oh geez Purr, I can't even imagine that sounds like a horrid ordeal! And I did let my doctor and my pharmicist know about my headache from the Bactrim and consider myself lucky I didn't have a worse reaction.

Makes me remember when I was in college and given sulfa for a bladder infection, told I got measles after taking the sulfa, got another bladder infection and was told I had the measles again. ALLERGIC REACTION anyone!?

I went back to my doctors yesterday and I still need antibiotics so she gave me a prescription for Cipro. Joyful I will have to go to the drugstore and get some AZO to try.

Luna, Headache and sore throat are known, common side effects of Bactrim, you really should have let your DR know as soon as you had symptoms.

Bactrim is effective against enterococci which is the cause of most UTI's in women.

Used to get UTIs...bad, chronically. Doc gave me Cipro, and took AZO Standard (OTC). Another good med is Levaquin, is very expensive, even with insurance, but knocks out a UTI, brochitis/sinus infection really quickly. I am allergic to some meds, so that narrows my choices. You really must read about the side effects every time you take a new med, need to know if you are losing your mind or having a side effect...LOL

PS: Yes have taken Bactrim, did not have any bad side effect, but did not take care of the UTI either...grrrrrr

Thanks Everyone!

Mizz: You always give good info! I have been on augmentin before for sinus infections with really no side effects. I didn't even know it was used to treat UTIS. I go back to the drs. tomorrow since my UTI symptoms have not cleared up at all. I will see if I can get her to prescribe that. I def do not want Bactrim again!

And your answer to Emma helped me figure out something I was wondering. I was curious exactly how long these antibiotics can effect your thryoid. I kinda wonder if that is what my sore throat is, my thyroid being a little irritated. I am startng to kinda have that crushing wind pipe feeling to. Haven't had that in forever!!

Gracious... your allergic reaction to that antibotic you were taking sounds frightening!
I've heard of what you have described here... being okay with a medication or other product for years, then the body goes into total revolt and won't tolerate even a drop. Nothing like having a reaction to deal with on top of whatever condition you were taking the antibotic for!

Many antibiotics effect thyroid function and mess up your TSH, some more than others.
When your thyroid is irritated, it will feel sore... and in your case having increased post-nasal drip even worse.

That's why getting your thyroid numbers run within several weeks of taking them will sometimes give you an elevated TSH and why its best to wait 8 weeks after antiboditic use.

I don't know how it effects the thyroid but i used to take this all the time for sinus infections. I seemed plagued by them when i was younger. until one time i got worse instead of better. I started having a fever and turned bright red all over, and you guess it i'm sure. i ended up having an allergic reaction after years of use. I almost always get a sore throat with any antibiotics i think because of the problems with my sinuses. the doctors think they drain more with antibiotics, thus causing my sore throat.

I would definitely mention to the dr or his office.

Hey Luna!

Sorry to hear that you have a UTI. Man o Man do I hate those! I used to get them when I was younger, thankfully they are a thing of the past. I could not use Sulfa drugs... UTIs where what revealed this allergy.

Beware of the "floxins" any antibiotic that is fluoride based as these effect the thyroid as well.

It depends on the organism(s) that are causing the problem, but for uncomplicated UTIs, you may want to try Augmentin, which is a combo of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid. The generic is called Amoxicillin Clavulanate. The dose is Augmentin 875 twice a day, or Augmentin 500 mg 3 times a day. But your doc will know this.

If you have allergy to the penicillin based antibotics, this would not be a good choice for you.

If UTIs are a chronic condition, you may want to try a D-Mannose supplement.
D-mannose prevents bacteria from clinging to the walls of the bladder.

Feel better soon!

PS. If you are in pain, ask your doctor to give you some pyridium. It does stain your urine a dark orange color, but its wonderful for getting rid of those horrible spasms that often accompany UTIs.

I suspect the headache and sore throat are side effects from the medication, call your Dr and let them know.

I was prescribed Bactrim for a urinary tract infection/bladder infection. I read the drug information from my doctor and everything seamed ok, like it would not interfere with anything else I take or any of my health conditions. I started to take them on monday. I started to get a headache and sore throat, so decided to lookd up the side effects on rxlist.com. Reading the inforamtion there it says that it can effect your endocrine system: the sulfonamides bear certain chemical similarites to some goitrogens. Use caution in those with thyroid disorders. Now I am wondering if I should worry and try and get another antibiotic prescribed.
