If caraway seeds are the seeds in rye bread they are totally a swallow. I always assumed those were rye seeds.

I don't like anchovies or anchovy paste but I like a good Caesar dressing which should have anchovies! emoticon

I've never had kim-chee & don't know that I ever will. Kombucha isn't bad provided you KNOW what it is & don't think you've grabbed a bottle of water. LOLOLOLOL!!!

Apple-flavoured granola bars - swallow (Quaker sells them in Canada, not sure about the US.)

Cottage cheese - swallow, but if it's fresh, it's a mood thing. (I've had cottage cheese on pizza, after I drained it for a day. Not bad at all.)

Kombucha - never had it, and didn't know what it was till I googled it. (It's ok, it's a safe google, even for the kids. :-P)

Kim-chee - haven't had that either

Anise...licorice...fennel - I've tried all 3, and to me, they taste very similar. I don't like black licorice or the real thing, so it doesn't go in my food.

Caraway seeds - I can't stand them in cabbage rolls, but they're not so bad in rye bread, though I will pick 'em off if I see 'em.

Anchovies or anchovy paste

OK...so I don't even know what made me think of this...

Anise...licorice...fennel?

So I'm a butt head here. I've never even TRIED fennel. But I like licorice.

And nope...never tried anise either. emoticon

JO...you crack me up!!! ALWAYS!!!

I suppose an apple flavored granola bar would be a swallow...don't think I've ever had one.

Cottage cheese is a swallow. I'm really enjoying the "Cottage doubles" which is cottage cheese with a fruit topping. The strawberry (& I LOVE strawberries) was GROSS. So I had to eat the CC part & throw the strawberry stuff away. My favorite seems to be the pineapple. There's a TON of protein in cottage cheese & I need more protein in my diet so it helps.

Kombucha or any of the other fun fermented stuff that is HIP right now? Kim-chee?

What do I put with tuna? Nothing, since the cats eat tuna and I don't (SPIT)

Tumeric - swallow but not generously. I didn't know about the anti-inflammatory properties!

Liver - gag -- only once have I ever enjoyed it, and I can't reproduce that recipe, try as I might.

Pinto beans - swallow

Liver is a spit.

I haven't figured out how to get over the yellow...but I totally SHOULD be eating turmeric on everything to reduce my body's inflammation.

Pinto Beans are a swallow, but I do not have the bean love in general.

Liver is a swallow, but only if I cook it.

Tumeric is a swallow

Okra is a no go. I live in the south and all but I have never found a way I like okra so definitely a spit.

Corn is alright, but I try to get it from the farmer's market where they sell non-GMO corn. We don't eat a lot anyway.

Celery is a love especially with pimento cheese or peanut butter but it is great plain too. I just strip the back and get the stings off before I eat it. Swallow.

I'm okay with whole wheat things for the most part. I prefer wheat over white. Though I have a friend that tries to get me to not eat wheat.

So what about pinto beans?

Celery -- Not a willing swallow, but I will eat it. Braces as a teenager and celery "string" still haunts me today. :-P

Okra - I'm not from Maine (just east of it, though), and I haven't the foggiest idea if it's a spit or swallow.

Corn - Swallow but not like I used to. I've been working towards eliminating foods containing corn (syrup, flour, oil), so things like tortillas and pitas are only brought home if I can find them in whole wheat instead.

Celery is a swallow for sure.

Okra...what does a girl from Maine know about okra??? emoticon

Okra can be slimy & gross but it can also be very tasty. And they've made a snack thing of okra too. How do I explain? You know you see "vegie straws" and "crisp fried greenbeans" in the grocery store? They have the same sort of thing with okra. I don't know if they dehydrate them or flash fry them or what...but they are more like a crisp than anything else & those are pretty tasty.

Radish is a SPIT!

For those of us who have been brainwashed...CORN?

Sweet Potatoes -- Swallow!! They're a little high on the glycemic index, but I prefer their flavour to regular potatoes (which I find have no flavour at all).

Onions - prefer raw but not the accompanying heartburn, carmelized are my favourite.

I've seen beets boiled in water and served as a side for a meal. The only way to get the dirt taste off them is to really scrub them, but then you lose the nutritional value of the skin. It stains EVERYTHING, even a stainless steel pot. One fellow I know has boiled beets then mashes them to nearly liquid, then mixes that into his potatoes. He's a Newfoundlander, if that explains anything at all. :-D

Radish

This is a good one Jo. When someone says beets to me...I assume they mean pickled beets like you see on salad bars & whatever. Those to me are a swallow. However...if you mean a beet that has been picked from the ground & cooked in some kind of way...I'm actually not sure. I've had too too many people tell me they taste like dirt. I'm not a fan of dirt...

Onions...COOKED only. But if you were to forget & put a raw onion ON my burger...I actually like the flavor, but I will pick the onion off. Otherwise...PLEASE chop mine up nice & finely. (Do you hear me Chinese restaurants???)

How about one of my favorites...sweet potatoes!!!

Beets - spit. I just can't do the flavour, it's just not yummy to me. Many in my family think I'm crazy. :-P

Onions -- raw or cooked, minced to hide them or big chunks to really taste them.

Frogs legs -- I tried them a long time ago, and was freaked out by what it was, but I can't recall if I liked it. Swallow to taste.

Instead of offering the sweet treats made with sugar, sugar, bad fats, and more sugar, I'm going to try focusing on healthier foods.

Jicama - meh... in a cold salad, but that's about it.
Crawfish - never had 'em, but if they're anything like shrimp, it would be a swallow.
Gum - I can't chew gum as a rule, because it aggravates the TMJ, and I love to pop bubbles. Mine hasn't been diagnosed, but it runs in the family. I only chew gum if I've got bad breath and I'm meeting someone. Bad breath for me usually means I haven't had enough water today.
Summer foods - berries, like the ones I expect to harvest in the back yard, including wild raspberries. And anything we grow in the garden, which means I'll learn to like cukes right out of the garden.
Pickles - swallow, generally. My faves are Lady Ashburn and Bread & Butter.

Boston cream cake/donuts?

I like 'em, especially donuts, but I tend not to buy them often, they're so messy. And Tim Horton's makes some of the best BCD's around.

PICKLES!!! I'm sure this will "spark" all sorts of fun debate. I know there are pickle lovers (normal folks) and pickle haters(WHAT???) But what is your favorite KIND of pickle?

I love a good homemade pickle...but some people over-estimate their own talents. LOL!

And I LOVE bread & butter pickles. My hands down favorite!

Favorite summer food are pretty much all fresh picked veggies--they taste so much better. Mo's and Ginger's favs are top of the list especially just off the vine tomatoes still warm from the sun. I have 3 tomato plants from Home Depot that I haven't had time to plant in the garden yet. good intentions, but I haven't even finished cleaning out the garden yet this year.

Mo, I'm sorry to hear about the reactions that you get with sugar substitutes. Bad headaches are not worth it.

I've never had jicama...have never had an interest...so no opinion.

I've also never had crawfish...but can't imagine I would NOT like them.

When did we talk about artificial sweeteners? I don't remember that & didn't go searching for it either. I can't do them. Not even in gum or mints. They give me a really crappy headache. So if for any reason I would ever have to give up sugar...there would be no "substitute treats". Or there would be a lot of Tylenol. Why can't you chew regular gum Jo? No judgment...just true curiosity...

Hmmmm...um...favorite SUMMER food...

Mine is a tie between strawberries & real, fresh, ripe tomatoes!!!

Shrimp (I'm not a big seafood fan so I'm picky) is swallow depending on how prepared.
Mo - I know I'm not, but I make myself eat some cold water from time to time since it's so healthy

When I lived in Louisiana crawfish were real popular - anyone here try them?

Sweetener/fake sugar candies -- I gave up fake sugar & substitutes because it wasn't doing me any favours. However, Russell Stover chocolates and I think it's WW candies are edible, and any gum I buy now usually has aspartame or sucralose with the sugar -- can't do stuff like Hubba Bubba anymore.

Types of grains eaten -- I can't think of any I don't eat. Flour isn't just made from wheat, and I like experimenting with new grains. Y'know, carbs & all :-P Corn, if considered a source of flour, is something I'm trying to cut out from my diet, since I can get all the nutrients that corn provides in other foods.

Cauliflower Rice -- I haven't seen it in the stores up here yet, but I would try it once to see what it tastes like.

Tamales -- I think I've had it once, and I think I liked it.

Nachos -- Gobble. I like that word better than shovel in.

East Indian food -- Naan bread is about it. I lived on the west coast of Canada for a few years, and I learned I really disliked the way their food is prepared & seasoned. I feel heartburn just thinking about it.

Steak - Let me just stab that hunk of beef with my fork and get that out of your way. :-D It's not all the time, I'm not the meatatarian in the family, but beef steak is right up there on the YUM scale.

Clams, Lobster & Shrimp -- all must be cooked before I will look at them at all. Lobster used to be "poor kid's lunch" when my parents were growing up, it was that abundant. I much prefer my lobster steamed/boiled with a bowl of hot garlic butter on the side -- and I don't waste the flavour of lobster on butter. Shrimp is ok, but I have a limit to how much I can eat in a sitting. Lobster, there is no limit since it takes nearly an hour to eat 3. Clams I will eat in a chowder or deep fried, but only if they don't turn out rubbery. Blech on rubbery shellfish!

While in Mexico, I made it a point to try new foods. This is one of them:

Jicama

Lobster is totally a swallow for me. YUMYUMYUM!!!

Clams in clam chowder or (GASP!) fried are yummy...beyond that I don't LOVE them.

I know we don't have fish lovers here.

How about SHRIMP???

I moved to the Southwest so when I read 'Indian food' I immediately thought of Indian fry bread, Indian tacos, etc..drool swallow. All of the Native American Indian foods I've eaten so far has been swallow followed by wanting more. I do a mean Oliver Twist imitation with an empty bowl. Ditto on the Mexican and TexMex food. DH has learned how to make tamales (the food in the corn husk) and they are addictive.

But, Mo, I think that you meant Indian as in food of India?
I do love curried chicken if they're not too hot. So they are a swallow. Everything else is spit.

Oh there is NO Mexican food that is a spit. OMG!!! I haven't had a GOOD tamale in literally years tho. The kind inside the corn husk. Oh yummmmmmmmmmmm just thinking about it. Nachos are totally a swallow even without meat.

OK...here is a total spit for me...INDIAN FOOD...

I don't think I could convince myself that cauliflower was rice, but it sounds interesting

So how about tamales?

For me most 'mexican' food is a spit, but tamales and nachos are a definite swallow. (though it depends on the type of meat used)

Oh wow...I could have sworn they had black beans in them. Was I hallucinating. LMAO!!! Too funny. You know about my bean aversion, right? LOL!

OK...what kinds of grains DO you ladies eat? Is anyone substituting what is being called "cauliflower rice"? You can buy it at Target & that's what it is called. What it IS...is cauliflower that has been chopped or food processored or otherwise manipulated to resemble rice. So if you make a stir fry...you put it over cauliflower rice...or you can make Fried Cauliflower Rice...you get the idea...

Mo the squash boats didn't have any black beans. The squash flavor blends nicely with the enchilada sauce. FYI they don't taste like enchiladas, no corn tortilla flavor, but they're very tasty. Next time I will add microwaved frozen corn to the sauce or like you mentioned, some black beans. It needed more stick to my ribs protein so I added more cheese. Also, that picture of the cheese isn't accurate. Each one only gets 1/4 cup, photos look like at least 1/2 cup or more. I used cheddar.

Clamato juice spit!

Squash - see above

Raw onions - see above

Mac-n-cheese - heck yeah

Mac & Cheese: It's Gobble instead of Swallow. Even gluten-free is yummy. Never had it fried. I can't image any food not tasting good if it was fried.

AMAOLIVIA I have developed a sensitivity to onions so I feel your pain - we eat onions in so much of our food that its hard to avoid when eating out.

Mo thanks for that Mexican spaghetti squash recipe. I got burned out on the usual Italian pasta sauce flavored squash and DH bought one a few weeks ago that I've been ignoring. I'm going to try this recipe this weekend and will let you know how it turns out. It looks really good.

Raw squash is a spit, I don't care for the astringent-like feeling it has. Plus I like how it sweetens up when the sugars caramelize and cook.

Do you like sugar-free candies? They help me manage sugar cravings at night. Any name brands you can recommend?

Mac & cheese??? Are you kidding...of course it's a SWALLOW!!! But not the orange out of the box kind...only homemade or homemade-ish. Especially good is a local restaurant's gorgonzola mac & cheese but I am a HUGE fan of the stinky cheese.

NOT so much a fan of fried mac & cheese.

I am a lot further south than you as we get no snow unless something hunky is up!

As for peas and limas I was made to eat so many as a child I like them now. Weird but true! emoticon

OK....can I admit that the idea of raw squash is kind of skeeving me out? You're further South than me aren't you Olivia? Maybe it's a South thing. I am definitely on the cooked side of the squash fence. LOL!

I haven't had spaghetti squash in years & years. I remember liking it...but maybe not as much as I recall. I had a friend make spaghetti with it recently & he absolutely HATED it. I also had a g/f post a "Skinny Girl" spaghetti squash recipe on FB recently that looked interesting. You can check it out here...if SPARK will let me... www.skinnytaste.com/spaghetti-squash

Squash I normally eat raw, but I can do it lightly sauteed with onions.

Peas are a favorite. Asparagus is a no go! I only enjoyed it once when I had it at a restaurant that grilled it. Mostly I don't eat squishy veggies.

I'm sayin' or at least thinking swallow to almost everything that's been posted since I've been gone. And seriously fried potatoes and fried cheese ... is there any question about Poutine? I want to try it. Now, really. Never had it but imagine that it be great!

Squash - pretty much all of them are swallow but only when prepared in ways that I like. For example boiled squash is a spit no matter what variety.

MO: ROTFL on your peas comment "level of sauce that must be encorporated..." DH loves asparagus I can take it or leave it because of the pee thing (me too).

JLDACQ: I've always agreed with you on the cheap chocolate and as I've gotten older I only like dark and semisweet chocolates now. picky but happy about it since it's not hard to pass on Easter chocolate candies except for those little Whopper's Robin's Eggs (curses to those little eggs). Peas, frozen only. Canned tastes weird and nutrition is low and fresh is too much work for me but I prefer that flavor is someone else takes them out of the pods.

Eileen: I'm so glad that you've taught yourself to like veggies! To get DH to eat more greens I've started juicing using baby spinach and other mild tasting greens along with sweeter tasting fruits and veggies. When I don't feel like juicing with the juicer I just put store bought apple juice in the blender with baby spinach. This morning I added some bananas and strawberries to that mix. You mentioned mushrooms, hot peppers, liver, spice foods, all swallows for me. I'm the only one in the family who likes liver so I don't eat it very often.

Peas is a spit for me. Now if they are IN something I can choke them down...like chicken pot pie. that being said...the level of sauce that must be incorporated for me to et peas is GREAT so those are foods I am generally avoiding at this time. Same with lima beans.

Yes, the poutine seems to be Canadian/Northern US extremities. Kind of like okra is a southern US thing. LOL!

Squash...do you eat it? Do you love it? Are there kinds you do NOT like?

Asparagus - Spit. That's all.

Mo, I forget that poutine is a very Canadian thing, and fiddleheads tend to be a more northern delicacy. Wikipedia links to both:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiddlehead_fer
n

FYI, I spit both. Fiddleheads are an acquired taste. Apparently they're great with vinegar.

Peas: frozen, fresh, canned?

Swallow, swallow cooked, pick 'em off my plate because they just don't look very appealing.

ASPARAGUS...and yes, I am in the 22-50 percent of folks who eat asparagus & it makes their pee smell funny. LOL! emoticon

What the world are fiddleheads??? Never heard of poutine either so thanks for the explanation. We don't have cheese curds here...so I don't know if I would eat that or not.

Foods I won't eat:
Cheap chocolate, most fish, liver & other organ meats, wild game, raw kale, fiddleheads, dill pickles, poutine (fries with gravy & cheese curds), beer, whiskey, scotch & rye, amber or dark spirits, most wines, and coffee/coffee-flavoured anything.

I gotta say, I'm pretty proud of that first one. :-D

Tomato juice is an ick for me. Clams are a not so much.

OK...so let's take a minute to list the foods we absolutely will not eat. LOL! Here's mine...mushrooms, cilantro, peas, lima beans, liver (& other organs), and beer.

Clamato Juice en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clamato Essentially, it's tomato juice with water/juice from cooking clams. It's a popular mix with beer.

Personally - BLECH!! Spit! Spit! Spit! I like clams and tomatoes, just not as a juice!

Hummus -- just hand me the container so I can lick it clean. :-P Mo, if you can't learn to like hummus, don't sweat it. Chick peas are the main ingredient, along with sesame oil as #2. There are a ton of other options out there. I first tried hummus at a party I attended, and I had it with some whole grain crackers. Baba Ganoush was also on the table, and I noticed I preferred hummus to BG. I like both, but I wouldn't have tried it if I had to buy a whole container without knowing I would like it.

I'm funny about fruit cups bc I'm allergic to a couple of fruits. I'll eat peaches or pineapple fruit cups tho. I'm not a fan of mixing my fruits.

Sadly, I don't like hummus. I want to b/c it's tasty & good for you & a fun snack...but nope!

Lentils: for the most part I like, but only as a side dish.

Quinoa: cooked on stove version is a swallow, prefer it over whole grain rice. Flour added to homemade whole wheat bread gives it a really nice nutty flavour, and there are quinoa crackers that are a little lower in fat with a huge crunch and they go fantastic with hummus for breakfast. Swallow.

OK...wild game...have only ever had venison twice. It was good both times but it isn't anything I would go out of my way to get.

Pickled beets are YUM! But I've never had beets any other way. Oh wait...the beet CHIPS are good.

Oatmeal is a necessary evil. I don't really LIKE it...but it's so freaking good for you...I am trying.

It has been so long since I responded that I had to write done each thing so I could remember to address each one. LOL

I don't really like lemons only in water.

I do like some flavored water not all. I like fruit in my water like strawberries and pineapples lemons and limes.

I use ground turkey instead of ground beef in chili, spaghetti and tacos. I do not like turkey burgers. Yuck!

I have to be honest, I had to google what a caper was and Im not impressed. Im with Jo on this, just in Caesar dressing!

I really like milk chocolate, Dove and Lindt are my faves!

What about ground chicken? What do you do with that?

Aw, Mo... thanks for caring. :) I have paperwork for blood tests, so that should be done before the end of March. As for chocolate, it's a trigger and a response to a trigger. If I'm eating chocolate and it's not what I want to do, something's is wrong.

Off Topic...Jo...I really, really HATE to ask this question...but when is the last time you had a full blood workup? You know crazy weird dry mouth can be a sign of diabetes. Yes...it can also be a million other things...but you should probably at least mention that to your Doc next time you go.

And sorry I have to disagree with you & go all Jeneen Roth on you, but I don't have forbidden foods. Chocolate (for me) isn't a sin & the death of all things good. I don't really have a favorite...I just like good DARK chocolate generally with something like coffee or orange or raspberry mixed in. Good & good for me!!!

Capers -- only in Caesar salad dressing

The dry mouth thing happens a lot with beverages, from Pepsi/Coke to the Mio water flavourer to tea. Yes, tea. I like this herbal apple cinnamon tea I have, and I often have it without sugar or milk, but regardless of what I put in it, I will be very thirsty afterwards. Even natural flavours will often have the same effect.

(going against nearly every healthy eating habit we are trying to create)

Capers: Cautious swallow.

Ground turkey: Swallow if it's prepared like turkey (with herbs & seasonings for fowl)
and it's not trying to pass itself off as beef in a recipe or a burger.

Flavored waters: swallow when I make them, but I rarely take the time any more. Spit commercial brands.

Lemons: swallow!

Jo & Mo Dry mouth is commonly caused by chemical(s) food additives used as a stabilizer, preservative, flavor enhancer, etc. If it's natural or sounds good they will list it, but if it's synthetic it is not on the label when it's below a certain percentage. They don't have to list trace amounts of anything. Food industry and the FDA calls it an incidental additive. One of my pet peeves.

Flavored water & Pepsi make your mouth DRY??? Wow...well slap my fanny & call me MARGE. LOL! I never heard of such a thing Ms Jo!

Ground turkey is not something I go out of my way to buy...but I'm not grossed out or weirded out either.

Small capers are ok. Big ones kind of get annoying.

Lemons: make a funny face & swallow.
Avocado: like Mo, I've tried it in all kinds of foods by itself, and I can't palate it. It has to be guac or mixed with mayo or salad dressing.
Flavoured water: No. As in No. Way. In. My. Glass. I've tried several different kinds, and the only one I can kinda handle is lemon or lime in my water. I find all the other flavours leave my mouth dry, like I just had a can of Pepsi.

Ground Turkey (instead of ground beef, for example)

Now don't get me wrong...I LOVE guacamole, but for some reason, I cannot eat avocado by itself. I've tried. Spread on sammiches instead of mustard or mayo. In a salad. On a cracker with a bit of hummus or something. No go. And also, even when I'm eating guac, sometimes I will get this weird feeling, like I want to be sick. I have to stop & slow down & let it pass. It's the weirdest thing.

LEMONS rock!!!

Does anyone do the infused/flavored water? What do you put in your water? I have a friend who does raspberries & I can't wait to try that!!!

Cinnamon waffles sound like a swallow, but you'd need to balance all the carbs out with some nice peanut butter or eggs for protein.

Oh I know...AVACADO.

Bean sprouts are another SPIT.

What's wrong with popping berries like candy if you've measured your portion? Bought some frozen berries & going to do some sort of smoothie thing. YUM!

Cilantro -- swallow, but it's gotta be in something.

And since I seem to be on a Chinese veggie kick --

Bean sprouts
