I'm pretty much new to posting messages, but this is a team that I have an interest in. Seems like there would be more people on Spark who hunt or fish and would like to talk (brag) about their successes.

It's 2012 but looking back at 2011 I had a decent year fishing. I fish a smallish man-made lake in a State Park in Michigan for Channel Catfish and Bluegill from the shore, so my fishing season is about to begin, once the waters warm up I'll be out about once a week before dawn trying for those catfish in the shallows. They also bite well at dusk, but there is something about beating the crowd to the fishing hole, and cleaning fish in the daylight, being finished by noon.

Last summer I did not find the bluegill beds, didn't do much scouting for 'em though and that is required where I fish. They bedding areas move around every year. I set up 3 rods in bank rod holders for the eater sized channel cats, 25 inches and less for me I'll keep. Use cut creek chubs for bait, our daily limit is 10 fish but I rarely get my limit. Perhaps I'd do better if I had a boat and could move around more, but I'm satisfied with my catches of 5 or 6 per trip.

2011 finally handed me a State Master Angler channel catfish from that lake, which has to be 27 inches or larger to qualify. Send in a picture to the DNR and they will send you a patch. I like the thrill of catching the larger ones but back they go, Catch-Photo-Release for the biggies for me, I believe that will improve the fishery and there are enough small ones for me to eat anyway. 28.5 inches was my best in 2011, and he's still swimming, I caught plenty of smaller ones for the dinner table.

I fish that lake because it is clean, unlike the nearby river where I'd want to limit the number of catfish I ate. If you don't know much about catfish, they are opportunistic feeders, you can catch them on stink baits, but naturally they are carnivores, the top of the fish food chain, their primary diet is other fish. They especially like fresh cut bait with all the oils and blood, or live bait. You will rarely catch a larger fish on stink bait or liver, chances are better if you use fresh cut bait, and the smaller ones will hit that just as frequently, so that is my bait of choice.

My favorite dish to prepare from channel catfish is Catfish Gumbo which I make with homemade fish stock as the base. That takes a bit of preparation though so I only make it about 2 or 3 times a year.

Happy hunting and fishing. Have a great 2012 fishing season everyone.

This is unreal - 60s last week!!! No snow - I am partially colorblind and have a hard time seeing deer who are not moving. This is so bad that I had to get help to find deer that I shot and saw die.

True story - I was helping my daughter find a deer she shot so we made a loop in the brush. Now I knew it did not go far by the blood spray so this was a recovery effort. At the end of the loop I told her " look for anything white on the ground - it has to be here someplace" She replied "Like there and points a couple feet behind me where the STEPPED over the deer head.

Interesting fact - Snow - reverses. I get deer almost 50% of time on snow. I see them like they have flashing lights on them.

Congrats!!!

I had a frustrating year hunting - between my young daughters and my old father - I'm limited. Dad and Rachel both outright cost me a deer. Dad - 2 deer.

Just as well - we have a lot of meet in the freezer from last year. Plus - there is an extended doe season in Eastern PA - if it snows - I'll go out and get a doe or two.

We have a moose in our freezer :) Hubby shot it opening day, very happy it's been 4 yrs since we've gotten a moose! Last night we ate a moose roast for supper very yummy!

We also have 11 partridge in the freezer.

No blueberries this year, we had no rain this summer so the bush is incredibley dry, we usually get a few gallons of berries but there was ZERO this year, everything was dried and shriveled up :(

Our potatoes are all gone too, next year I think we will make our garden bigger.

Hello - I'm new to posting messages. I haven't had any luck this bow season so far, only a couple of misses. Gun season starts in two weeks, so I'm looking forward to that. My husband has 9 deer already in the freezer this year!! He participates in a program with the City parks to thin out the herds, and they're allowed 12.

I look forward to getting to know everyone and see what people are doing out in the woods. Good luck!

Three days chasing deer this week and all we (Dad and I) got was 1 deer. Better than 0! I was with Dad when the deer came out in the field and he shot it. I was standing along side him telling him to shoot it! As if he needed that instruction!

That is great that he is still out there hunting. I suspect he likes spending time with you. One of my fondest memories is the last year my grandpa went deer hunting. He died from lung cancer that following spring. He was a "buck" hunter and went out with me. I shot my first buck that day with him along side me. It took me awhile to convince him to let me dress it out. He didn't think I should have to even watch. I calmly reminded him that he would not always be there and I needed to be able to do it myself (how true those words became). We ended up doing it together. He was such a great man and I miss him.

8 or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you.
9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
10 In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.

Went hunting with my Dad today. He is really old, almost deaf and I questioning his eyesight. Two deer walk out into the field about 50 yards in front of him. Broadside shot from a sitting position - no rush - he missed.

Bummer

Good luck on Saturday with your 75 yard shot! I've never tried blackpowder. I also, have never shot a deer with my bow and although I target practice, I'm a little unsure of my bow hunting abilities. I just don't have the time to put in the woods, like I should. It's hard when both my husband and I like to hunt and he is in the agriculture business, so this time of year he has to work a lot. We have to trade watching the kids on those rare times when he is not working the weekend. I tend to let him go more than me, because I feel bad that he is working while I'm home with the kiddos on the weekend. But hopefully, Saturday will be MY time!

Awesome!

I hope to put some fresh venison in the freezer Saturday. Been archery hunting in my favorite spot and a deer has jogged by everytime about 75 yards out. I got a firing lane out to the fence line for gun season. Well - Saturday is inline blackpower season and my deer buddy is going to get shot if he shows up.

I get a deer out of this blind pretty much every year because the deer run off the mountain to the fields using the fence line. Sad to say - the line is posted and when gun season starts the owner sits on the line ending the deer practice of running the line. Not sure what the idiot is thinking - standing in the middle of a deer run but I have not seen him get a deer in 5 years.

Last year - he stood their until 1pm (not in my line of fire but on the fence line farther up). He crashed his way out at 2pm. A deer must have been waiting for him to leave because about 15 minutes after he walked past my sweet spot - I filled my doe permit.

This spot is a great spot up to opening gun day. We have hunted there for 3 years and have gotten 5 deer including a 11 pointer.

I know of a better spot but it too far for my Dad to go easily - about a mile and half in the woods on State Game Lands known for no deer - there is a creek that runs off higher grounds to the pines near the fields. Deer consistently walk down the creek about 30 minutes before dark. I got a deer there three days in a row. - I do admit it is a bummer gutting and dragging a deer in the dark!

Just shot a caribou on September 30th. Lots of fun!!! I hope to get out duck/goose hunting soon and maybe sneak out to my deer stand with my bow on Saturday. Hopefully, my husband won't have to work and can spend the morning or afternoon with the kids. I can't wait till they can sit quietly and long enough to go with me bow hunting.
