I've been seeing a lot of baby quail lately, on the trail, in the yard, even running across the road! they are so cute.

Yesterday morning we took the same trail back that we had taken a week ago in the late afternoon. It was amazing how many more birds we heard in the morning, whereas we barely heard any on our previous hike. It was lovely!

DH, the dog and I were on the trail 2 days ago at a local river and saw two wild turkeys. I think the dog was stunned, she didn't move a hair. lol.

Great outings, hikers!

We did a mountain bike up Relay peak (view of Lake Tahoe, and beautiful wildflowers in bloom) on Sunday...

Today is my "walk to work" day on the trails behind the house. Had a beautiful sunset last night, and a pretty sunrise this morning....

My husband, youngest son (10 yrs) and mysefl went hiking on Saturday to North Mountain. It was a smaller hike, only 1.7 miles and took about an hour. We woke up at 4:30 to go hike Camelback Mountain. Did research before, website made it sound like dogs were allowed. We got there and they had no dog signs allowed. We couldn't leave the pooch in the car (plus we love taking her and she loves hiking) so we tried Pieskewa. It was packed. My hsuband remembered hiking North Mountain when he was younger so we went there. Went for a little ways on the dirt and rocks and I was finally starting to relax (crazy stressful couple of weeks). Then it hit an asphalt trail and my heart dropped. It was steep and a good workout. I realized one of the big reasons I love hiking is I can pretend I don't live in the city. I just kept repeating my new saying "I'm doing what I need to do to do what I want to do (which is hike Havasupai in the fall)" We got to the top and there was a trail off to the side. AND IT WAS ALL DIRT AND ROCKS!!!! I was in heaven again. I could have done the trail again I think but because of driving around we didn't start the hike until 6:30 and by 7:30 it was already getting a little too warm for the black lab. Plus my hubby had a 50 mile bike ride to get ready for. Such an awesome guy to come hiking with me that early also. So what I found was one of the reasons I love hiking so much. We're hoping by retirement we'll be able to get out in the country again (well again for me - he grew up in the city)

Keep Smiling
Debbie

I had an amazing time hiking this weekend. I hiked around Lincoln Park on Saturday in Chicago and went to the zoo, went to North Avenue beach and out to the pier. There were so many things to see - all the animals, the beautiful gardens, and the people on the beach having a great time (great motivation).

Oh Boy - Kayotic - is it ever summer! Definitely feeling it here too!

Took the kids to Paris Mountain State Park yesterday - did around 3.5 miles with my 4-year-old son running the last mile. Ha!

We saw a few beautiful flowers and one of the most interesting mushrooms I've ever seen. As well as getting to meet an exceptionally friendly and slobbery pooch!

What a lovely topic idea!

I don't get out to hike as much as I'd like, but each evening I walk about 1.2 miles to close a horse barn - I feed and water and generally make sure everyone is tucked in for the night.

But there's so much to see, smell and hear while I'm out - sunsets - last night two owls were "talking" to each other, foxes screaming (not my favorite) quite a lot of Chuck-Wills-Widows, and then there are all the lovely horsey sounds and smells.

Best part was two days ago eating the first blackberries of the season - there are so many blackberry plants!

Last week we were able to get out of the heat and go to Flagstaff and hike Kendrick's Peak. It was one rough hike for me. But the view from the top - so worth it. You could just sea a mountain of pine trees. Then we laid down with our packs as our pillows for a little while before heading down. The clouds were those white wispy ones that just seem to stretch and flow on by. So relaxing. We also saw a horned toad - the first for a few of my kids. Saw a few birds - but mostly just peace and quiet and beautiful forest scenery. Loved it!

I guess our coyotes don't put much of a dent in the rabbit population around here...not that I can tell anyway.

Not much to see on my hike today, but I did hear an angry crow, couldn't see him, but he was making quite a ruckus in a tree as walked by!

The coyote population has increased this year so we are seeing less 'bunnies' out and about...but I've seen quite a number of desert chipmunks this year, more this year than in previous years as well as quail. Enjoy your outdoor vacation :)

Back some years ago..2005, they had a huge wildfire right here on the preserve..it was called the Hackberry Fire..right up by Mid Hills.
65,200 acres in all caught fire believe to have been started by lightning...all of the Junipers, Joshua trees, Yucca trees..all gone burned up.
We have driven up there often and this past Friday we did some hiking up there. It's nice to see all of the 'green' coming back...their is still quite an extensive 'burn' area and charred remains of what used to be Joshua trees etc, but around the campgrounds (Mid Hills) the thick brush and desert surroundings are coming back alive with new 'baby' trees coming through the soil..

We enjoyed eating lunch there on Friday after our 'mini mountain' adventures and sat under some large Pinyon Pines within the campgrounds.

TRAILTRODDER..that does sound beautiful.
I always love the desert storms we get out this way...I'm always in awe watching the 'lightning' shows. We usually start getting them right around this time of the year..and/or late Aug./Sept.
You can tell when it's about to happen as the humidity starts to rise and you can smell the rains heading in this direction.

On Friday I went 'rock climbing'..I call it a 'mini mountain', lol
All I can say is WOW!! The view from the top was amazing and it was particularly nice as once we got to the top there was a breeze that just felt sooo good.
I was standing there at the top of this 'mini mountain' with my hands out and just trying to take it all in...
Yesterday I hiked up to an old spring reservoir..once again I timed it just perfect so that the sun was rising over Providence Mountains. It's just an amazing thing to watch the sun rising in the morning out here.
I always enjoy the hike back home as it is mostly downhill, lol...

it's wildflower season - we've been counting wildflowers on all of our hikes lately, as many as 39 a few days ago! saw one baby snake at the edge of the road, possibly a rattlesnake but more likely a bull snake. didn't like it either way...

I almost stepping on a snake the other day...the first one I saw was a garter snake, but this one surprised me, I just stepped right over it, lucky I didn't step on it! And it was gone so fast I did not get a good look to ID the thing! We do have Great Basin rattlesnakes around here, so I try to be careful too, this one was probably a garter snake though.

Where I live..it is truly magnificent, the surroundings, well..it's breathtaking. Watching the sun come up over Providence Mountains as I'm walking at 5am is truly an amazing sight..and to sit in my back yard in the evening..the sun is going down being the Kelso mountains which completely illuminates the Providence mountains and turns them an orange rusty color (a lot of iron ore in those mountains)
Rabbits, tortoise, roadrunners, eagles, hawks, vultures, big horn sheep...the list goes on..

Living out in the desert boonies though, especially this far out..we have to stay visually aware of our surroundings at all times..whether we are hiking or not.

In 2010, my youngest son, now 18 years old and graduating high school this coming Friday, ventured out into our backyard and was bitten by a Mojave Sidewinder (he was bitten on his left hand)...they flew in Mercy Air (it took 2 hours for the helicopter to get here..it took 90+ minutes for the ambulance to come) and he was transported to UMC (Las Vegas)..He spent 4 days in ICU, receiving 11 viles of anti-venom.
He was very lucky...there are only 3 area hospitals that have anti-venom, UMC, Las Vegas (very limited quantities, if any), Loma Linda, CA and there is another hospital in AZ.

(is it any wonder why at age 42, I have 90% grey hair??)

When I hike, I'm constantly looking around at the ground below as the little buggers blend so very well into the dirt..I've seen many tracks during these past three or so week but thankfully (touch wood) I haven't come across any myself.

My husband has seen a few of them out and about the tracks (he is the track foreman out here for UPRR) and our neighbor found one inside his shed last week.

It just a way of life out here... :)

I'm beginning to look up towards the sky and into the trees more. Usually when I hike, I look around at eye level or down. My wife is a really good birder and I find myself looking up and saying "where" whenever she sights a bird. It's also giving me more photo opportunities. She's helping me become a better docent that's for sure.

The regional park I walk through on the way home has flooded the wet land areas, and the ducks are in duck heaven! Saw a few swimming away in there...and almost had a little bird land on me on the way home, I think it might have been a swift, may need to check the bird site for a good ID.

Did my hiking adventure in Dawsonville, GA. It was a great time of the year to hike. I loved seeing the Dogwoods and wild Azaleas. The trails had many violets and wild lilies. The trees had started putting their leaves around.
I loved hiking where I could see mountains.
Hike was very strenuous for me. My pack weighed 25#. Besides figuring how to lighten pack, I need to change the connection for my hydrobladder. It was too low & put more weight at the bottom of my pack.
The hike up to Len Foote Inn in Amicalola State Park was 5 miles. By GA standards, it was moderate. By FL standards, it was very strenuous. It took my four and a half hours to go up. Ended up doing more walking than hiking the second, day. The third day we hiked out. It was 5.3 miles by a different route. That hike took almost 5 and half hours. It was a challenging weekend but I am so glad I went.

My fiancé and I hiked at Clifty Falls State Park in Indiana on Saturday. I really enjoyed the wild flowers. Around one corner we came upon a snake laying across the trail. I hate snakes! I also enjoyed the falls and the sound of the water. We hiked 9 miles and two of those miles were up the creek bed to the falls. Beautiful day!

Deserts when they bloom are awesome!
Re Franconia Notch, I grew up outside of Boston and later spent 23 years in southern NH (left in 1994 to move to Hawaii), the White Mountains were always a favorite place of mine to visit.
I posted a picture taken at Bok Tower Gardens. It's one of two places I have to try to train for a hiking weekend in GA.

Strictly speaking, I was not hiking, but running in the flat high desert in SoCal this morning and it is in a beautiful bloom. What a blessing! The contrast from the other 360 days a year makes this even more precious. Yellow, purple and orange form an unparalleled glory unto nature.

Last weekend did some NH (Franconia Notch) crusty snow hiking. Ran across ice climbers doing thier thing (not for this old bod haha). Very interesting to watch. Included were a group of beginners being tutored.

Last week went to Bok Tower in central FL. The azaleas are in full bloom. The property has many different varieties of flowering plants & trees. My favorite is the azaleas. Some of the camellias were still in bloom. There were other types of flowers-too numerous to mention. One thing, I enjoy seeing there. They have taken clear fish line with airplants attached at equal spacing and have a living wall. This is the time of the year that I feel grateful to live in Florida.

Went for a hike on Sunday at an area that used to be a phosphate mine. There were really pretty yellow wildflowers on vines in bloom along the sunny part of the trail. Unsure of what kind. As I was near water, got to see some Blue Herons, Egrets, and other.

Right now, the Osprey babies can be seen on their nests. On the road away from my subdivision are two power polls with nests. Every year, I enjoy seeing them.

Today I notice a different smell in the air.. it's beginning to smell a bit like spring! Things are beginning to bloom and there is just something about SPRING that smells a bit different. emoticon

What does Spring smell of?
of daisies and lilacs
and freshly mowed grass?

What does Spring smell of?
of warm, breezing winds
And sunshine’s warm rays?

What does Spring smell of?
of lemonade stands
And little clammy hands grabbing at melting quarters?

What does Spring smell of?
of cool, gentle ponds
And roaming ducklings?

What does Spring smell of?
of time not existing?
And day melting into night, night melting into day?

What does Springs smell of?
of chilled iced tea
And smoking barbecue?

What does Spring smell of?
of light laughter
And dancing feet?

What does Spring smell of?
of light, bluish skies
And cotton-y clouds?

What does Spring smell of?
of wet dew on grass?
And rain soaked soil?

What des Spring smell of?
of children giggling, laughing in glee
And running, running, running youth’s endless speed?

What does Spring smell of?
of wishes and wants?
And dreams floating by?
What does Spring smell of?
of beauty and birth
And freedom and fantasies?

I have been out and about around the pond and estuary these days and one can't help but notice that the increase in bird songs and chirps not to mention the actual flutter of wings.
Because of my mother - when I was a little boy she would ask every spring for me to find some pussy willows for her and now when I am out and about I am seeing them.
Spring is definitely whispering it's arrival now.

Yesterday I noticed all the wildflowers and even a garter snake. It was so beautiful, but also a nice reminder that the rattlesnakes and scorpions can also be out. :)

Love or at least an sexual act.
Now that I have your attention -- today as I walk around the pond the ducks were pretending they were rabbits.
I used to own ducks back when -- and I would watch my ducks breed in the backyard pond and so today I observed the same thing, with the mallard ducks.

It is a very nice sunny day not too cool to get outside for a walk - I think I will even go again.

Well yesterday I noticed the deer forefoot by the side of the trail as I slid and hit the ground near there :) (but not a smile for the deer I guess). A lot of people walk their dogs there and I assume that was someone's prize found off the trail.

I notice the sky, clouds, wildlife and the beautiful contrast when the sky is that amazing blue against snow covered peaks... I wish I knew more plants by name and more about them.

I will be trying out some hikes with Meetup groups myself. At 56 I wonder what the demographics will be. Best way to find out is to to it I suppose!

I also did my first back yard bird count last weekend.

Today when I hiked around the pond I was to identify my first Varied Thrush. At first I thought it was an American Robin - but looking through the binoculars I seen the orange striped bars on the wings and over the eye.and a black throat - so to the books I went when I got home - I brought a pen and note book with me to write my observations, and I took a picture too - but that did not turn out so well - but it is clear enough to compare with the book.

I had Dalhouise with me - I dropped his lease on the trail - some times I let him run free at the pond - i had to stop and back track - of all places I had dropped the lease right at the beginning of the trail where I had freed Dalhouise. I thought I had it tucked under my arm -- but it was the empty camera case -- at this place is where I took the camera out of the case to hang around my neck - too many things - hiking pole - binoculars - camera - lease all disrupting my concentration as I look at eagles and other birds.

to top that off it began to rain and then rained harder before I could get back home - but it was a good walk

Have you tried meet-up for birding groups in your area, Marty? Cornell Labs has a great bird ID website too. I think the backyard bird count is this weekend, so they may have more info (and groups gathering) for that! I agree it's great when you can learn from a human vs a book.

I wish I could identify more of what I see.
It seems strange right now in the middle of winter I am borrowing books from the library such as Wild flowers of the Sea Coast and others.
I anticipating spring and trying to learn in tiny steps --
I also been out birding and I am getting better at identifying those I spot now - but it would be so much better if I had a person with me who could teach

I noticed how much easier that walking is than driving. Walk Walk Walk Walk Walk Walk...

We're having a winter storm here in Oregon.. The snow drifting from the sky on another foot of already freshly fallen snow.. a cover of white...quite beautiful.

Been a very long time since we've had a good snow.

It is cold out side - I hope you have lots of bird seed in your bird feeders.
I had a Steller Jay and a House sparrow - a Starling come to my balcony for the first time today.
I had the regular visitors of Juncos - Chickadees - Northern Flickers come - and so I was surprised to see these newbe's.. It is cold -7c and wind chill ----- that is cold for my area.
I went outside to walk the dog and seen several American robins as i stepped out of the condo door into the cold.
Walking around the pond that is very frozen over today with only a small channel open I spotted two Bald Eagles and sever Mallard Ducks.
I walked a little further along the dike and was able to take pictures of the Common Mergansers female and male - Golden-eye ducks - Gulls - Canadian Geese - Crows.

Did I mention that it is cold - I was dressed warmly but my face was cold as I walked in the Arctic wind..

Strange fish sighting for sure, Marty!

I never did make it out yesterday...it was overcast and a sort of drizzly snow all day long! None of it was really sticking here though, but I'm hoping the ski areas managed to hold on to some of it!

Again this day - I spotted several Bald Eagles
- 1 Blue Heron
- Mallard Ducks
- Chickadees
- Canadian Geese
- Gulls
-- NO Hooded mergansers what so ever

-- driving to Vancouver I spotted two Hawks -- not sure what type but definitely a hawk.

-- one other point on the frozen pond I noticed something flipping.. taking a closer look with the binoculars I realized it was a fish about six inches long - silver and darker on the top. I felt sorry for it but nothing I could do - I wonder how it got there... did the eagle drop it - did a gull - or did it jump it self up onto the ice and then slid several feet away from the open water.

Two bald Eagles sitting in a tree - one was a mature and the other immature. My thoughts - is one a male waiting for a female to mature - OR - is one a parent staying with a sick young one.
Most of the eagles have left the area.
Makes one wonder................

.Walking closer to the pond I find it mostly frozen over - but still enough open channels to keep the ducks happy

I could only find two female Hooded Mergansers that were swimming around with the mallard ducks

Looking up again I spotted the Blue Heron at first I thought it was another eagle - but looking through the binoculars it became obvious it was a Heron. It has the same shape as a perched eagle high up in the upper tree branches.

Good morning - I did no hiking this day yet but I woke up early - opened the curtains and enjoyed all the morning pinks and oranges - reds. What a beautiful morning.
Only draw back ins the busy highway in front of our condo - in a couple more months I'll be back at camp waking to the sounds of birds can't wait.

-- Oh most likely - pretty sure about it - almost a certainty -- I will go for a hike / walk later in the day.

emoticon The sky.. the birds, the feeling in the air.. the way my body feels in motion (especially in nature). The lay of the land at Basket Slough wetland wildlife refuge all around a panoramic view of mountains and trees (many white oak) as this area once was an oak savanna. Hills and grasses lay the backdrop for a flood plain where water foul are abundant. Without binoculars especially on an overcast day it's difficult to see them but the longer I'm out I notice the more in-tune I am to seeing things in nature. I did see a lot of coots, canadian geese, & other smaller birds. I'm not a birder and so to an untrained eye they are birds..plentiful fantastically amazingly beautiful birds.
