I don't think that doctors will be more aware of the thyroid, but possibly patients will be and ask for tests. Sometimes the hardest thing, is to get a test... particularly if you don't have the typical outward signs of hypothyroid disease.
Docs tend to wait until things are full blown.
IMO its best to catch things and treat early.
In my case, I had to argue with the Planned Parenthood nurse to give me a test for at least 30 minutes.
She kept insisting I looked too healthy, was still in a good weight range for my height, etc.
I was paying out of pocket, the TSH test was $12... so its not like it was costing my insurance company a dime... it was just sheer ignorance on her part.
She finally relented when I told her I wasn't going to leave the examination room until I was tested and joked around about the chain saw in my car. ha
And so it goes...
