I am expanding my whole grains. I tried Quinoa and like it. I want to try amaranth flour in baking breads and see if it is really good like I think it will be.

I am actually doing pretty well with not drinking soda and coffee. I've been drinking more tea as a result, but it's usually caffeine-free tea. I'm doing pretty well with the sweets too, except for Easter. My son's birthday was the same day, so I had birthday cake too. Ugh! I need to think about some other small changes I want to make. Hmm...what's next? Still going to work on the sweets, but I need to come up with two more.

I'm trying hard to eat less towards the evening and before 7pm..

Did good tonight, I was surrounded by friends and family eating pizza, I was strong and didn't eat!!
I had already eaten earlier, before 5pm, I'm trying to be consistent.

I need to eat more vegetables.

I have hit a plateau with my weight, I haven't been able to get out of the 140's..

I've tried a few (a couple) new recipes.

I do well at getting my water in during the week, but the weekends area struggle.

I've been doing better at fruits and veggies. It seems it's a lot easier to get the fruits in than the veggies. I feel stuck in a rut -- eating the same ones.

Late joiner here!

What three things can you commit to changing in your food choices in 2008?

1. try a new food at least 2x a month
2. make the coops and farmers market regular stops in my shopping trips
3. work towards a more complete E2L lifestyle change

Blessings Always

It is a good thing I got in my good food in the day-time...after water aerobics we went to a pub to meet friends. Nachos. Yeah. So that wasn't on my challenge list. And, 2 beer. We had so much fun; we needed to hang out with friends. What I didn't need was the nachos and beer :(

Will make today a better food day :)

I'm doing pretty well on my goals. I did have soda last Thursday when I took the kids to Chuck E Cheese. I tasted the water they have there, and it was not so good! I stuck with the diet soda though. Still working on the sugary foods. I'm happy with that too. I just keep remembering that when I have one, then I will want two, etc, etc....

3 Things that I will do my best to change:

1. Not eat after 7p.m.
2. No seconds--even if it's healthy!
3. Search for better recipes or make my own.

Okay. So I'm a little late with this. I've made a few changes recently, but they're not permanent yet. The three things I'm changing are:
1) No soda
2) No coffee (meaning no creamer; added calories!)
3) Limiting sweets to dark chocolate 4 times a week

I haven't had any soda for the past two weeks, I think. And I haven't had any coffee for about a week and a half. I've moved to tea, so it's not so much caffeine. Working on the sweets.

I'm doing well with the water, but still struggling with the other two. I am looking at a couple of recipes that I have a good chance of actually trying this week. And I did buy a fruit that I'm unfamiliar with -- don't remembe the name, but the sign said it is the largest grown citrus fruit.

1. Aim for trying one new recipe a week (trying 3 amonth would be great)
2. Get my water in - EVEN on the weekends when I'm not at work.
3. Have at least 5 DIFFERENT fruits and vegetables each week (instead of the same-o same-o)

The challenge is what 3 things I can change (or have to in my case)
1. Restrict my sodium to 1200mg daily
2. Learn to read labels and ingredients
3. Choose raw instead of frozen or canned

I have to eat tuna (high in omega 3) and I do love it. The rest of the meat I can give up. The sugars are not missed. The biggest challenge for me right now is eating what I am suppose to eat a day. I feel sick most of the time and do not want to eat. I can only lose 1-2 pounds a month, so have to slow the weight loss down.

I'm new to this team.

My husband read "The China Study" last fall and changed his diet to be essentially vegan. He maintained that for a while, then added more in. After attending some food seminars, reading McDougall and Furhman, and watching 'McDougall's Medicine,' I decided to give it a shot, and now we're both on a the whole foods plant based diet together, so I have been vegan for about 2 weeks now, except that I do use a little honey in our homemade bread.

I commit to:
1. Figure out the best balance for nutrition in my new eating
2. Find at least 3 new dinner recipes for the month
3. Decide if/when I will incorporate any animal products into my diet

Looking forward to seeing how others are doing.

A while back I signed onto Whole Foods. I had trouble going Vegan. I am here to give it my very best shot. I need help on my journey going Vegan. I really want to get healthy and I believe this is the very best way to do it. I know what I need to do. I just got to do it. I will commit to:

1- Eating three uncooked fruits and vegetables a
day.
2- Cut out refind foods like breads, tortilla shells
and instead eat beans and such on a bed of
lettuce.
3- Cut fats out almost entirely except for 1/4 cup
flaxseed before dinnner.

Not doing as great either... I am massively hung over... had TOO MUCH to drink last night in celebration of my sister's 24th birthday... I have eaten one meal so far healthy choice... cereal banana rice milk although I admit I am craving something fried but by the looks of how i feel now I cannot move from this bed! :-( NEVER AGAIN!

Still really inconsistent on the water, and I've made some poor food choices.

But...I'm sitting here drinking warm water with lemon. An ND that I respect recommends drinking a full glass of warm water with fresh lemon juice first thing every day. Something about detoxing the liver.

Update: Ugh! Didn't realize that I was sick! I lay down "for an hour" after posting this and just woke up (2p). The nausea is back.

1. Got the ingredients to try something new (something easy to start with)
2. Gotta work a little harder to get my water in -- not even getting it in at work. Too many distractions and not at my desk enough.
3. Went to the store last night and got lots of fresh fruits and vegi's last night. Now I just gotta use them without letting them go bad.

Have added fruits and veggies like I wanted to my meals resulting in feeling much more full and the urge to overeat is not as strong as before.

I have also been eating multiple meals throughout the day which can contribute to me not overeating

So far so good and feeling good...

Even though I'm unemployed and running low on funds I have stuck to my resolve to try buying 50% organic and avoid processed foods. Last night I bought local organic salsa, organic beans, and cooked up some shrimp burritos (with no cheese)

I saw The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen mentioned by another member her, checked it out of the library and loved it.

I love good Greek and Italian food, anyway, but am allergic to dairy and eggs. This book has been wonderful for me.

I mentioned it in my (other) blog and my sister bought it for me for Christmas. Now I can make notes as I go.

Lots of ethnic variety -- French (Provencal), Italian, Spanish, Moroccan, Greek. Similar ingredients, of course, but a few surprises.

It's a very comprehensive cookbook, too. Soup to nuts, so to speak, with menu suggestions, serving suggestions, good directions. I'm very happy with it.

AZ - no, i've never tried it raw. i'll give it a go. i actually don't like licorice flavor very much, so i'm not even sure if i'd like fennel, period : ) we shall see!

i found what looks like a great recipe on epicurious:
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/v
iews/231101

don't have the mediterranean vegan kitchen, but i'll give it a go if i run across it. how do you like it? i'm in the market for good veg cookbooks. i always rely off the internet, but there's something about the heft of a physical book that i like. feels more official : ) i have Moosewood Cooks at home and i'm sorely disappointed with the recipes and will be giving it away. everything i tried was very dull and tasted like what anti-veg people think of when they imagine veg food (beige-colored and bland). also have one of Madhur Jaffrey's books but i have yet to crack it open...

about the fennel...have you tried it raw? I bought some a few weeks ago for a specific soup recipe. The soup was nothing special, but I really enjoyed what I ate raw that never made it into the pan. I've seen a lot of recipes that call for raw fennel.

Does your library carry The Mediterrean Vegan Kitchen? It has a lot of recipes for fennel.

i'll jump in and give my three small change food resolutions:

1. buy a healthy food item every week that's not part of my standard grocery list. it doesn't have to be something i've never had, just something i don't buy often because i forget about it or don't know what to do with it.

2. try out 1 new recipe every week.

3. always keep a jar of homemade salad dressing in the fridge.

i accomplished #1 today, times four: bought beets, fennel, kiwi, and mango. the fennel will be an interesting one because i've only cooked it once and it came out pretty nasty. so maybe that will end up fulfilling #2, since i'll need to find a good recipe for it instead of just winging it like i did before.

I think we may be focusing on holiday preparations. Not necessarily shopping, but cleaning, wrapping, parties, etc. School concerts, office parties, coordinating with the x- or the in-laws.

I'll send out a reminder as we get closer to the 31st.

Is everyone out Christmas shopping or what???

So quiet!

I have a small change I can commit to.

I'm dumping my ticker and the scale. They both make me unhappy at a time when I have so many things to be happy about.

The numbers play with my mind. I know I look better. Heck, I feel even better than I look.

So, I decided it was time to get rid of the toxic behavior (weighing in and obsessing over the digits)...

It's holding me back from true freedom.

I can measure my success from the notches in my belt or the way the pants start bunching up in the butt, or the way the blouse fits...

and how my tummy is flattening out.

These small yet consistent changes are making me happy.

Once I focus on the number game, I become terribly sad and stressed and angry and it's like I loose so much happiness.

The scale has to go. Period. "nuff said.

Planning ahead is a significant "baby" step towards success.

:)

I'll be joining this challenge as soon as I think of another 3 I can manage. I have so many to choose from...

Flo here: SkinnyPup posted the following in a thread in the Introduce Yourself forum; I felt it was a great idea, and deserved broader exposure. She was offering suggestions to a member, and shared a challenge:
-----------
from SkinnyPup's post:

Small steps- don't overwhelm and set yourself up for failure. I'm not a believer of deprivation.

However- we are so blessed and lucky to have so many healthier options even in some of the processed food choices.

If you must, choose/replace them with the lower fat brands.. the lower sodium (if it's possible)

...

Okay... so I have to ask where you shop?

If you have a Trader Joes or an inexpensive co-op around, start focusing in on that store and try to use the markets only for things Trader Joes doesn't have.

You WILL get more for your money and there are far less ingredients in many of their frozen foods...

It's changes like that ... that's what I'm talking about. :) Nothing major. You won't starve! Heck, my son and I love TJ's low fat cheetos!!! :) But it's all about moderation and getting away from emotional eating :)

But don't overwhelm and get hard on yourself. Start with a plan for 2008, if you haven't already.

Think about this- and we should start a thread here...

What three things can you commit to changing in your food choices in 2008?

1.
2.
3.

I have two teams with this thread and each person is carefully thinking this through before commiting.

(you can always change it later :)
