My dog isn't so much about going forward and coming back. If he could, he'd just keep going forward. But he gets a ton of side to side movement trying to sniff everything on both and every side of the road, rock, tree, etc. so I'm sure he's taking a lot more steps than he needs to!

So glad you got to meet up with some other sparkers for the hike! I love it when I get to do things with someone I met here. There aren't many around me and so it doesn't happen often as I live in rural New Mexico but I've met a few amazing people. Lyndaloves2hike has come out from California twice over the summer and we've had some good times hiking and also camping. It's amazing the people I meet here!
I used to take my dog with me and she loved it but she's 10 years old now and has slowed down so much I don't do it because it's just too hard on her. She will happily go but then be so worn out afterwards. I miss taking her along with me. She always loved to sniff out everything and because she runs ahead of me and then back to me she puts on about twice as many miles as I do. I also have a lot of forest area right outside of town where I could let her off leash and lots and lots of areas to explore.

I've always thought the dogs that hike must go twice as far as the people they hike with, since they go back and forth so much... emoticon

Sounds like fun! My dogs both love to go new places so they can smell all the new smells and I like to see new things so it's a win-win when we explore somewhere we haven't been before.

Easy 2 mile hike in the park near Portland, OR. 3 other Sparkers from the Spark Portland group and I (and my dog!) met up and headed into Forest Park. We are so lucky in this area to have a huge, forested natural area right outside town, great place to hike and lots of trails. It was an easy 2 miler, but I still had fun and I met 3 new interesting people whom I have no other thing in common with other than we live near Portland and we are Sparkers!

My dog is almost 7, but he usually goes with me on my walks. He's walked as much as 8 miles with me-he's huffin' when he does it, but he makes it!-and he can do our normal 5 mile loop without breaking a sweat, but this 2 miles was new to him and it wore him out! It wasn't particularly steep or challenging, but I think all the new smells and strange people around him was just a whole lot more stimulation than he's used to!
