Man, this calorie-counting can be mind boggling. I always thought Panera was a smart choice for going out. Fresh salads, sandwiches, soups. I looked at the nutritional guide online before going recently, and I'm so glad I did! The soups are a pretty good choice, depending on which one you choose. As for pairing it with a 1/2 sandwich or salad - I didn't really like the numbers, so I went without. Soup on it's own can be pretty satisfying and filling. Get the whole grain baguette and eat only half of it, a pretty decent lunch.
I never wanted to be a calorie counter. But now that I've "joined the club" I can see why I was never able to lose weight before!

Shann..a great suggestion about asking for the box right away...out of sight, out of mind. I used to feel uncomfortable making special orders - on the side, minus this and that but I don't care anymore. I used to be a waitress too (great job in high school and college) and never minded.

I noticed last night that Culver's has wraps..has anyone tried them?

And someone told me that Natural Ovens (my favorite bagel) got bought out by....drumroll please...
Krispy Kreme..can you believe it! Although, as I told my dh, they are smart to see where the world is going :)

I don't really go to any one specific chain for their low-cal options. Generally they aren't very tasty, but I know that Chilis and Applebees and Ruby Tuesday's all have good "diet" options.

I just try to eat smart at the restaurants I love, but if I am feeling particularly weak, I just go to a Japanese/Sushi place. It's really easy to eat well there.

hahaha, Backerbabe - you got that right! Before Subway, she worked at KFC - now, that's really bad!

Her last restaurant job was at an upscale Japanese fusion/sushi bar, and, surprisingly enough, she never came home smelling like tempura.

Now that she has an office job, she says she really likes not smelling like fried food or sandwich bar, lol!

It could be worse Akorelc, she could of came home like smelling of burgers and fries because she worked at either McDonald's Burger King or Wendy's or any local burger joint. Now that's the worse. Smelling fries and you want some. Luckily that's never happened with me but I could imagine what it could be like.

Hello, Peggy:

So happy you joined us!

My daughter used to work at Subway and loved the wraps. She also told me about people who would ask for low-cal/carb sandwiches, then have the heavy cream dressings or regular bread, lol! I used to go in for a salad. I'm rather glad she doesn't work there anymore; she always came home smelling like sandwiches, hahaha!

Gotta say that our "fast food" is always Subway around here. No mayo/cheese and lots of mustard and veggies. Yummy!

Also, Applebee's (we call it the Apple Store at our house) is great.

As for other restaurants, don't be afraid to ask for a box FIRST THING when your meal arrives. I have been a waitress many times over the last 10 years. I admire (seriously) folks that cut their HUGE meals in half and take them home. Shows that they are wanting a healthier lifestyle.

Try sharing your meal with someone in your group. Sharing a meal might not help the waiter/waitress rack up a huge tab, but it will help your waistline TREMENDOUSLY!

Also, don't be afraid to ask for things: on the side, broiled/baked, sauteed in broth NOT fat, or substitute an ingredient (i.e. "Please omit the heavy cream sauce and add just a bit of olive oil to my pasta instead.")

Remember that it is YOUR MEAL and YOUR BODY. Don't be afraid to order how YOU like it. That restaurant isn't going to be with you at 5 a.m. when you are trying to burn off that Alfredo Sauce and garlic bread!

I, too, love Subway. If you choose carefully, you can get a very healthy meal. I get yellow mustard instead of mayo. Also, although a wrap might sound healthier, a bread choice sometimes has less calories and fat - weird, huh?! I always say no the the cheese, and load up on the veggies instead.
I also have been looking up nutrition info online before heading out to a restaurant. I feel I am now making much better choices when armed with this info. :)
Have a great day!

I deffinetly will the next time. My husband was going to get lunch for us. So I picked out what I was going to eat from the computer. Didn't see the wraps, but now I think of it I think I have heard of them. Thanks.

Have you tried the wraps at Subway...they are awesome! The wrap is whole grain, very thin and chewy..making me hungry just thinking about it!

There's a nice little calorie counter book I found that contains info on menus from a lot of popular restaurants. It's a whole lot easier if I just insert a link to my list of reads (sorry, I'm being both lazy and very rushed for time, today):

My husband and I love to eat out, but now with the diet it is so much trickier. Most of the time I try to have us go somewhere that I can find the nutritional value for before we go. Then we just plan meals for the rest of the day accordingly. It frees you up on the places that you can go!

I didn't make note of the calories, but TGIFriday's has a "smaller portions" selection. I like the grilled salmon on field greens with house vinaigrette.

Souper Salad is one of my favorite stops for lunch, if out shopping on the weekend, like today.

Tonight I went out to eat. Saw that Applebee's had an advertisement here on SP so I looked at it. Then I looked at two more restaurants. Decided they had the best variety of the ones I looked at. So we went their and had dinner. I had the Teriyaki Steak N Shrimp Skewers. It had 370 calories, 7 grams fat and 7 grams fiber. It was good. What restuarants do you go to that have great taste and a variety of lower calorie food?
