My Real Food achievements:
I no longer eat fast food. If I want a hamburger and french fries, I'll make my own leaner version.
I no longer do diets that restrict certain types of foods or force one to eat unappetizing food; it's gotta be both healthy and yummy so that I can create a diet that keeps me at goal weight.

Things I'm still working on:
I'm single and the pre-packaged frozen dinner is so convenient. I'm working on cutting down my consumption of them and only buying ones that are made with whole foods like Amy's.
Portion contol with desserts - a real brownie is fine but not three or four of them!

-Evie

As much as I love eating at home, I also enjoy dining out. However, dining out is usually a culprit in weight gain as the foods being offered in the menu is simply delectable. For me to enjoy food while staying fit, i make it a point to order foods that is not heavy on cream oil and sugar. I also ask the servers if they offer the same food in a lite version. In topic, I enjoy ordering grilled lobster and shrimps whenever I dine out.

I am a big fan of salmon. I do not like to eat it out as they do not get it as done as I like it. We usually fix this at home on the grill or I have several different recipes that we try at different times when we do not have time to fire up the grill

If you like seafood, what's your favorite?

I like lobster ravioli - two favorites in one: pasta and lobster. The creamy sauce may be a little high in calories; however, a good salad balances this out. As long as I watch my caloric intake for the day, I don't feel guilty about this little indulgence.

How about you?

And, do you also indulge in a little wine with that seafood? If so, what's your pick?

How does seared sashimi-grade tuna, dressed with a tangy mango sauce, served on a bed of Pacific rice pilaf and with a salad of field greens and carrot slaw sound to you?

Well, it was delicious, and enjoyed at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants - obviously not your ordinary Tex-Mex. Dessert shared with my Mom was a slice of flan (I'm not fond of the overly creamy type, this one is a firm custard) with fresh blackberries.

After 4 months of hearty comfort foods, my body was so ready for something light.

So, how are you doing?

Any Superbowl plans - what do you plan to serve/munch on?

There is life beyond matzo bread!

But I better get to thinking about that picnic or it will be not so healthy with my wine. I think it should be great especially since the BF has been in Australia -- so it will be nice to have a sort of romantic activity together.

sorry about that. I have a tough week ahead of me. Dinner at an event tomorrow that will only include hot dogs and hamburgers and chips-- that sort of thing. I would eat before but that would mean missing my work out. Wednesday night is a work meeting that is providing food -- I won't get home until 8 and no time to get to the gym. Thursday my boyfriend gets back from 30 days away...not sure if he'll be starving or exhausted -- maybe I better make dinner that night and then I am packing a picnic for a twilight cruise on Friday...wine and cheese kind of thing. I better plan in lots of veggies and fruit to accompany that.

oh that does sound good -- I had Italian last night too but didn't do so well. Shared a grilled veggies as an ap, waited to eat bread until my entree came (meaning there was still some in the basket at the end of the meal), had pumpkin ravioli (and shared it with my friend but ate some of her spinach manicotti, and then ate dessert (but I had the berries with zabiglione which was better than some things I could have ordered)

My hubby and mom met me for lunch, today, and we went to the Italian restaurant on the ground floor of my building. The food is good, but mostly heavy, and the portions so large that you know you'll need a take-home box, as soon as your dish is set before you. Plus, veggies and salads are extras to be ordered a la carte.

So, I ordered a house salad and the lightest dish I know of - crab and shrimp cannelloni made with a crepe, rather than a traditional noodle - and it's wonderful. I can only eat 1 of 3, and always end up taking the rest home. My mom had grilled asparagus with her cannelloni, and my hubby had a salad and took his leftovers home.

Well, at least I'll still be carb-loading for my race on Sunday, LOL!

Bread is my downfall. I love ciabatta or other dense bread dipped in seasoned olive oil and balsamic vinegar. But, it doesn't love me, it makes me bloat. So, I'm usually pretty good about avoiding the bread, but it's hard to.

Whoever said you can just run off the calories lied, LOL!

My office is located in an upscale urban "village" setting - combination condo residences and shopping - but, there aren't many reasonably priced choices for lunch. To go out for a decent salad will be more than $10.

A Subway sandwich shop just opened down the block from our office, however, and they offer egg whites on the breakfast menu, and whole grain breads and simple salads on the lunch menu. Across the courtyard is a coffee shop where we can get steel-cut oatmeal, hummus and couscous salad as healthful alternatives to the high-calorie/high-fat choices at the Italian restaurant on our ground floor.

Then, there's the sushi bar across from the Italian place. However, even though I can assemble a few appetizers to create a healthy meal, like edamame, miso soup and sunomono, that's too expensive for a daily habit (but Japanese cooking is comfort food to me!).

Well, it's a challenge to eat out healthfully, and without blowing the budget, but it can be done!

Eating out has been rough for me lately, and I haven't found anything totally healthy or whole food, but I will say that one thing I'm craving so much right now is a huge salad bar with tons of fresh veggies, egg whites, and fruit.

Yesterday, Tee and I had to go to Ft Bliss to take care of some paperwork to get her a dependant's ID card.
After we were done, we found "The Kalbi House", a Korean Restaurant of great renown among the few Koreans who live in the El Paso area, and any current or former Military who were stationed in Korea, and want GENUINE Korean food.
NO ONE who is not a member of this one Korean family does ANYTHING at that place, which suites me just FINE.
The Bulgogi was INCREDIBLE!!! It was exactly the same, served with the hot and spicy side dishes as it was when I was stationed in Korea. KOREAN music, NOT American, or Mexican, was playing, and it was GREAT. I got to spend my lunch in Korea without getting on a plane. The female server even chatted with me in Korean, and told me that my Korean was still pretty good, even though I havent used it in twenty years. (GREAT lie, but I enjoyed it). Brie

I just had a lunch of roasted vegetables over lettuce and grilled shrimp with Balsamic dressing on the side. It was served with a small slice of baggette -- would have loved more bread but I definitely didn't need it. Great meal and I resisted the beer that looked so refreshing (I am on vacation)

That sounds delicious!

My DH isn't fond of couscous, it's not something he grew up with or learned to appreciate. But, I love it and try to make it the way I learned to love it in North Africa (more savory than sweet, though), with lots of veggies in a savory stew. I do like to add some chicken (my trainer is constantly on my case about not eating enough protein) or lamb.

Mint tea is awesome and so delicious freshly made. Great idea for a dessert treat instead of something laden with empty calories.

Great meal!

I ordered vegetarian couscous last night, and tried to eye-ball a home-sized portion, which I sectioned out on my plate; sparkling water instead of wine; and a wonderful sweet glass of mint tea instead of dessert.

Tapas are wonderful! I love the tradition of little dishes.

My mom and I went to the local annual Junior League Christmas Affair; it had been a good 15 years since the last time we had gone. When it was interrupted by a fire (we've yet to learn what caused it), we decided to walk a couple of blocks to a nearby restaurant for a light lunch. She had steamed mussels and I had one of my favorites salads, a shrimp remoulade on a bed of spinach and field greens and avocado. We also indulged in desserts, as their ginger creme brulee and seasonal pumpkin cheesecake are "to die for."

yum!

I went out with a boyfriend to a tapas restaurant tonight -- kept it to one glass of wine -- it is small plates and the portions are small -- we ordered 4 plates + olives (and then split dessert) We thought about ordering a few more portions -- maybe one more each to split and then chose not to and I turned down the offer for another glass or wine after dinner) Not great but not bad...we had spanish meatballs (split 3 shooter marble size) a lamb stuffed pepper (one of the long skinny ones), white fish in a white wine sauce (maybe 2 oz), and a tomato slices, roasted red pepper and fresh mozzarella salad (oh yeah and a profiterole for dessert --oops but it was smaller than a standard dessert)

No Trader Joe's out my way; we're the hometown of Whole Foods.

Tonight, my mom had a craving for seafood, so we went to Red Lobster (don't laugh). After my gluten free pasta at lunch, I tried to find reasonable choices on the RL menu. Well, it's cold outside tonight, so I opted for a cup of clam chowder, a Caesar's salad and the broiled scallops appetizer.

Gluten free pasta primavera for lunch, today - needed lots of "doctoring" with sea salt and freshly ground pepper, otherwise alright.

Still a bit bloated from the weekend's disastrous marathon experience. :(

Ate at the buffet restaurant on campus today, and was surprised how much they are starting to emphasis local, real food.

I haven't tried coconut chutney, but I do love Indian food - yum!

This weekend was full of dining out and trying to balance fresh with prepped. Fortunately, my weight fluctuated by only 1-1.5 lbs and I managed to avoid bloating.

Didn't avoid Halloween chocolate, though, lol!

At the Indian restaurant on Friday, I think everything we had was real: Chicken Saag, Dyosa stuffed with potatoes, and Veggie Uppadam. Incidentally, I tried coconut chutney for the first time and it rocked my world!

Last night, carb load (marathon in 2 weeks!).

Tonight, sushi and tempura (I know, I shouldn't have done the tempura).

Breakfast this week: oatmeal.

Lunches this week: all fresh, salads, fruit, etc.

But, tonight's dinner probably put back on the couple of pounds I lost this week, LOL!

Tonight had capellini with tomatoes and basil ribbons and garlic in a very light olive oil. It was luscious and I didn't feel too guilty about it.

Breakfast--oatmeal with raisins, brown sugar and low fat milk.

Lunch--Salad of fresh field greens with dressing on the side, with grilled chicken and a box to take half home for a later meal.

Dinner--fresh broiled or grilled salmon, flounder, with fresh steam vegetables.

Keep on track

Salmon and tuna sashimi, field greens with edamame and raspberries, suonomo (I can never pronounce this) - Japanese cucumbers in mirin and rice wine vinegar, and half a crisp apple. This was what I brought and had for lunch today, yum!

Not so great this evening either. They brought in Italian for the meeting -- three types of pasta, with a red meat sauce, alfredo, and a vegetable and chicken -- I had some of each, plus some salad, and some cheesey bread bites and a cookie. Nothing healthy about any of it and I even had a bit of coca-cola -- a complete bust and now I am wired on caffine (I don't normally drink any)

Don't laugh -

Today, my office mate decided I needed to get away from the desk and go with her and our other teammates to lunch. I was in a particularly foul mood, due to some stupid office politics going on that will negatively impact our department, and frustrated with a particular web application I was trying to implement.

So, we went to our local cafeteria type restaurant, supposedly for something relatively healthy. Well, none of us followed that plan, although we each had some sort of fresh vegetables with our meal. I had liver and onions, sauteed baby red potatoes, chopped salad and steamed broccoli. So, that wasn't a complete loss.

Well, I made it through the event last night without too much trouble and then went out for a salad and fresh baked flat bread with a glass of wine afterwards. Tonight may be trickier -- not sure where they are bringing in the food for the meeting -- likely BBQ or the like...we'll see.

Freshly made, real tortilla soup. I say "real," because the broth is real (not canned), the chicken was real (not rubber cubes), avocado is always wonderful, the veggies were fresh, the flavor was perfect, and the corn tortillas weren't bad, either.

There's nothing like real, fresh tortilla soup on a grey day!

This shouldn't be too hard. Let's think about my challenges this week. A movie screening with food samples (but the focus is fresh, local, seasonal foods), a meeting where the food will be provided (thinking about packing dinner or at least snacks) and then a weekend board meeting with all food provided. It is going to be a tough week.

Your challenge, should you accept it, is to find the "real foods" on the menu when you go out to eat. It doesn't matter if it's breakfast, lunch, dinner or post-theater supper (yep, some folks still do that) or your favorite fast food establishment - how well and healthfully can you eat?

Share your findings!
