and make it a great holiday all around and not have regrets afterwards.

Thought I'd bump this one up. You'll need to cut and paste the articles, but they are worth the work. :)

Thanksgiving is coming! Do you have a plan? While this holiday is a great chance to spend time with loved ones, it's also a great chance to get off-track with a healthy diet. You'll face lots of temptations on Thanksgiving, but if you've got a plan, it will be much easier to stay focused and working toward your goals!

Your challenge for this week is to think of 3 things you will do to stay on track this Thanksgiving. This could mean creating a few healthy dishes to share, limiting portion sizes, saying "no" to that slice of pecan pie, etc. Everyone is different, so the temptations you face will be unique to you. Consider what your weaknesses might be, and then develop a plan to fight them! In case you haven't seen them yet, here are some articles related to this topic:

LOL, very true. Tastes change if you bombard them long enough. Even my husband no longer buys "crappy white" if he's in charge of the bread purchases.

I made my pie crust and baked off the squash and brussel sprouts tonight. I'm totally going to wish I'd doubled the sprouts. I test drove one and they are SO GOOD! I cut them in half, blanched in salted water for 5 minutes and then drained them. Then I added a bag of frozen pearl onions, a couple of tablespoons of EVOO, at least 2 TBSP of chopped garlic, the zest of a lemon and salt and pepper. I roasted them until they started to turn golden. So good! I'm kind of happy that my stepdad and I are the only ones who eat them.

Wow! Nice choices!

I had to laugh when my ds complained because I bought Brownberry Ovens stuffing cubes. He said my homemade (using bread crusts and dry bread from my homemade fresh ground wheat bread) was better. Gotta love it!

Yes Jen, I do have a plan! I've been working on it and tweeking it for weeks. It helps that my step-dad has been diagnosed with food allergies to wheat, soy and corn and that my daughter is allergic to corn and my son is soy sensitive. I've been able to cut out a BUNCH of things the family always thought they needed at TG. My meats will stay the same (very small turkey, a duck, and a very small ham) but nearly all the sides are changing. Instead of sweet potatoes with a ton of butter and sugar, I bought butter nut squash to roast. Also having green bean casserole with homemade sauce and carmelized onions instead of mushroom soup and frenches fried onions. Brussel sprouts roasted with pearl onions will round out the vegs. I will still make stuffing but it's from oatmeal bread and I'm also going to make a loaf of oatmeal-irish soda bread instead of the white flour yeast rolls my gran used to make. Even the pie crust (because I'd probably get beaten if I didn't make a pumpkin pie) will be made from oatmeal. It tastes better anyway. Also making an indian style cranberry chutney, using agave syrup instead of brown sugar.

That's my plan. What's yours?

bumping. Coach Jen has some good ideas. Have you seen the Holiday Challenge? I'll post parts of it regularly after Thanksgiving.
