I'm very happy for you, Kat. My energy does lag even though I'm supposed to be hypo, now. I tried Synthroid once on the recommendation of my new endo. I got a pain in my throat and didn't dare take it again, at the time. All I really want is to get some Armour, to experiment with it. I will try Synthroid one more time for my endo and if I feel another pain in my throat, perhaps he will have to prescribe me some Armour. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it did for me what it did for you!! We are all so different but I can hope.

I can relate to your not getting any work done around the house. I've gotten worse over the last year or so, to the point where I need to try something different.

Your input is inspiring.

My energy level went up and I'm finally out of this brain fog that I've been experiencing for years. It feels so good to be able to do more than just the basics. I've been cleaning more and dancing around the house. I'm beginning to feel like me. :)

Thanks SKEEWEEAKA for your reply!
I had radio active iodine 35 yrs ago. I'm going to ask my Dr if maybe changing to Armour will help jump start my metabolism.

Rite-Aid also carries Armour I didn't have any trouble.
Even when they changed the dosage from 15 to 20 mg it was in stock

The drug companys keep trying to tell Docs that Armour is being taken off the market but it isn't. There were a few dosages that were being redone and that did cause a bit of a hiccup but it can be worked around. I don't have any problem getting my script filled at CVS. Armour has been around for about 100 yrs so I think time has proven it works.

Armour is a natural "drug" for people with low thyroid fuction. My doctor is very much a proponent of natural remedies. It is hard to find a pharmacy that can provide Armour. I think the drug companies are making it more difficult than need be. Anyway, please ask your doctor about it. It has helped a lot with the awful coldness I always feel. The only real challenge with it has been the weight issue. I am going to talk to her about it next week. Maybe there is something in combination that can help with the weight.

I can't believe how many people have this problem. I was surprised when I was diagnosed - even though I had been cold and losing my hair for several years. Finally someone ordered the blood tests ane found my thyroid is not working at all. I don't know where this will all take me but it is comforting to know I am not alone.

Justaskme...Armour is a natural thyroid med that contains both T3 and T4...more T4 though! The body produces T3, T4 and other T's so some doctors think it is best so give the body more of what it makes... T3 is the energy hormone and if your body is not converting T4 to T3 then that could actually be a problem. Your doc could also just add T3, however, it he won't make the switch!

If you are autoimmune, wheat intolerance could be a problem for you. I went off it as an experiment. Maybe that is why I started losing weight. I used to gravitate to whole wheat bread, pancakes, etc. Loved them! Someone pointed out to me that if I am preoccupied with one particular kind of food that very well may be the sort of food I should be avoiding. Sorta like we all crave sugar because it makes us feel good, initially, but then it comes back to bite us, lowering our blood sugar and making us want more, again! Same may be true about wheat in as much as we crave it when it may be working against us. We like (benefit) from foods that work for us but we don't crave them. I dunno, just something to think about and perhaps experiment with.

Right now I am on 120's with 50 of levoxyl. I take 60 of Armour and the 50 of Levoxyl in the morning and the other 60 in the afternoon.

30's are a very low dose. The started you out the right way and will work you up as needed. This is the safest way.

Julia,

I've never been hyper, before. I have always been hypo. This is the first time I've even gone from hypo to hyper. I'm in new territory. My doc is not giving me hyper meds, just the same hypo ones. Perhaps he thinks it's temperary, I dunno.

This did NOT occur because of the compounded cytomel I went on. I only took 2.5 mgs of it. Multiply that by four and you've got 10 mcgs added to the 50 levothyroxine I was already on. No big deal. My last blood test showed my TSH go DOWN to make me hyper and my T3 went down, also. Go figure. It should have gone up. I suppose I'm to conclude my body is not converting T4 to T3, properly.

THank you for that bit of information. My TSH has been really low, lately, so that I'm officially hyper but my doctor was ignoring the numbers and upping my meds according to how I felt. I didn't understand how upping my meds would help me be less hyper. He upped my med, slightly, and told me to come back for a blood test in 3 months. Sounds like a long time, considering I'm supposed to be hyper all this time.

The antibodies test he did came back negative. He said it checks for most antibodies but not all, so the results were not conclusive. Where to from here?

I was told it was also a symptom of being hyper. I did mostly notice it when my TSH was really low.

My doc switched me from levothyroxine to synthroid. I never had joint pain on levothyroxine. But, to be fair, I was always on glucosamine/Chondroitin all that time. I only went off it because it interacted with the antibiotic I took for a month. I'm back on it, now, and no more joint pain. The morning I woke up with joint pain, I swear it was the level of "10" in my elbow. It was painful just to remove the pillow that was touching my elbow. Go figure. I thought it was very unusual.

I just tried Synthroid for the first time and woke up the next morning with a sore in my throat. When I reached to see where I hurt, I found myself touching my thyroid gland. I didn't dare stay on it past that one day. The next day, my throat was much better. Today, I feel nothing in my throat at all.

Has anyone had increased joint pain on Synthroid? I had a scary bout with that on the same morning my throat hurt after taking the one dose. It could be that my joints hurt because I had been off my glucosamine chondroitin for a whole month.

Anyway, I'm not a synthroid fan at this point. Just in case the throat and joint pain was a fluke, I will get rid of all joint pain by returning to gluco/chon and then give synthroid one more try. If I get that throat pain, again, that's it! No more of that stuff!

These doctors seem to be really sold on synthroid, like it's the gold standard for the industry. Not according to the feedback we get in this forum. I'm sure it works for some. Others, no. I just wonder what percentage of people it does not work for.

I too was afraid of taking synthroid due to all the side effects I read about people having. But after having a pounding heart and palps on Armour I gave synthroid a try. I did get itchy on it so my doctor had me try Levoxyl which I have had no problems with.

There are different medications out there and each persons body is different. Trial and error worked for me.

I have taken armour for about 2 years and have a hard time losing weight. However, it was hard before I started the armour which is one of the reasons my thyroid was tested. I do have more energy, but most of my other symptoms are still around. I've heard people that take synthroid often have bad side effects, so I've stuck with the armour (I am on a low dose).

I also am struggling with other hormones, but I'm hoping that regular exercise and a better diet will help there as I've tried various bioidentical hormones and those really packed on the pounds.

If it has only been a month remember it takes your body at least 2-3 months to get itself regulated. It took my body 3months on this med the wait was worth it though. because even though at the start I gained a few pounds in the end I am far better off. No symtoms of thyroid at all not even hair loss. I am now losing weight were I couldn't no matter how much I worked out before or ate right I never droped an once. So hang in there give it a chance to really work for you. Don't panic like some people do just hang in there.

I was put on Armour (at my request) in Oct. Blood test in Dec showed high so they added my Levoxyl back in at a lower dose. I had my checkup 2 weeks ago and I lost 5 lbs (still trying to figure out where I lost it lol). Will see how things go this week after last bloodtest.

Thanks for the response. I know for sure it was the thyroid med; but from what I have just read from everyone including all the articles and attachments, it looks like it is a small price to pay for a natural med that may help me. It has only been a month so I will see what the doctor says. P.S. I started a food diary yesterday just to keep me honest. It is a great tool.

I had a hard time losing weight on Synthroid after two years with no loss I turned to Amour and now I can lose weight not a lot at one time but definately going down about a pound a week. All my thryroid symtoms are gone as well. You have to find out what works for you we are all different. You must be honest with yourself is it the Amour or is it none tracked foods adding up. Not saying you are just be honest. It took me a long time to know for certain with out a doubt it was the synthroid for me.
