It sounds like your and my bringing in the New Year are similar. We never go out that night just to be safe...we do throw a small celebration for anyone of the kids or grand-kids that want to be here. As the kids grew up we would just celebrate with them.....but as they took on their own ways...we were designated babysitters.....and well now....we are just here.

That's great that you and DH will be together finally for the New Year. I hope it is a special celebration for other years too.
My DH is usually watching something on TV in the bedroom or living room and i'm on the computer in the den. It comes close to the ball coming down and we get together in the living room have a bite to eat while watching and kiss at midnight and go back to what we were doing.

I had a shepherd/husky, or shepsky as I called her once. Nicki was her name. She was a good dog. This was when I was young and still lived at home in an apartment over my parents downstairs. It was a big house and made into 2 apts.

After the death of our last dog, we decided not to get any more pets. it was too hard. She was special. Clancie, part spaniel and peke.....or pekaniel, as I call it.

I'm glad you made the right decision for your dog, to opt for longer life without the drug. That is great that you could wean your dog of her meds.

Sometimes when people are on meds for years, maybe they'd be better off without the daily routine the doctor's script out. I often wonder that with my mom. One doctor had her on some drug that was causing her problem. Glad we got a new doctor when she moved here.

You'll be glad to get the place all back to normal. Holidays really change things around, don't they? We didn't have room to put up a tree this year.

Have a Happy New Year.

I felt a crisp cold in the air when I went out today. I quite enjoyed it for some strange reason. I stood on the front deck and took a look around…..not liking what I was seeing though. So many leaves left over and the grounds kind of dug up from cars driving over it when it rains. Half my beautiful horse statue missing from the center of the garden. It was taken apart to keep if from damage and stored in the glass house. Remnants of debris that should have been either removed or fixed before winter. All in all not my winter wonderland at all.

As for me I am trying to come up with my New Year resolution list. I don’t want to make it a long one but perhaps an interesting one. Obtainable goals that I can keep up with rather than a few weeks into the year realizing I am not doing them at all. I can say this with honesty for it has happen year after year. I set all these wonderful goals and before spring they are just passing thoughts.

My dog is lying here comfortable at my feet just waiting for me to move. She has turned out to be quite a creature of comfort. Being a husky you would think she would love the cold weather but no she like all my short haired dogs prefers the comfort of a warm house and even likes watching the fire. My worse regret with getting her is the hair that she sheds. OMG does she shed. Better now than when we first got her but still she leaves a white path where ever she goes. As for her medical condition I hope we have accomplished the impossible and she is over it if not at least through the worst of it. She was an epileptic and went into many secures the first year we brought her home. She was in and out of the doctor’s office along with being on medication. I was told that most likely she would be on meds for life. Yet after a couple of years….we started weaning her off it. The meds were shortening her life even though they were saving it. If she continued to take it she would lose a few months a year until the end, cheating her out of life. So I started testing it and cutting back on the meds. With a few errors and mistakes I have now gotten her off the meds and no sign of a secure for over a year and a half.

Unfortunately she cannot run free like the rest of the dogs and experience the same freedom they do, but I think of it as she being a city dog and always having to be on a leash. I run her during the weather that is permitted on a 20 foot leash and using a golf cart over the fields and hills which all the dogs seem to follow in tow. So she does enjoy it to that extent. She has to be walked on a leash to go do her business or if in the middle of the night she is let out on the back deck. My sister has so graciously volunteered to be her walker since she also takes her own dog on a leash. All in all its working out for the better. She is a happy content dog and has found a place to fill out our hearts including hers. And oh my gosh is she a talker when she gets going. She gets very competitive with Simon the other big mouth in the house.

I am waiting on my hubby to get back home in time to celebrate the New Year…..can you believe that it’s been 38 years we have been together and not one year have we not been together for bringing in the New Year. Quite an accomplishment in today’s age of divorce and trade in. Hehehe….I can only say it takes a lot of work.

Ok am off now to the city to pick up family for a few days of visiting during Christmas break. Have a great weekend.

Those are great ideas. I don't get out much, but I have a treadmill.

My church is a dress down church. I like that because if people want to go to church and don't dress up clothes they don't have to be afraid to come to our church. Sometimes the pastor even wears jeans. I used to go on Saturday which I thought was the dress down service. When I had to start to go on Sunday, I wondered as I don't really have dress up clothes. The only skirts I have don't fit.

Our church has a food pantry. I don't know if other churches in other states have one or not. Not sure how many of our churches have one, but we do have a food pantry, not connected with any churches.

I'm lucky living in Florida, I don't have to worry about snow and cold. Ironic. You live in the cold/snow and like to get out and I don't care that much getting out and live in Florida.

Here is it the 21st of December and it's pretty cold outside but no snow or hard weather to keep me so I can't get out. This being said I sat down to figure out a good strategy for winter activity to keep me busy on the off days. I opened an article on SPARK 10 things you can do during winter. Unfortunately not one of them fit my bill. I can't Ice Skate, Sky, Snowboard, Go Sledding, or even do the Hiking they suggest without worry that I will end up worse off than I already am. I wish there were things that could be suggested for older people that have arthritis, disabilities and pretty much everything else rather than just concentrating on the healthy viewers. After all if I was in all that good of health I would not be here in the first place.

As much as I enjoy hiking during the fall and spring, the winter where I can not see the ground under me is not a safe bet. So I figured I would give it a shot and come up with a few things I feel I might be able to do and get away with it over winter. Not to mention get out and about. Here goes.

Visit the mall without Shopping....instead of walking around it how about I rent a scooter and just fly around it and enjoy the freedom of speed. ( Walk if you can of course)

Visit Barns & Noble....sit in a big comfy chair and catch up on some reading without having to buy the book. (It's cheating a little but oh so worth the trip.) If you have to spend buy a warm drink to enjoy while you read.

Spend the day at a museum and take the walking real slow so I can enjoy all the art and the talent that I would miss if not there to see. (Maybe take a friend to share the day with)

Volunteer at a local food bank that will keep me busy and active while I get to know some of my neighbors. If I schedule that just a couple of times a month it will be giving back which is always a plus in my book.

Visit a local animal shelter and volunteer....for me I will just stay home and go out to the barn. A few hours out there bending and brushing along with some hugs and treats will give me a good workout. I can do that a couple of times a week and not go out of my way.

Take my Husky that needs to be always on a leash...to the dog park and walk around it at a nice pace a couple of times a week. If all is well let her go and she can play with the other dogs for a while.

Get my butt in gear and start my mornings with some at home exercises....a few to get me going will not take to much time. Some stretches, a few with the bands I have installed at the wall, light leg work.....and of course build that core to help me get going. Don't leave the room until they are done...should be my motto. We are not talking 2 hours here just 15 to 20 minutes will suffice.

Dust all my furniture once a week...that right there will be a workout...I get a lot of dust here in the country side. For those of you in the city...Dust it more often like three times a week. Don't forget those dang nick-knacks - or clean out your dresser drawers. Good exercises and makes for more comfortable living.

Take a winter carriage ride all bundled up just for the fun of it...getting in and out of the carriage will be enough on a cold day. Bundle up warm....of course let someone else hook up the horses. My grandsons hook them up for me to pull the sled or the carriage I do handle the horses through and that is a bit of a workout on occasions. I always invite others over to enjoy it with me....I seldom go alone these days.

Hmmm One more!

Make a commitment to get out every Sunday and go to Church.....at least once if not twice daily. Find a church where it is not required for you to get dressed up and can be more casual. While there get involved with some interesting groups that will require you to be more active. Stay away from the clicks that can only leave you depressed and wear you out trying to belong to something they don't want you to belong to. Remember is not what they give you out of being there....it's what you get out of it. You should leave a church feeling you accomplished something and feeling good about yourself and life around you. If you don't after a couple of tries....FIND A NEW CHURCH. Remember that God helps those that help themselves and we all could use a little self help from time to time.

Hold my horses I think I am coming up with a plan.

Happy Holidays

Joanna

That sounds like great fun and a lot of work. Hay rides are fun. When I worked up north the office went on one and then cooked marshmellows over a bondfire. Sweet memories. I bet you have a lot of pictures of your farm and events. I can imagine the kids giggles having fun riding the pony ride. I don't think I've seen that around any more. I'm glad you're still doing it.

Have a Merry Christmas; I can't believe it is almost the end of the year.

Hey Court, glad you are all ready for Christmas. It's a nice Saturday here in Michigan. I just got back from Food Shopping...spent most of last night shopping and didn't make it home until Midnight....I am about worn out but thinking that at least I am getting in a lot of walking for my fitness logging. Our farm is always a busy place during the holidays for that matter most of the time. I do have lots of family and of course they all want to come to Grandmas house. We should have at least 23 to 30 here for the holidays. I put a pretty good Christmas Eve dinner together with left overs for Christmas Day. Most of the family will spend Christmas Day at home with their families but there is always a few that stay home over the weekend. We also open our home to the public for our Christmas Forest during the holidays.....and we have a haunted forest during October. We get somewhere between 2 and 4 thousand people that come through it each year to check out what's new.

We offer hay rides and buggy rides all day long from 12pm to 6pm and then from 8pm to 10pm in the evenings. Each ride takes about 30 minutes and we charge a 5.00 donation that goes to care for the rescued horses....for food and medical bills throughout the year. During October we offer the rides and a corn maze along with pony rides for the young kids. We give out donuts and cider and sell home made horseshoes that are decorated up in different little things from picture frames to coat hooks. All the shoes are used from the horses here on the property. We sell Hugs ( HELP US GIVE SANCTUARY) 2 Horses Tee Shirts and Sweat Shirt. Between that and hosting a ride-a-thon once a year is all the funds we raise for the rescue.....it gives us just over 50 % of our needs. The rest we donate from our personal income. No government financing or grants.

I don't mind the Hubby being away this is his second year of going to Thailand and he works so hard during the year to have him go off for a few weeks is nothing....he so deserves it. He would like me to go too and so would I but one of us has to stay here since its such a long time. I travel throughout the year for my work and pleasure so I elected to give up the trip to him.

As far as sleigh rides we only offer them in the snow....if the weather permits. Our lake and Pond is lit up and the kids Ice Skate on the Pond. Good wholesome winter outdoor fun.

Merry Xmas
Joanna

Wow, that is so great to do all that and in that way, so thoughtful. You will be so blessed by God.

I doubt that we put a tree up. It's buried in the garage somewhere. We have boxes in front of boxes and boxes on high shelves so instead of having DH with his poor feet have to stand and pull boxes down etc, I'll just use what we used last year and have boxed up in the house. Little knickknacks to lay about. We don't have very many people stop by.

Tonight I'm going with some friends from church to a night of music at the church.

I have been so busy during the holidays....oh boy did I have a house full for Thanksgiving. A total of 34 Family and Friends decided not only to come for dinner but stay for a couple of days. Trying to host so many is tiring to say the least. Now I am trying to get the Hubby on the road he leaves for Thailand with my son and his family for the next few weeks. They will be missing Christmas once again this year. Still I have many more that are just waiting on me to come up with the festivities.

Bad news I can't find my main Christmas Tree....I have searched everywhere and nothing to be found. I am not sure what I can do to replace it. I don't want a real tree as much as I enjoy the smell of it. I found 3 smaller trees that one might have to be used in place of it. I am missing a ton of decorations also. So sad....we have searched the entire property and can't seem to locate it. All my outside is done but so far nothing but containers are in the inside waiting on a tree for the main room.

As far as Christmas shopping goes I have barely done any and to make matters worse I hate crowds and I think I am hitting that time of year where there is nothing but crowds. The good news is that all the little kids under 10 are bought for and they are all that really matters. My older grandkids all like MONEY...makes it easy so they can buy their own and get what they want. I do try to buy a little something for each of them. As far as the kids....they all have family of their own so I think I am not going to buy for them.

It seems to me that over the years the cost of competing at Christmas has gotten out of control. So for the last few years.....my kids and I have changed it around and we try to pick a goal or project and work toward that. Last year we gave away 100 blankets to the homeless. This year we have picked 3 families that we feel might or could use our help not only on Christmas but throughout the year. So what will be doing is sending them an anonymous letter this year letting them know we are here and will be helping them out. We request at that time if they can to give us birthdays of all the children under the age of 10. I know there is a total of 7 children in the three families. We send each family a Christmas gift of 150.00 so they can buy gifts for the children or food if needed. Then starting in January we set it up through our bank to pay their electric and gas bills for the next year and help with any rent or house payments depending if anyone in the family has any income. We no longer send cash as we need to make certain the money goes to help the family. All they have to do is drop off the bills to the local bank we have set up for their use. The bank will submit a copy of the bill to our email and we will transfer the funds to pay the bills online. The reason we do it through the bank rather than sending them a check....is the fact that I feel people are proud and when they need help they don't want to be put into a position of having to say thank you every time they turn around. I don't want their children or them to be embarrassed if they happen to run into any of our family. So anonymous is a good way to go. It allows them to take and us to give without putting either of us in an uncomfortable position.

I love the ideal of sending cards to the children throughout the year congratulating them on good grades or jobs well done. We offer little goals that will help them try harder such as summer breaks to a local horse back riding camp, or a weekend trip to SPLASH universe. We've might supply the family with tickets to a live theater show geared toward kids. It all depends on how much money we can supply throughout the year and the needs of the family if they can get back and forth to such events.

You will be surprised how good you feel at the end of the day when you can do something for others. We as a family have decided to do this again this year because we have been lucky enough to stay together and help each other without to many bumps in the road.

Oh well there I go again blabbering on and on.

Have a great Holiday
Joanna

Hehe Court you did make me chuckle when I saw this. You are just too cute. I am sure we all have interesting things we can write down. It's like that old Dragnet saying there are a million people in the city and they all have a story. Making sure you don't wear the same things two and three times in a roll is very important.

Just keep lots of notes and one day down the road, you can start to draft out your stories. I started to keep a diary, but my life has no ....life, I write things down like what I wore to church, so I won't wear the same thing next week.

I was so afraid that you were going to say Jasmine died. I'd be in tears. I'm glad she is still going. We had a dog for almost 13 years, devastated when she died and haven't gotten another dog since.

I never thought about how much horses are like humans in some ways. Jasmine being lazy and getting you all to cater to her. That was funny. You should write a book about all your experience with horses.

Court - I am not sure how to answer that question on which is the easiest to train. Over my years I have broke so many different breeds that to say one breed is easier than another is not that simple. I use to prefer quarter horses, but in reality it didn't matter. The hardest horses to break were the ones with attitude and older horses that had not been taught manors at an early age. Kind of like a child. If you get them young and teach them right they pick it up...if you get a hard headed teenage that is use to their own way to get them to bend to yours is not that easy. But with patience and time I have found that in most cases they will come around. You just had to make them think it was their idea and not yours. I have had horses that I could get on their backs and just ask them lightly to move....and others that would flip over every time I went to mount them.

One of my most beautiful horses went through that flipping stage for years. You could just count on him flipping over like a ticking time bomb....yet to look at him he commanded an audience. We had to let him flip over and then he rode perfect and did so well in the show ring. When I would ride him down the road....I could feel when he was going to flip over so I would just let him and then remount and continue for hours of enjoyment out of his ride. His brother did the same thing...right up until they both died. Yet he was one of the most gentle horses I have ever had.

I had another one that you could ride anywhere at anytime. He would and could do any kind of riding from trails to the show ring and always in the blue ribbons...in everything. But, if you took him near water...he would go crazy and if you ask him to cross a puddle he would kill himself rather than cross...so you had to dismount him and walk him through with you going through first before he was sure it was safe. This resulted from him going into a lake as a baby it bottomed out on him and he went under ....and apparently never felt safe after that.

I had a big quarter horse mare....that was the best and most comfortable ride you could imagine she would do anything and nothing scared her...from steep mountain sides to crossing rivers. She could jump 6 feet up and 6 feet over without breaking a stride. Yet she was a power hungry mare...meaning she liked being boss. She was head mare of her group and if you tried to take her away from her group she could give you the ride of your life. She could rear and move on her back two legs like no other Horse I had ever known...maybe because she was such a strong jumper. She was not about to flip over and get dirty she was far to fussy about her grooming style. But she could rear and back up into ditches, lakes and river beds trying to get your off her back....and to fight her would only irritate her more. Unless you were an expert rider you would not want to be on her. I use to have so many people offer me tons of money for her....which i would never sell her. But, it was fun to watch them...I would say come out and ride her at my place and if you like the ride we will talk about money. Not once did anyone want her once they got on her back and tried to take her off the property away from her herd. They would come back walking saying she needed to be dog food or put down or all sort of silly things....never would they want her. She and I both just laughed at them...for me she was the best thing I could have. I taught my granddaughter to ride her and jump on her....but the granddaughter right up until my mare died would not ride her down the road. She would say...Gma Royal will kill me. Yet, me I took her all the time...I knew how to ride her and what to expect...and we understood each other....I took two falls off her in my entire life. One when I took her with a group of friends....we got to her spot and she started her rearing....I reached up to smack her upside the ear...and she dropped her head so fast I went over her neck to the ground.....I slid down her neck like a snake fast and quick...but I held her massive neck to help break my fall. She never moved she just stood there watching me.....most likely laughing at me...I remounted to all my friends surprise...and we continued without any problems. My friends were worried about me getting back on but me I was never worried even in the fall she knew if she did anything after that she was in trouble. After all I broke her I knew how to handle a temperamental mare (female) when it came to my girls.

I have so many stories through the years I could share...but none so simple as a little mare that I had...a quarter horse chestnut in color...when she was born....I gave her to my grandson as his first horse. Just a couple of days after I gave her to him...he was only 5 at the time....she got out and into a fresh field and ate the fresh grass....but unfortunately if a horse eats to much fresh grass they can get sick a couple of ways. She got sick and foundered. Her hooves (feet) swelled up and she was running a fever. My grandson went out to feed her the next morning and was crying because she could not be found. We did find her in the grass lying down....she could not stand on her feet. What happens is the feet get so hot they soften.....and with the swelling they feel like finger nails that have been bitten below the quick only 10 times worse. If the horse stands on them or walks they eventually soften and fall off and you have to put the horse down.

How do I tell my grandson I can not save his horse I thought to myself. My husband went and got the tractor and we put a belt around the baby horse she was only 6 months old. Used a chain to hoist her into the air and take her to a stall.....in there we had to hobble her feet together so she could not get up even if she wanted to. Which right now she didn't. I knew we had to get the temperature down and somehow keep her off those feet while they hardened back up. Then wish for the best that she would be able to walk on them. For the next few months...not weeks we kept her down. She got feed and water on the ground. I, my husband, and my oldest granddaughter would go in 6 to 8 times a day...hold buckets of water up for her to bend her neck and drink out of. We would put hay by her head and if she wiggled around...we would pick it up and move it to where her head was. It took almost 8 weeks to get the fever down....to a steady temperature and then we waited for the hooves to harden. After 3.5 months of brushing her and cleaning her stall and scooting her back and forth in a stall we removed the shackles for good. That mare took another month....to attempt to get up. She was so lazy and so babied she wanted us to cater to her and bring in her water. My granddaughter went in to clean the stall one day and found that her poop was closer to her head than her butt...Alexandra came running in saying I think Jasmine was up gma. I ran to the barn only to find her down and when I tried to get her to get up she balked and refused. So I said...best way to test it is to quite putting her food and water on the ground...put it up make her go after it. This mare loved to eat. It took almost a whole day before she finally realized that we were not coming back with the water buckets and food.....by the time the night was over she apparently got up to eat...the next morning when we went in to feed...she was standing there waiting on her food to be put into her bucket.

We babied her so much she thought she had some human instincts I guess. She did not like the other horses and no matter what she found a way out of the fences and into the back yard....she finished growing up in our backyard hanging out on the patio and lounging in the sun lying down. When it came time to break her at 3 years old...we cant break before that...the knees do not close on a horse until then or shortly after. She was the easiest horse I had ever broke...I did not do any ground work with her....just put my then 7 and a 1/2 years old grandson on her to walk around....she not once gave him a problem. The next day....we put a saddle on her....and with him in toll we set off down the road...with other horses. She went where he told her to go...and she never spooked or did anything wrong. For the next two years...she was the perfect horse for him....he took her on tons of trail rides....and since I was not comfortable with him on a fast horse she was perfect she never wanted to run let alone try to run off with him. As he got older....and rode so much better....he wanted faster horses but her speed was only one...walk and not to fast at that.

I took her back and gave him a different horse and decided to mount her myself and train her to move off my legs. By the time I was done she could walk, trot, and run on command....she did anything and everything I asked her for without giving me any problems what so ever. I think she just loved the fact that we gave her attention and trusted everything we (I) said....knowing she was safe with us. She is an old girl now and produced 3 fine foals of her own...which all turned out as strong and brave as she was....she has taught 100's of young riders and a few older ones how to ride properly and she has always been a horse of choice to go out on the trails for beginner riders. No surprises there.

They say Arabians are high strung and crazy and to hot to handle but next time I will tell you a story that is amazing about some of my Arabians. For now....its all about Jasmine.

Thanks for all the info. That had to break your heart to sell your horses, but for very important reason, for your kids and now look at what all you have!!! That is a wonderful life story.

I googled a pinto and thought it looked like Little Joe's horse. I don't know one from the other. Paint is what he had. It's a pretty horse. What is the easiest horse to train or for a beginner to ride?
It's great that the whole family rides. Makes a nice family get together adventure for a day. I'd loved to have seen the barrel races. I've seen some on tv.

I loved horses since I was a kid. I grew up in foster homes and one of the homes had an old pony that I got to ride once in a while. It stuck with me for years later when I was in my teens I would visit the mounted police and watch the practices in the local park from afar. I was spotted there after a long while by a police officer and he offered to let me ride his horse if I would come along and clean his stall and learn to groom him. I found out a police horse is the best kind of horse to learn on they are bomb proof. He gave me lessons over the next two years on and off and we became friends. I got married at age 18 just before I entered college, my husband was already an attorney just out of college and for a wedding present he bought me a pair of young Thoroughbreds - race horses. I was so excited I had a girlfriend that her parents had a small farm after they retired. They let me keep my two horses there. I would only get to go on the weekends but it was such a pleasure to get out and go there every Saturday and Sunday. I raised them from 5 months old until they were grown....I raised all my children to learn to ride them....In the late 60's and early 70's I would take off and travel around the states to barrel race. By the mid 70's my first husband died....and I had to give up traveling to raise all my young kids, but I was an attorney and we worked it all out. I had to sell the horses so I could devote my time to my children. In 1976 I remarried....and my husband which was new...decided he liked my country way and invested in horses that we boarded for a couple of years...I acquired 6 with him in our first 3 years of marriage. He being a contractor and engineer decided to build me a barn that would house my horses...so we invested in land and built a barn first then a house. Way before the house was built I filled the barn to the max with horses. I had 18 horses before I had a home. Once the house was built I left the city life and moved to the country. Since we have been married we have moved into three homes ...the city one, the small country farm and now ...our second country home which I have been here just a little over 20 years now. We lived in the first city home for two years while he built me a country home...which we lived in for 6 years and sold to buy more land and now here we are and that puts me married the second time around for 28 going on 29 years. Wow time flies when you are having fun. Trust me it was an up and down rocky road but we hung in there and raised all our kids....well my kids he and I never had any. We also raised 4 our the grand kids and guess what they all ride horses...boys and girls and most of their cousins. Everyone loves the horses.

And little Joe had a PAINT horse not a Pinto.....The pinto is a half breed....that has Arabian in it. Little Joe's horse was a Mustang...making it part of the PAINT family. Go figure where they came up with all that (hehe).

I hope that answers your question.

How did you get started with horses? You may have told us but I forget. Sounds like a lot of work. Do you have favorites like pets? I don't think I've ever ridden a horse. As a kid I was on a pony at one of these parks where they lead you around, it was fun though. Down the street from me is a barn with horses and sometimes we see them on the side roads walking along. I always like Little Joe's pinto.....at least I think it was a pinto. it was pretty.

Today was an all work and no play day with the horses. Groomed up 17 of them...cleaned out the feet...put in some thrush med just to keep it safe in case...I didn't spot anything but you never know where they are out in the fields. I clipped manes and braided and wrapped up tails until my fingers hurt. I bent over so much today and lifted such heavy feet I think I strained my stomach muscles. Hope I don't get a hernia. I forgot to put on a brace...and just felt like super-girl I guess, big mistake. I got all 17 of them wormed, now all I have left is to tackle the rest but that has to wait for another day.

On a good note I am feeling a little better today. I have started taking pain pills just to get through the day. My lower back and ankle seems to be getting worse as time goes by. I have been eating better or so I think....it doesn't seems to be doing anything for my weight. I don;t weigh myself but I do make assumptions and it sure doesn't seem to be falling off the weight that is.

I was taking advantage of the last of the good weather yesterday and decided to give one of the horses a bath. By the time I was finished my lower back hurt so bad. I had to tie her up to dry and was hoping to get back to braid her mane and tail but unfortunately I was not up to it so I am going back out today to finish her up.

I sit while working and oh my gosh it was so hard to get through the night. It was a pain to get up and down in and out of the chair before the night was over. I sure hope this is not an example of days to come as the weather get colder.

I plan to get to warmer weather but not until after January thus making it a miserable time while here. Enough with the negative side of life. Lets go for the positive. I have re-joined Planet Fitness hoping to make it a regular routine but so far I have not even made one visit. (hehe)

I did get my closet cleaned out. Deciding to donate 1/3 of the clothing to a good cause and packing away all the things I will not wear for the winter left me with a very clean and roomy closet. I put all the purses, shoes, and so forth away that I will not be using. I just hope I remember to open it in the spring before I go out buying new things. When I went into the attic I noticed a whole lot of things I put up there and forgot about. Decoration items for the house....that I have changed over time and stored away and forgot about. Out of sight out of mind is a true statement. My sister was overwhelmed...saying she could furnish two houses with all my junk. It's not junk but might as well be since I am not using it. I have some wonderful paintings....statues....table settings and just little nic-nacs that could be used..... Winter scenes for the colder weather....Spring scenes....well all weather scenes. I use to decorate my home given the season. There is a couple of wonderful pieces of wood furniture...I simply forgot about. We found a whole box of dog toys...that of course she decided to get out again. She has one little Boston Terrier what she wants with the complete box I have no ideal but we will see. She will be bending over picking them up not me.

Ok...time to go I wanted to check in and keep my running going...but I have many things to try to get done today. It's a rainy day but that doesn't keep me out of the barn and away from the horses. Love you all....take care today and enjoy life for as it goes....it's here today and gone tomorrow. We can't get it back to enjoy it while you can.

When it rains it pours or so they say. I am at a point where I can successfully say I have been through it all. To bring you into the loop of things let me start out by telling you a couple of facts. I live in a remote area of Michigan that apparently ATT, CAB LE companies, and the famous DTE ENERGY has over looked when it comes to making updates on their existing equipment or add any equipment at all when it comes to cable companies. With that say....if the wind blows the wrong way we are out of Electric. Now when you live in the country things are a little different. Good points and bad depending on which side of the fence you are sitting at the time. In this case it's always the wrong side, for everything in our home or on our farm depends on electricity to function. So when it's out we are back to mother nature more or less. No heat, no lights, and most of all no running water. Now out of all the things that can go wrong the number one most important is the Water because without water we can not function on many levels. No water to flush the toilets, no brushing teeth, no baths, no water to drink, and mostly in our case no water to give to the animals with horses being the number one issue. We can always go out and pick up a few gallons to drink and give to the smaller animals and use to get your teeth brushed. Still no showers though. We can walk down to the pond and bring up a few large buckets and sit it in the bathrooms to pour into the toilet bowls to flush temporary I suppose. But back to the horses again no water. So the next best thing is to have a generator to hook up to your home and with the help of a little bit of gas all is well so the saying goes.

In my case this is the weekend that it decided not to go so well in fact it has gone haywire. It started with Friday night the lights were flickering on and off then finally half the electric when out in the house but half stayed on...dim but on. No TV's it seems if you turned on a TV it blew the power out and with all the people in my house that was the first issue. They can't survive without the TV...so jumping around turning it off just to watch the circuit blow and then come back on did not give them a clue that something was wrong. I finally had to get upset and tell them to leave the Damn TV's off. Once off the lights came back on Dim but on....no heat all our wood burners and baseboard heat runs on electric. We could not hook the generator up it was the husbands night out. Another Friday night club night. So at 11 pm we all called it a night and curled up in bed. I text-ed Tom early the next morning telling him we were out of electricity and needed him home.

Home he came only to let me know there were more serious problems. It seemed that trying to hook the generator up would not work in this case. We were in trouble and it was only the tip of the iceberg. Update on farm life.....we have WELL water in the country. No city water out here because none of the utility companies want to run lines. Okay, so here is the deal and like I said a first for me. We have two power meters on our house. Both 110 lines coming from the transformer at the pole and then going to the main grid. That gives us 220 service which to run the major things in a house you need 220 like your refrigerators, stoves, washers, driers, heat, and of course the WELL pump. It seems one of the meters from going on and off all the time....over the years decided to short and actually melt against the house. Leaving us with only one meter and 110 services. Explains why we had a power issue. The 110 was not enough to function fully and so the main stuff shut down but the lights and smaller things continued at half power.

DTE Energy came out.....and they were a little shocked but preceded to repair the complete housing unit just outside the house and made sure there was no problem going to the transformer. He was very polite and did his job fully and we now are back up with full power. But, and there is always a but....this is what is the really kicker of the whole deal we are still without the number one item we need in this whole ordeal...W A T E R. We have none.....and it is really beginning to affect us. All my horses had to be turned out into the pastures where we have access to at least partial water. If we can not fix this quickly things will get really stinky around here. Not me...I am off to the granddaughters to have a shower and wash my hair. The rest have to feign for themselves. I am going to pick up some gallons of water for the dogs and maybe to try to get some water to do up the truck load of dishes. But we now have to dig up the WELL and fix the pump that blew during all this electrical problems. We think the power meter caused the pump motor to fry, but that is just an uneducated guess at the moment. In all the years we lived here we have never had a pump problem so this is a first for me to face. I have no ideal what the cost will be. I did ask about putting in a new well on a different area of the property the cost ran 5,000 and up depending on how deep they had to drill. I guess we will let that go and try to fix this now....but it all takes time and time is not on our side when it comes to water for the horses.....we go through about 125 gallons a day just so they can drink. There is no way we can carry that much in 5 gallon buckets back and forth from the lake or pond on a daily basis.

So here we go again for another great country adventure that I can add to my stories if I ever decided to write a book.

Court you make me smile...60's that's still warm for us up here in Michigan as you know. But, we are seeing the changes come fast and furious starting with the colors. I love getting out and just taking the time to look around. Nature in all its beauty is a wonder still to me after all these years.

Still I am not looking forward to facing a full Michigan weather. I am trying to make ends meet so I can slip away in January but as time goes by other things seem to be stepping up and calling for my attention.

I did do myself a favor and picked up a Sonata Hybrid. I get 40 to 45 miles per gallon on the fuel....such a break from my 14.8 miles in my big truck. I will save in gas what the car cost over a couple of years. I just wanted a Hybrid for so long....it's a little smaller than I would have liked but once in it I have plenty of head room so I am happy.

I hopefully am getting my computer back that went down....my son was able to put in a new hard drive and salvage he said maybe 1/3 of the old one that got fried in the storm. I just hope what is salvageable was the stuff worth saving. My grand daughter just announced yesterday that she is hoping to do three winter shows with her horses. We have never done the winter shows because living in Michigan is pretty hard to keep the horses clean and bathed during the cold. This will be a fun time....since I want to leave the state and she wants me to stay for the shows. See what I mean about things beyond my control coming along.

Anyway I have been up this morning, walked all the dogs....then went to the barn and fed and watered all the horses. I put in a good two hours of moving to get all that done. I am going to sit down here after I eat this bagel and tea to clip all the dogs toe nails. A couple of them are looking pretty scary.

Surprising my sister has turned out to be a big help to me this time around. She has been here over a month and not one argument or confrontation. I knew if she would give in and get on meds it would help and she is a really good person when she isn't being bi-polar or manic depressant. She has more than paid for her room and board by taking care of the laundry and keeping up on the main part of the house. This leaves me time to do so much more out of the house. To make her feel better and have something that she doesn't have to ask for I have just this week offered and started paying her a small salary. It's not much but then I am not rich either. It gives her some cash for Church, personal items, gas when she uses my car to go see her grandkids or kids, and what not. I feel that is only fair even though she is living here for nothing. I don't want her to feel like I am taking advantage of her.

The last time she was here........she stayed about 6 months before she walked out screaming...and everyone but me hoping she would just fall off the face of the earth. All my grandkids would argue with her and my daughter would get into a screaming match with her....my husband was ready to leave home......and I was the referee between everyone. I was told if I brought her back they would all give up on me and never come around.....well for an old lady that knows her kids....that was not going to happen and I hate to be told what I can and can't do by a bunch of grandkids....so I was leery of the drama.....but its worked out great and they are all talking to her and even saying nice things. I have been taking in my sister on and off since we were kids together....so I feel it was a must...this time she agreed that something was wrong with her and she agreed to give in and see a doctor which put her on medication and she gets to see a shrink a couple of times a month. She can vent to her and maybe she will finally come out with some balance. She gave up Drugs and Alcohol about 10 years ago and found Jesus....so we are all on the right page now.

Here I am venting.....good thing I don't have to pay for SHRINK when I can do it for free with all my SPARK friends.

Love you guys.

Joanna, I just read your computer problem on the Wall (I should pay more attention to the wall) that would be frustrating to find a fried computer, hope all is better. I usually use the same two passwords, bad to do I know and I keep usernames and passwords on a sheet of paper, also not good to do. If you find a secret to remember, let me know.

Rainy here, had a pour down early this morning but at least it isn't flooding in my area.

Joanna, sorry things aren't working out in the healthy routine. sometimes that is what we have to do, the 'me' time or what else makes it work to get to where you need to be. I know you can do it. Will you still be on SP while you are away? We should do some challenges on here, would that help in the meantime? I know I can use what I can get.

I know what you mean about going to a gym. We belonged to one once, but just to get dressed, drive there, workout , drive back home.....yeah, been there, done that.

But you are off to a good start recognizing that something needs to be done and working out a plan. One step at a time.

Maybe we can throw out some exercises to be done everyday, to just get something going. If there is anything the team can do to help, let us know.

I want to think I am doing just great but in reality I am not doing all that hot. I set all these wonderful plans and then somewhere down the line they get side stepped and my goals are not being met. I was so gun hoe on getting in shape after my accident. I was going to lose weight and do all my physical therapy so that I could get back on one of my horses. Here I am two years later and I am not better off then when I started. Yes I don't use a walker, or a wheelchair, no cane, and I seem to be getting around on my own. But, and there is always a but, I have lost no weight to speak of 10 lbs here and there maybe but over all it seems like I might have gained more back. I have memberships in several health clubs, Fitness USA, Planet Fitness, Snap, and even at the fitness center where I was doing my physical therapy. The problem is that I don't go. No matter which I chose I have to travel to get to them, and these days that seems like an ordeal. I have nobody to travel with me so there goes my workout buddy system that I was so hoping for. To make matters worse I live with two boys that love to eat in the middle of the night. I am so sick of food yet I eat when its in front of me. It's like I have no will power, yet I feel like I should be able to control it.

I am desperate to get in a healthier situation so I am thinking of leaving home for a few months...just to give me a break away from the routine here. I am not sure that will help me, but I am thinking it might. It might be my ticket to saving my life at this point in time. Winter is coming on and I hate to go out in the cold, my old bones are not what they use to be and all the breaks held together by screws and pins do not react to well to cold. This means I will not get out and drive to any destination unless its an emergency. I could say I will set up and do the exercising at home but I know that will fall through. I won't last long doing that it never works out for me like that. Someone or something requires my attention and therefore I worry about that and not myself.

I am thinking I need to be somewhere I can worry only about myself for a while. Not a week or two on a vacation but somewhere I can be that will seems normal and I can come up with a game plan to get not fit..for that is out of the question, just healthier. Lighter weight so I will not be so hard on my knees, and my damaged foot. So I can enjoy being out with my family and friends. Maybe ride a horse but that is not my main concern right now. If I manage to be able to just spend more time with the horses that will make me happy.

But, here we go with that but again, but, right now I need to sit down and seriously need to take another good long look at what is going on around me and make some changes. Small ones at first until we lead into winter than more serious ones. I am thinking of leaving for 3 to 4 months to travel to Las Vegas and become a snowbird for the winter. I have to wait until January at least the hubby is leaving with half the family to Thailand in December. So maybe January, February, and March I can get away to a warmer climate and nothing going on there that will take away from the ME time. It will be all about me...and getting better. Right now...I have to go back into therapy says my doctor because I am having difficulty walking again. She is putting me into water therapy which is not too bad to handle. I just hope I can stick to it. Running back and forth an hour each way every other day is not my ideal of quality time. I usually hold out for 4 or 5 weeks before I quit, this time I am going to give it the 12 week shot she is requesting, well at least that is my thought for now.

Wish me luck.

Oh no!! Hope that doesn't happen. Without my computer and TV, I'd be lost. We lost power last night, luckily it was around 11:00pm. I turned lights in the off position so they wouldn't be on when power restored, forgot the TV. Power came back on around 12:55am, because the TV came on. So....I got up and watched part of Seth Meyers show.

I woke up to a real chill in the air this morning. Burrrr too soon in the year for this. On another note...it's not about to blow away. I heard on the news that a vortex is bring in a cold front that will be history making. Cold enough to knock out our satellites...no cell phones, no computers, and worse no alarms working. Kind of scary all those alarms that rely on satellite to run. What will people do that spend all their time on Facebook , twitter, and the rest of the media garbage. Hehehe..might be a funny situation.

I am not looking forward to cold....and so soon in the year. This might even damage our final hay crop. I will just have to keep my fingers crossed.

I would love to go to Ireland with you Court...that would be something.

Glad to see you back Joanna, sorry you were so sick, hope you recover fuly. I do miss the change in seasons like the leaves, but not the snow and cold. A little cool weathr is nice, so to wear some of my jackets.
My, it is a busy month with all that going on. We have our 23rd wedding anniversary on the 14th and my b'day on the 17th, but other than that nothing except maybe a few doctor appts. haha

I think I'm finally getting serious about my exercise and eating or at leasting trying to do a better job now.

I found some 3-leaf clovers in the yard yesterday and picked a couple. I want to find a 4-leaf but so far no luck. I pressed the ones I found in a book and want to put them in lamination for a bookmark. Hopefully find the 4-leaf first.

It's been a while since I have made any major post in any of my teams. So I think I might as well sit down and try to catch up at once. Not that there is a lot to catch up on but you never know. Someone out there just might be sitting behind their computer asking what became of Joanna.

I've been sick really sick...with Allergies and a bad sinus cold. It settled in my lungs and turned into ammonia. I am on the upside of recovery now but it took almost a month to get me here. As most of you know I live in the country on a horse farm in Michigan. Just one week into September I can see the trees and landscape change colors. Beautiful gold and red is blossoming right in front of my eyes. The nights are getting cooler and some of my flowers are giving way already. I have one more of HAY to cut in order to have enough to feed all the horses over the winter. However if the sunshine doesn't stay warm enough to dry out the crop once it's cut I could lose the whole thing and be forced to go out and buy hay. I need sunshine and strong wind to help with the fields. I am keeping my fingers crossed. We already lost 1/2 of the second cutting because of the rain. I am so afraid that Winter is coming to early and it's planning on being a hard one.

On a good note walking or riding the trails are beautiful right now. I use a golf cart to run my dogs along the paths of our property and oh my how lovely the colors are looking. After spending two years and over 50,000.00 we can say we no longer have any wire fencing lest on the farm. We are the proud owners of brand new split rail hard wood fencing around all the pastures, arena and grounds. Whoopee!

Show season is over for us...for the year anyway. I am cleaning everything up and putting it in storage for next year. We plan to really go out next year...will be my last year with the girls together so we are going to really do some traveling with the horses. After that I leave it in the hands of he girls...for the traveling part. I will stick to watching the local shows and maybe the nationals if they qualify.

If's official my sister moved in with me...for the final time. If she leaves again that's it for my efforts. Right now it's nice having her. I made sure she went to see the doctor and is now on antidepressants for her bi-polar. She helps me out so much inside the house. She keeps it clean for me...and does all the laundry so just that makes her a treasure. We are a big house here and it takes a lot of work to stay on top of it.

I have a busy September, 4 family birthdays that I have to attend. My oldest grandson is getting married on the 27th, one of my granddaughters just bought her first home and is having a house warming party the week before. Living where I live means a lot of driving to get to all the different venues, but being a good parent and grandparent I will make sure I am there rain or shine.

Just wondering, what is your favorite way to spend the weekend if you didn't have work or errands etc to do and money no concern?

I think I'd like to go back to Kissimmee for thre weekend, to get away for a while and maybe go to a theme park in Orlando.

Hello, so what's new with everyone? I got my new hearing aids, not a big change but different. Sounds are a little more amplified. Cool.

I see Scotland is going through what parts of Ireland went through a while back and we went through, but a little differently since it was in the 1700s. Independence! Big decisions.

DH said he had a treat dessert for me later....Lemon Meringue Pie, yeah, not the healthiest.

Joanna, I saw something on TV about Toledo's water, something about algae, toxin or something. I had an aunt who used to live there. $30 for a 24-pack of water!!! Outrageous!!

California has flooding and fires, Hawaii has two hurricanes. I sure hope we don't get any hurrianes this year.
Earthquake in Africa and China. All of a sudden it seems like disastors all over the place.

Does Ireland get hurricanes?

Court I am doing a lot better, thank goodness. My truck is in the shop being repaired.

I sure agree with you when it comes to being active on the team. I think we would be doing great if everyone just came in once or twice a week. But I see all the new names and not on making any comments. Unfortunately it takes a little bit of commitment if you want something to work.

We have been getting a lot of rain. Some flooding in the area. Toledo Ohio is really in a pickle they have no drinking water or bathing water. Something happen to their water in Lake Erie and their processing plants can not filter it out. The stores are price gouging and charging as much as 30.00 for a 24 pack of water and believer it or not the stores are all out of water. The government is looking into the price gouging. I know my daughter in laws mother had to get water from up here....my son took it 10 cases of water at 2.00 a case. Scary if nothing else. That makes me happy to know I have my own water here in the wells. I heard they even tried to boil it but it was not good enough.

We need to get our hay cut again...this week if we can get some sun shine I am hoping for this cutting and maybe one more before the end of the season. Wish me luck.

Just think what a team we'd have if all the newbies posted. It's the same on other teams I'm on too. If it doesn't seem too active they leave, but if they'd stay it would be more active. (catch-22). I know I don't post as much as I should and not a good co-leader, sorry.
I do appreciate all who are on this team. I still hope the others will come back.

Hope everyone has a good week.

Joanna, how are you and your sister doing since the wreck?

Rua, what has been new with you, how's the weather in Ireland? It's our rainy season here in Florida.

Boy, to watch the news is really depressing with fires and flooding in California and other places flooding. News said earthquake in Africa and I think I read China had one?

No I was lucky and I agree I am almost afraid to leave my house right now. I think I need a tank to drive around to keep me safe. I do feel a little battered and bruised like I was thrown against the wall but other than that so far nothing too serious.

Waiting to get my truck fixed now.

I was taking my sister home a couple of days ago and pulled over into a turn lane with my blinker on to make a right turn onto a private street off a main one. While turning a security truck came along and hit me in the rear end and sent me 30 feet up on the pavement and crosswalk. It happen so fast I didn't have time to think, but once it was over I couldn't move. My head went back to the awful accident I had back in 2010 what shattered my leg in 17 different places. I was so grateful to be in my big FORD 350 if I was in a smaller vehicle I would have hated to see the damage it did.

I think I am ok, just beat up and battered a little and more shaken up than anything, but my truck needs to be put in the shop and my driving is put on hold. I am scared to get in a vehicle right now.

Can you imagine a taken like truck ramming you from behind. It's like "What were they thinking?"

It's been a long weekend and I am so tired, but ready for the new week I guess. I have tons of things on my agenda this week. The sad part is that time is going by so fast I am not really getting a chance to enjoy it.

Over here I see Sean a lot. Before I knew how it was pronounced I saw an actor Sean Bean. Well....I knew something wasn't right. Then I realized Sean was pronouced Shawn. I have seen Sean as Shawn, but not Shamus around my parts. Maybe somewhere else. I've never seen or head of anyone named Sinead except on TV.

I'd love to call my DH Seamus since his name is James, but nada. He doesn't even like the name Jamie, which is what his mom was going to call him.

I wish I could find a Caitlin in my family tree but I still can't find my Irish. Someone did going back to 1300s but I can't trace that far back so won't count that. I think I saw some mistakes in dates anyhow. I'll keep looking. I know it is an old name as Dylan Thomas' wife was called Caitlin.

I like that name Aoife (Eef-a)

I never knew that different languages pronounced letters differently until I studied German. I admire anyone who can learn our language.

Joanna, how's it going today?

I think the anglicisation thing usually occurs the other way - people change how the name is spelt, and pronounce it the same way. I have seen Shamus, Shawn, and Shinade. Some of them would sound very funny if their pronunciation was anglicised: -

See-mus
See-oh-ban
Sin-ee-ad
Say-o-erss-ee

I wonder how they would deal with Aoife, (pr. Eef-a), or Caoimhe, (pr. Kee-va).

I have an American friend who wanted to call his daughter Niamh, but his wife, while she liked the sound of the name, thought people in the US would be confused by the spelling. They compromised by registering the child as 'Niamh', but spelling it 'Neeve' for everyday life.

No, I don't have that key. I never heard of it. I found the alt and codes for the fadas etc when I was studying German.

I wish I could get those who call me Caitlin to use the correct pronouciaiton, after all, you never hear the name Sean pronounced like bean. I don't know how they decided to americanize it when they don't to other Irish names Like Seamus, Sinead (shin + aid), Saoirse (sear + sha) and Siobhan pronounced Shavon. Why Americanize Caitlin??? If I'd known in the beginning I'd have everyone say it like the Irish.
