Hey, GrandmaLil2 - I *loved* the Dark Hollow Falls. Gorgeous! Although I truly loved every hike we took, that one was stunning... I posted three blogs with Shenandoah pictures and have decided that I absolutely MUST go back again!

I am new to Spark People and only just found this team. I'm sorry I didn't see your question before you went. I LOVE Shenandoah. I have been there three times in my motorhome. . Last year I did eight waterfalls in eight days There are dozens of different kinds of hikes but they are mostly fairly hilly. The shortest waterfall hike is Dark Hollow Falls (it only 1.6 miles each way). Technically they say 1.6 miles each way, but I am convinced it is 1.6 miles down and 4 miles back up the hill (hee-hee). If anyone decides to go, stop at any Wayside or facility and they sell very inexpensive books on "short hikes' 'hikes to waterfalls' or vistas and peaks. They are only a couple of dollars each and give you good directions.
The Ranger programs are good also. They do a meadow walk that is informative and fun.
The campgrounds are great also. No hookups, but wonderful.

Leaving you hungry for more! It would me too. There are some places I would like to go or have been to that a month would not be enough time to explore it all! I love the mountains so much. But it also gives you something to go back to, or to reward yourself for a goal met, or some other reason to return. I'm sure you'll be back there and maybe many times!

Thanks, Linda. It was just a taste... like having one bite of triple chocolate ganache cake, then saying, "gotta go!" it was a wonderful taste. :D

Oh my gosh, it was stunning! My daughter and I spent three days/two nights at the Skyland Lodge in Shenandoah national park. We logged a load of hiking, including some time on the Appalachian Trail, a hike in the fog (which was very lovely), a waterfall hike...

Any hiking enthusiast would love this park. I did not want to leave and am already dreaming of going back for a longer trip -- possibly backpacking & camping along the trail.

My first blog on the hike is up, with photos. :D www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_

Mid-May is almost here - can't wait to hear about this!! We are retired so a drive up to Washington, DC to do the tourist thing (been wanting to do that anyway - haven't been for probably 25 years!) then come home (Georgia) by way of Shenandoah is very do-able - just need to convince DH!!

When we visited Washington DC a few years ago we did Old Rag trail, in Shenandoah, it was great! I would highly recommend that one for your short list.

I'm usually hiking in the west, too, since I live in Arizona! I'm excited to be visiting this lovely national park next week with my daughter, who lives in DC.

Have you checked out the NPS website? I found this page which takes you to printable hiking trail maps. www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/hiking.htm

I'm not familiar with it (we've done our hiking in the parks in the west) but it looks interesting!!

Have an awesome trip! I've never been there but have read so much about the Appalachian Trail, which runs by there, and I've wanted so much to go to some of those areas and hike. It's on my bucket list. Have a wonderful time!

In mid-May, this Arizona girl is going for a very short two-day stay to Shenandoah. Reservations at the Skyline. I'm sure the lodge will have hiking maps & suggestions; however, I'd love to hear from any Sparkers who have spent time there!
