I checked on some of the plastic electric kettles because they looked like polycarbonate. Not knowing what one you have. The ones that I checked on had no polycarbonate. Guaranteed not to leach Bisphenol A and the only phthalates were in the cord. Does that help?

I did a quick google search and krups has one. There are a few. They are running about $70+ each.

www.reusablebags.com/ is a great site. I'm waiting for them to get stock of their 38 oz wide-mouth bottle..

I just realized it's "stupid" to get a metal bottle, while at the same time using a plastic electric kettle to boil water in at home (for tea, coffee, etc..)
How bad is it boiling water in plastic? I would like to get a metal kettle that's electric (b/c it saves on electricity and should be faster)..any recommendations?

I guess that this means that the steamfresh bags of frozen veggies aren't all that great either?
After reading that article, I ordered Sigg bottles for me and my six year old, and I got a Thermos straw sippy cup for my 23 month old. I figured the Sigg was an investment for my dd, because she's starting sports this spring. Now I just have to worry about someone stealing it!

It's so hard to know for sure, but I always tend towards wary. So, I have an aluminum water bottle, but my favourite is to just keep reusing (and washing) glass bottles to carry around with me, or to carry around one of my nifty vintage thermoses. It's a bit more of a bother, but I don't mind so much, all things considered.

I kinda think that the jury is still out on this one. I use glass containers for food/leftovers. But I have polycarbonate water bottles - which I never ever heat up. And I wash them after every use. I hope to hear more soon. Thanks Will.

OK, I re-read the link to the website again. I had said before I use the hard plastic, its the poly carbon one. It happens to be a #7. On the website it says that the #7 when heated is (bad), now when they say heated do they mean washed with hot water or more like putting hot liquids in it, or heating it in the micro. Now I'm scared! Please let me know what you think! Looks like I'll be getting the stainless steal or sigg bottles! Big investment for 7 people! We also use the 3 gallon poly carb for our water in our fridge, do you know a better way?

Wow, thanks for the info! I need to get another water bottle prob won't be the sigg....(to much money for me). But I do have one of the hard plastic bottles. I got it at Whole Foods. I started getting my filtered water there....taste great! I realized how much waste my children and I were making with all of are water bottles. So we switched to the filtered 3 gallon bottles. But now hearing this, I'm glad I did it for our health! Thanks again for the info!

Excellent point Will -- it is amazing the thing they choose to ban, and the things they don't.

I agree. I watched my mother die from tobacco related illness so I have seen what it does first hand.

Yes, I agree. I have often wondered why the FDA doesn't ban the sale of tobacco products. There are undisputed facts as to the ill effects they can have on one's health. Even people who use tobacco products often admit they know of the risks.

It bothers me that people who get lung cancer have sued tobacco companies when they knew up front that getting cancer is a consequence. I would rather make people uncomfortable up front and just outlaw tobacco rather than let people kill themselves.

The FDA does have the power to make change and out law it. But they won't. Cigaretts and chewing tobacco brings in too much money.

Thanks! I've had a sigg water bottle on my wish list for quite awhile. It doesn't surprise my that the FDA has approved plastics. I don't trust the FDA. They are so easily swayed by whomever pads their pockets not the consumers whose interests they are supposed to be looking out for.
