Hey guys. Sorry about this, but I just realized that we're almost halfway through March. I'm moving this to a new thread. Thanks!

Oh, Who-dat, that is too funny!

Years ago, when I was a teenager, my mother worked with a woman who was from South America, Argentina if I remember right. She had a recipe for chicken that called for beer, and she used root beer, not realizing that it's something different. She asked my mom why our beer was so sweet!

Thanks for the website link. I don't cook with white rice at all, not sure if that will change the recipe but I'll have to try it. I am very interested in trying two other recipes on that site too...the Green Chile Grits and the Millet Stew. They sound good!

Haha Parrot my hubby would have done the same thing. Once he tried to make cupcakes when I was not there. They turned out really awful and so we went over each part of the recipe to see where he goofed...well when it said "1 tsp soda" he put in a tsp of SPRITE, LOL. I love to tease him about that. :o) They mean well don't they?

I recently bought a vegetarian crockpot cookbook. It has a recipe for a brown rice and spinach casserole. It doesn't have you saute the brown rice, you just mix it in. But it does tell you to take 2 tea towels, fold them in half and place them under the crockpot lid. The instructions say this will absorb excess water and allow the rice to cook to a good texture.

Well, I decided to make this last week. Normally, I make the food the night before and pop it in the crockpot in the morning. My husband was home sick last week and volunteered to make the recipe for me. When I got home from work that day, I found that he had neatly folded the tea towels and placed them on top of the lid. He had also turned the crockpot on, but forgot to plug it in. So I can't tell you if this method works or not. I'll let you know next time I make this recipe.

I'm adding plenty of water. I was wondering if the problem might be the part of the recipes that want me to add the brown rice to the skillet, cook it for a couple minutes or so, THEN add the water. Could that somehow make the rice not cook the way it normally would? I don't have that problem when I just boil it.

I think that brown rice tends to be firmer than white rice. I have cooked it in the crock pot several times and it comes out somewhat firm. I wonder if you are adding enough water. I think I usually use6 cups water to 3 cups rice. Gail

It would be nice to cook brown rice in the crock pot. I've cooked it a couple times where the recipe wanted me to 'saute' it (or whatever -- cook it in a skillet before adding the water) -- and each recipe I've tried like this, the rice has come out hard -- never seeming to cook all the way.

Joyfullyhis...I just got a crockpot this weekend and that is a really good question. I have a recipe book that has a wild rice concoction...I could take a look at the time and settings for you if you like.

Anyone have recipes for the crockpot that uses uncooked brown rice? I find recipes that have it for white rice, but not any for brown which takes longer to cook...

Deann-Congrats on the new grandbaby!

Joyfullyhis--Welcome!

My toe is doing quite fine, well enough that I can walk the dog again. The dog is very happy, as am I.

Debbie, I love the title of that book. Hope your toe's feeling better.

Flo, hope your tests went well.

I was gone over the weekend (100 miles south) b/c my second grandson arrived. The little guy only weighed 4lb 9oz !!! He is sooo tiny, but so far it looks like he's healthy.

Good luck with your lab tests, AZlady!

My toe is so much better today. I put Arnica cream on it--that stuff is amazing!

It's cloudy here, kind of cool. We had lots of rain on Thursday (well, lots for this time of year in West Texas--about an inch), which our garden loved.

Hi, Debbie,

I just read your longer version on another thread. Ouch! I'm glad you were able to stay home and take care of yourself.

My day has gotten of to a less than wonderful start. Although it could certainly get worse, I'm assuming it will get better.

And -- look! -- the sun just started peeking through the clouds!

[two more hours. two more hours. muttering to self about how much longer I need to fast before my lab work. two more hours.....]

How's everyone doing? I stubbed my toe really bad, so I'm just hanging around the house today. I finished reading Michael Pollan's new book, "In Defense of Food," which is fascinating. Now I'm reading, "If It's Not Food, Don't Eat It," which is also quite good.
