My dad is a deer fanatic. IF there was a deer baseball bat season - he do it.

I barely have time for deer much less fish and birds.

My dad is also an upland bird hunter, he has been out in the Upper Peninsula a couple weeks ago and went out yesterday for some woodcock. We had some of his birds, woodcock and a grouse. Not exactly what I harvested myself, but wild game whenever I can get invited to it is a good day.

Yep - I bought a flashlight that suppose to make blood glow. Everyone says it works great - Man I must be really colorblind because I could not see the glowing red they were seeing.

Hopefully we will get a deer Saturday - opening inline - we have a good track record!

Here in Michigan, in my "zone" in the lower half of the Lower Peninsula, we can hunt with shotgun, muzzle-loader, or handgun, but no rifles. I preferred my scoped .44-magnum, but the only deer I took was with a 12-guage. My dad had the .44-mag that year and took the deer after I had hit it, but not well enough, and my pump action gun jammed racking the next round. I am grateful, I didn't want to track that deer through the swamp and it hesitated just long enough for him to put it down. We had a great piece of property to hunt back then (about 20 years ago now) and I went deer hunting just to be out there more than to get deer. Often I would go with the beagle for rabbits or by myself for squirrels and be more successful.

I am pretty squeamish about gutting deer too. I have no problem with fish though, that is so weird.

Great talking with you. Maybe someday they will come up with a better solution for us color-blind hunters than bringing someone along who can see the blood in the dead grass for us.

WOW!!!! Me too. I also have a hard time finding them when I know where they died. I ALWAYS hunt with someone (my old Dad - he's like a bloodhound although his age is showing). I shoot them and he finds them. When I was a kid (30 years ago) he once told me if I shoot them he would gut them. He guts all my deer too! I got big hands - hard to get the neck stuff.

I know he not going to live forever so I hunt with him as much as he can which is pretty much every Saturday in Oct - Nov - Dec.

On the gutting thing - I am a real good shot and on snow - my color blindness becomes an advantage - I can see them like they have neon lights. I get 2 sometimes 3 deer every year (and my Dad guts them all - I recall gutting 2 deer in all my life).

Back to snow - I was shooting at 3 running deer on the ridge about 150 yards out (.243 got the range) and my Dad and daughter where just standing next to me saying where??? I missed the first one - must have hit a tree but chest shot the third. No shot at second. I normally hunt with 30-06 but on snow - I go for the .243 for distance.

I wish I could harvest my own venison, I prefer it. I used to hunt every year, but I am colorblind and can't track a wounded animal, I respect them too much to risk irresponsible kills that I can't properly follow up. Usually I get some meat from my Dad and Brother-in-law, but that isn't quite the same.

Now fishing and gardening I can do!

I plan to use that fish stock I made back in May for some panfish chowder tomorrow, with real fancy ingredients. I harvested the fish myself, but not most of the veggies and herbs that go in it (although my garden is doing nicely, I didn't grow celery or mushrooms...)

I had fish last night. Not fresh caught though. Tonight will be turkey breast and I plan on trying them on the George Foreman Grill. I've grilled them outside on the gas grill and they were 'fair' tasting. They are excellent fried but my diet can't handle fried food. So, tonight will be the indoor grill and I hope they turn out good.

If anyone has suggestions for seasoning before grilling, I'll be glad to know and will check back later for responses.

Thanks.

My dinner last night was fantastic. Channel catfish, zucchini hash browns made from last years harvest (frozen shreds), rice, and my home grown raspberries (last years harvest too, its a bit early for fresh anything here in Michigan, except perhaps Morel mushrooms). My friend gave me some of the eggs from his 10 chickens.

I grew up in a fishing family and have fond memories of lake of the ozarks in Missouri. Me and my 4 siblings used to fish all summer long and bring home the largest portion of the family's food. I remember many times covering the top of a picnic table with all the fish we caught. Mom would pack the cleaned fish into half gallon milk cartons and freeze them. Back then, half gallon cartons were made of paper. Remember? I remember catching catfish and they were the best you ever ate! You can't find them nearly as good in a restaurant. I still like fishing but I don't get to go very often.

Hunting has moved to the front of my outdoor activity. I eat deer meat a couple to a few times a week. I also cooked some turkey a couple of days ago. I like it best fried. One thing for sure though, my weight problem didn't come from eating too much venison or turkey.

I'm going to host a catfish dinner with the end of last summer's channel catfish fillets from the freezer. I'm going to go out to the lake sometime soon and start stocking back up for next winter, I haven't made the time to get out there yet in Michigan to my favorite lake but once I hear that drag singing I'll be hooked by the fever!

Venison burger tonight. Kids will have tacos - not sure what I will have - Maybe a Smart One with some burger added for flavoring or maybe some tacos. Something tells me tacos filled with meat and cheese will have too many calories.

Will be having fresh fish tonight. Cleaned a mess of bluegills yesterday. It is hard to beat fresh, never frozen, panfish filets. Most likely we will bake them but I might search for a new recipe here on SP.

Made a big pot of Venison Chili today....Haaa almost was the hottest chili ever!

I put in 2 tsp Paprika then 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper when I realized I accidentally switch the bottles and had put 2 tsp Cayenne Pepper in and 1/4 tsp Paprika!!!!

Luckily I hadn't mixed the spices in yet I was able to scoop out most of the Cayenne Pepper.

The Chili still has a quite a kick to it...lol

I posted my recipe on the Recipe Thread.

Hi Robert...I just saw a couple of bear recipes in a book somewhere...I'll see if I can find them and post them in the recipe thread.

Someone once told me the best thing to do with bear meat is throw it in the garbage...but I know it can be good because someone brought some to the Clubs Game Feed a couple of years ago and it was very good!

Good Luck on your hunt.

Please forgive me I made a goof. We can harvest hens in fall in those few counties. but in those counties, a person has to have or have access to 100 acres of land.
Thank you and I will let you know :)

Our spring turkey here is April 18 to May 15...same thing as you we can't shoot hens cuz they're nesting but we can get 2 Toms. Fall is a different story Hens or Toms doesn't matter but only can get 1 turkey. My DH and I stopped by Gander Mt tonight to do a little shopping. Got a couple new mouth calls and a new hen decoy...can't wait till April!!

Good Luck to you...hope you get one this Spring...besure to let us know!

The kids made themselves venison tacos Sunday (microwave burger, seasoning, shredded cheese, taco shells).

Good thing they help fill the freezer!

Natureworks and Autumnleaves...glad to see you on the boards.

Natureworks...That's a good size perch. Perch is my favorite fresh water fish...we lived in Port Clinton on Lake Erie for 10 yrs. I loved going out and getting a nice cooler full of them.
I'll post my meatloaf recipe on our cooking thread...check it out.

Autumn...Not sure what State your in, but here in Ohio, Fall Turkey over laps with deer season. I got my first turkey (a Hen) when she accidentally walked under my tree stand during Deer Bow 3 yrs ago. Finally called in my first Tom 2 yrs after being snookered for 8 or 9 yrs...My Hubby and were starting to think them darn birds were smarter than us....Haaa!

Think there are some of my old turkey hunting stories in the old story thread...I'll try to copy paste them to the new "Hunting Stories Thread"...Sometimes hunting with me is like hunting with the 3 Stooges...Haaa! When you get a chance drop by the Stories thread and post some of your own hunting adventures....I know if you've been hunting turkeys for 4 yrs you've got some.....lol.

Probably will either have rabbit or turkey tomorrow-- both harvested by hubby. Turkeys seem to know when I am coming and hide except during deer season and then they are everywhere LOL I am hoping to get my first turkey this spring-- been trying for 4 yrs

Glad to see some movement on the messageboard. What is your recipe for venison meatloaf?

We had perch. My husband brought home one yesterday that was 1 pound 5 ounces...huge for a perch around here (St. Lawrence River). In total he brought home 92! I am usually out there fishing with him, but I had to stay home and catch up on my bookkeeping this weekend.

First let me say it isn't all that healthy so I eat it in small portions. It is the tator tos that jack the calories up the most though... Doh!

Instead of making it in a 9x13 pan I tend to do a square pan.

Deer Tator Tot Casserole

Brown 1# ground venison (or any ground meat of your choice) and season with your favorite herbs and spices.

Mix 1 can cream of mushroom soup with 1/2 a can of water.

Spray baking sheet with lo-cal cooking spray.

Place browned meat in bottom of pan and pour soup mixture over the top. Add rows of tator tots to cover the top and bake at 350F for 1 hour.

My mom made this all the time when we were kids and I love it!

She would often add green beans or corn, but I prefer to add a can or two of mushrooms.

I've also made it using tomato soup instead of cream of mushroom and sprinkle a 1/4 cup of parmesean on top when I pull it out of the ovem.

Some great ideas, thanks! I think I'll do venison Taco's too. I don't have any elk, but my husband and I are hoping to go on a Caribou hunt in the next couple of years.

Any idea how I get the weight loss scale/tape measure, etc. under my profile/name? Everyone else seems to have them and I don't see where I should be adding one or how to get it to show up. Let me know if you would.

Thanks

Tomorrow will be lake trout, stuffed with fake crab, onions and celery, baked in foil.

I was looking through the recipes and didn't see anything for Canada goose (or goose at all). A good idea for hunters is to mix half ground goose breast (I pulse it in the food processor for a while) with half venison hamburger and then make it the way you usually do. Really flavorful and a good use of goose.

Forgot to tell you all I cooked up the tom I shot in spring and the hen I got 11/13 for Thanksgiving.

When Glenn cleaned them he had skinned them both.

For the hen I injected it with a teriyaki & honey marinade then put bacon strips across to keep it from getting dry.

The tom I injected with a creole butter marinade then put a cajun rub on it. They both came out great. The only bad thing was the toms dark meat was so tough we couldn't eat it. But the breast meat of the tom was the BEST...even beat out the store bought turkey my sister made.
