101BERNI Everyone wants to travel to Ireland that I know .... but they do forget that the temperatures there are not the same as in the states. That it never gets too hot there and that a lot of rain and humidity is a constant. So thank you for bringing that up...it's always a plus to know that a light jacket should be used even in the warmest of expected weather. Especially with the wind coming off the water there it can get pretty chilly when you are not use to it.

I am hoping to travel to Cork County shortly here but time is flying so quickly and so much comes up I have not really set any dates yet. Thanks for the traveling and sight seeing information. I will take notes.

Hugs

Just reading through older post and someone wanted to know when, where and what to do in Ireland.

Firstly:there are 5 airports in Ireland.
Dublin,Belfast, cork and waterford and knock in mayo
Secondly: you can never depend on the weather here. He don't have freezing cold winters and warm summers. We have cold wet windy winters,
wet cold and winder spring,
warm,wet,windy,cold summers,
cold, wet dark winters Autumn
. It's now the first of June and today it rain rain rain .next week it might be sunny for 1-2 days

I wear a jacket normally all year round unless it's extremely hot. I'm very pale so I would burn easily. As soon as we get the sun im covered in freckles.
I have found that the evening are nicer than midday the past week or so.
Today is 7-10 degrees. I don't know if we will get up a good summer which would be 20degees maxfor approx 1-2 weeks then the weather changes.very unprodictuble
Dublin is the capital as you know, if you want to the visit city and do some shopping or sight seeing Dublin has plenty to offer. Guinness warehouse, museums, zoo and much more.
if you want to see a more scenic ireland kilarney co.Kerry is a lovely place to visit you get to see all the lakes and complete the ring of Kerry. It's really lovely very beautiful and relaxing place, its one of my favourite places to visit. Ireland also has some beautiful remote beaches but bring a jacket!!
Clare is also nice you can visit the burren caves and cliffs of moher. Galway for the races and there does be a lovely Christmas Market there. Cork is nice to visit to its the biggest county in Ireland so their is a lot to do and see kinsale is renown for its beauty.
Wexford is another place it has nice beaches hook light house on the peninsula and its another nice place to visit its nicked the sunny south east. Mayo is nice too very scenic you can visit knock which Is a holy pilgrimage.
I'm from the royal county myself I'm not to far from new grange which is a must for the winter soiles where the Sun shine into the tomb. I think it only happens twice a year. The hill of Tara isn't far that's where st Patrick banished all the snakes and where the high kings lived. There are a few gealtach areas in Ireland,- meath,Waterford,Donegal, mayo and Kerry. Where the communities speak only geailge. I am not fluent but I have some irish . Every child learns irish in their curriculum in school. Irish is a small island but big in culture I wish you happy travels if you decide to visit . P.s my husband's ancesters also comes from co cork originally that's where the Vikings where so a lot of Irish men woukd have black/ Brown hair but a red/ginger beard. It's the Vikings in them lol
I hope this information Is of use to you.

In dublin a lot of the girls was says thats massive or shes massive not meaning the person is fat/ heavy it means Georgous or fab!! Another saying is Bimbo speaking rudely about a woman with dyed blond hair. Muppet is rude word about a man. Be littler him.

The Irish Vernacular - Idioms and Phrases

When in Ireland you will hear people speaking Irish. Occasionally at least, less than one percent of the population use the "native tongue" on a day-to-day basis. So how do people actually communicate?

The majority use the "Irish vernacular", a local version of English, often called Hiberno-English (though this might be too academic a term). Influenced by tradition, local idioms, and the Irish language. And at times very confusing for the visitor.

Here are some examples of what you might encounter:

Are you Okay?
This is the universal greeting of the sales assistant or bartender. He or she is absolutely not interested in your health or well-being. The phrase translates as "I am ready to serve you, what is your desire?" The correct answer is to place your order, not to detail your ailments. Note that the phrase might be uttered in such a tone of voice that "How dare you to disturb me?" could be a valid translation too.

Blow-in
A stranger or foreigner, basically anybody whose ancestors have not lived within sight of the parish church for at least ten generations.

Come here!
If the person saying this is already next to you, you might feel that the concept of personal space is unknown in Ireland. Don’t worry, the phrase simply means "listen up".

Culchie
An abbreviation of "agricultural" and referring to anybody born and bred outside the few cities of Ireland. Or outside of Dublin.

Deadly
In everyday conversation this means "very good", like in deadly buzz (roughly "a great time").

Any Description of Distances, Directions and Time
The "Irish mile" is very flexible. And time is fluid. While you may expect to cover three to four miles walking at home, this will not apply in Ireland. Especially if you have to rely on directions given by locals. They might play down the distance to avoid discouraging walkers, send the same walkers on the "scenic route" or throw in helpful hints like "turn left where the dog usually sits".

Feck
This universal qualification of anything ("the fecking yoke yer man gave me") is neither positive nor negative, it simply is. This Zen-like quality can disappear quickly, in which case the "e" is usually replaced by a "u". Expect to hear the f-word more often in short, seemingly normal conversation than in a Tarantino movie.

Good man yourself!
A phrase denoting agreement or thanks and a bit of respect. Also used as a sort of non-sequitur reply to the ubiquitous greeting "A'right?" (the short form of "How are you?", see below).

Hole in the Wall
Unless specifically referring to the longest pub in Ireland this phrase denotes an ATM.

How are you?
Unless the person asking you is a doctor, nurse or paramedic this simply means "Hello!" Do not start any long sentences. Just reply with the same phrase or the common "And yourself?"

Jeanie Mac!
An expression roughly equivalent to the quite common formula "Jesus, Mary, Joseph and all the Holy Martyrs!", avoiding to use the Lord's name in vain.

Knacker
Usually this word describes a member of the traveling community. It is definitely insulting.

Sambo
A sandwich and a good example of the (mainly Dublin) tendency to let words mutate into something ending with "o". Up to and including crimbo - Christmas to you and me.

Shinner
Derogatory term for Republicans and Nationalists, specifically members and supporters of Sinn Fein.

Skanger
All-encompassing description of Irish youths cultivating a certain look. Males will sport near-shaven heads, tracksuits, trainers, baseball caps and gold chains around their neck. Females go in for long hair, enormous hooped earrings, a bare midriff and a push-up bra.

Snogging
Prolonged kissing, also known (especially in Dublin) as shifting.

Soft old day
The Irish way of avoiding any mention of bad weather, even if it pouring down in force ten gales it will still be "a soft old day" (at least in the pub). It is an Irish weather thing ...

Sure
Even if uttered with utmost conviction, this will always remain interpretable as meaning only "within the realms of possibility" (see also "Yes" and "No" below).

Take care!
This usually means "Goodbye", unless a total stranger shouts it in your direction. In which case it may be taken literally or it's goodbye to you.

Take the weight of your legs
Not a subtle hint to read up on diets but simply the offer to sit down.

West-Brit
Derogatory term for any Irish citizens too fixated on British culture, traditions or political views.

What's the craic?
This does not refer to the ceol agus craic but simply translates as "Any news?" or simply "Hello!

Woah?
This almost universally heard word, drawn out to last at least two seconds, is roughly translated as "Excuse me, I did not quite get that, could you please repeat what you just said?"

Yer Man or Woman
Denotes a person whose name is unknown (or cannot currently be recalled) but whose identity is assumed to be known to everyone. Could lead to such hilarious exchanges as
"Didn't I see yer man in town yesterday?"
"That wasn't him, that was the other one ..."

Yes and No
Irish does not really have a definite "yes", neither a final "no". This explains the abhorrence with which the use of these words is treated. They are avoided as far as possible. Only if pressed a clear answer might be given - the implication always being that both "yes" and "no" are in a state of flux and synonymous with "well, maybe, we'll see".

Yoke
A mechanical or other implement, anything from a spade to a nuclear device.
Important note - take all explanations with a tiny grain of salt!

GOOD LUCK WITH TRAVELING

Tús maith leath na hoibre - A good start is half the work.

I like this saying and use it a lot. (I usually just say, 'Tús maith . . .') It's so true that, if we get a good start at something, it doesn't take as long to do as we had thought. Actually, even just getting started at all is often the worst part of a job and, once you get started, you wonder why you put it off for so long!

May your feet never sweat,

Irish joke back @ ya:

Paddy was taking a walk in the country. In a field he noticed something that intrigued him. Why doesn't this cow have any horns? He asked the local farmer."Well sir, cattle can do damage with their horns so we usually keep them trimmed down with a hacksaw. You can also treat young calves so their horns never grow. And some breeds don't have any horns at all," the farmer replied. The farmer continued, "But this cow doesn't have any horns because it is a horse!"

I've heard this at many of weddings.

Here's to your roof,
may it be well thatched
And here's to all
under it -
May they be
well matched.

I do know what you mean about being here for weight loss but wanting to have some fun along the way. Goodness knows, trying to lose weight is difficult enough without making it ever more boring! I was just saying that the lack of all things Irish is probably because it's not really something we do. I'm a member of a site called The Session, which discusses Irish trad. music, and that's where I go to discuss Irish music or get information. It's hard to explain. We just don't tend to talk about our Irishness out of context, if you see what I mean. But I, or I'm sure anyone else on here, would be perfectly happy to tell you what you need to know.

I'm not terribly familiar with Celtic Woman or Celtic Thunder. I had never heard of them till I lived in the States a few years ago, but I just never seemed to get around to listening to them. I did hear Cara Dillon on the radio one day, promoting a CD of lullabies that she's recorded. I thought I should check it out and perhaps buy it for my new grandson (showing off now:)) but I forgot, so I'm grateful to you for the reminder.

I'm off now to aquarobics, for the first time ever. Today is my birthday, so it feels like a new beginning for me. Actually, this is probably not the appropriate thread to talk about that, so I'll shut up and write later on a more appropriate subject.

Rue,
It's good to see you here....and thanks for the information. Any little bit I can get will help me or at least give me more knowledge first hand. I feel bad that you think I made that quote perhaps...I should have said it differently. In fact I was offering quotes that I had either known from an earlier time or ones that I have found. I in no way would assume to think that Paul McGuinness and U2 are the fairest of the land. As great as they are.

As a matter of fact my favorite groups are Celtic Thunder and Celtic Women, which both I would prefer to hear at any given time. Not coming from Ireland I find myself amazed at others that do. I love the whole culture be it in the North or South. I am not partial to any religion when it comes to respect. Therefore it allows me to enjoy all of Ireland. As I said in some previous text...I am an American with an Irish heritage and would love just to know more about anything Irish. I'm a little old for U2 although I have enjoyed much of their music I am not an avid fan. I love Bono's soul much more and his kindness and giving humane nature. I also enjoy Irish Actors...Liam Neeson (Personal Favorite) Peter O-Toole, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Stuart Townsend and a whole string of others. I could make a list of the great actors that have come out of Ireland. I grew up with the likes of Richard Harris as my Irish hero after he played King Arthur back in the 60's.
I understand that we are all here to either lose weight or to get healthier, but that does not mean we cannot enjoy ourselves and meet new people along the way. I find that sharing thoughts, plans, and just conversation is a great way to relieve stress. At times I have to confess it has caused a bit of stress, but nothing I cannot live with. My reason to come to a team...is to meet others with my interest and goals not to stand back and not get involved. Then again I have always been an active get involved kind of woman. Willing to take that extra step. So...here goes...a few questions that someone might answer.
1. The weather...it's always nice to start a conversation with how's the weather. In this case...when traveling from American when is the best time of year to travel and to see Ireland on foot or motor car. I do not like extreme cold and weather that will put a chill in my bones while I am out and about. I am assuming that the wind there is stronger at certain times of the year...or maybe the day.
As I am thinking of traveling there with my grandson very soon, I am hoping to get to know a few people that will guide me as to where to go to see the real (not tourist) attractions. I want to take two months and just start out at an airport somewhere and get a rent a car...and set out to discover. Small villages, back roads (that are safe), places to stay rather than a big hotel..I prefer to rent a small cottage and spend one to two weeks at a time getting to know the land and area. As family which I do not know...but family come from the south CORK...I would think that is a good starting place, but I could be wrong and find out that it's not. Maybe Belfast or Dublin is more entertaining. I want to the country side maybe get some waking in....so weather is a big deal for me. I am an old woman, not dead but old enough not to enjoy the cold, over heat or rain, snow. I get enough of that at home.

What part of Ireland are you from, and do you enjoy it?
Do you speak with that lovely accent that the Irish do? Can you tell the difference from the north language to the south. Like we here in the states...have so many dialects.

Joanna

Having said, in my previous post, that forum members would be happy to answer any questions about Ireland, I thought I'd give a little bit of info about the music industry.

Quote - "I think Paul McGuinness and U2 created the Irish music industry. It certainly wasn't there before that."

Ouch! I imagine that all the amazing Irish musicians who came before U2 would be very offended by that remark. And I'm sure many of U2's contemporaries would also have something to say about it.

I suppose what you mean is that, up until U2 came along, you had no interest in any other Irish musicians. This, I'm sure, is understandable. The rest of the world has its own music and perhaps you didn't have much chance to hear any music outside your own culture. I imagine, however, that you might have heard of people like Van Morrison, Rory Gallagher - who Jimi Hendrix claimed was the greatest guitar player in the world - Chris De Burgh, Thin Lizzy, Boomtown Rats, Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, to name but a few. They, of course, were global successes, but I don't mean to undermine the wonderful musicians who weren't successful outside Europe, and perhaps Japan. Many who didn't make the transition across the ocean were still incredibly talented and successful this side of the Atlantic.

In Ireland we're very proud of our musical heritage, and of how it has had such a major influence on music throughout the world. For instance, Irish and Scottish settlers in the Appalachian mountains had a big influence on what was to become Country Music. Not to mention the influence Irish artists had on the folk music revival of the 60s.

One of the most popular songs of recent years in the US, 'You Raise Me Up,' was written by Norway's Rolf Lovland and Ireland's Brendan Graham. It was first performed and recorded by Irish singer, Brian Kennedy. It has really been a global phenomenon, having been covered by well over one hundred bands and artists.

In any town in Ireland you can hear free, live music any night of the week. Walk down any main street on a Saturday, (and often during the week, especially in summer), and you will hear live, open-air music on every street corner. This is the raw, untapped talent that is the future of the music industry in Ireland.

So, there you are. Just a wee bit of information about the amazing Irish music scene. This, of course, just scrapes the surface of rock and pop. Don't get me started on all the other genres of music that are alive and well in Ireland.

Hi people,

I've had a few weeks of sporadic internet connectivity but hopefully, now, I'll be a bit more active, in more ways than one:)

Joanna, I'd just like to reply to one of your posts. You said, 'I am kind of sad I do not see Irish content in here. It would be such a sharing and learning experience at the same time.'

I suppose the reason for that is that we are on this site because we want to lose weight and get fit. We don't tend to talk much about our Irishness or our traditions in non-specific forums. We just live our lives in a normal way, pretty much the same as everyone else, without thinking about nationality, tradition, culture, etc. But if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'm sure someone will be happy to answer you:)

I was confused by your comment, 'It's pretty sad when you have to choose between the lesser of two evils.' What two evils were you referring to? Perhaps I missed an earlier post. I'm looking forward to hearing more about that.

Geraldine,

I too am hoping for close to 100 all together. If I get down to 200 I would be happy. I'm tall so I carry weight pretty well, but it still drags my energy down and slows me so I am not feeling as chipper as I would like. I just came back after a long break...and plan to exercise everyday and follow my food intake. I am hanging in there but like you it just started so I guess only time will tell. I also live in a small town, no I live in the outskirts of the town in the country side but still in the township. We have about 3000 in our town with new people moving in all the time.
I am in my 60's so I am hoping to enjoy the vacation with my grandson. I just last night booked us to go to Las Vegas for a short two week get away.....into the warm weather.

OLD SAYING - another one my grand would say ...was
"make hay while the sun shined" I think she hit me up with this when she wanted me to finish my work or something. Or we had things to do. Anyway I truly loved her and her quirky little ways.

My aunt done the same thing for her grandson when he finished school, and it was great to see them. that was about 6 or 7 years ago, she is 90 in may emoticon they come from Cincinnati. She was a GI bride that's how she ended up in America many years ago..Cork is about 150 km's from where I live. Our Tipperary Rose 2008 was a Kelly (she was from Roscrea) she went on to win the Rose of Tralee that year emoticon
I also have only one sister, we both live in the same town,Its called Roscrea (hence the name!!) our town is small, population of around 5,000. How are u doing on your spark plan? I'm aiming for 100 lbs in two years? but only started this week emoticon long road ahead of me!

May your day be touched
by a bit of Irish luck,
brightened by a song in your heart,
and warmed by the smiles
of the people you love.

She and my grandfather was both from Ireland. I am not sure what her exact location was but he was from Cork....a Sheehan - she was a Kelly. She never spoke much of Ireland and I lost her when I was 20, well really a few years before that for she was long past her prime and didn't know what she was saying anyway. I think I was in my early teens the last time I can really recall her making much sense. She did have a lot of laughter in her. My grandfather and she divorced and he moved on to remarry in another state. She was so angry and never remarried that she never spoke of him.

My father reconnected with him shortly before his death but me personally I never had a chance to meet him. I have one sister...and we always wanted to go to Ireland and see where our family came from. We love the whole ideal of having family on foreign land. Well in this case I guess we are the ones on foreign land. I never made it there yet but plan to go there this coming summer with my grandson. He has always wanted to go and I promised him that when he graduated I would take him...so this summer it is. We are both excited to be making the trip.

I remember my Father saying that also, what part of Ireland did your Grandmother come from?

Love that saying also, but have to say I cant pick a favorite? I also love the old words that my parents used emoticon

Geraldine, my grandmother always said it "Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to some bad end."

My favorite: "May you be a half an hour in heaven before the devil knows you're dead!"

Hi my name is Geraldine, I hail from Ireland and love the quaint proverbs and sayings emoticon

A face without freckles is like a sky without stars.

It is often that a person's mouth broke his nose.

A whistling woman or a crowing hen
will bring the devil out of his den.

I am excited about this Team so I am going to start it off with some good ole Irish sayings and quotes. Please jump in and add to them at any time.

The Celtic people established themselves in Ireland hundred years before the advent of Christ, and the island was dominated by them for almost 1000 years. Much of the essence of the Irish people's heritage still retains the Celtic influence at the core even today. Down-to-earth and full of wisdom, here are some famous Irish sayings that reveal the nature and ethos of the Irish people.

"The best looking glass is the eyes of a friend."

"A postponement till morning - A postponement forever."

"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

"A sly rogue is often in good dress."

"Constant company wears out its welcome."
