Funny I found this topic. I just posted something similar a few days ago. I have lost 41 lbs since Aug. I seem to have some hypo symptoms returning. When I gained weight in my pregnancies they never changed my dosage. I've been on the same dose for a few years. I did just change from levathroid to levothyroxine in August so I don't know if that might be it. I want to ask my endo about switching to armour, but I have a feeling he might be resistant to the idea. I also am not sure I want to go through adjusting doses. I remember from before when I did that and on one dose I took, well let's just say I got it changed pretty quick before I did something to myself. I get allergy injections (4 of 'em) once a month so having blood drawn every few months isn't a high priority either. I will probably try to pay attention to my symptoms, make a list, and then call the endo after the new year. Oh, and I thought the cold then hot thing was because unless I reset the heat, it drops down after 9pm for the night and I'm usually up til midnight. We keep the upstairs at 66, but we have a thick "quilt" (I think it might be a duvet - it's a British thing). Figured I was freezing from being in the cold and then waking up sweating from the quilt.

I lost 30 pounds over the last 6 months, went in for my regular thyroid level check and to my surprise the levels were UP!!ok have noticed some hair lose and skin more dry and cant sleep and fuzzy thinking. The Dr. up the dosage well no change except now I have lost 2 pounds with out trying!! heck I over eat at family dinners just knew i had gained back a few pounds and was upset at myself for being that weak! I worked hard to lose them 30 pounds, but I lost! could the meds cause the weight to stay off and me lose them 2 pounds ! I have been on Synthroid for 6 years without a dosage change after we got the right dosage for me until the last 5 weeks I go tomorrow to have the levels checked again. If you lose weight you should lose dosage??? well I went the other WAY

I'm hot all of the time. I am never cold. I can be in a 60 degree room and I'll be asking if it's hot in there to anyone else. They all look at me like I'm crazy. Even when I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I never felt cold. I'm not sure why. At first my TSH was so out of control, my doctor said that by all indications, I should be shivering even on the hottest day.

My doctor has been lowering my Levothyroxine for the last 2-3 years. He'll lower it and it will be ok, then 6 months later, at my next blood test, it will need lowering again. Three months later, it's alright. Six months later, it needs lowering again. My weight has fluctuated up and then down (and now, up again) throughout this time. I, too, worry that if I take too low a dosage, I won't be able to lose weight at all, or that I'll keep going up and up no matter what I do.

I have been hypothyroid for ten years. I am seventy one now. I get so hot in the middle of the night I have to push off the clothing. If I am sleeping comfortably and get upito go to the bathroom, the heat will start as soon a s I get back in bed. I have gained weight lately and I do think it has a lot to do with it. I had a hysterectomy when I was forty four and was on Premerin for years until the "Big Scare". I can also get "Hot flashes" in the middle of the day.

I doubt it , your problem sounds more like a different hormone problem to me. You did not say if you had a complete Hysto, Did they leave one or both ovaries. If so it sounds to me as if you may need some estrogen and testerone. I'm no expert but have been through Hot flashes many years ago, of course I still have all my parts. But usually hypo will leave you feeling cold when every one else is comfortable. Just my insight. Good luck

I had a histo when I was 27 years old, that has been a looong time ago. So I knew it was not that. My husband will wake me up, because he can fill the heat coming off of me. It is the same for me. Feet ice cold when first go to bed , then it is like somebody turned my thermostat to high while I am sleeping. When I first wake up, soaked in sweat, then I start to cool down when I am awake. I just thought it was me. I have been on Armour for a week now. Feel much better. But still having problems with the thermostat. At least when I told my Doctor that it was like somebody playing with the thermostat he did not look at me like I was crazy. Now for my question will that slow down as my body gets use to the Armour? emoticon

I've lost 120 lbs in the last 3 yrs and my dosage has not changed at all. I suppose that might be due to the fact that I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and my thyroid is at the point where it doesn't function at all anymore???

I have lost 10 lbs since starting I believe (down 15 from when I started meds all together) and lately been feeling like my symptoms have returned. However I have plateaued at my current weight for the past 4 weeks so I don't think it is the weight loss that has caused it as my symptoms returned in the last week. I too go to bed FREEZING and wake hot in the middle of the night. I never thought of this as a symptom but just my body being crazy!

Thanks for the info everyone! I think I get it now. As I lose weight, my TSH level should go lower and my synthroid will probably be reduced. It has already been reduced once and I don't like it because I'm more tired, cold, splitting thumb nails, and losing hair at a faster rate and harder than ever to lose weight. It's not motivating for weight loss when this is what happens as a result.

Yes, as it does for all medications. Though most other Specialist don't seem to give it much thought at all. My Endo Specialist has had to consistently 'lower' my dosage due to: weight loss, metabolism & consider all the other med's I'm taking also to ensure no interactions (though he didn't inform me of the foods & drinks that could or vitamins). Also, the more active you are the faster your body & metabolism processes the med's too.

I find this thread very interesting as I, too, often go to bed shivering and wake up during the night sweating and throwing off the covers, even tho then the air feels cold but I don't. I can't answer the topic question about weight as I haven't lost anything but I really must get busy and buckle down to getting this weight off. emoticon

Im afraid if my endo keeps lowering my dosage to meet my weight loss the weight will stop coming off. Has anyone had this happen? an abrupt stop when meds change?

My Endocrinologist told me that the more weight I lost the less Synthroid I would have to take.

For those of you who are cold most of the time, especially if you're experiencing hair loss, you might want to have your ferritin levels checked. I've been unbearably cold for so long now it's been crazy, and my ferritin level was almost non-existent. It takes a very long time to build your iron levels back up, so best to find out sooner than later.

I am learning so much from this team! I am very cold most of the time and also wake up in the night being too warm. I thought the coldness had to do with not enough thyroid but couldn't figure out the hot spells. After weight loss some are saying their symptoms of low thyroid are coming back but others are saying that as you lose, your synthroid needs to be reduced. I'm confused. Clarification, anyone?

Wow I never knew that cold to hot when sleeping was a symptom. I just had to have my dosage lowered due to weight loss and my tsh changing due to it. I was like the previous poster I just thought I got hot because my blankets are so warm. thanks for that info. I love this site..

Absolutely! The less 'body' there is, the less medication you usually need. My dosage has needed changing for every 8-10 lb loss I've had. Every person is different though. You can always gauge if it's time for a dosage change based on your symptoms.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! emoticon Thanks SEESAW!! My doc mentioned that my numbers were a little off indicating that my dosage might be a little too high now. Now it makes sense!

I have never heard that going to sleep cold and waking up hot is a symptom of thyroid issues, I just figured it was since it improved once my levels were regulated. But now it is happening again. Now I'm convinced it is because of these responses! Interesting, eh?

Yes, weight does affect how much Synthroid you take. My endo said for me to tell him if I lose or gain 15 lbs either way because the dosage will need to be changed then.

I'm another one who goes to sleep freezing cold and wakes up during the night kicking off covers. I did not associate it with the hypothyroid but it sure sounds like it could be related. I have never heard of dosages needing to be changed as you lose weight however. My dr goes strictly by your test numbers, unfortunately. I know some take into account your symptoms too.

I have wondered the same thing, if losing weight can have any effects, but hopefully mine hasn't changed already. I didn't realize going to sleep cold but waking up hot is a symptom of thyroid because I do go to sleep freezing, but usually wake up in the middle of the night because I get so hot, but I have had this problem for years. Also it does seem like I have been a lot colder lately, when everyone else says they are fine I do wonder if maybe my medication needs to be adjusted.
My doctor didn't mention anything about weight lose having any effects with my dosage and I have lost about 15lbs since they got the dosage right and my dr. said I don't need it checked until next Sept. so I am wondering also if maybe i should call and asked to have my levels checked again.

Hi all, I have been on the same dose of synthroid since March of this year and have been doing pretty well on it (levels were finally good after 1 year of changing doses to get it right). However, I've lost almost 12 pounds since July and some of my previous symptoms have returned - feeling cold frequently a little more tired than usual. It's easy to make excuses for symptoms as I did before I found out I had a thyroid problem. I can attribute feeling tired to early morning work outs and sometimes not getting enough sleep. But I'm cold a lot too. Also, I go to sleep cold but wake up hot. Does anyone else do that? My husband thinks its crazy. I had this problem before I was diagnosed and it's happening again.
So my question is, can losing weight affect your dose? I'm due to go back in early February and I will find out about my levels then. I also intend to inquire about Armour.
I would also like to make a confession. I'm not much of a coffee drinker so in the mornings that I work out, I take a caffeine pill to help me get going. The package says one pill is equal to 1 cup of coffee. Does anyone see any danger with this? I have had no ill effects from it. I really drag through my work out if I don't take it.
