That is a beautiful song.

My name is Jewell.

What about the NJ State Song written by Red Mascara. I'm not sure that it's official, but it's still fun!

I know of a state that's a perfect playland with white sandy beaches by the sea;
With fun-filled mountains, lakes and parks, and folks with hospitality;
With historic towns where battles were fought, and presidents have made their home;
It's called New Jersey, and I toast and tout it wherever I may roam. 'Cause . . .

First Chorus
I'M FROM NEW JERSEY and I'm proud about it, I love the Garden State.
I'M FROM NEW JERSEY and I want to shout it, I think it's simply great.
All of the other states throughout the nation may mean a lot to some;
But I wouldn't want another, Jersey is like no other, I'm glad that's where I'm from.

Second Chorus
If you want glamour, try Atlantic City or Wildwood by the sea;
Then there is Trenton, Princeton, and Fort Monmouth, they all made history.
Each little town has got that certain something, from High Point to Cape May;
And some place like Mantoloking, Phillipsburg, or Hoboken will steal your heart away

My mom & Aunt sang a song all the time called "ON THE WAY TO CAPE MAY". The late Al Albert sang it.

I started losing weight when I stopped stuffing my face and started facing my stuff. ???

A good friend of mine has a great CD out with a few songs about NJ on it. His name is Roger Gardella and the CD is Thanksgiving Day.

The title track, Thanksgiving Day, talks about being on the banks of the mighty Raritan.

And then there is Lost in Sussex.

By the way, LOVE THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY BOOGIE!!

If you're looking for something newer, my band, Calamity Menagerie, www.myspace.com/calamitymenagerie has some songs up. Kind of new wave, Oingo Boingo-ish.

[/shameless self promotion]

I met Dez in Newark Airport dropping off a friend. He was helping an old lady get over her fear of flying. Wish I'd brought something autographable at the time...

How about the Misfits from Lodi, NJ. I went to see their most famous member Glenn Danzig at Starland Ballroom in South Amboy.

I checked wikipedia and one of the founding members is from Montclair. Another interesting tidbit is that the furniture store can be seen in The Sopranos episode "Another Toothpick".

The bio on their website says that they got the name of the band from the famous garden furniture store in Wayne, which I passed by many times, but I was under the impression that they were from Long Island. That said, many of their songs are about NJ, but LI as well.

My favorite is their song entitled "Hackensack"

Somehow that name is familiar. Who are they? When were they around? Did they have any hits? If so, what?

I love playing Jersey geography.

I was very surprised to find out that "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (sung by the Monkees and released circa 1967) was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin (her husband at the time) while they were living in West Orange. The name was inspired by Pleasant Valley Way (exit 7 on I-280). It is not a flattering song, but it is catchy.

I like to collect songs written about NJ, or by NJ artists. We all know about Queen Latifa and Bruce Springsteen, but what about the more obscure music from the Garden State. Here are a few to get us started:

The Gaslight Anthem - "The Navesink Banks"
Peter Vash - "Newark to Perth Amboy"

Does not matter what genre.
