I like Ruby Tuesdays. I like to mix different kinds of lettuces and leafy greens. They have a nice selection on their salad bar. They also have have good choices like edamame and peppers. They have some healthy choices on the menu.

We go to a locally owned Mexican resturant. The owner finally came over to us and asked me why I never ate a lot. I remarked that while I like food, I will eat the salsa and fresh guacamale that they make, I do not like the dishes that are heavily covered with the the cheese sauces, etc. I told him I just do not eat the foods that are so dense,e tc. He began sitting with us and talking when we would come in. We went in one evenign and he brought the salsa and the guamolie to my talble and then rushed off. He came out fresh stuffed pepper, with a little cheese and some fresh herbs and a little shrimp. The next time he came out with some freshly cooked chicken with a wonderful sause from roasted peppers and a fresh salsa with pineapple, peppers, tomaotes, etc. He told me that he could not serve this in his resturant because the public thinks the other is the real deal. He has been making extra when he cooks for himself and his family for us to try. I think he has my hubby on speed dial because he will call hima nd tell him what he has made for that day and he has some for us. Another customer saw us eating one evening and called the owner over and asked him where that was on the menu. He had to admit it was not. Now he is serving the chicken dish in limited quanities. When he is out he is out. To bad the public will just accept what is these dense foods. He told me he would be calling as soon as he got some type of fresh fish for us to try.

Keep on track

I have a challenge because not many restaurants have organic foods so I choose very carefully but would rather eat @ home where I have the choices I want. Call me picky! emoticon

I started out top weight 245 but that was when I actually got on a scale. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia almost 20 years ago. Over the years I've learned that I do so much better when I eat organic foods and I haven't eaten red meat in years I have been gradually working more raw foods, vegetables and fruit into my diet. I avoid drive through resturants like the plague.

Breakfast out at the restaurant around the corner from my house (Feast). I ordered a no-cheese omelet, and took half home for another meal.

We have a local tea shop called Mystic Brew that does some really nice sandwiches and salads.

The also have a few dozen different varieties of tea, which I had been making my way through until I realised I needed to give up the caffeine. Thankfully, they also have a good selection of rooibos and herbal tea blends.

Because I was out and about I stopped here for my lunch today - I needed the proteins so went for their full English breakfast deal.

Rediscovering who I am, one tiny step at a time.

Thanks that gives me an idea. I can search for vegan places near me and maybe they will have a menu that doesn't over-do the portions per meal ratio.

We have a few local Vegan/Vegetarian restaurants that my hubby and I go to at least once a week. We are not fulltime vegans but the food is wonderful. All freshly made and real food...not processed!

I heard that there were restaurants back east that were mostly fresh produce and locally caught game. I think it would be interesting to eat at one of those restaurants. There was also one that moved around a lot and apparently had an internet following. I forgot the name.

My favorite foodie place in California is Los Angeles where there is a variety of many cultures of food.

My choice when eating out is always either steamed vegetables with chicken or fish or a salad without fattening dressing and extras.

Me too. I finally learned how to cook and my home made foods are way more tasty than eating out foods. My back up plan is to order either the fit fare, which isn't always the right amount of calories or a hamburger patty with no bread and maybe a scoop of cottage cheese or veggie without butter.

I went to Subways because of the $2 for a 6 inch sandwich in December. That was yesterday. Anyway, I noticed the calories and in a foot long, it was about 1000. I kept thinking how ironic that they say their sandwiches are healthy! Anyway, I knew the calorie count of the 6 inch which was 480 with flatbread. So I just had them cut it in half and had half for breakfast and half for lunch. I was not even slightly tempted to eat it all at once. I am so glad I live in a state where they made fast food folks put their calorie count where everyone can see them.

When I started at SparkPeople I kind of quit eating fast food cold turkey. We were going to Popeye's as our go-to quick meal when I did not feel like cooking and ordering pizza delivered, etc. I still have a delivery place but haven't used it in a couple months; we have a "pizza" pub that we go to and meet a friend every Wednesday but in reality it is more of an Italian restaurant and has lots of good, healthy choices (love the spinach salad) and its personal size pizza is even small enough so I don't worry about it. We were going to a seafood place near our home and that was wonderful because my husband does not eat fish generally so was the only way I could get my tuna and salmon but it is expensive so we now pretty much only go to the pizza pub and one or two other places occasionally.

I have finally, after 5-6 years here at SparkPeople, come to realize that restaurants aren't bad guys for me and even if I eat the worst thing there, as long as one isn't eating there that often, it doesn't really matter. Now I choose what I want/feel like eating and, if it is too large a portion, I don't eat it all. I'm a better friend to my body so I know what is going to disagree with me and weigh that in the balance of whether I want to eat it or not. I'm more responsible about my lactose sensitivity and take a Lactaid pill before I eat a lot of cheese or other dairy.

I use to despair because we'd be travelling and eat breakfast at a Waffle House and everything on their menu is fried and there's no fruits or vegetables at all, etc. Now I just go for the protein and to heck with it; I can make it up somewhere else (gas station apples and bananas, those poor things :-)

There is no pleasure worth forgoing just for an extra three years in the geriatric ward. ~John Mortimer

Me too. But I was surprised by the grilled chicken/fresh fruit salad at Chick Fil A. I would have had a lot more veggies on the salad if I had made it at home. Lite italian dressing on the side because it has a large amount of salt. I still felt the chicken was too salty. But I really notice sodium since I've been eating whole, unprocessed.

I supplemented with some veggies when I got home.

Texas roadhouse has a sirloin steak and you can get a sweet potato and roasted veggies as sides. Just tell them to put the butter and cinnamon/sugar on the side. Delicious.

Hubby and I went to one of our favorite Mexican resturants. It is locally owned and not oneof the chains that do not have really good food. I had a pepper with cheese and sauce. One of my favorite. I ate that and a few chips and saulsa and I was completely full. We go here about once every 6 weeks or so as it is some distance from our home

The family wants to take me out for birthday dinner. I'd rather stay home and cook for them. I can't figure out for the life of me where to do that where I CAN make healthy choices. Sodium goes through the roof no matter where we go. And then my system is out of whack for over a week.

Any opinions?
Besides the fast food places, we have Cracker Barrel, Texas roadhouse, Applebees, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Outback, Chinese buffets and Asian bistro, and a new Japanese Steakhouse.

A group of friends want to go out to dinner to celebrate an anniversary.
Most of us are watching what we eat of have special dietary needs.
We are going to Sweet Tomatoes Buffet where everyone will have many choices.
I am looking forward to going and seeing my friends.

I am going to The Noodle House for lunch today. going to get a big bowel of whole wheat noodles with fresh vegetables and chicken, shrimp or pork. The pork has no fat on it so it is a good choice. I might get it as we had shrimp last night and we have chicken every other night,.Yep talked myself in to it I am getting pork.

On Saturday I went to eat at a hole in the wall BBQ place with a friend. I ordered the 1/4 smoked chicken that was mostly breast, with a wing. I didn't eat the skin and just dipped the chicken in bbq sauce. I'm sure it was still higher in calories than if I had cooked at home, but I thought it was a pretty good choice considering where I was at. I also only ate half of my cornbread (which for me is a big deal because I LOVE cornbread) and just a few bites of the mac n cheese.

after eating organically for almost 4 months now, this weekend was a huge wake up call to my body. I ate out with a friend, had what I thought was the best selection on the menu, I had a chicken breast with cheese and a broccoli side at a local restaurant. The portions were huge, so I only ate the proper portion, and gave my friend the left overs to take home with here. By the time I got home I was bloated and not feeling great. I worked out for about 30 minutes to no avail. I felt like I had eaten poison. I was sick to my stomach.
The going organic was a choice, and I know now that eating out is simply not an option for me right now. I don't plan on being so strict with the organics forever, but for right now I wanted to give my body the best nutrients I could afford. SO, maybe 6 months more down the road and I will be able to add some other foods back into my diet, but I will be doing it at home and watching how my body reacts. But it will be things like crackers at first.
Totally enjoying the organic food ... tons of real flavor without having to add a lot of spices or fat to enhance the taste. CHOICES! whew....

be authentically you...

I went to this little mom and pop Italian place near our house. I was pretty proud of myself for picking whole wheat pasta with a ton of veggie and some grilled chicken. I didn't miss the heavy sauces and all the cheese I normally would have picked. It was actually some of the best Italian food I have ever had and I will defiantly be going back!

I wonder how bad Tim Hortons chicken noodle is. I know they at least try to use whole ingredients. I was sick this am (God please tell me it was just a bad tomato...eek) and I really wanted soup to calm my tummy. I have yet to make GOOD chicken noodle soup from scratch so I caved and got Tim Hortons

I always thought I had to show an AARP card to order off the senior menu! Maybe I'll keep my scattered silver hairs then. Or I can let my husband order for me, he looks like a grownup. :) The thing that just boggles me about restaurants is the amount of sodium! My husband keeps talking about starting our own restaurant.

Today I ate at Applebees and I had the steak and shrimp off the under 550 calories section. No pop for me, just water.

Yesterday I was at McDonald's and had a quarter pounder with cheese, not the greatest sandwich on the menu, but I just had the sandwich.

An excuse is just a challenge to figure out how to do something different.

I went to Golden Corral over the weekend and was a little worried about going to a buffet at first- I looked it up online through SparkPeople first and found some ideas about what to eat/what to stay away from.

I made sure to drink lots of water beforehand so I would be hydrated/not overeat. I started out at the salad bar and made a salad with mesclun greens, tomato, shredded carrot, broccoli, sunflower seeds and soy nuts with oil and vinegar.

I made sure to eat slowly and enjoy my food. I remembered seeing that their "Awesome Pot Roast" and Collard Greens were a good choice, so I went up looking for that on my second trip. I didn't find the collards though, and got turnip greens instead. I'd never had them before- but they were really tasty!

I had a cup of tea after dinner and managed to stay away from the dessert table. And....I felt satisfied when we left!

Bob Evans has the Senior Menu which I order from, or the Savor size. Which I still take some home for another meal. Other resturants offer this also.

We have a small number of local resturants that cook with fresh ingredients. Hubby and I enjoy these places. Quite often I order from the tapas or appertizer menu as the portions are smaller and I do not want a full plate. If ordering from the full menu, I put one half in a box before I eat. One place has the best crab cakes so I order the appertiser that is only two small (about half the size of the dinner cakes) and a side of tabouli or the tomatoe with monorialla with vinegar and oil. Another one has the best black beans and rice, so I order a side odrer with a small salsa to put on the dish. We go to these places at odd times, late lunch or early dinner and we have met most of the chefs and talk with them about their food. I told one about the roasted cherry tomaotes that we often have at home. The next time we went in, he came out with a serving for me and advised he had put them on the menu and they were a hit It made me feel good that he did this. Most of these places serve what is available at the local farmer's market on that day. Fresh fish that has come into the docks that morning also. Most of the time, it is no more expensive than the chain resturants in our area, Olive Garden, Chilli, Red Lobster, etc.

Keep on track

Did you make a good choice while dining out? Let us know what restaurant you ate at and what made you decide to eat what you did.
