Do you know your calcium number. Before my OP mine was high and I never knew until now cause I can tell a difference. I'm not as tired or "foggy". As for low I guess it depends on how low. They may want you on it for the health of your bones. However if it drops dramatically you would know, your hands, feet, lips etc go numb. Just kind of fall a sleep. It's horrible.

I currently take 1 pill that is 500 mg 50%of the daily value.

Thats really intersting about the calcium - hmmm. I may have to do this. I'm only taking on 100mg (I think its mg) pill at the mo' but the doctor says that my blood works says I should take more, but if I'm not experiencing any symptoms I should leave it as it is...

Hi Its, yes it was thats why I worry so much about my brother John ,Because they couldn't operate on him. So hopefully he will be ok ,I am the oldest of 7 . eight counting my foster brother he died in a house fire 2 weeks after 9/11 My father died in 2001 twenty days later my sister in law died and my foster brother same year later in year.The strangest thing was my sister in law took care of my father until a month before he died. got to go work calls me

Wow, you've been thru a lot with all of your family. I was a smoker in my early 20s. However the cancer I have has nothing to do with it, it's just bad genes. However I still smoke if I'm in at a party and drinking. But since I found out I had Thyroid cancer it made me think differently even about that. I'm so sick of being poked with needles and then waiting for the outcome. I'm trying to live a healthier lifestyle.

Its, I had the surgery but had radition also
my brother had both chemo and radition .My dad died from lung cancer ,We all were smokers.I haven't had a cigarette since the day they told me I had cancer.My type was Samous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx they told me without the surgery I had a 30percent chance of living with it i had a 50 percent chance of making it.So I took the 50 percent.I have been cancer free since 1995

I'm sorry you had cancer also. I was lucky I never had to go thru any radition. The type I have radition or chemo will not kill it the only course of action is surgery.
I'm going to try the Cinnamon, I'd never heard that before but whatever will help. I did lose 1lb since last week I just hope it will continue in that direction. How's everyone doing?

hi Its, I didn't have thyroid cancer but ,I had larynx cancer they took it out and the cartilage above it, after the radition my thyroid quit working right .So I know how you feel

I can lose 5 lbs doing absolutely nothing, then the next week doing the same thing, I'll put on 10. I'm going to start walking as far as I can. Maybe I can run in late summer.

Kathy---I was HYPER before my surgery in Jan. The symptoms were very similar to Hypo, for me at least-being tired, not losing, odd periods, etc. My endo says that being "too active" can wear you out and you have the same symptoms as not having enough activity, and because of the increased activity with HYPER, you can get more hungry and eat more and gain, too. Just my luck, I said, why can't I be one of those "hyper" folks who weight 100 pounds and have boundless energy? emoticon Oh well.

Now, my tests so far show I'm still HYPER with TSH of 0.1, but I'm having more bloodwork at the end of the month. Dr says it will take a while to get the Synthroid right. Sometimes, it's just so frustrating!

I have been taking Maca Root which is suppose to relieve menopause symptoms and it also mentioned that it could improve hypo. I'm wondering now if it only affects the TSH and not the T3 & T4. I stopped taking it today and I will tell my doctor about it and ask for a new blood test. I think that might be the problem.

I'm glad to here with exercise it's possible to lose weight. I don't mind that. I've been walking at least 2.8 miles a day but before my operation at the end of april I was thrown from a horse into a gate so my back isn't great I have started Physical Therapy with seems to be helping. Anyway so far this year has been different to say the least.

I don't know anything about Hyper, sorry.

You sure have your plate full. What I've found with the excercise part of it is I have to excercise a lot more than I ever have to get the same results. Once I decided not to feel bad about that and accepted it as my reality it became much easier. I spend a lot of my time being very tired also. It takes tremendous commitment to just put one foot in front of the other, once I started getting consistent results it became easier and now I look forward to it.

Has anyone out there had their thyroid go in the opposite direction? TSH now shows that I am hyper, but none of my symptoms have changed. Any ideas?

Hi, I had a normal thyroid but had to have a total thyroidectomy 3/06 due to a rare type of thyroid cancer they also removed a parathyroid and lymph nodes. I gained a bunch of weight right after the surgery and have began to try and lose it. I have been pretty discouraged since I never had a problem if I wanted to lose I would just watch what I eat and if I exercised the weight would fall off. Not now. I know I have only been really trying for a week, before this I was to tired and worn down to exercise. This is something else I've struggled with before I had the surgery I was pretty active and never sick.

Anyway I was searching to find others without thyroids to see if I'm ever going to feel normal again. I'm on Levothyroxin, it was just increased to 175 and I do know to take my calcium 4 hours seperate.

As for the menstrual trouble, I have always been very timely but heavy however after the surgery I was almost 2 weeks late and it was horrible. I havent had that much pain ever. I'm hoping it was just cause it was the first after the surgery so I will wait and see this month.

I wish you all luck with the weight loss or control whichever point you may be at.

I've been doing this since March 8th and have lost 24 lbs. The key ingredient for me has been excercise. I have done a lot of diets with cal restriction but have not committed myself to excercise. I would lose 10-15 lbs then nothing. I went without any sugar none whatsoever in my diet for 7 weeks and lost nothing. Eating right, dedicated excercise and drinking plenty of water seem to be getting me there.

HI Shar, my name is Kitty I take two pills a day for my thyroid the Dr said they don't make a strong enough pill for me .I have lost 60 lbs,since Oct the 12th . emoticon

I remember what wild oats said coconut oil changes into a bad oil under high heat I can't remember the type of fat it changes into but it changes the chemical compound in it

So about the coconut oil. Every time I would start searching the internet for info on natural helps for hypothyroidism, I would find links about this coconut oil. There are lots of websites out there that say that adding coconut oil to your diet will help you lose weight, including those with hypo. I have not tried it, and am skeptical. If you want to check it out, simply search "Hypothyroidism and coconut oil".

Mary Shomon on About.com is a good resource for hypothyroidism, and has some opinions about it, saying that it is no miracle cure. I am sure it is not as well. By this time, I know that nothing will make the pounds melt off except hard work! =)

I'm still trying to make things a habit.Find that i have to push myself every day todayI walked 2.6 miles so far outside up and down hills on street it took me 75 minutes On my gazelle it would't take me that long.I take olive oil .with coconut oil you can't cook on high it causes the things in it to change for the worse i can't remember what wild oats told me. PS: I had a 10 back pack on walking today

What have you heard about coconut oil? I have found that my weight does not move without me moving. I excercise 1 hr a day 7 days a week. It felt daughnting in the beginning, but now I look forward to it and don't feel as well if I don't do it. It became self motivational. I read once that it takes 4 weeks to make something become a habit so it promised myself to do my excercises for 4 weeks with no complaints, no matter how I felt. Seems to have worked. I can't tell you what a difference it's made!

We have rain coming in the next hour or so and it's suppose to rain at least through Friday. Looks like we move our garage sale up another week! It's good for the garden though, something about rain water that seems better for everything.

I get a little bummed out when the skies are gray for days on end. I make sure that I get excercise indoors on those days and turn a lot of lights on inside, it helps keep my spirits up. Music helps too.

Hello, Everyone! I'm new to Sparks, about a month, and had a total thyroidectomy in 1/06 for large nodules and a "surprise" malignancy (yikes!). Before, I was HYPERthy and now am still trying to hit the right Synthoid dose. It's very hard to lose weight this way, I agree. On a higher med dose, I had pounding heartbeat, high bp, etc; on this lower dose, there's the fatigue and hunger....I guess I just need to be patient. Luckily, I have a great supportive endo. Any of the ladies here having menstrual troubles? I've always been irreg and heavy, but since the surgery, it's worse. I had an ultrasound and am going for a second with the gyno, but no ideas yet. We're trying Depo shot this month, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Thanks for listening, and have a "in range" day!

I'm way past having my dosage checked then. I had a hard time when I started the med, my doctor didn't tell me to start at 1/4, then1/2 then 3/4 then 1. I started on full dosage to begin with and had a bad reaction. It took a while to get going.

Hd- What is RAI? Since your thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone, you are a walking miracle! That's amazing! Could it still be meds in your system? Amazing. The human body never ceases to amaze me!

I have heard a lot of endos say to wait 6 weeks after any dosage change in order to see the full effect, however, my endo humors me and lets me go in for tests every three weeks.

I have Grave's, which makes you hyper, but they did RAI and ultimately had to remove my entire thryoid in September. For some reason (which no one can explain), I have been off any thyroid meds since November and my levels are in range (and have been for 2 and a half months). They do expect me to go hypo at some point and start me on synthroid, until then it is a waiting game. This is not a good disease for us impatient folks!

Thanks for the tip. My doctor here is not well versed on Thyroid and he is resistant to my thinking for myself. It is a very small town in the mid-west, it is very difficult to to get this kind of assistance. I will see if I can get him to adjust it.....

I have also cut way down on meat, I eat very little and almost no red meat. Even though I am excercising more than 50% of my calories a week away I am only losing a few lbs a month.

Hi,I use ground I add it to my yogurt but you can add it to your tea but sticks might be better if you put it in your tea
I use cinnamon a few times a day and I drink green tea a couple times a day .They are supposed to boast your metabolism.You know I was tired a lot when my medicine needed boosting up.If it will be more than a few days before you move ,you might want to see the Dr before hand. they have decaffenated green tea the green tea also is more liquid for your body to.I like to put cinnamon on my apples helps me get them down.I eat very little meat now .I like beans eggs and peanut butter. Everything I do to change helps me feel better.As the weight comes off I get more energy

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Thyroid group. Was diagnosed last October and weight loss is very slow. I have found excercising consistently helps burn cals, but am still struggling with energy. I am moving to a different state soon so I am waiting to do the endocrynoligist when we arrive.

Please tell me more about the cinnamon and green tea.

I am taking a new supplement called Maca root, it's suppose to help boost metabolism as well as balance those pesky menopause hormone imbalances. I just started a week ago and haven't seen any results that I can attribute to it yet. I'll keep everyone posted in case it works.

Anyway, info on the cinnamon would be great, do you add it to your tea? Ground or stick?

thank you for the reply. I see my dr again on May 15. Hopefully he will correct my dosage. I only take 75mcg per day - I began with half that. None of my hypo symptoms have been resolved either. In the meantime, I will try your green tea and cinnamon suggestion. I love green tea and honey. Take care and keep going! you are doing so great!! [Julie]

Hi Jules, I was having trouble losing at first I have to take two of the same kind of pills you take .But i have been finding out from people not to take my calium until at least 4 hrs after my pills .People tell me it interfers with your medicine .Now as always you need to ask your dr about this but it has helped me .I now drink plenty of water take cinnamon in the morning and green tea.I now have lost 59 and a half pounds so try different things like that to rev yourself up.[ Kitty] thats my real name

Hi Everyone! I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 4 months ago. I take levothyroxin and have been dieting and exercising faithfully for 3 months now. I have only lost 6 pounds and am very discouraged. Does anyone out there have any ideas? I'm 46 so I know it's harder to get rid of the fat now but good grief! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
