1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

It just seemed like the right time for me to get started. I am thankful for my health, and I want to look good as I get older - not just get older!

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

I like it usually. I get self-conscious if men look too long though.

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Being consistent! I am OK with the eating changes because I have been careful not to change anything that I can't "live with". But the working out was going well until I hurt my foot and had to come up with alternate cardio. No jogging, no elliptical. Now it's become a chore again.

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far?

How much I enjoyed jogging. I hadn't done it since just after getting married, but even then, it was a chore, but this time, I truly enjoyed it!

5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

That's an easy question. WISE Onion and Garlic potato chips. I haven't had any since October because I know I will eat the entire bag, wqhich is over 700 calories if I remember correctly.

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

Organic Brown Basmati Rice. And apples. Well, I always loved apples, but now I eat one almost every day.

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

Shopping. Lots of shopping. I have already started because nothing fits, but I am still losing, so I have to be reasonable, right?

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Jogging, aerobics classes - none of which I can do right now.

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

I love entertaining in my home. I love to cook and bake. I make specialty cakes. There are some pics in my gallery.

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

My husband is wonderful. He also joined SP, and he will eat whatever I put in front of him. If I try something new, he will too. I just bought some tofu to try it out...

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

I just bought the book and downloaded the audio to my ipod, so I don't know yet. I'm just starting out.

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

I had just watched The Secret and I just felt different--I felt empowered! The next day I saw a little blurb about the sparkies on yahoo page. It just clicked in my head and in my body that this could be it. So here I start the journey...

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

I like it a lot, specially when my hubby notices it. It motivates me to keep going.

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

It hasn't even been a week yet since I started so I'm still gong-ho about the diet. I just feel extra energy this time and I'm not so cranky this time. ;)

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far?

How nice I am to people who live with me during this diet. My husband, son, and the puppy all agree!

5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

Again, I'm too new with this diet to have such craving. So far, I really don't feel as if I'm missing anything!

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?
I'm trying to increase my fiber intake. I love, love Fiber One cereal and Costco's organic 1% fat milk. This cereal has 14 g of fiber in 1/2 cup of serving. Yay-yah!!!

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?
I have never done this before, but I think I'm going to get my hair colored. I'm Korean-born and I have black hair and so far into my early 40's, the grays stayed away. Lately, I'm seeing some here and there, thank God for my mom's side of hair genes! I'm thinking of getting some cool highlights. :)

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

I like walking--it is free and you can do it everywhere! My new motto is "park a little further and live a little longer!"

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

I love shopping. I love bargain shopping at Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Homegoods, Steinmart, and Ross's. I'm into interior design, photography, fine arts, crafts and volunteering at my son's school 2 x's a week.

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

My husband is really cool about it. He's a great guy. My little 7-year old son the other hand, could be little difficult. I have an area in the kitchen that I keep his stuff in so I don't get tempted. Even he is learning about good nutrition at his early age at school. He is pretty funny--he is sometimes my know-it-all carb police. When he is eating Kashi's multi-grain crackers he tells me he is eating a good carb.

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

I am telling you I think this is it! Its messages are just so positive. I decided to just block out the negatives that want to creep in and sabotage me. I installed a NEG thought blocker in my head!

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

It is the missing piece for my weight loss. Appreciating and giving thanks for my perfect body, praising God for my wonderful, strong, healthy body is such a joy! Thank you, thank you, thank YOU, GOD! emoticon

Great idea!

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

After being overweight the past 10 years, I decided to stop putting the excuses of my mom's cancer and various life problems aside and jump right into getting myself happy. I had begun to put on the weight right after I quit smoking and it piled on 10 lbs. at a time - I went from 115 lbs. to 155 lbs in a few short months, so I have to really be careful with my emotions and focus on destroying one pound at a time. I joined SP after losing nearly 20 lbs. on the Biggest Loser Club and convinced 11 of my closest buddies to move here to continue on!

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

I used to be really embarrased about any weight loss comments because that meant that everybody knew I was fat, but now that I can acknowledge that I need to get in shape, the more positive comments the better!

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Just doing it! Dedicating 40-60 min every day to physical activity was very hard to begin, but my body craves it now!

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far? (For example, are you surprised how good you are at a sport or activity? Or were you amazed that you like healthy food more than you thought?)

I am amazed how easy it is to eat healthy and not be hungry! I choose fruits and vegetables when I have a craving now instead of a bag of chips and I don't really miss it!

5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

Butter popcorn, pizza and my all time favorite - mexican food!

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

It amazes me how good rice cakes are. There are so many flavors and they really satisfy my crunchy/salty/sweet urges.

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

A trip to Maui for our 10 year anniversary this September where we were married.

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Turbo Jam Videos

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

Kayaking, Swimming, Extreme water sports - I want to surf again!

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

My husband has come full-circle. He used to act as if it was not a big deal and I needed to do it on my own. I didn't have much of a support group since most of my friends were really thin, so I craved the kind of support I get from here. Now, he sees the confidence I have achieved from my groups and he is really proud of me. He eats my menu with me too.

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

It is helping in every way. I have discovered that I deserve to be healthy and fit. Keeping a positive attitude and image is a huge factor in my progress!

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

Every year I vowed to lose excess weight by my next birthday. Well in Oct 05 I got serious, lost 20 lbs, and then just stayed there for months - I only exercised and plateaued after 20 because diet is also equally important. I lost a bit more weight and then an online friend mentioned the sparkpeople website and I checked it out. I had previously PAID to subscribe to ediets and found this site so much better and it was FREE, so why not join.

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

Well it bugged the hell out of me when I thought I looked SOOOOO much better, thinner and not a person would comment. Now that I have taken off this recent 20 lbs I am having almost everyone who has ever known me in the past coming up and asking me about my weight loss. I went to the dentist with my son yesterday and they hadn't seen me in a few months and a couple girls came out to comment and ask me about it. I love the kudos and its good to remind myself how far I've come instead of thinking how much farther I need to go.

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Wow, all have been. Now I LIKE to exercise but finding the perfect time is elusive. I just workout when I can, ranges from 7am to 11pm, try never to skip more than one day a week. Food, think I have broken my emotional eating cycle, this current food plan made it uber easy. Transitioning today to another phase and am a bit apprehensive.

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far? (For example, are you surprised how good you are at a sport or activity? Or were you amazed that you like healthy food more than you thought?)

I'm amazed that now in pilates I can do everything with ease although it is still challenging to hold those poses, do the repititions, etc. Also my yoga instructor constantly complements my stance which is nice. Surpised I like spin class as it just looked like torture to me before trying.

5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

Chips - haven't had one in 7 weeks, same with cookies and any uber sweet treat - just don't have them. Really miss my french bread smothered with butter but you know I have had my fill of that stuff and I wouldnt' trade how I physically felt then for now. I know what it is like to eat with abandon and it isnt' worth it.

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

Canadian bacon, very flavorful.

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

I was thinking I would BEG my sil to watch the kids and fly to vegas with my H, wear some drop dead sexy cocktail dresses, see a couple shows and come home. You know a grown up vacation weekend.

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Pilates although I only do it once a week.

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

Exercise wise --Walking on the beach, walking/bike riding the trails, treadmill doing intervals.

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

Mixed reaction. Now that I'm almost there I have much more support. H has started exercising and told me he is going to start monitoring his food. Many nights he has eaten a huge bowl of ice cream next to me as I had a slice of roast turkey. I stil get snide comments from girlfriends and some now admit they are just not as motivated as I am to do anything about their weight. Think my success is making them feel more guilty than inspired.

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

I'm focusing more on the postives than the negatives. Reframing statements to reflect the joy I feel at my accomplishments and minimizing anything that may sound negative, like sore muscles, etc. I feel more at peace with where I'm at and know that I will reach my goals and maintain them for life. Also believe I am attracting more positive, helpful people into my world which is nice.

1.What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

I have always been overweight it seems like. I have been happy in my skin since I married my husband nine years ago. I want to loose weight to be healthy and better looking would be a nice bonus. I think knowing I just turned 49 I need to do this for me and my health.

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

I think I will like it. I get upset that I have not improved a lot lately. I have to step daughters that seem to be in a race to beat me. I don’t’ want to race…I just want to do it for me.

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Working out and developing the habit and wanting to work out. I have a treadmill, Total Body Gym-now I have the NEW MP3 player I got last night. Now I have to learn to enjoy the time listening to my downloads of the Secret stuff…awesome that there is so much for free.

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

I had been working on regaining my energy and health, but not systematically. I would overdo something and become injured or overstressed and get sick. When my doctor told me that I was pre-insulin resistant, I dropped carbs from my diet and cleared up the insulin resistance but my cholesterol was high and my doctor prescribed statin medications, which I refused to take. I found that Dr. Mirkin had written a book called the Healthy Heart Miracle and I went on that program and reduced my cholesterol. I subscribed to a couple of ebooks and joined a couple of blogs about fat burning. My success at lowering my cholesterol and losing weight made me curious to learn more. While I was keeping track of my foods, I decided that there must be a better way to do it my computer and I googled "calorie tracking" and found SparkPeople. I was just looking for a way to keep track of what I was doing manually as I was keeping a journal and I found so much more.

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

At 350 pounds, I was a big guy and my wife is petite, so the contrast was noticeable. When people noticed that my face wasn't as fat, that my clothes were fitting better, and I had more energy, it felt great!

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Initially tacking all of my food, because I was doing it manually with a book of nutrient values.

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far? (For example, are you surprised how good you are at a sport or activity? Or were you amazed that you like healthy food more than you thought?)
How much that I enjoy exercising. I hate exercise, except walking, and I had gotten away from that.

5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

Moroccan style lamb with a honey-spice baste.

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

The multiple vegetable chopped salad from Dr. Mirkin's Good Food Book, available free on the web from DrMirkin.com.

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

I plan to buy my own rowing machine and a boat kit to build myself a boat to row on the local lakes and in Mission Bay.

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Rowing on a Concept 2 Ergometer

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

Doing anything with my wife including going to the gym and exercising together. We like art museums, art galleries, gardens, walking in Balboa Park, dining out and being healthy, shopping, and just hanging out together.

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

My wife and I work out together and collaborate on making fantastic salads. My son introduced me to rowing an coached me with weigh lifting when I first started. He lives in France now, but we share tips on training and he is surprised by how much I row.

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

I focus on my goals and not where I have come from. I have a very positive attitude. I choose positive inputs instead of negative ones. I gave up talk radio, NPR, news, current events magazines and reduced my personal stress. I listen to KIFM 98.1 Smooth Jazz, on the radio in San Diego or on the web at KIFM.com. I love to help other people and make connections. It is about all of us winning, not just me. This is an awesome team to be on. I love the positive energy that you all exude. Thanks. emoticon

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

I became heavy when I was about 10. My first diet was when I was 14, and that was the start of a series of diets and yo-yo’ing with my weight plus or minus 60 lbs. several times. I was taught early on (albeit erroneously) that food was comfort and the only thing I could turn to when I was feeling bad.

I actually discovered SP after having seen the secret DVD and started to focus all my attention on my desire to lose weight. I also was lead to other tools for weightloss.

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

I’m one who feels uncomfortable and self-conscious. I don’t like attention. In fact, the last two times I lost a significant amount of weight, once people started commenting, I immediately started to backslide and ended up putting all the weight back on.

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Giving up my dessert snacking. I’m one who is addicted to sugar to the point that I can’t have just a little without ending up having a lot. I have to go cold turkey and give it up completely.

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far? (For example, are you surprised how good you are at a sport or activity? Or were you amazed that you like healthy food more than you thought?)

My pleasant surprise is how much I love to exercise. That part is easy for me. I love walking. I love jumping on my mini-trampoline. I even love strength training.

5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

All sweet treats, but especially cookies and ice cream. …oh, and Reese’s peanut butter cups!

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

I like a lot of healthy foods, but I was surprised to discover how much I like eating vegetables for breakfast! I like unconventional breakfasts; one of my favorites is tomato soup or taco bean soup, with a side of steamed spinach.

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

Taking at least $2,000 out of my savings and buying a whole new wardrobe....only if I get to 140 lbs. and stay there for at least 6 months!

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Walking outdoors while listening to my upbeat tunes on my ipod.

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

mini-trampoline and T-Tapp workout (a series of isometric exercises that use your own body weight for resistance)

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

My husband tends to sabotage at times, although I think it’s unconscious. He loves buffets and eating out in general, getting pizzas, etc. He genuinely would like me to lose weight and be healthier, but doesn't know how to support me. My sister is working on losing weight too, and she’s my biggest supporter.

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

I use affirmations and visualization techniques often. I stopped saying or thinking that it’s hard or that I can’t do it. I’m always focused on how I want to look and feel and don’t think about how much I have to lose. I’m able to relax more and be patient, with a knowing that I will reach my goal.

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

I had let myself become so consumed with other people, I realized I had put on 30-35lbs over the past couple years. I had spent a year taking care of my grampa, had him living with me and that took over the majority of my life. After that, it was a relationship with a man who was not worth the effort and made me miserable. It was that experience that finally opened my eyes to the fact that it was time to take care of ME. I found SPARK thru a girl at work, after being on another similar site for a couple months, but they treated each other horribly on the boards, completely opposite of this great site.

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

Not many people notice..A friend I hadnt seen in a couple years commented how great I looked the other night, and I admit that felt nice..I feel the same about me either way though, I'm noticing differences and that is what matters to me most.

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Intentional exercise by far..I love being active in warm weather, gardening and walking the dog, but this is the first winter EVER that I exercised and lost weight!

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far? (For example, are you surprised how good you are at a sport or activity? Or were you amazed that you like healthy food more than you thought?)

I too thought it was a gimick, saying you felt more energized the more you exercised, I was REALLY GLAD that was true! I have more energy now than I have in years and now that I'm the gramma of a sweet energetic 21 month old girl, thats a good thing!
5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

Ice cream and pizza

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

I always liked chicken, but now I've found I can eat it for a main meal more often than not and get creative so it doesnt get too boring. I miss fried foods now alot less than I thought I would, although the occasional craving still creeps in.

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

My plan is a carribean cruise in January 08

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Walking my mutt, hiking, or aerobics

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

Fishing, camping, working in the yard and modifying my landscaping more than some people rearrange their furniture.

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

I keep a pretty small circle of friends, and they're all pretty supportive. My daughter is a nurse, so she's been all for it and is happy that I am finally focusing on myself.

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

I had found out a few years ago that the universe will provide my needs if I believe and let go, however somewhere along the way I had forgotten. This time around I can see that since my primary focus the past few months has been my health, that I am in fact getting what I think most about, plus that the secret, law of attraction, etc is really no different for me as my previous reliance on God to provide everything I need in my life.

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

In January 2003 I stepped on a scale at Costco and reality hit at 182 pounds, I joined WW as I had friends who had lost weight there. After reaching my goal, I joined SP in 2004 (to maintain loss and track nutrients/exercise) as it was less expensive than WW ...and wow now it is free.

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

I loved it! Now I still love compliments but I have been this size for over 3 years so it is not 'new' size anymore.

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far? (For example, are you surprised how good you are at a sport or activity? Or were you amazed that you like healthy food more than you thought?)

Desserts like key lime pie, chocolate mousse, creme brulle, ice cream

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

Mary's Gone Crackers (wheat free),
fresh beets and beet greens

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

I bought a new wardrobe and took two vacations, one to Miami and the other to San Francisco

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Walking, walking, walking!

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

Rowing inflatable pantoon boat on Lake, climbing all over Red Rocks Amphitheater for concerts and scenic views, Push mowing my lawn.

I borrowed this from another thread and added the last question. If you want to participate just copy it and delete my answers and fill in your own. I'm looking forward to hearing your stories!

1. What made you decide that you were going to improve your health and lose weight (and join SP)?

I have always let my weight roll with my emotions. This time last year my 16 year old daughter ran away and was in crisis with her health (depression and drug problems). I lost weight while she was gone due to the extreme anxiety. After she resumed contact she still didn’t come home and I continued to be stressed out and made the stupid decision to cope by eating and drinking. I gained 20 pounds. For me anxiety causes weight loss (not the healthy kind) and stress causes weight gain. So, I got my sh&* together and dealt with the issue like a big girl! I’m sure it is not just a coincidence that when I started acting more responsibly so did my daughter. I am happy to say that she is living at home now and is taking her meds regularly and working a part time job. She will be taking her GED and going to community college in the fall. She was an honor student before this happened and she is excited about going back to school. One thing I’ve learned from all of this is that you can’t let the dips in life take away from the joy.

2. Do you like when people notice/comment that you've lost weight, or do you feel self-conscious?

I love it! Although, most people don’t notice. I’m tall enough to carry my weight and I carry it behind me, so from the front I really never look much different. The most important thing to me is that I feel better!

3. What lifestyle change has been the most difficult for you so far?

Working out so often and being hungry sometimes. At first working out was a chore that I had to bribe myself into. Now I love it and don’t like it if I can’t get to the gym. I still love to eat, however I don’t miss that sickening over full feeling!

4. What has been the most pleasant surprise so far? (For example, are you surprised how good you are at a sport or activity? Or were you amazed that you like healthy food more than you thought?)

That I really do have more energy! I always thought that was something people said to con you into working out! Plus, I’ve actually experienced the runners high, which took me by surprise! I thought that was a myth too!

5. What food do you wish you could eat with abandon instead of it being a once-in-awhile treat?

Brownies cookies ice cream candy chips chocolate ….

6. What is your favorite new healthy food discovery?

I always tried to eat healthy off and on, so no real surprises. Popcorn is a favorite panic food if I’m really hungry!

7. How do you plan to celebrate reaching your goal weight?

A trip to Hawaii for our 25th anniversary (Dec. 18th 2007)

8. What is your favorite form of exercise?

Weight lifting machines at the gym.

9. What are some of your other favorite activities?

Stationary bike, elliptical, hiking and walking my dogs.

10. Are your family and friends supporting you or making it difficult? Are any of your loved ones making healthy changes with you?

Everyone is supportive; most people in my family are pretty health/weight conscious. I remember my mom working out with Jack Le Lanne (on TV) when I was little! My husband and children are supportive, but not into it. I'd like for them to get healthier too, but that is their decision, not mine.

11. How is “The Secret” affecting your weight loss?

Since reading it I’ve let go of some of the concern about what I weigh and focused more on how great I feel! I’ve found more energy than I thought possible. I have always been “relaxed” and was told often as a child that I was lazy. I believed that and of course it became true. I am reprogramming my brain to realize that I have plenty of energy! I’ve also been somewhat of a hypochondriac and am learning that I actually feel wonderful! After a workout I’m not exhausted and sore, I’m energized and getting stronger. I have a renewed sense of wonder and hope. Isn’t life a beautiful experience?

When you say "Yes" to something, you include something you do want in your experience. When you say "No" to something, you include something you don't want in your experience.
