Apparently I haven't been getting notices about this thread; I didn't realize there had been activity this week.

I am closing this thread because I want to change the title. I'll make the new thread sticky.

Thanks!

I agree. My greatest hope -- knowing it will turn out well -- is PERSISTENCE !! Never give up! Giving up got me to a point of morbid obesity.

Lets hang in there! Plus, consider how far we have come and improvements we made regarding "diets" and exercise.... We should really look in the mirror and say "I am proud of me" hehe!! Happy Tuesday!

I agree, this will be a hard week. My daughter is baking (many for gifts) -- oh, those calories add up fast.

Good luck with the Christmas party. I'm sure you'll do fine.

Well I managed to raise my step average to 10,800 this week so I am pleased with that. now if I can just maintain it!

This is going to be the the most challenging week of the year for me. We have the office Christmas party, plus two others I have to go to and then on the weekend I have some Christmas baking that I have to do. I am just hoping to make it through the year without gaining.

Vegetarian Times has some good recipes this month. I also subscribed to VegNews and should be my first issue of that next week. Hopefully that will inspire me a little bit. lol

Wow! A lot of seem to be in health care.

I wear my pedometer all the time. I rarely intentionally don't wear it. If I CHOOSE not to wear it, it's probably b/c I'm going out for a nice evening and know I won't be walking much.

I agree about this time of the year. I work in a hospital and all the docs and patients bring us food this time of year. Not to mention everyone has to bring in their own goodies as well as plates they recieve from loved ones that they dont want tempting them at home. Last year the week around Christmas, I never even went into the break room because I knew I couldnt resist picking up just a little nibble of this or that and we know it all adds up.

I have been thinking of wearing a pedometer to work as well. I used to work day shift and did alot more walking than I do now on night shift. It would probably be good to see the deficit between the two shifts.

This IS a difficult time of year. I work in a nursing home and families (and staff) bring stuff in here too. Some days I do really well. Other days,... well, not so well.

I'm not sure how I would do if I lived alone. I guess I'd probably eat a little better, but would probably get in a rut -- and not cook so much giving myself the excuse of not being worth it for just one person (yes, I can be a bit lazy - lol). I'd probably also have more times when I would want to eat out of boredom.

I did really well yesterday -- got my exercise in - and it really helped my appetite. I hope I will keep it up.

Sounds like you're doing great and have a really good plan. Keep up the good work.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that at the end of the first week I averaged almost 9,000 points a day with the pedometer. That means that I will attempt to raise that average to 10,000 this week and then maintain that for the remainder of the year.

I am trying hard to stay on program Sunday - Friday. Saturday is my day off and I eat pretty much what I want Saturday evening for dinner including a "real" dessert (I will say that I am very good about baking something and slicing it and putting it in the freezer and thawing out one piece for Saturday night) and wine with dinner.

The next couple of weeks are going to be very difficult. Because I work in home health and hospice all of our grateful patients reward us by bringing in FOOD during the holidays and that office is filled from Thanksgiving until the end of the year with homebaked goodies - and that is my greatest weakness. This year I am attempting to avoid the office as much as possible. I am trying to do as much as possible by computer and only go in once a week. I am divorced and live alone so I have no excuses about family members wanting food left around, but I do have some issues with neighbors and friends. I am just going to do my best to curtail is as much as possible because last year I did gain all through the holidays and I have not forgotten that!

Hang in there!

Janet,

Mine's not as fancy -- The only 'personal' info I put into it is my weight and stride. (But I don't use it to track calories anyway).

I've found the same things to be true as you though. I'm a lot more active on the weekdays -- getting in the 10,000 steps or more is really not a problem. But often on the weekends, especially Sundays, I may only get in 3-4,000 steps.

I also have a HRM that I used a lot when I was running. And I found the same thing to be true with it. Just as your pedometer (and mine) does not add up very many steps, (calories), for activities that don't require lots of steps, the HRM does not give many, if any calories for activities that do no raise your heart rate to an aerobic level.

How are you doing for Christmas? I think I'm really doing well this year (for a change). If I keep going, I should actually have my shopping done early. That would be a first. :)

I'm doing horrible with food and exercise and my weight continues to slowly climb. I've not changed my tracker here b/c I keep forgetting (and I log my weight elsewhere). But I have GOTTA get back on track somehow. If you believe in prayer, please pray for me.

PS. I'm still here, BUT have no computer at home that can currently connect to the internet (well one REALLY old one that will get on at times). Got the main pc in the shop and need to get my laptop in.

Dee,

This pedometer is turning out to be a REAL eye opener! Unlike any I have had before, this one can be programmed - using your age, weight, height, and gender, to calculate total calories that you burn both at rest and while accumulating steps. It says to start with a goal of burning 300 more total calories than you take in. Well, yesterday was my first day and Saturday is my off day so THAT was a real learning experience lol. Sunday I tend to be kind of moderate and then on the weekdays I am a lot more on program.

One thing I did learn today is that activity does not necessarily equal steps. I just got in from my back woods where I spent a couple of hours raking and bagging leaves and breaking up kindling for the fireplace - pretty tiring work but not necessarily a lot of steps. Yesterday was more steps, but I don't belive more work. Anyway, I got 11,558 steps yesterday and am curious to see what my weekly average will be (I walk five days a week)

Janet, you're not alone. We had our Thanksgiving on that Friday, and I proceeded to have a three day binge and have not been doing well since. I'm finally starting to feel a LITTLE more in control and able to try to get back on track.

I am a nurse too and work at a nursing home. We had our annual state survey this week -- lots of stress and not much sleep --making me not really care about what I ate. Yuk.

I love my Omron pedometer. It's the most durable I've found and I wear it daily -- have for over two years now. It sure helps make me aware of how active I am (or not) in a day's time. I'm sure you'll love it. Be sure to let us know how it works. It sounds a lot fancier than the one I have.

Well, Thanksgiving turned out to be not to healthy. I was on call that day and worked 9 and a half hours and drove almost 150 miles (I am a home health nurse). When I got home at about 4:30 my neighbors invited me over for dinner and they did NOT have a healthy spread and at that point I admit, I indulged! Oh well, if during this holiday season Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day were the only two days I messed up, I would be a happy woman! lol

Last night my New Lifestyles NL-2000 pedometer arrived in the mail and I spent some time programming it this morning. My next goal is to get to develop a really close relationship with this piece of equipment and to record both my nutrtion and my steps DAILY!!!

Hi Janet,

Let's see....

--Turkey as usual.
--Sweet potato casserole -- with less added sugar.
--Green bean casserole -- nothing really bad there.
--Corn casserole - made with applesauce instead of butter.
--Mashed potatoes - going to try broth (chicken or vegetable) in stead of butter.
--Cranberry sauce as usual (I don't eat too much of this anyway)
--A couple of baked sweet potatoes, plain (I MAY opt for one of these instead of the other).

Then for dessert...
--Oat bran muffins (from mix) made with pumpkin instead of oil, etc. (the healthiest - and the one I HOPE to choose)
--Banana bread (from mix) -- again, made w/the pumpkin - plus a couple extra bananas mashed in.
--Brownies (from reduced sugar mix) made w/ the pumpkin. (got some reduced sugar frosting - just in case anyone wants to frost theirs)
--Pumpkin pie made from a reduced sugar recipe and put into a reduced fat crust.

How about you... what's on your menu?

I have not been doing well and now as the holidays close in I REFUSE to let this be an excuse to be even worse. I actually feel lucky that I am the poor fool on call for Thanksgiving because that gives me an excuse to avoid the high calories temptations!

This next month is going to be a real challenge of course! I have been exercising well this week and have been journaling.

Does everyone have plans for healthy holiday meals?

Hi everyone

Hope everyone's doing well. I'm still struggling. Think I'm going to TRY to focus on ONE day at a time -- instead of looking to where I should be or could be.

Have a wonderful week.

Hi Everyone,

Just checkin' in. Hope everyone is doing well. I'm still struggling, but definitely NOT giving up.

A binge or two over the weekend (sigh - emotions/hormones getting the best of me). The past couple of days, my calories would have been better if I'd skipped the candies. (blush) --

Well Holloween's over, and I can hopefully move on. I DO feel so much better when I eat right. :)

Well... everyone have a great week!

LOL - on the 'computer illiterate friends' -- all mine are too. I joined to be able to see a 25 year old co-worker page. Then when I saw everything there was... I was really impressed.

I think I'm on day 5 (maybe 4) of staying in my calorie range. I'm also doing well at staying within my targets for protein, carbs, fat, and fiber. BUT -- eating 'clean' only during the day with a little not so good stuff in the evening.

One step at a time. Get back on track with calories -- THEN tackle the 'family meal' LOL

Have a great weekend -- its raining here.

I'm headed into day 3 of clean eating and portion control. I just finished reading 'The Runner's Diet' and I realized I've been eating way too much - even if it is good stuff.

I don't MySpace - most of my friends are computer illiterate...lol

Hey, does anyone here MySpace?

I just joined a few days ago (so I could see a friend's figure building pics)... I did join a group called "Healthy Eating, Recipes and Tips" ... On the group page there are links to different calculators, etc. such as BMI, daily caloire needs, etc.

Anyway... was just looking to see if there were any familiar faces there.

Lately I've only been making it TWO (and sometimes three) days before blowing it. And when I blow it, I blow it BIG time!!!! Always way more than enough to wipe out my good days.

Today marks my FOURTH good day in a row, and my appetite currently seems to be in check. emoticon
But at this point I know... there's no such thing as knowing it's going to last indefinitely. It's gotta be one day at a time Ugh! I'm not giving up. So however many times I fall down, I plan to get right back up again. emoticon

Hope all is well with you.

Hi, How's everyone doing out there?

I REALLY blew it over the weekend. It's been a long time since I've eaten that much! Yuk! Two steps backwards for sure. I've done fairly well at keeping junk food out of the house -- so I ended up bingeing on peanut butter and crackers Saturday night. Yes, peanut butter! (Smuckers all natural) and not a little -- a lot!!! Boy those calories add up fast!

oh yea... IF I should disappear, it may be b/c of computer problems. My main pc at home shut down on it's own earlier in the week and won't power up.

AND now the screen on my laptop is acting up... so I may find myself with only my pc at work.

I need to get my pc in to be checked out, but I hate the whole trying to figure out the most honest, and least expensive place to take it. :o

Hi, All!

Whew! I appreciate all of your support while I've been drowning!

Things have slowed down a bit. I'm still very tired. I've cut back from two classes per week to one at the cancer center by default; the last two weeks I was too tired to drive safely to my Thursday class. Fortunately, it will be offered again in a couple of months, while my Monday class will not. I also found another resource posted on the bulletin board there: a local non-profit offers workout classes to cancer patients specifically geared to helping us deal with fatigue and other side effects of our disease/treatment. Sessions are offered twice a week at a local fitness club. It's still in Phoenix, but not as far as The Wellness Community. It's ongoing; I'm already signed up to start in November, once my other classes end.

I have lots of ideas percolating in my mind for this team. I need to create enough order in my life to get some of them written down.

My sister is giving me enough money to have household help again. Not Merry Maids kind of help; they don't do laundry or dishes, which are my biggest needs, since they're always there. In the past I've hired a high school or college student to come in 2 or 3 hours a week, to do the routine stuff -- laundry, dishes, floors, bathrooms -- which leaves my time and energy free for things that only I can do. When I've been really lucky she's also done some cooking and clean up, so I eat better all week. I'm trying to find someone; I heard back this morning from someone who will use his contacts at the local university to help me.

More later...I wanted to check in. Flo

re: leaving out hot peppers

I enjoy Caribbean / Latin American food, but don't enjoy really hot spices myself. When I leave hot peppers out of a dish I replace them with canned green chiles. I still get some flavor but without the heat.

Thanks. I do have a bottle of 'Hot Shot' (a blend of ground red & black pepper) that I add to a lot of my food at the table.

I'd like to make the food more flavorful (w/o using meats) or hot spices so that I can add my 'heat' at the table, but he still gets a flavorful meal. I don't even like things toooo hot, but do like a little kick to them. :)

Get yourself a bottle of Mrs. Dash - you can find it in the spice section of your grocery store. You can add it to food at the table and that way you can have the spice your looking for and hubby can keep his bland. That's what we do in this house because my partner just doesn't like highly spiced food.

I made a recipe out of the World Vegetarian book. It was 'Blackeyed peas, rice, and pumpkin' from Trinidad (Since I've been there a few times). I thought it was a little bland, BUT I had to leave out the hot peppers since hubby don't like spicy/hot.

I'll keep tryin' :)

I could sure use some cost effective tips too. Trying to find a balance between cost and nutrition can be quite a challenge for me -- even just the cost part with out the nutrition part can be a challenge for ME! LOL

Lately I've been trying to plan my evening meals a week at a time, and trying to use a lot of what I have on hand (I tend to buy and buy without ever using much of it). And I'm trying to use left-overs however I can also.

This is probably not the best of examples, but one day last week hubby just had to have some burgers on the grill, so we did. This week, I'll reheat the burgers and fix some eggs (for 'steak' & eggs). And one day last week we added some left over vegetables to a stir fry. Guess what I'm saying is we're trying to cut out on the waste.

Another way we do this is by trying to not fix too much. I try to fix just what I think we're going to use. If I didn't quite fix enough to satisfy hubby (or if he wasn't too crazy about it), he'll just fix himself a bowl of cereal.

What tips do you all have?

And Sarah, don't feel bad - my online time has been a bit limited too. It's sometimes hard to maintain a good balance.

dee--a pumpkin festival sounds like fun! in biglersville, pennsylvania, there is a huge apple harvest festival. there are a lot of crafts and food. it's neat, but it's so busy!
this past weekend the whole family was sick with a stomach bug. i kept my daughter home from school today just to make sure she was okay. of course, she's fine.
i'm sorry i haven't been on here much lately! i just don't seem to have much time to get on the computer with a toddler around. i have a new puppy too... yikes! i need to get back on track with more whole foods cooking. how does everyone plan their meals to be the most cost-effective?

Hi everyone!

Hope your enjoying the weekend. We went to the 'Pumpkin Festival' (an annual event) last night - and I was sooo hoping from some pumpkin chili -- or maybe something new that I hadn't tried before.... but the lines were long and there were signs up "Out of.... (this, this, and this)." They were out of so many things, the family decided we'd just go somewhere else. *sigh*

Anyway...I'm not doing as well as I'd like with avoiding meats, but am doing better at using whole foods and cooking at home. How's everyone else doing with their eating plans?

Muzomamma - A year ago my knees and hips hurt so bad I was sure I was headed for replacement surgery. Running has cured all of that. You can't go from 0 to 60 in one day, but a gradual progression gives amazing results.

lybbe--that is so awesome that you did a half marathon! i'd love to be able to do something like that, but i'm not sure i will. i think i got my mom's knees (not her sense of humor). she needs a double knee replacement at the age of 50. i can already feel some aches in my knees when i walk or climb stairs.

flo--i hope you're feeling better soon! i also hope the plagues back off for a while so you can breathe and catch up. i said a prayer for you.

Wow Flo! You've really had more than your share.

And for the sense of humor, my family has a similar one. My daughter (23y/o) attributes her sense of humor to me, and likes that poem that says,

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
I am my mother, after all.

I'm still struggling with a series of plagues. I was thinking Pharoah, but a close friend suggested Job.

The accident two weeks ago, the flood last week, PC problems, frozen shoulder, and infestation of ants...my life is never dull.

The bright spot? Today my sister and I will go to the second session of my nutrition for cancer class.

While we were looking for her luggage, which was first delayed, then missing, I told her, "There are lots of worse things that could happen. I could have cancer." She was not amused.

Our family has a quirky sense of humor that seems to be part of our Irish genetic heritage.

Awesome Lybbe ! ! ! emoticon

I was supposed to do one this past spring, but --- long story short, I ended up hurting my knee and it didn't happen. The farthest I've gone is 9 miles - so hats off to you! and keep up the good work.

How's everyone else doing?

Alrighty then - I'll use the back porch to brag a bit...LOL At age 61 I ran my first half marathon on Sunday - and got a tattoo on my leg to commemorate it yesterday. My new motto is 'have no regrets.' I'm telling you for certain, I would never have been able to do this if I hadn't got rid of all the processed food in my life.
