I hope everyone is having a happy and healthy holiday season. I am back to making progress after being ill for a while.

My father went out to SD for pheasants this year and did ok, not super like some years. Unfortunately one of the guys he went out from Michigan with on the trip caught viral bronchitis or something and everyone on the trip brought that home to spread to all their families, it was very contagious. That set me back a bit, but it's all good now.

No deer for us this year, I am not a hunter I just fish, but my dad usually gets a deer during gun season. He just didn't see much the few times he went out.

Have a happy Christmas and a merry New Year!

No luck with gun season this year. Deer season is in until 2/2, so I got my bow out last week. I haven't touched it in over 20 years. I couldn't believe that I still had some accuracy. I got my first bulls eye after just a few time practicing, so maybe I can luck out with the bow. I'm letting things settle down in my field for a few days to see if I get some movement out there. Keeping my fingers crossed. My shoulders are very sore but after a few weeks of practice I would hope they start feeling better.

Did you make someone smile today?

Cold here to, freezing rain right now and snow tomorrow. Who says it never snows in Seattle? The temperature has not been above 25 degrees for the past two weeks. That's pretty cold for us so close to the ocean.
Holiday time is a busy time for me in retail and I am Photo manager and Lead over the electronics department. Selling TVs like crazy and tablets, and all the other gadgets everyone has to have. I do love my work or I would not be there.
Have a great rest of your week everyone.

I have tons of allergies, I take a prescription for those and it keeps them at bay. My doctor swears by Zyrtec and wants me to switch but if my current prescription is working I will stick with this one,
Hope you feel better soon,

That sounds like a wonderful time of the year. I don't relish the winters here in Michigan but I wish it would freeze so the weed pollens would go away. I'm housebound by illness caused from allergy-infection since it is so late in the year and yet so warm we have not had our first hard freeze to kill the vegetation yet. I want to go for a walk and enjoy the fall.

Well here we are mid October and the colors on the trees here in Western Washington are putting on a show. Time for sweaters and hot cocoa.
We are headed to the October Fest in Leavenworth to enjoy all the songs and dancing they have wonderful art studios there as well.
We will visit our favorite orchard to pick up a box of apples and pears while we are in the area.
Halloween is around the corner and so are the temptations of the candy that comes with the holidays.
So make good choices and you will reach you goal.
Happy Autumn everyone, Sandy

The Salmon run is on here everyone is catching their limit every day. We are sold out of pink humpy lures at work and we ordered 50,000 this year.
I sold a bear tag and deer tag today and another customer was buying his second bear tag.
So not only is it fishing season but hunting season here.
Hope everyone is doing well.

Fly fishing yes good at the sport, still working on that. The biggest rainbow I caught was only about 8 inches long.
Enjoy the sport and wish I had more time to get to the streams and rivers around here.

THAT'S A NEGATIVE!

Wednesday, 07 August 2013

Okay, we're gonna burst one of those diet myths today! You may have heard that some foods, because they're so low in calories and more difficult to digest, they up becoming "negative calorie" foods. The idea being that some foods are so low in calories and the body's digestion process itself, cause that food to have a "negative-calorie" affect when you eat them. That is, it costs your body more energy to burn the calories than those foods even contain! Well, I think you'll have to agree with me, at least it's an interesting concept, huh?

Chewing and digesting a stalk of celery burns about as many calories as when you sit watching paint dry!

Foods like celery and some citrus fruits have long enjoyed that claim. When you consider the miniscule number of calories in an entire stalk of celery, you may be tempted to fall for the negative-calorie legend. But when you consider the number of calories it takes your body to actually fuel the digestion process, those numbers are pretty miniscule, too. Although chewing and digesting a stalk of celery may seem like a lot of work, it actually burns about as many calories as when you sit watching paint dry!

Yes, certain fruits and vegetables do have extremely low calorie counts, such as celery, grapefruit and mushrooms. And while it might be tempting to think of them as negative-calorie foods, it's just not true. Now don't get me wrong. Those extremely low-calorie fruits and veggies are good for your body and important additions to your weight-loss program. But they're not going to give you that so-called negative-calorie affect you may have heard about.

The only true proven way to achieve a negative-calorie-energy balance for weight-loss, is to burn more calories than your body takes in. How many times have I told you that, huh? And how do you achieve that goal? Hey, I've told you that lots of times, too! You've got to cut back on the number of calories you consume each day and make exercise a daily part of your life.

Low-calorie, fiber-full and nutrient-rich foods will satisfy you for a lot fewer calories than the processed stuff that caused you to gain weight in the first place.

Be sure to eat more nutrient-dense foods that fill you up while providing plenty of vitamins, minerals, proteins and fiber, the good stuff your body needs. Those low-calorie, fiber-full and nutrient-rich foods will satisfy you for a lot fewer calories than the processed stuff that caused you to gain weight in the first place.

So, is there such a thing as "negative calorie" foods? The short answer is NO! But, there are plenty of foods you can eat, like lots of fresh fruits and vegetables that, along with your daily workouts will help you see a NEGATIVE effect on the numbers of that scale of yours! So, when planning your meals and snacks, I guess you should at least...THINK negative!

Love,

RICHARD

I remember the mesquitos on the lake in the row boat with my business partner. We were catching bass (1992 was the year).

Hey - I took twins girls - 6 years old over to the local creek. Casted both lines with marshmallow fish bait. My luck - they both caught a trout at the same time. I got pictures but man it was a pain and you know the hook would not come out of the second fish - I think he was close to pooping it out it was in so deep.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I took my niece fishing (she is 6) yesterday and they weren't really biting, I caught a couple 'gills and a couple bass and she couldn't catch anything, she was disappointed. I have a lifetime of fishing experience and have fished since I was her age, so I can usually (not always) catch at least something, but it isn't always easy. The one thing I have learned when taking kids fishing, at any age, is that they are fishing and not you. It is all about baiting their hooks, untangling their line tangles, sometimes casting for them, showing them the ropes, and if you get a moment to make a cast yourself you are doing good. I want her to love fishing too, trips like that one yesterday don't make little kids like fishing.

On a different note, the trip Friday gained me many insect bites of unknown type, all around my sock line, like chigger bites or something that turned into itchy welts. Not pleased with that, I used deet but it wasn't enough.

cool, hope you catch a limit!

Yeah, Paul, I did get out and I did find a good fishing spot with biting fish on Friday. Caught about 20 'gills and my buddy caught a 20 1/2 inch channel catfish, plus there were a bunch of smaller bass we put back. Made for a really fine meal the next day.

I hope to get out this weekend and find any fish at all. I don't care what kind, if they are small 'gills I'll make some soup. Going with a buddy I hope, shore fishing at a State Park on a holiday weekend might be a trick to find a spot with fish that does not already have fishermen.

Yesterday I went out for catfish at my local lake. I fished all night and caught one bass, one giant snapping turtle, and one catfish. It was great to get out though, watch the fireflies wink out and the woods get still (I fish from shore in a wooded area), then listen to the sounds of the woods waking up, all the birds starting to sing and the light creep in at 5am, and the sunrise at 6am over the lake of course was magnificent. It would only have been better had the catfish cooperated; this is the right time of the year for them to bite in that spot, but the weather here in Michigan was strange this spring so things might be off by a week or two.

This has been a rough spring for me, with illness, car trouble, illness again, car trouble again, and other obligations all conspiring to get in the way of taking a trip fishing. I finally made it out to the creek this morning to catch bait for a catfish trip sometime soon this month. If I can recover from the sinusitis that is, just the trip to the creek was pretty exhausting today (I am on antibiotics).

I use a food saver vacuum sealer system to preserve creek chubs to use as cut bait, stored in the freezer. Thawed when I want to use them, each fish makes 3 pieces of cut bait, so today's haul of 21 chubs is quite a bit of bait, enough for a trip or three to the lake.

I'll be working in the garden later on when it cools down this evening. I am busting sod and peeling it up to make the garden patch larger. Very tough work without sod breaking tools, other than a shovel... But I am finding a lot of worms and grubs to use for fishing. Those white lawn grubs that are a favorite of moles are also enjoyed quite a bit by fish.

Trout and Walleye season opened Saturday in Michigan inland waters. That is significant for me because it opens up the previously closed Trout Streams so I can fish for creek chubs to use as catfish bait. I have to buy a trout license here to fish those creeks just so I can catch bait, I don't even fish for trout.

I made it outdoors yesterday for an hour hike in the nearby State Park. I was hiking around the lake but it was tough going, we have gotten a lot of rain and it is hilly so there were a lot of standing water spots in the path to avoid and slippery hills to climb or descend. I made it as far as a creek that was very swollen, the path continued on the other side but the manmade bridge (built in '88) rotted away and was removed, I suspect in the summer that creek is passable because it isn't huge but it wasn't passable yesterday, I had to turn around.

I did get to do some scouting for potential fishing spots, if it ever warms up. It has been unseasonably cold this April here.

I also proved to myself that I am not in good enough shape to be doing hikes like that very often, I have some work to do... emoticon

Wow, super huge difference (bad) between a Cabela's new-style satellite store and one of the original flagship stores. What a waste of time.

Last year I had line left over from the previous year so I didn't need to purchase any to respool. Now all I have are bits and pieces for leaders left, I need to buy some serious line emoticon . Prices have gone up, I respool three rods with 20 pound mono, two with 8 pound, and three with 12 pound. I almost always used Stren in the past but I priced that, for as much as I need, gee whiz. I might go with the Cabela's brand made in India this year because that is on sale.

I do remember as a kid we'd never respool, and oh the rat's nests, short casts, and break-offs whenever we hooked something bigger, but did we learn? It took many years to get it, new line every year on every reel I intend to use, makes a world of difference.

I just bought my license the other day, heading to Cabela's this weekend to look for some fishing line to respool my many reels. I'm looking forward to the end of our rainy period here in Michigan and the May and June fishing period is the best of the year here.

Get your fishing license and get out on a Saturday morning and go for it, it is starting to get fishing weather here our season opens up on May 1st for the popular fish in our area.
I live just north of Seattle and of course Salmon is our prize fish here.

Get out there and make your dreams come true, I have caught three blue catfish on a Saturday morning before so it can be done.
Best wishes on catching your limit this year. Sandy

Since I am a fisherman who does not ice fish, and not a hunter, my interest in the outdoors goes way down in the winter months. I also get sick a lot in the winter it seems like, but I still have my dreams about catching limits of big catfish. Strange how the mind works. It is starting to warm up here and I am starting to thaw out. I hope hibernation is over for the season for me.

I need to hunt harder this year. My Dad has been slowing down and I have along with him. I miss the treks into the woods and stuff. Does not seem right to walk 100 yards or less into the woods and wait for them to come to you. I do not like sitting in blinds. I prefer to be walking.

Hey we are having a heat wave it got up to 50 today and more of the same for the weekend the rain is leaving at least for the weekend.
Day before yesterday we were under a winter storm warning, we got snow only a small amount here but three feet at 3000 feet, wild weather for the end of the month.

My wife does not cook with beef. Even when she makes dishes for pot luck dinners or charity (one someone is ill or had baby etc) she uses venison.

Last night she made me cabbage, carrots and sausage (boiled). In hers she adds tomatoes and peppers but I don't care for whole tomatoes and peppers. I thought it was good but had to skip half the sausage. She put 2.5 links in mine and that was 750 calories. YIKES!!!!

She usually makes this with Ham but the store had sausage on sale.

I understand. You'd be hard-pressed to find healthier meat than wild game and wild venison. It's great food. I love to hunt so I hunt for both a buck every year and usually get a few doe as well. When my freezer gets full I donate the rest of the meat to the food bank. Everybody wins, including the environment, since deer are over-populated beyond their ecological healthy carrying capacity in my area.

I bagged some rare prime rib and a lot of shrimp.
Overall the night with wife only cost $200. Not bad considering we were at a Casino and dinner alone was $50.

I have not had a super hot run in a long time.

The only thing I hunt is deer. I don't go after big bucks - I am hunting for meat and the younger deer are tastier and tenderer. My Dad is old enough he should not hunt alone - it would be hard for him to drag a deer very far.

Is anyone hunting this weekend? If so, what and where?
I am hunting waterfowl tomorrow in Ohio. The season is almost over. I'll be sad to see it end. BUT, it has been a great season for me. I harvested 4 deer with my bow (one of them a 161 inch Ohio Buck). Plus, I've had some great duck hunts. Good luck out there!

My year is going better than yours!
I just had the flu.

Amazing how hard it is emotionally to lose a dog. I never expected it to be so hard when my beloved Rusty died suddenly. I still miss the boy when I think of him and it has been a couple of years. He loved me too much and I guess I returned the favor.

We put away all the Christmas totes in the garage on the top shelves and I am in the process of putting up new blinds in the foyer room to match the ones in the kitchen nook.
It is just to cold for me to even go outside so I am staying inside and doing some spring cleaning. My game room needs some serious attention it seem I still have autumn decorations in there that need to be put in totes and put in the garage, I will work on that this week.
Since Tazz has been gone I don't seem to be very motivated. Also my backside still hurts a lot from the fall and the knot on my head is there but getting smaller thank goodness.
Still hurt all over so am taking it easy with no WATP dvds for a little while my workouts are mainly with hand weights and resistance bands until I can get my lower body moving better.
Stay warm everyone will chat later. Sandy

My first week of the year has been bitter sweet. I was delivered the ashes of our Tazz the Cocker Spaniel we have loved for sixteen and a half years on Tuesday.
On Thursday after I got home I fell in the driveway on a sheet of ice caused by freezing rain. Friday I spent most of the day at the Urgent Care to be tested and poked all over.
I finished up today by buying a special charm for my bracelet of a dog and one of a cat so I have a special charm now for Tazz and one for our black cat Elvis who misses the dog very much.
I am hoping the new week will bring much better things to my life.
Best wishes to all for a great new week ahead. Sandy

It was very hard to turn down all the candy and fudge and cookies people kept offering. It almost seemed like, if I were a bit paranoid, that some wanted to stop my progress. My willpower was tested to say the least.

My last problem was lack of weight loss due to eating too few calories (earlier in 2012). It took a long time of reading the advice here at Sparkpeople to first convince myself I needed to eat more to lose weight, and second to accomplish resetting my metabolism by following that advice. Now I am back to losing again for a while, I haven't hit that plateau yet.

Have a great weight loss year, and remember to make your activity something you enjoy doing. Happy New Year!

I did pretty well this holiday season, my weigh in today shows that I did not gain a pound or lose a pound, which is a pretty solid victory in my battle. Given all the holiday treats around and hte big dinners, it was a challenge but I did it!

I like our Tigers radio announcers better than the TV ones, I turn off the sound on the TV if I am watching that and turn on the radio feed. I also get the Spring Training games with the internet app that aren't aired otherwise in my area.

I'm looking forward to a relaxing day with my family tomorrow, tonight I like to watch the Midnight Mass on TV even though I am not Catholic. And the Yule Log on TV in the morning during breakfast, Christmas songs on the stereo, it is looking like a good Christmas here for me.

I'm committed to not overeating or gaining any weight this holiday season too, I lost 2 lbs last week!

Merry Christmas to all!

I wrapped my presents up to Christmas tunes on Sunday too, but my music came from iTunes on my computer (an Amazon playlist I bought). Had XM for a while in the car until the subscription ran out, I liked the Coffeehouse channel and baseball games, but it wasn't worth the money to me, I prefer to choose my own songs anyway, and Gameday audio on the computer or iPod touch is cheaper for the ballgames (or just the radio if I am fishing at the lake).

Only doing presents for my nieces this year. Merry Christmas everyone.

Greatest time of the year!!!

Loved XM Radio (got to expensive and replaced with iphone - playing Christmas carols yesterday on ride into work).

Decided not to get my wife anything this year. Nothing pleases her. That weedwhacker I got her for our anniversary was a really nice model.

Well with the snow in the mountains and ski season open it seems more like the Holiday Season has started.
I am wrapping gifts today as the Christmas Carols are turned on the Satellite radio. Love this time of year.
I hope everyone is enjoying the season and take the time for yourself just to relax and enjoy what your doing.
Have a great weekend. Sandy

Wishing you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.

"You're never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream..." C.S. Lewis

“Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” ~Mark Victor Hansen
