Thanks for all the suggestions about coffee/creamer and when to take meds, also for the link about the effects of coffee on thyroid meds. I have learned so much more from everyone here than anywhere! I'm going try the suggestions and take my synthroid when I wake up in the middle of the night and see how that goes. Thanks everyone!

Does anyone take their synthroid at night? Is that a bewtter option than being starving and rushed in the morning...oh and tired, too from no coffee!?

Coffee alert people!! Coffee interferes with the absorption of your thyroid meds. Read all about it here.

I'm like Minxxa. I keep my Levothyroxine next to my bed with a bottle of water and take in when I wake up in the middle of the night. I always wake up and have no problem going back to sleep so that's what works for me. I take my vitamins and supplements at lunchtime.
Some people like to take their meds at bedtime and thats ok too as long as you haven't ate for a few hours. Or you can wake up early take your meds and go back to sleep for awhile. You just have to experiment to find out the best method for you cause no 2 people are alike!

You most likely wouldn't notice any "ill effects". There's not going to be a reaction that would make you sick, or that you would notice. What is happening is that the calcium in the vitamins most likely is blocking the Synthroid from absorbing into your system. The effect you would likely see is your levels not coming down (or coming down much slower), and needing a higher level of medication.

Here's a link to a post on that question on Mary Shomon's site: thyroid.about.com/cs/vitaminsuppleme

/a/calcium.htm

Personally, I take all my vitamins after dinner. I take my synthroid in the middle of the night... I put it by the bed with water and when I get up to go to the bathroom, I take it really quick and go back to sleep. It sounds more of a hassle than it is, I mostly always get up at 1 or 2, and this way by the time I wake up I'm good to go.

Just a suggestion!

I browse over the literature but the calcium is over the counter. I knew to wait a half hour after taking synthroid to eat and I am not great about that but have had no ill effects so....butI had never heard that Ever! Hmmmmm...goes to show that it's good to chat here!

I'm surprised that your medication literature didn't say to wait for 1 to 4 hours after taking Synthroid. Calcium interferes with Synthroid's absorption and you should wait 4 hours after taking Synthroid.

What is the suggestion for calcium with synthroid? I take all my vitamins and medicines together in the morning...my levels are all good but I never heard of a rule...so again I'm learning more from you guys than the doctors.

I don't ingest any calcium until 4 hours have passed since taking my meds. My coffee creamer is non-dairy and contains no calcium. I don't take any chances in
my meds. getting messed up.

I think the delay between taking your meds and eating is a guideline because I often am running late and I can only wait ten minutes and I do not feel any repurcussions from not following exact instructions....sometimes the best bet is to try it and see....how your body reacts, if you have any side effects but I really think as long as the pill goes in on an empty stomach and has a chance to start to absorb it's fine.

I'm not sure that there is enough calcium in your coffee creamer to worry too much about. But the calcium in milk is enough to be concerned about-at least according to the endo. But I'm not too experienced so someone else may have better advice. I am also unsure of how long you need to wait before drinking milk or taking a calcium supplement.

Hello,
Ok, this may be a silly question but here it goes. Does anyone have any advice on whether or not having coffee creamer in your coffee will affect your thyroid? Also having milk in the morning in your cereal. I know synthroid is very sensitive, but what if you wait an hour or two, I really need my coffee creamer.
Thanks,
Dawn
