My friend Jana refers to this idea as "the way we project our home movies onto other people." A powerful image I always try to remember. -ST

What a sweet story and so true, Lisa...

Lilac, funny how that works, eh?

Mary, I live/love to do that when I'm out shopping... it was my hubby who taught me to do it, changing people's perceptions one at a time!

I heard a similar story long ago. There was a house for sale in a small town and a family from the city went to look at it. They saw an old man sitting on the porch next door to the house so they walked up to talk to him. The old man asked them where they were from and why they were looking at moving. The couple said that they hated their neighborhood, people were unfriendly, the city was corrupt and filled with crime. They wanted to get away from it. Then they asked the old man what the little town and its people were like and he said, "Well, about the same as where you came from, I guess. I don't think you'll like it here." They hung their heads and walked away. Then a second couple came to look at the house. They also saw the old man and went to talk to him. The old man asked them where they came from and what the people were like and they said, "Oh, we're from the city and we just loved it! We had the most wonderful neighbors and friends, and the schools were so great. But my husband has a new job and we need to move closer for him." Then they asked the old man what the little town and its people were like and he said, "Well, about the same as where you come from, I guess. I think you'll love it here."

I always liked that story. Goes with the saying "Wherever you go, there you are!"

That's a keeper, Lisa. Thank-you!

If you smile, the world smiles back at you.

I remember once being in the check-out line at a Walmart and the woman clearly did not like her job and was a bit gruff and curt to everyone. When I was up next, I gave her a big smile and asked her how her day was going. Her face lit up and she melted like butter. It made me feel good inside.

Thanks Lisa. I read that one to my son. He thought it was cute.

Wherever you are, be there totally. If you find your here and now intolerable and it makes you unhappy, you have three options: remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it totally.

The House of 1000 Mirrors

Long ago in a small, far away village, there was a place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, "This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit it often."

In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, "That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again."

All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in the faces of the people you meet?
