Deserts when they bloom are awesome!
Re Franconia Notch, I grew up outside of Boston and later spent 23 years in southern NH (left in 1994 to move to Hawaii), the White Mountains were always a favorite place of mine to visit.
I posted a picture taken at Bok Tower Gardens. It's one of two places I have to try to train for a hiking weekend in GA.

Strictly speaking, I was not hiking, but running in the flat high desert in SoCal this morning and it is in a beautiful bloom. What a blessing! The contrast from the other 360 days a year makes this even more precious. Yellow, purple and orange form an unparalleled glory unto nature.

Last weekend did some NH (Franconia Notch) crusty snow hiking. Ran across ice climbers doing thier thing (not for this old bod haha). Very interesting to watch. Included were a group of beginners being tutored.

Last week went to Bok Tower in central FL. The azaleas are in full bloom. The property has many different varieties of flowering plants & trees. My favorite is the azaleas. Some of the camellias were still in bloom. There were other types of flowers-too numerous to mention. One thing, I enjoy seeing there. They have taken clear fish line with airplants attached at equal spacing and have a living wall. This is the time of the year that I feel grateful to live in Florida.

Went for a hike on Sunday at an area that used to be a phosphate mine. There were really pretty yellow wildflowers on vines in bloom along the sunny part of the trail. Unsure of what kind. As I was near water, got to see some Blue Herons, Egrets, and other.

Right now, the Osprey babies can be seen on their nests. On the road away from my subdivision are two power polls with nests. Every year, I enjoy seeing them.

Today I notice a different smell in the air.. it's beginning to smell a bit like spring! Things are beginning to bloom and there is just something about SPRING that smells a bit different. emoticon

What does Spring smell of?
of daisies and lilacs
and freshly mowed grass?

What does Spring smell of?
of warm, breezing winds
And sunshine’s warm rays?

What does Spring smell of?
of lemonade stands
And little clammy hands grabbing at melting quarters?

What does Spring smell of?
of cool, gentle ponds
And roaming ducklings?

What does Spring smell of?
of time not existing?
And day melting into night, night melting into day?

What does Springs smell of?
of chilled iced tea
And smoking barbecue?

What does Spring smell of?
of light laughter
And dancing feet?

What does Spring smell of?
of light, bluish skies
And cotton-y clouds?

What does Spring smell of?
of wet dew on grass?
And rain soaked soil?

What des Spring smell of?
of children giggling, laughing in glee
And running, running, running youth’s endless speed?

What does Spring smell of?
of wishes and wants?
And dreams floating by?
What does Spring smell of?
of beauty and birth
And freedom and fantasies?

I have been out and about around the pond and estuary these days and one can't help but notice that the increase in bird songs and chirps not to mention the actual flutter of wings.
Because of my mother - when I was a little boy she would ask every spring for me to find some pussy willows for her and now when I am out and about I am seeing them.
Spring is definitely whispering it's arrival now.

Yesterday I noticed all the wildflowers and even a garter snake. It was so beautiful, but also a nice reminder that the rattlesnakes and scorpions can also be out. :)

Love or at least an sexual act.
Now that I have your attention -- today as I walk around the pond the ducks were pretending they were rabbits.
I used to own ducks back when -- and I would watch my ducks breed in the backyard pond and so today I observed the same thing, with the mallard ducks.

It is a very nice sunny day not too cool to get outside for a walk - I think I will even go again.

Well yesterday I noticed the deer forefoot by the side of the trail as I slid and hit the ground near there :) (but not a smile for the deer I guess). A lot of people walk their dogs there and I assume that was someone's prize found off the trail.

I notice the sky, clouds, wildlife and the beautiful contrast when the sky is that amazing blue against snow covered peaks... I wish I knew more plants by name and more about them.

I will be trying out some hikes with Meetup groups myself. At 56 I wonder what the demographics will be. Best way to find out is to to it I suppose!

I also did my first back yard bird count last weekend.

Today when I hiked around the pond I was to identify my first Varied Thrush. At first I thought it was an American Robin - but looking through the binoculars I seen the orange striped bars on the wings and over the eye.and a black throat - so to the books I went when I got home - I brought a pen and note book with me to write my observations, and I took a picture too - but that did not turn out so well - but it is clear enough to compare with the book.

I had Dalhouise with me - I dropped his lease on the trail - some times I let him run free at the pond - i had to stop and back track - of all places I had dropped the lease right at the beginning of the trail where I had freed Dalhouise. I thought I had it tucked under my arm -- but it was the empty camera case -- at this place is where I took the camera out of the case to hang around my neck - too many things - hiking pole - binoculars - camera - lease all disrupting my concentration as I look at eagles and other birds.

to top that off it began to rain and then rained harder before I could get back home - but it was a good walk

Have you tried meet-up for birding groups in your area, Marty? Cornell Labs has a great bird ID website too. I think the backyard bird count is this weekend, so they may have more info (and groups gathering) for that! I agree it's great when you can learn from a human vs a book.

I wish I could identify more of what I see.
It seems strange right now in the middle of winter I am borrowing books from the library such as Wild flowers of the Sea Coast and others.
I anticipating spring and trying to learn in tiny steps --
I also been out birding and I am getting better at identifying those I spot now - but it would be so much better if I had a person with me who could teach

I noticed how much easier that walking is than driving. Walk Walk Walk Walk Walk Walk...

We're having a winter storm here in Oregon.. The snow drifting from the sky on another foot of already freshly fallen snow.. a cover of white...quite beautiful.

Been a very long time since we've had a good snow.

It is cold out side - I hope you have lots of bird seed in your bird feeders.
I had a Steller Jay and a House sparrow - a Starling come to my balcony for the first time today.
I had the regular visitors of Juncos - Chickadees - Northern Flickers come - and so I was surprised to see these newbe's.. It is cold -7c and wind chill ----- that is cold for my area.
I went outside to walk the dog and seen several American robins as i stepped out of the condo door into the cold.
Walking around the pond that is very frozen over today with only a small channel open I spotted two Bald Eagles and sever Mallard Ducks.
I walked a little further along the dike and was able to take pictures of the Common Mergansers female and male - Golden-eye ducks - Gulls - Canadian Geese - Crows.

Did I mention that it is cold - I was dressed warmly but my face was cold as I walked in the Arctic wind..

Strange fish sighting for sure, Marty!

I never did make it out yesterday...it was overcast and a sort of drizzly snow all day long! None of it was really sticking here though, but I'm hoping the ski areas managed to hold on to some of it!

Again this day - I spotted several Bald Eagles
- 1 Blue Heron
- Mallard Ducks
- Chickadees
- Canadian Geese
- Gulls
-- NO Hooded mergansers what so ever

-- driving to Vancouver I spotted two Hawks -- not sure what type but definitely a hawk.

-- one other point on the frozen pond I noticed something flipping.. taking a closer look with the binoculars I realized it was a fish about six inches long - silver and darker on the top. I felt sorry for it but nothing I could do - I wonder how it got there... did the eagle drop it - did a gull - or did it jump it self up onto the ice and then slid several feet away from the open water.

Two bald Eagles sitting in a tree - one was a mature and the other immature. My thoughts - is one a male waiting for a female to mature - OR - is one a parent staying with a sick young one.
Most of the eagles have left the area.
Makes one wonder................

.Walking closer to the pond I find it mostly frozen over - but still enough open channels to keep the ducks happy

I could only find two female Hooded Mergansers that were swimming around with the mallard ducks

Looking up again I spotted the Blue Heron at first I thought it was another eagle - but looking through the binoculars it became obvious it was a Heron. It has the same shape as a perched eagle high up in the upper tree branches.

Good morning - I did no hiking this day yet but I woke up early - opened the curtains and enjoyed all the morning pinks and oranges - reds. What a beautiful morning.
Only draw back ins the busy highway in front of our condo - in a couple more months I'll be back at camp waking to the sounds of birds can't wait.

-- Oh most likely - pretty sure about it - almost a certainty -- I will go for a hike / walk later in the day.

emoticon The sky.. the birds, the feeling in the air.. the way my body feels in motion (especially in nature). The lay of the land at Basket Slough wetland wildlife refuge all around a panoramic view of mountains and trees (many white oak) as this area once was an oak savanna. Hills and grasses lay the backdrop for a flood plain where water foul are abundant. Without binoculars especially on an overcast day it's difficult to see them but the longer I'm out I notice the more in-tune I am to seeing things in nature. I did see a lot of coots, canadian geese, & other smaller birds. I'm not a birder and so to an untrained eye they are birds..plentiful fantastically amazingly beautiful birds.

Thanks guys! I do try to take that way home when I can, the arboretum is really pretty all year round, but I usually take a path that doesn't go that way around the pond, so I'll have to try to get by there more often.

Marty, you see lots of eagles don't you? I'm a little envious! We had a golden eagle in our back yard a couple of times, but it's been awhile since I've seen him (or her?). Lots of hawks, a peregrine on occasion, and my beloved quail, mostly are what I see.

that was a great description - I would take that detour more often. Bring your camera.

I went out this morning - when I started it looked like rain then it became sunny and as I returned home became very grey and gloomy. I was out for two hours hiking the spawning channels around the golf course. Many bird sightings including the eagles.

I made my way through the arboretum on my way home on Tuesday...was treated to the most beautiful sight: the sky was filled with pink from the setting sun, which reflected on the pond through cattails and trees, and the geese and ducks were floating quietly on the pond. Then a group of geese flew in and landed on the pond...it was so beautiful. I was really glad I took that detour on my way home, it was well worth a few extra minutes on my commute!

The three hours at Brohm Lake I was not able to see or even hear any birds while we were there until the very last. Very near the car parking lot I heard the chickadees singing - so once again all this time in the deep forests and no birds yet near my home I am delighted with so many.

yesterday walking around the pond two Hooded Mergansers - over 20 Mallard ducks - 1 Great Blue heron sitting in a tree until it flew off while I was trying to take a picture - several Herring Gulls. Not seen but heard chickadees and some other birds I can't identify.

Out walking 90 minutes - through town - the area bordering the estuary - Nexen beach and back through town to the parked car,
Cool but sunny. Seen the same species of geese - ducks - sparrows BUT wait there on a tree stump sticking out of the water is a kingfisher.

I brought my camera from home - but silly me left it on the floor of the front seat...

Seen over 9 mallard ducks - 1 house sparrow - 2 Eastern Towhee - 1 Hooded Merganser when I took Dalhouise out for his morning walk.
Interesting there is more wildlife in my neighborhood surrounded by highways and housing than in the Provincial Park

Tuesday hike - a little disappointed that I was not able to see any wildlife today. No birds on the lakes - nor animals in the woods.
I went for a hike at Alice Lake Provincial Park - it was enjoyable to do so in the sun.
I will be grateful for every day I can go outside without rain falling.
On the lake I noticed that four people were there with fly rods - I think there is a company that uses this area to teach fly fishing..
It looks fun but I really don't have the time or interest to learn...

I am surprised I do not see more wild life here - but as I said on my blog - I do not want to meet a bear or cougar when I am out in the woods away from the safety of the car...

Monday - Monday --
Noni and Dalhouise and I enjoyed a two hour outing. enjoyed some sun - some rain and great scenery..
I took pictures of this eagle feasting on a salmon ( pictures on my blog posting) and was able to zoom close to a Golden eye duck too. Those ducks are so camera shy - I keep trying to get a good shot but as soon as I stop at the pond edge they go hiding.

met two men - not sure for whom they work but they were collecting DNA of dead salmon.
They told me that the pink salmon are at a 4 year high but the coco are low this year so far.

Nice observations, Marty! We have a lot of geese that "hang out" at our local pond and park, dodging the goose poop can be quite a challenge at times, but they are lovely swimming in the pond with the ducks and other water birds.

Normally I head out the door around ten AM - but today I was up a little earlier and so at nine I started getting dress to go out side when my wife asked if I wanted her to come too. Of course - but hurry up and get dressed as I am almost ready now..
WE take a 45 minute walk around the pond - across the river and after a short jaunt on paved sidewalks stepped gingerly down the embankment into more woods after crossing the river on another bridge.
The SUN is shinning - Oh what a blessing to walk in the sun holding my lovers hand,

Stopped to look at more spawning salmon - looked up and counted twenty Canadian Geese in flight honking loudly.

Thank you Kayotic

I should do some posting here.
I blog about many of my things I see.but I am sure many don't read my blogs.
So lately when I have been out on my small hikes / walks I have seen the Salmon in the rivers as they head upstream to spawn and die.
I have seen geese - ducks - gulls - shore birds and my first eagle of this season
I see people fly fishing in the river and many other people out with their dogs on the trail.

When we were out a few nights ago, many deer were out and about... we happened across a small herd of bucks, and as they are apparently used to people on the trail, they just stood and watched us...perhaps 6 feet away at most. All their antlers are "in velvet" now (as my husband says). We also saw a beautiful jackrabbit who was NOT pleased by our presence!

Walking home yesterday I came across a red-tailed hawk sitting in the middle of the trail, I was only about 3 feet from him and he just stood there looking at me. I waited until he flew off, did not really want to challenge him, but also was a bit admiring of his presence.

I just came back from a wonderful retreat in the deep wilderness and did a lot of hiking & what I noticed first was an extraordinary absence of the sounds I've been so accustomed to hearing. Hiking for me unfolds a new heightened awareness of my senses and I begin to let go of the chatter in my own mind.

Last summer I hiked in Acadia National Park in Maine. The climb of Cadillac Mtn is considered to be moderate, so I hiked up the North Face and down the South Face trails. I noticed, much to my surprise, that there were several people wearing flipflops on the trail. This came to my mind when I got my teamgoodie today. How can you be climbing fairly steep granite cliffs and wear flipflops? I almost always wear my hiking boots (even if the trail is flat) because of the rocks and things. The boots really cushion my feet.

This past hike I noticed the beautiful waterfalls, how the water flows, and the shapes of the rocks. Since we all had recently had geology we were noticing all the little things in the rocks that we never would have paid attention to before. In one particular area the moss that covered everything was just beautiful. We also noticed lots of wildlife - 2 copperheads, 2 lizards, a snail with a huge shell, a funky blue and white spider, a big, huge, fuzzy, black caterpillar crossing the road, and a swarm of ants trying to move a 2-inch long caterpillar out of a leaf. We also happened to point out all the various nooks and crannies where critters could live.

Lately I've been seeing (and hearing) a lot of birds, and they are filling up the wetland areas in the park I walk through, lots of ducks, geese and red-winged blackbirds. Yesterday I saw just the tail end of a snake as it was crawling into a hole under a bridge I walk over.

Walked to work in the rain on Tuesday, more a drizzle than a downpour, so it wasn't too bad, but my shoes got so muddy! Today should be nicer, the sky is clear, and it's so fresh out from the rain we've had.

Happiest around water. If the hike is along a river or lake It is a good day. If the hike brings me to a waterfall with magnificent sculptured mountains it is not a good day but a GREAT day!

We just got back from traveling up the west side of the sierra nevada's and coming back down the east side of the sierra nevada's. On our hikes, I was enjoying everything. The sounds of the rivers & falls, the beautiful birds, everything that was in bloom (bumble bees and all) and even the snowy covered mountains!

Thanks SEASPIRIT1. Your area sounds really nice. I always love to read blogs with pics about other people's hikes and see what different areas are like.

Lindakay228 ~ your photos remind me of an area in the Okanagan that we used to go hiking through when I was younger! Nice pics!!! (thanks for sharing!)
Kayotic ~ the wildflowers are drawing my attention too! I snapped a picture of what I think is a wild viola....but it may be ginger (hmmm) will upload it later and share!
Maybe we should start a thread of photos from our hikes!! (Think I'll do that later too!!) LOL....later is my mantra right now (I'm procrastinating about working on some research for my Masters).
We just went and enjoyed a wonderful "discovery" that has been in our community for years! We walked along the Elk River Timber trail ~ which has so many small trails leading off of it (we had only ever explored the smallest part of it ~ the closest section to town) Now we're determined to explore ALL of the trails on it! A great hour of exploring this afternoon!

This time of year the wildflowers are drawing my attention. Today, I saw a deer crossing the path, and the views from the lookouts, or tops of peaks and ridges are wonderful. I also love the blue, blue of the sky, the clouds when they form, the sounds of the birds in the trees.

I just posted a blog about my hike yesterday if anyone is interested in seeing what it's like where I hike. I really have a bug to go camping too and need to do something about that LOL.

I also thought maybe it would give an idea of what types of things I notice. Going out again today.

Motivated@last...it's funny how one person can see one thing, and the next person totally see different things while we're out hiking! We always have a "did you see" session when we are heading back into town from our hike!
Lindakay228 ~ I love looking at the rock formations as we hike as well! Our island has lots of different types of rocks and natural features so there is always something new! Today we were hiking down by the Englishman River and through the forest (in one section) there were all of these mossy "bumps" where the rocks were completely covered in thick dense moss....it looked like a mini moss village!

I look at different things, depending on where I'm hiking. I'm usually hiking alone and often in the forest areas near my home. I see the trees and little flowers (although those are usually late summer after our summer monsoons). We have a lot of huge boulders scattered on the mountains from thousands of years ago when there was an active volcano near here and they fascinate me. Today I hiked alone a little creek, and the gurgling water is one of my favorite sounds. I was wishing so much I was camping out there. I also of course and watching a lot for rocks and tree roots on the trails because our trails have a lot of both LOL! I got a picture of an orange butterfly today. I hear the birds. I enjoy the peace so much. And all the lovely beauty in nature!

For me, I'm normally looking at the shape of the hills and mountains, the gullies that have formed, the harder rock that remains while the softer rock has weathered away.

Sometimes I hike with other people who notice the lichen on the trees, or an unusual bug on the ground, and I am "I totally did not see that".

Today we hiked along a trail that follows a river up to a waterfall. It was the sound of the river as we wove along through the trail beside it that I noticed today!
The water was running high and fast and not much else could be heard above it!
