Well, very recently only I came to know about this virgin coconut oil helping thyroid patients and I'm kinda surprised!
I was born and brought up in a place where we have a lots of coconut trees and coconut meat/water/oil are used a lot in our daily life. Oil is very good for skin and hair(people have beautiful skin & hair!). We make coconut oil at home. We also eat fish every single day!
Now when I look back... I find this surprising! When I moved to USA 8 years back, I totally stopped taking coconut products and sparingly ate fish! Within 6 months I started seeing all kinds of hypo symptoms!! First time when I went to the doctor she said my hormone levels are "fatally" low!
Little did I know about the good old coconut!! I have no experience in losing weight using it but then again I haven't used coconut oil ever since I became hypothyroid! I should try it out!

I know people who have lost weight with coconut oil, but they used 3TBS a day (not in addition, it was the only fat they used). I do not know anyone who has lost it using less than 3TBS daily.
I use it periodically for cooking - if I enjoyed the taste of coconut I would use it all the time as it is great in place of butter for almost anything you can think of. I use VCO from Spectrum when I do buy it.
Most people never get past their first wind to know they have a second.
I can not take statins, so I too needed to get my cholesterol down. I read the research, choose to try the virgin coconut oil. Had already taken trans fats out before it even became mandatory to seperate it out on labels. All I know is my body responded, I take the VCO capsules and my cholesterol went down 10 points in about 6 months.
Again, I say you must do what you feel is right, if you have confidence in what your doctor says and it has worked for you, fine, great even, I am glad for you. But, for me I read the research and even the governments own research tells us that VCO is not the bad thing once thought. As far as palm oil in microwave popcorn, well I have no clue as to how contaminated it might be. I suspect to make it a solid until heated by the microwave, puts it right back on the par with trans fats. At least that would be my guess, hence we no longer eat microwave popcorn.
I am glad you have confidence in your doctor, I would rather do the research and make up my mind for myself based on what I have experienced. My exerience with doctors is less than sterling.

In April 2006 my bad cholesterol was 279, and my weight was 206, I am only 5'3", so you can imagine, I was basically round..LOL
I have really changed my ways, with my doctor's guidance, I did not want to take Vytorin, so I had to really, really work extra hard to get my numbers down. I ultra complied with doctors guidelines, I had just lost my Dad to cancer, and was feeling my mortality. That cut out microwave popcorn entirely for me, it has palm oil in it. I am so used to he guidelines now, it is habit.
I have read where coconut oil is not the bad cholesterol poison that it was once beleived to be. Since I have been taking coconut oil capsules for several months and my bad cholesterol went down, well, it might not have brought it down, but it did not make it go higher.
Just my opinion, you of course have to do what your doctor tells you!

My cholesterol is a problem. My doctor specifically said that I cannot consume coconut in any form, nor palm oil, no tropical oil, period. I can still enjoy coconut oil lotions and creams.
I love the smell of real coconut oil. I have spent some time in Central and South America, where people cut fresh coconuts daily, make their own oil, and use it in their daily diet. They also do not eat at McDonald's, their entire lifestyle is completely different from ours. They get a tremendous amount of exercise from daily life, and from what I observed, ate a diet that was pretty high in fat (natural, meat milk, etc) and sugar is really popular too (again, natural, raw sugar, plus soda). Lots of starch, rice, corn and potato-like root vegetables (yuca).
It is hard to compare fairly. We would *NEVER* give birth, then immediately walk up a mountain to cut rice, and carry it down a mud trail on our backs in this country. Many women of Central and South America (not the city girls) do this routinely. The men also work very hard, it is just a harder life there.
It also has anti-viral properties.
Americans spend less than 10% of their discretionary income on food - the least of any developed nation. How much is the quality of what you put in your and your family's bodies worth to you?

I have heard both sides to the story, does it really work, who knows. All one can do is get it and try it to see if is will really work for you. My oldest daughter tried it and lost some weight, but was it the VCO, or did she change her eating habits??????

I battled weight for 30 yrs I had my DR change my meds to Armour and have lost 20# I need to up the meds but don't have an appointment till March 12 I'm sure she will do that sense she dosn't know enough about thyroid I have to educate her. I don't know about coconut oil some of the girls like it and I'm sure they will tell you about it
I don't know about the coconut oil. Really, I have never heard of it before now. The diet pills and most diets do not work for thyroid people! If you look at the package it will tell you not to take it if you have thyroid dsease. I have been battleing mine for 23 years and have gained more than 120 pounds. Hang in there! You can make it don't give up hope.
Hello, just would like to know if virgin coconut oil really does help people with Hypothyroidism. I've had this dumb disease for 13 years...never had a weight problem until I was diagnosed and now I am overweight and miserable. I've tried a million different diet pills, diets..etc, and nothing is working.
