we hiked another segment of the country road along the chewuch river outside winthrop - it's a 30 mile road and we've been covering it in sections. we have about 9 miles left that we hope to cover before the snows come. 7 miles round trip today!

Yes the fall colors are just beginning to show through. It will be a few more weeks before they hit their prime color.

Sunday's hike was great and I was only a little sore yesterday. It resolved today which is great! Last week my calf muscles were crabby until Friday or Saturday

Tomorrow I'll be hiking in a different section of the same area I hiked today - Limestone Canyon - with a group doing a butterfly survey. It's really the very end of the season so I don't know if we'll see many but I did see a few on my hike today so I'm hopeful ;-)

Today, I hiked at Chimney Rocks park. Tomorrow morning, depending on the weather, I'm going to hike the 6-10 Hiking trail of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. This is a new one for me that I found out about last week. I'm pretty excited. I hope it doesn't rain. Sunday, I'm doing a 5k trail walk at Rails to Trails in Alexandria, PA for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

I am doing local hikes as much as possbile now that I can hike again. I do not have any big hikes planned, but want to build up my endurance and stamina so that I can plan those big destinations. Today, I hiked Hahawha Environmental Appreciation Area in Westminster, MD. On Monday I am hiking Oregon Ridge which is in Cockeysville, MD. Both areas are near Baltimore, MD.

I'm doing local hikes several days a week and for now don't have any 'big destinations' in mind, although we're going to Kauai in early November and I'll want to hike there. In the meantime, I've made a commitment to coordinate group hikes on Monday and Thursday nights and I have already been going to one on Wednesday night on the same paved road in a wilderness area - so that means 3x a week I will be hiking/walking this 3.2 mile route with 800' gain - some of the Monday nights, we do yoga at the top of the hill so that adds to the experience [even though I may be the stiffest most inflexible person the instructor has ever encountered!!] - The rest of the time, I have a variety of local hikes on trails each week so I'll be pretty busy with shorter hikes for the next couple of months.

I'm just discovering how much I love to hike. I live an hour away from some of the most beautiful country in the world, the Canadian Rockies. So I am going to try to get a hike in every weekend until the snow hits. Last weekend I did a near impossible hike to Rawson Lake in Kanaskis. I had to stop a lot, because it was 2.7 km of straight uphill on the 3.9 km to the lake, but I made it. This weekend it's Johnson's Canyon, Banff National Park which is only a 4.7km round trip hike, but I've never been and this time we're taking the kids.

What exciting adventures you're all having - I've wanted to do the JMT but not sure if I'll ever get that into my 'bucket' and 'off the list' at this point in my life - congrats to JSTETSER for getting so close to finishing the list. As a long-time peak-bagger, I know what you've gone thru and how exciting it is to get to that point!

We're in Brian Head, Utah [9600' elevation] and hiked around Cedar Breaks National Monument a little bit today, over 10,000' elevation - what a beautiful place! Unfortunately, we had a massive downpour in the afternoon - not just thunder and lightning but also BUCKETS of water and it's been like that off and on since then. It's after 9pm and pouring again.

We hope to get to Brian Head Peak, which is 11,307 feet elevation. We can drive up and might do that considering the weather but will do as much hiking as we can in the Dixie National Forest area tomorrow.

Yeah...I'm really jazzed! Next year we will be doing that part of the trail. Half this year and half next year.

What a great adventure, Swan47! I've been on some parts of the JMT, but never did the whole thing. We did a backpack from Shepherd's pass to Mt Whitney a few years ago, that's the tail end of the trail.

Hi all - fairly new to this team. I'm leaving next Wednesday to hike half of the John Muir Trail. I'm very excited! The total mileage is around 130 and our permit is for 2 weeks. Can't wait! Has anyone done this? We plan on doing the second half next summer.
