When she's barking or someone is coming in the house, I tell Oreo to "get in your cage" (that's what we call it, it's her kennel & safe spot). She'll get in in but as soon as I turn my back she's right back out and sniffing whoever came in. She don't jump, thankfully, but she likes to sniff feet & legs

My grandson tells her, very sternly, to 'sit' and she does: right in front of him. It's my fault she is so on top of him. I haven't trained her to go lie down in her place.

The dog trainer at her doggy day care who used to train the dogs for shows (after they had to move the dolphins out because of some virus) at the Shedd Aquarium here in Chicago said that both Australian Shepherds and Border Collies "guard" little kids like that. She's some of both so she's got the guarding gene X 2. I think Leo always knew she wouldn't hurt him so he was never afraid of her but he doesn't like it when she licks his feet. They call her breed Baussie and she is bossy.
I'm sure any little kid related to you would love Oreo. It's in the genes.

Glad your fur-baby is doing good. I know if Oreo seen a skunk she'd go after it and then we'd be in trouble with the smell, lol.

Sounds like lots of fun with everyone around. When we have smaller kids around I'm so paranoid about Oreo. I know she won't bite, but the herding can be scary for the little ones and me!!

Thank you for the warning. I worry about her because she doesn't like a group of young teen-agers that sometimes hang around our house. I bring her in when they're around. But this was a skunk because it happened near the corner of our garage behind an Alberta Spruce. I think she has had experience with skunks and when she saw the raised tail, she pivoted away from it and only caught the faintest wisp of the odor/spray on her face. I hope she learned her lesson. I think the skunk did as I don't smell them around anymore.
We've had lots of company including my youngest grandchild. She takes her guarding duties very seriously and now that everyone has left, she's really taking it easy. She was "on" for five days. We both are exhausted but it was fun.

That don't sound like it could be skunk at all. I would think that even the slightest bit would stink really bad. When you washed your fur-baby, did it feel oily? Used motor oil has that metalic scent and I know some people can be really mean. Could you have had a neighbor that sprayed her with something bad?

I hope your baby is doing better. emoticon

My dog got sprayed in the face by something but it doesn't smell like skunk. It seemed to hurt her eyes and had a metallic scent about it that I could feel in the back of my throat. I washed her eyes and head and took off all my clothes and bagged them. Then I took a bath. She was very upset and kept pacing all evening. Any ideas what it was? Maybe the first spray from a skunk but she managed to avoid the blast? Another animal? We live in Illinois. Help!

I didn't mean to post more than once - I lost my wireless signal and I thought it was the website, so I clicked 'post message' more than once - I did just introduce myself as a Sparkpeople newbie. ;D

emoticon It's so hard to watch your your fur baby suffer, they are so stoic! And you wish it could be you who's suffering, so that you could tell the doctor what hurts, etc. I'm so glad your fur baby is okay. When our BC Eddie was a puppy, he bolted out the front door which was only open for a moment, ran into the road, and was hit by a car. Thank God I wasn't there at the time, or I might not have forgiven myself if I'd accidentally let him out. His leg was hurt, but he had an operation, and recovered. We learned to be very, very, very careful about opening doors when he was around that day, and we've never let it happen again. Eddie turns 13 October 2nd. Thank God that we could both afford to fix up our fur babies! I'm sure your BC will give you more happiness than any Christmas present. emoticon

I'm so glad to hear everything turned out good. I know it can be hard but, to me, so well worth it with all they give us. emoticon

Thanks for the support, I appreciate it! She had her surgery today and her doc said she came through it fine with no complications. I'm so pleased! I can't wait to pick her up tomorrow! It's going to be a lot of work for her rehab but DH and and I will be off work so we're up to it.

She blew out her ccl which is like our acl in our knees. DH took her out to potty and she bolted after a cat or bird or something in the yard and came back limping. She can't put any weight at all on her back leg and next week she will need surgery to fix it. So getting our baby fixed is our Christmas gift to ourselves this year. I'm just praying there are no complications and that she will come through it ok. She's having such a hard time and I just want her not to be broken anymore. Poor baby!!!
