HI Tee!

Hypothyroid disease is a genetic tendency... but its not a given.
Meaning that if your parent is has thyroid disease, your chances of getting it are greater than if your parents don't have it... but it doesn't mean you're destined to get it.

I heard that children born from mother that took thyroid medication during pregnancy have a 50% higher chance of having thyroid disease. My eldest has thin hair, cold all the time, infertility problems, high cholesterol, can't lose weight, etc. Middle child (30) has been sweety since birth and infertile. Youngest is hyper with IBS, etc. All my children underwent thyroid test, which according to their HMO doctor, is normal. I bet their doctor only tested TSH. I keep asking my children for copy of their test results, but they have not been able to obtain copy from their doctor.

If you have a relative, particularly your mom and her sisters with thyroid disease, its a good thing to keep taps on.

It sounds like your symptoms are under control with the Tapazole, which is good news.
Wonder if you'll be able to get off it entirely and not have to do the RAI?

I suppose only time will tell... just keep positive!

Not much to update on. :P I'm not due for blood work for a couple of weeks and I don't see my endo until July 3rd. I'll be asking for more in-depth info on RIA and the variety of thyroid drugs I'd possibly be on if I did that. And long-term effects of generic Tapazole.

Yeah, that's basically what happened to me. I didn't know anything this serious (but treatable) was wrong until I got ER-worthy palpitations. Though, I must say, my mom kept telling me to get my thyroid tested because I've been intolerant to heat for years now. Even now, with improvement, I'm usually warm when others are comfortable and comfy when they're chilly.

Peeps, hey!

Hope you're doing well, haven't seen an update in some time.

Bottom line : Don't make any decisions your not comfortable with. Educate yourself so that you know what your choices are and why one choice is preferable to another.

I don't have any loyalty to any particular thyroid medication... I've been on several.

My circumstances are far different from yours, though.
Thankfully I dx'ed myself while my disorder was in its infancy...before my thyroid was totally out of control.... by insisting on testing despite push back from medical professionals.

So in that regard I was lucky.

Lots of times what happens is that doctors don't test TSH until things get crazy and your one of the walking wounded. Patients don't push for testing. Bad combination.

Man, all this talk about thyroid meds being recalled (for underactive) makes me think I should just stay on generic Tapazole rathe than getting RIA and going on Synthroid (what my endo said he'd put me on.) Haha. Then again, my aunt has been taking thyroid hormones (I think Synthroid) for longer than I've been alive and hasn't had any problems with availability.

Edit: I realize Synthroid and Levoxyl are probably quite different meds. I haven't really done much research on treatments for an underactive or removed thyroid yet.

hey Ladies!

Oroxine is not Levoxyl.
Its made by Aspen and is available outside of the US.

There isn't a generic Levoxyl to my knowledge.
I don't know if Pfizer (the manufacturer of Levoxyl) makes a generic.
If they do, it would have a different base formula then Levoxyl... only the active (T4, aka levothyroxine) would be the same.

I see the link that I posted earlier in this thread as to why Levoxyl was recalled is no longer working.

The reason was that customers complained that the pills had an uncharacteristic plastic odor to them which was attributed to the container.

Pfizer withdrew the medication just as a precaution and plans to have a new product on the market in 2014. Whether or not this means it will have the same bio-equivalency as the current Levoxyl is yet to be determined. Whenever there's a change to the base formula, there's a good chance the potency of that medication will be effected in one direction or another.

I found out levoxyl was recalled today. No wonder doctors are recommending synthroid. A doctor I follow on facebook recommends Thor(?). States it is the only medication that has never been recalled.

Mzz, don't you know the bottom line is the most important thing for drug companies, not how much they help people?

Here's why they recalled it:

Get a load of this eyeroller from the article:

I am in shock. I called yesterday to get my prescription refilled and I find out that a month and a half ago that Levoxyl was recalled and that its not coming out until 2014 or 2015. I have been on it for 13 years...ugh.

I spoke to my Dr and he is switching me to Synthroid.

Has anyone else done the switch yet?
