So all beans are whole foods but fruit are not because you can make them into other things? I always considered an apple a whole food because it had nothing added to it. You live you learn.

Yes.

It's not a dumb question.

Some foods can be broken down and separated. An apple can be peeled, or pureed, or juiced. A kernel of wheat can be milled, and de-germed, and sifted, and bleached.

There's not much that you can do to a pinto bean to separate out the components.
