You all know St Patrick Day is right around the corner...what better way to celebrate it than with a good Irish meal.

I am thinking for us it will be

Corn Beef and Cabbage with some Potatoes and Carrots added into it. An easy slow cooker day. Not to mention any left overs will make good corn beef hash the next day.

Begin with my Cheesy Hot Artichoke Spinach DIp...with some grilled bread pieces.

Key Lime Cheese Cake .........the true test here is to not over eat...but enjoy it enough to give you pleasure.

If we could just keep that memory alive while sitting a lot of our problems would be solved. I think we get to comfortable sitting around and yes I too do too much sitting and my backside is not only gaining but spreading. Hehehe. I am doing more walking these days through...which is a plus. I am not pain free yet and my ankle and lower right leg swells something awful but I try....and that is all I can do for now. Weather is a little bit better but I think I have caught a cold or sinus problem since I cam back. My nose just will not stop running and itching. I see the doc on the 20th so I do not have to wear green. I did something really strange I was on ebay and decided to buy a wig...just to ck it out and see what it would be like. Got it in the mail yesterday....put it on and the hubby thought I cut my hair he loved it.....when I told him it was a wig....he was surprised. I told him next time we have a date night I was going to wear it....he said cool...I'll have the blond bombshell at my side. Funny guy.

Need to get moving and see what is on the agenda for today....TGIF

Glad you are back Joanna. Sorry the plane trip was so hectic. You wonder why people don't train their kids to act better in public. I know it is important to give kids their space, but when it affects other around them..... Imagine what it is like in their homes!!!

St. Patrick's Day will be coming up soon, March 17. We have a doctor's appt so I want to be sure to wear green. I'm just sorry I can't fit into my fav St. P. Days shirt. Ugh, these hips!!! How did I let myself get this far off. I think my hips are bigger than ever. My fav pants still won't fit. I know part of my problem. I'm not putting in the exercise that I need. I'm sitting here working on SP teams or trying to study Spanish (which isn't going well) or doing my Bible class homework at home or sitting at church during the classes. Sunday, Wed and Friday I have one at a friend's house called Lifegroup. That's a lot of sitting. I just have to remember to keep squeezing the glutes while sitting. LOL

No Court I am back home in the cold weather of Michigan debating when to take off for Las Vegas to see my son. I loved the little time I was able to spend in the Sunshine, but am not sure the plane ride was worth the trip. The return trip home was overbooked and our seats were changed splitting my granddaughter and I up into two sections of the plane and unfortunately there were way to many young children out of control running around the plane. About 80% of the passengers are from India and it seems they feel freedom even in the middle of space is what bringing up kids is all about. Kids were throwing toys and food back and forth....they plane was trashed and a few passengers and kids did not take advantage of quiet and relaxed time. Over all I have to think about such a ride again.

Hehehe..sounds like I am complaining but trust me if you were put in there with no place to go....you would be doing the same thing.

I will post some pics on the main section though.

Love getting new recipes and especially Irish (and scottish, but that is hush hush)
Thanks for this recipe .....well, we don't have any whiskey in the house or any other kind of booze.

Are you in Dubai now Joanna?

PACEKA1, how are you doing? How's your weather? It was rainy here in Florida yesterday, but seems pretty nice now.
I still haven't found who or where my Irish ancestor came from, just my DNA to say I'm part Irish. someday, I'll find them. I know I'll never get to Ireland so I'll live it through everyone's stories and pictures.
I like your username. I take it you love potato chips too.

Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn I am sure you will do great at it in a short time.

Today I am making spaghetti. I have my sauce in the slow cooker simmering. It's been there all day long. I also have my bread in the frig rising waiting to be put in the over for some nice fresh garlic bread with the dinner.

I hate to cook and clean up the mess....but I can cook.

I have another good Irish recipe to hand out.

BREAD PUDDING

3 large eggs
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 tablespoons sugar
1/2 loaf stale white bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 tablespoons raisins
2 ounces Irish whiskey

Preheat the oven to 350F. Butter a 1-1/2-quart baking dish.

In a large bowl, Combine the eggs, milk, and sugar and stir until smooth. Fold in the bread, raisins, and whiskey and fold until well blended. Let the mixture stand for about 10 minutes or until the bread has absorbed most of the batter. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with small scoops of vanilla ice cream.

NOTE: Popular in Ireland especially at Christmas time, this bread pudding can be served anytime of year. Not only is it the absolute best use for stale bread, this recipe can be altered to suit any number of tastes. Chopped Nuts or fruit can be folded into the final batter then baked. Hazelnut liqueurs or Cointreau can also be substituted for the whiskey used here.

Thanks for the recipe. I"ll have to try it. Since I''m trying to cook now, I welcome all recipes. we've never made soup before. I may leave the mushrooms out though. Not too keen on those.

we're having some more colder weather, or rather colder for us in Florida.

I've been watching some Spanish TV shows and some dubbed. I'm trying to learn Spanish now.
I have a couple friends so want to surprise them.

I"m so tired so I may go to bed early. Tomorrow is Sunday School but won't stay for church as I went tonight with a friend.

Court that is just too cute.

Here is a good IRISH stew recipe for these cold months.

Ingredients Needed:

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 1/2 pounds boneless beef chuck roast, trimmed and cut into 1-inch chunks
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
2 (14 ½-ounce) cans Italian-style stewed tomatoes, undrained
1 (14-ounce) can ready-to-use beef broth
1 (4-ounce) can mushroom stems and pieces, undrained
3 large red potatoes, cut into large chunks
3 large carrots, cut into large chunks
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

What To Do:

In a large soup pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef and onion and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the beef is browned, stirring frequently.

Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 60 to 70 minutes, or until the meat is tender.

This is so easy but taste sooooo good when you come in out of the cold.

Enjoy
Joanna

Love your new profile picture. I should update mine, but I'll probably change my page for Valentines Day.

Wow, 27 cats. I wish I could give you the ones in our neighborhood. I feed the squirrels and the cats are my nemesis. I bet you don't have any rats!!

You have a very busy day today. How do you keep track of everything to do? I'd have to have a schedule posted.

I went to the foot doc with DH for his quarterly appt. He is diabetic so he has to keep his feet in good condition. He took another pair of shoes he had a question about, which I left at the office so we had to go back to get them. Then we went to the car wash so he could was the car. I helped dry. He is taking the car in for service tomorrow.

I tried my had at roasting veggies yesterday. I didn't know how hard it was going to be, but now that I've tried I may try again someday. Wasn't my best adventure. Needkess to say, cooking isn't my forte.

I'm also trying to study Spanish. I hope to someday spend some time with a Spanish friend of mine to have her help me understand a lot of things I'm having trouble with....like all of it. I have some Spanish channels on TV that I play in the background while on the PC. I might catch a word I know every now and then.

We have had some cooler weather and more to come, but it does warm up a bit later in the day. I', glad I don't live up north. Brrrr, but all that exercise shoveling, oh yeah.

It’s a bright sunny but very cold day here is Michigan today. With the wind chill I think we are just below zero. I have a ton of things on my agenda today but I am going to start with the kitchen. I boiled a dozen eggs to make some great egg salad for sandwiches, I am also doing a great tuna salad (home receipt) and a macaroni with tuna salad. My Chickens are laying eggs and I can’t keep up with them so I have decided to make a few salads that the grandkids can snack on and eat healthy and use my eggs up. Once I finish this project I am heading out to pick up prescriptions and then to Planet Fitness for a short routine project there.

I also want to get into the barn today and set up a third feeding for my beauties in the barn. I think with the cold weather a third feeding will be just the thing to get them through. I purchased some beet pulp and bags of timothy/alphafa pellets… (not cubes). I am going to set up a midnight run in the barn and just give them 3lbs each of the pellets and some beet pulp for the next 30 days to see what happens. I don’t know why I am so excited about it…cutting down on my feeding and raising theirs. I have 27 cats, 5 dogs and a goat I feed twice a day. My feed bill yesterday at Tractor Service Supply came to 321.00 for this coming month. This does not include the grain and hay I already feed the horses. I do have a ton of supplements ready and sitting until next month before I put the horses on coat conditioner, weight builder, red cell supplements and so forth. I just wormed the whole dang farm….so we are all doing good and getting ready for spring. Keeping my fingers crossed.

With that all said I have a busy day ahead of me so I will keep this short….and hope you are all doing well and things are going according to plan. I miss you but I am so busy right now I don’t have the time to chat with all my SP friends.

Funny, am at my granddaughters now and last night was one of the worse nights I have spent. I was so tired I went and took a nice hot shower climbed into bed a big comfortable queen size bed, had my dog Lilly with me she had already jumped into bed and found her spot. I got all snuggled in under the warm quilt and boy did my nerves take a turn for me. My legs were jumping so bad and no matter what I tried, I could not stop them. Lying there just made them worse,. It felt like little jolts of electricity going through my legs. I finally got up went down stairs and could not even sit it was so bad. I had to walk around the house and keep moving on my feet just to get through the night. By the time the sun came up it let up a little so I went back to bed but only slept for 3 hours.

After my accident my doctor put me on an nerve pain control that also works as an antidepressant. Nortriptline 25MG I had some nerve damage and it helped to get it under control. So today I called the Pharmacy and got a refill on it. Good thing I did my prescription would have fun out in a few weeks and I would have had to go and see my doctor just to get it. Anyway at 3 pm this afternoon I took two of them....and crawled into bed. I went to bed because these are suppose be be taken at bedtime....and I was exhausted anyway. Since she was off to work and I have her dog and mine here....which both are big baby pit-bulls I felt I needed a bigger bed....so I crawled into my granddaughters bed and let the dogs in with me. A big California King....plenty of room we were all off for a good sleep.....I did not wake up until 7 oclock giving me 4 hours of solid sleep. I am feeling a little jittery right now but hopefully another dose or two will get this drug into my system and allow me some healing relief. Meanwhile I will try to see my doctor,....just in case.

I am with you and not getting hung up on drugs. I don't know how I got through the life I did drug and alcohol free but I did. Never smoked either, but unfortunately others around me did and I have seen some devastation it has caused. I refuse to be hooked on any hard drug that will control my life so as soon as I can I get off any hard drug that is given to me, In the hospital I did what I had to do but at home its my choice. Makes like a little harder right now with actual pain but in the long run healthier I think.

I learned the hard way not to go cold turkey on anything. Mine was caffeine. I know i had to keep on the pills for the gas I think it was, had bad cramps and couldn't go to bathroom.
I think you are stronger than I am.
I'm glad you are going to granddaughter and get away.

I think the druggies just stay on the drugs so they don't feel that way. Guess money comes in to play to buy it though. I try not to get addicted. I was to Valium a long time ago. Just needed something for sleep.

I hope you heal and feel all better soon. Hope the family stress gets straightened out and over soon.

No I am taking it really easy just a lot of stress on me I guess. I have been known to be able to handle stress but it sure seems like it is building up on me right now. I drive automatics......and only went to the local Walmart to get a few things in food. I got yelled at by my granddaughter today for driving just that far. I am going to go and stay with her for a few days which might be good.

I have been without pain meds since I came home but I am a little shaky and my nerves seems to be jumping. My granddaughter thinks it might be from coming off the drugs...so quickly and going through a form of withdraw. I swear if ppl feel like this from drugs I don't see how they would want to be drug addicts.....this is not fun at all.

On a good note everyday seems to be getting a little bit better.

I hope everyone is having a great Monday to start out the new week. For those of you along the east coast I am keeping my fingers crossed. Wishing you all manage to get through the storm without too much trouble.

Just don't doing things too early than what the doc says, Joanna. I did and paid for it later. Healing takes time. Pushing on those peddles can be tricky. Do you drive an automatic or whatever the other is. I only know an automatic.

Sorry about your sister. I hope she goes back on her meds.

It's hard when you know your dog is sick and just has time left. Take lots of pictures and make lots of memories, which is what it sounds like you are doing. I kept some keepsakes like Clancie's collar, little sweater, toy. I put it all in a plastic box and still haven't gone back through it yet. She passed in 2015. In fact, I made a plastic box up for my mom with her sweater/vest, mirror, wallet, jewelry, things like that.

Wow, 31 lb loss, but what a way to go about it. I lose 3 and gain it back.

Tara, how are you doing.

Moira, how's the knees?

I'm feeling a whole lot better today, had a small incident between my grandson and my sister last night. Makes the third time she went off on the family here. I just found out she quit taking her medications that was helping her with her depression. Wonderful it looks as if I have to get in the middle again. She goes off and moves out without having any place to go.

I just don't feel like having to deal with this in the middle of winter and trying to recover on top of it all. It is what it is and somehow I will manage like always.

I heard some very sad news yesterday, one of my spark friends that I had become close to passed away while I was in the hospital and I am just devastated. It's funny how you can build a friendship with people you don't know but it is possible. I kind of feel at a loss coming on and not finding her on here giving out comments or leaving me messages.

I lost 31 lbs while in the hospital and seem to be still loosing. I need to pick up a little bit on eating I think I am eating less than 700 calories a day right now and as tender as my stomach is ....I need a little more than that to sustain me in the long haul.

My dogs are all back at home feeling happy I am here with them. My girl Lilly that has Cancer is doing ok....on her daily medicine but it will be taking it's toll on her before long. She has this look in her eyes....that she is just so excited to be considered a lap dog after all this time she has been trying to be one. She has always been what I like to call a needy dog....and at almost 80 lbs on your lap is not where she needs to be. But for the rest of her life we will all tolerate her needy self and make her a happy camper. I ordered a new dog bad to go in the back of my car so that she can go bye bye with me. I never let her into the car before but what the heck its only a car right. My memories of her will outlast the car by a long shot.

I should not be doing it but you can't keep an old horse down, I am going to get out today and drive. I figure I am not on any pain meds so I should not be falling asleep or having to many traveling problems. I want to go to the store and buy some food that is simple to fix.

Have a great Saturday afternoon.

Yes, definitely take stool softners. I remember after my hysterectomy, same thing there. I don't know how long I went without a BM. Good luck. Hope you heal fast. For someone as active as you, it has to be boring as well as painful. Catch up on some soap operas. LOL. I do watch Days of Our Lives though.

It’s not been an easy couple of weeks. I went into the hospital spent 5 days came out for a day went back in and went through not one but two surgeries. I had my gull bladder taken out and I was operated on my pancreas. I just got home yesterday and am feeling a little out of it. I am trying to stay off the pain meds and handle the pain naturally. It’s the sleeping part that is hurting me most. I want to turn on my face but the pain in my stomach will not allow me to. So far I have not had a bowel movement and it’s been over 15 days. Plenty of gas but no waste. I was told that the high narcotics used in pain can prevent that so that is one reason I am trying to stay away from pain meds. I am taking a lot of stool softeners so I guess only time will tell.

Court, even if both didn't come you wont have far to go to see both sides...I think Scotland is just as wonderful to see as Ireland. I love the Scottish accent. No I never got to take down my tree. :(

You know I have just discovered something interesting. I am not sure how it got by me prior to yesterday but, it’s here now and I am going to take advantage of it. I realized if I put on a pair of shoes when I get up….I feel much more like moving around. If I leave on my slippers I really don’t feel like doing much except sitting around not doing too much at all. But put on a pair of shoes it makes getting up and doing things seem closer at hand. It made me feel like I was ready to step up and do something. I was still in my pjs all day long….but with shoes on I managed to get up and down the stairs to do some laundry, clean my kitchen like 4 times, make some food to eat twice, clean the bathrooms from top to bottom, pick up my desk, and even vacuum the floor in the main living area. Which is pretty good for me considering that in-between times I took a shower, picked up my clothes, let the dogs in and out like 9 times, fixed the food and fed the dogs and cats twice, clean out the dishwasher and put away all the dishes. I did spend a lot of time on the computer, but no TV…didn’t turn it on once yesterday and went to bed without turning it on then either. That’s a plus in my book because I always turn on the damn TV. And you know what I didn’t miss it at all. Not for one second, didn’t think about my shows or what I might not be seeing.

Right now I am sitting at the front room on the computer looking out at the falling snow. It’s so beautiful to look at yet being practical it’s a mess. I did have one miss-hap yesterday…when I went to let the dogs out….I can’t let Lilly out with Champ because they will run….Lilly will take any dog she can on a run….so Snow and Champ are off limits when going out with Lilly. Well she saw a break and she ran for it when I opened the door….I went to grab her and went down on both knees and then to my side. Good thing the Hubby was around because I really took a good fall, he came flying to my rescue, caught the dog….and then helped me up. He offered to get me first but I said no…get the dog. She knew she was bad….she stayed quiet and away for a long time. So today…I have bruises everywhere and my right knee is swollen to twice the size. It’s so exciting around here.

I was going to attempt to go out today to Alexandra’s house to take care of Snowball her rabbit but she just informed me that I don’t have to go…..she has someone else going to do it tonight. Good news for me because I hate driving on this slippery snow covered ground.

Ok time to get a few things done so taking a break from the computer to do some housework. Have a great Sunday.

Tara, sorry to hear about Katie. Someone sent me a poem about the Rainbow Bridge when my dog passed. I sent it to you in a goodie.

Joanna, did you get your tree all down? I always like to put it up but taking it down was a bore.
I didn't refresh my page before I sent my post. That is great to take your grandkids to Ireland next year. I'm still looking for my Irish. Still buried behind the brick walls on my family tree.
DH's grandmother was from Ireland. Lucky guy! I'm hoping maybe my Scottish may have come from Ireland orginally, then I'd have both in the same family, Scottish and Irish.

I know it hurts, but don't feel too bad...you gave her a warm loving home and she gave you memories to recall. The best thing is to just open your heart to another and let them feel your love.

I have two pit bulls, one husky a boxer and an old black lab living in my home and my sisters little Boston Terrier. All are up in age except for the Terrier and Husky. I know my old girl (17) will have to go anytime. But right now she lives just to eat....so at least we can have her go out happy. My pit bull and boxer are going on 11....and the other pit bull is right behind her father...going on 9....the Husky is 3 and the Terrier is also just over 3. I keep saying no more dogs....but over the years they come and they go. I enjoy them while they are here and they fill our home with a lot of memories when they pass. I know more will come once these are gone. I also have 17 cats....but the good news is they live outside all but 2 right now. I have a beautiful male that was fixed at a very young age so he gets to come and go....and of all things a young cat showed up a couple of weeks ago....that we ended up letting in for the winter. We tried to introduce him to our group but they rejected him and fight with him. So my grandson snuck him in and he has been here every since.

To go along with that we have a barn full of horses.....a pony and a goat. Lucky me....the work never ends here on the farm. So a Vacation to Vegas every few months is just what the doctor ordered. I have a son that lives there...he is Chef in at the MGM Hotel there. When he comes to Michigan for any extended time he works for MGM here...in Detroit.

I am full Irish on my fathers side....Sheehan from Cork County 1/2 Irish on my mothers side Oshea. I love to visit there, but could not live there full time as much as I love it...its far too cold for me. I am planning a big trip there in the next year...with my grandson and granddaughter. It will be their first trip....both are grown so they will enjoy it.

Good morning all….I see we have some talking going on how wonderful it is to come into the team and see a little chit chat.
Moira: I feel your pain when it come to the knees I too went through silicone injections for a couple of years before I had my knees replaced. Then an accident laid me up for 18 months just days after the replacement so nothing has turned out right and my knees are not bending 100 % as they should and with several metal objects in my foot and right leg nothing will ever be the same. While laid up I put on a whopping 70lbs. At least you are trying…dump or not just getting out and doing something is a plus. Congratulations on just the effort.

Tara: Hi and welcome back to the team. I hope this time around you get to accomplish what you want. I was reading and it seems like you have gone through a lot of changes. Being an animal lover is always a plus. Seems like you have been all over the US….FYI Queens is one of the better spots in NY but I like you would have stayed behind. Glad to hear that your husband will not be home more often and you won’t have to be so lonely. House hunters must be an addiction I too watch it. I just love the HGTV channel so I watch a lot of programs on there. I also like the DYI channel for the do it yourself fix me uppers.

It’s finally here. I woke up to a cold icy snow covered ground with a light rain of just pure ice. My deck is so slippery the dogs were sliding around trying to get up and down this morning. Getting down to the barn is going to be dangerous until this settles and we can get some leverage on it. Not so much shoveling but a lot of salt spreading will go into this storm. I hate to think what these back roads will bring so I am not going to touch upon that problem today at all.

I will take advantage of today and take down my Christmas decorations in the house…..do some laundry and a little deep cleaning while I just enjoy being home with no place to go. But before I start with anything I am going to take one of my little magic pills that will allow me to get all this done. Yep I have just such a thing and I never take it unless it’s a must and all this work sounds like a must to me. Without taking it I can do maybe a third of what I am hoping to get done before my back and legs hurt me to a point I have to give up. But, with taking it I can keep going without feeling all the pain for at least half a day.

I hope you are all finding a way to enjoy your Saturday and in the process accomplish something constructive. I did manage to book my flight to Vegas yesterday so all I have to do is get through a few days of Michigan weather and I am off to have a good time.

Court,

My Dad died Dec 28th 2010, he was 79. I lost my sister in Sept 2001, my Mum in June 2003 and my brother 8 months after my Mum in Feb 2004. I have no other siblings.

We have 3 black lab mixes, all girls and all rescues. The oldest Katie is 12 and unfortunately her days are numbered. Abbie is next and she is almost 8. Our newest little Sammie girl is 3. I found her at the Delarware Puppy Rescue . She was 8 weeks old as was listed as a black lab mix. It turns out the mix was a daschund, not a mini. She is so cute, she is only around 35 lbs where the other 2 are close to 80.

I have been to Spain, France, Switzerland and Canada. I use to love to fly but unfortunately back in the 90's I experienced a really bad flight and now I am afraid to fly. I still fly but I take medication but if I can drive I will drive.

We love watching House Hunters too. We watched numerous ones last night.

Its very cold and windy here in PA today but at least the sun is out

Tara, I'm in Vero Beach, Fl. on the east coast below Jacksonville and above Ft. Lauderdale.
When I lived in Ohio I was in East Liverpool. Part of the Tri-State, Ohio/Pa/WV. We could look outside our kitchen window and see the Ohio river and WV on the other side.
We don't have any kids either. DH is from Indiana and came to Fl as a kid. We had a dog of almost 13 yrs, but she died in 2004 before our major hurricanes.

My mom died in 2010, Dec. 22. I figured she wanted to be in heaven with my dad for Christmas. She was 94.

I doubt that I ever get to Ireland, but I can dream, watch movies and read about it. I like to watch House Hunters International. They have people looking for places in Ireland.

Have you been to any other countries? I've been to Canada and would like to go to Scotland to find graves of some ancestors I found through ancestry.com. I'll find my Irish soon. Fingers crossed. I wish they had an emoticon for that.

Moira, I may have to find a new computer the way this one acts up. lugh!

Joanna, yeah, a quiet evening is safer on New years Eve. Besides DH has trouble seeing at night and so do I. Good excuse. haha

Court, when I left home I arrived in St.Louis and that is where I met my husband. In 1991 we were moved to the Fort Worth/Dallas area. We were told we would be there 2 years but they moved us 6 months later to Ohio. We lived in the Akron area for the next 7 years, we were then sent to Montgomery Al for 7 years. Back to Dallas area for 2 years, then back to St.Louis for 2 years. My husband ended up quitting that company and getting a job in the Harrisburg area here in PA. After 3 years at that job they eliminate his position but he found a job right away but unfortuantely it was in Queens NY. We decided that I would not move and he lived in NY Sunday to Friday for 3 1/2 years. This past April in found a job back here in PA, its outside Philly so he has a long commute everyday but its great to have him living back home. We have no kids, our kids are 3 dogs so it was lonely for me but it went by fast.

I hope you get to go to Ireland. I went home very year until my Dad in 2010, I have not been home since.

Where in Fl are you located.

Tara, welcome back, so glad to have you here. I know what you mean about home changing. I've lived in the states my whole life from Ohio to Florida. Going back to Ohio was a shock. It has changed a lot too. Unfortunitly, down hill.

I'd love to go to Ireland. I know, from DNA, that I"m part Irish, but have't found them yet.

I hope you heal and get back to your tennis. Good luck in the new year. Seems like it was just New years 2014 !! Where did the year go?

Hi All, its been a few years since I have been on Sparkpeople. I was born in Cork and came to the US to go to college and then met my husband and have been living here every since. I miss Ireland but it sure has changed since I was a child. I left Cork in 1982.I live in PA now.
I gained about 20lbs this year and need to get it off. I play a lot of tennis but have not been able to play for 5 months due to injury. The Dr says I might be able to go back in Feb. Hope I can.

Hi and Happy Holidays. I got my computer back! Yes, it actually has been that long. I wasn't planning on getting it repaired but decided it's cheaper than buying a new one. I've put all my weight back on- and I've got 50 lbs to lose again. Had silicone injections in my knees. Since we moved here in July I was far enough from the gym that I didn't like to drive all that way. Today I joined the one here in town. It's a dump but it's got equipment & classes. I did have an exercise bike on layaway at Walmart but I didn't get it in time. I'll get one soon so I don't have to leave the house to work out. Hope all are well. Happy New Year. Failte.

It sounds like your and my bringing in the New Year are similar. We never go out that night just to be safe...we do throw a small celebration for anyone of the kids or grand-kids that want to be here. As the kids grew up we would just celebrate with them.....but as they took on their own ways...we were designated babysitters.....and well now....we are just here.

That's great that you and DH will be together finally for the New Year. I hope it is a special celebration for other years too.
My DH is usually watching something on TV in the bedroom or living room and i'm on the computer in the den. It comes close to the ball coming down and we get together in the living room have a bite to eat while watching and kiss at midnight and go back to what we were doing.

I had a shepherd/husky, or shepsky as I called her once. Nicki was her name. She was a good dog. This was when I was young and still lived at home in an apartment over my parents downstairs. It was a big house and made into 2 apts.

After the death of our last dog, we decided not to get any more pets. it was too hard. She was special. Clancie, part spaniel and peke.....or pekaniel, as I call it.

I'm glad you made the right decision for your dog, to opt for longer life without the drug. That is great that you could wean your dog of her meds.

Sometimes when people are on meds for years, maybe they'd be better off without the daily routine the doctor's script out. I often wonder that with my mom. One doctor had her on some drug that was causing her problem. Glad we got a new doctor when she moved here.

You'll be glad to get the place all back to normal. Holidays really change things around, don't they? We didn't have room to put up a tree this year.

Have a Happy New Year.

I felt a crisp cold in the air when I went out today. I quite enjoyed it for some strange reason. I stood on the front deck and took a look around…..not liking what I was seeing though. So many leaves left over and the grounds kind of dug up from cars driving over it when it rains. Half my beautiful horse statue missing from the center of the garden. It was taken apart to keep if from damage and stored in the glass house. Remnants of debris that should have been either removed or fixed before winter. All in all not my winter wonderland at all.

As for me I am trying to come up with my New Year resolution list. I don’t want to make it a long one but perhaps an interesting one. Obtainable goals that I can keep up with rather than a few weeks into the year realizing I am not doing them at all. I can say this with honesty for it has happen year after year. I set all these wonderful goals and before spring they are just passing thoughts.

My dog is lying here comfortable at my feet just waiting for me to move. She has turned out to be quite a creature of comfort. Being a husky you would think she would love the cold weather but no she like all my short haired dogs prefers the comfort of a warm house and even likes watching the fire. My worse regret with getting her is the hair that she sheds. OMG does she shed. Better now than when we first got her but still she leaves a white path where ever she goes. As for her medical condition I hope we have accomplished the impossible and she is over it if not at least through the worst of it. She was an epileptic and went into many secures the first year we brought her home. She was in and out of the doctor’s office along with being on medication. I was told that most likely she would be on meds for life. Yet after a couple of years….we started weaning her off it. The meds were shortening her life even though they were saving it. If she continued to take it she would lose a few months a year until the end, cheating her out of life. So I started testing it and cutting back on the meds. With a few errors and mistakes I have now gotten her off the meds and no sign of a secure for over a year and a half.

Unfortunately she cannot run free like the rest of the dogs and experience the same freedom they do, but I think of it as she being a city dog and always having to be on a leash. I run her during the weather that is permitted on a 20 foot leash and using a golf cart over the fields and hills which all the dogs seem to follow in tow. So she does enjoy it to that extent. She has to be walked on a leash to go do her business or if in the middle of the night she is let out on the back deck. My sister has so graciously volunteered to be her walker since she also takes her own dog on a leash. All in all its working out for the better. She is a happy content dog and has found a place to fill out our hearts including hers. And oh my gosh is she a talker when she gets going. She gets very competitive with Simon the other big mouth in the house.

I am waiting on my hubby to get back home in time to celebrate the New Year…..can you believe that it’s been 38 years we have been together and not one year have we not been together for bringing in the New Year. Quite an accomplishment in today’s age of divorce and trade in. Hehehe….I can only say it takes a lot of work.

Ok am off now to the city to pick up family for a few days of visiting during Christmas break. Have a great weekend.

Those are great ideas. I don't get out much, but I have a treadmill.

My church is a dress down church. I like that because if people want to go to church and don't dress up clothes they don't have to be afraid to come to our church. Sometimes the pastor even wears jeans. I used to go on Saturday which I thought was the dress down service. When I had to start to go on Sunday, I wondered as I don't really have dress up clothes. The only skirts I have don't fit.

Our church has a food pantry. I don't know if other churches in other states have one or not. Not sure how many of our churches have one, but we do have a food pantry, not connected with any churches.

I'm lucky living in Florida, I don't have to worry about snow and cold. Ironic. You live in the cold/snow and like to get out and I don't care that much getting out and live in Florida.

Here is it the 21st of December and it's pretty cold outside but no snow or hard weather to keep me so I can't get out. This being said I sat down to figure out a good strategy for winter activity to keep me busy on the off days. I opened an article on SPARK 10 things you can do during winter. Unfortunately not one of them fit my bill. I can't Ice Skate, Sky, Snowboard, Go Sledding, or even do the Hiking they suggest without worry that I will end up worse off than I already am. I wish there were things that could be suggested for older people that have arthritis, disabilities and pretty much everything else rather than just concentrating on the healthy viewers. After all if I was in all that good of health I would not be here in the first place.

As much as I enjoy hiking during the fall and spring, the winter where I can not see the ground under me is not a safe bet. So I figured I would give it a shot and come up with a few things I feel I might be able to do and get away with it over winter. Not to mention get out and about. Here goes.

Visit the mall without Shopping....instead of walking around it how about I rent a scooter and just fly around it and enjoy the freedom of speed. ( Walk if you can of course)

Visit Barns & Noble....sit in a big comfy chair and catch up on some reading without having to buy the book. (It's cheating a little but oh so worth the trip.) If you have to spend buy a warm drink to enjoy while you read.

Spend the day at a museum and take the walking real slow so I can enjoy all the art and the talent that I would miss if not there to see. (Maybe take a friend to share the day with)

Volunteer at a local food bank that will keep me busy and active while I get to know some of my neighbors. If I schedule that just a couple of times a month it will be giving back which is always a plus in my book.

Visit a local animal shelter and volunteer....for me I will just stay home and go out to the barn. A few hours out there bending and brushing along with some hugs and treats will give me a good workout. I can do that a couple of times a week and not go out of my way.

Take my Husky that needs to be always on a leash...to the dog park and walk around it at a nice pace a couple of times a week. If all is well let her go and she can play with the other dogs for a while.

Get my butt in gear and start my mornings with some at home exercises....a few to get me going will not take to much time. Some stretches, a few with the bands I have installed at the wall, light leg work.....and of course build that core to help me get going. Don't leave the room until they are done...should be my motto. We are not talking 2 hours here just 15 to 20 minutes will suffice.

Dust all my furniture once a week...that right there will be a workout...I get a lot of dust here in the country side. For those of you in the city...Dust it more often like three times a week. Don't forget those dang nick-knacks - or clean out your dresser drawers. Good exercises and makes for more comfortable living.

Take a winter carriage ride all bundled up just for the fun of it...getting in and out of the carriage will be enough on a cold day. Bundle up warm....of course let someone else hook up the horses. My grandsons hook them up for me to pull the sled or the carriage I do handle the horses through and that is a bit of a workout on occasions. I always invite others over to enjoy it with me....I seldom go alone these days.

Hmmm One more!

Make a commitment to get out every Sunday and go to Church.....at least once if not twice daily. Find a church where it is not required for you to get dressed up and can be more casual. While there get involved with some interesting groups that will require you to be more active. Stay away from the clicks that can only leave you depressed and wear you out trying to belong to something they don't want you to belong to. Remember is not what they give you out of being there....it's what you get out of it. You should leave a church feeling you accomplished something and feeling good about yourself and life around you. If you don't after a couple of tries....FIND A NEW CHURCH. Remember that God helps those that help themselves and we all could use a little self help from time to time.

Hold my horses I think I am coming up with a plan.

Happy Holidays

Joanna

That sounds like great fun and a lot of work. Hay rides are fun. When I worked up north the office went on one and then cooked marshmellows over a bondfire. Sweet memories. I bet you have a lot of pictures of your farm and events. I can imagine the kids giggles having fun riding the pony ride. I don't think I've seen that around any more. I'm glad you're still doing it.

Have a Merry Christmas; I can't believe it is almost the end of the year.

Hey Court, glad you are all ready for Christmas. It's a nice Saturday here in Michigan. I just got back from Food Shopping...spent most of last night shopping and didn't make it home until Midnight....I am about worn out but thinking that at least I am getting in a lot of walking for my fitness logging. Our farm is always a busy place during the holidays for that matter most of the time. I do have lots of family and of course they all want to come to Grandmas house. We should have at least 23 to 30 here for the holidays. I put a pretty good Christmas Eve dinner together with left overs for Christmas Day. Most of the family will spend Christmas Day at home with their families but there is always a few that stay home over the weekend. We also open our home to the public for our Christmas Forest during the holidays.....and we have a haunted forest during October. We get somewhere between 2 and 4 thousand people that come through it each year to check out what's new.

We offer hay rides and buggy rides all day long from 12pm to 6pm and then from 8pm to 10pm in the evenings. Each ride takes about 30 minutes and we charge a 5.00 donation that goes to care for the rescued horses....for food and medical bills throughout the year. During October we offer the rides and a corn maze along with pony rides for the young kids. We give out donuts and cider and sell home made horseshoes that are decorated up in different little things from picture frames to coat hooks. All the shoes are used from the horses here on the property. We sell Hugs ( HELP US GIVE SANCTUARY) 2 Horses Tee Shirts and Sweat Shirt. Between that and hosting a ride-a-thon once a year is all the funds we raise for the rescue.....it gives us just over 50 % of our needs. The rest we donate from our personal income. No government financing or grants.

I don't mind the Hubby being away this is his second year of going to Thailand and he works so hard during the year to have him go off for a few weeks is nothing....he so deserves it. He would like me to go too and so would I but one of us has to stay here since its such a long time. I travel throughout the year for my work and pleasure so I elected to give up the trip to him.

As far as sleigh rides we only offer them in the snow....if the weather permits. Our lake and Pond is lit up and the kids Ice Skate on the Pond. Good wholesome winter outdoor fun.

Merry Xmas
Joanna

Wow, that is so great to do all that and in that way, so thoughtful. You will be so blessed by God.

I doubt that we put a tree up. It's buried in the garage somewhere. We have boxes in front of boxes and boxes on high shelves so instead of having DH with his poor feet have to stand and pull boxes down etc, I'll just use what we used last year and have boxed up in the house. Little knickknacks to lay about. We don't have very many people stop by.

Tonight I'm going with some friends from church to a night of music at the church.

I have been so busy during the holidays....oh boy did I have a house full for Thanksgiving. A total of 34 Family and Friends decided not only to come for dinner but stay for a couple of days. Trying to host so many is tiring to say the least. Now I am trying to get the Hubby on the road he leaves for Thailand with my son and his family for the next few weeks. They will be missing Christmas once again this year. Still I have many more that are just waiting on me to come up with the festivities.

Bad news I can't find my main Christmas Tree....I have searched everywhere and nothing to be found. I am not sure what I can do to replace it. I don't want a real tree as much as I enjoy the smell of it. I found 3 smaller trees that one might have to be used in place of it. I am missing a ton of decorations also. So sad....we have searched the entire property and can't seem to locate it. All my outside is done but so far nothing but containers are in the inside waiting on a tree for the main room.

As far as Christmas shopping goes I have barely done any and to make matters worse I hate crowds and I think I am hitting that time of year where there is nothing but crowds. The good news is that all the little kids under 10 are bought for and they are all that really matters. My older grandkids all like MONEY...makes it easy so they can buy their own and get what they want. I do try to buy a little something for each of them. As far as the kids....they all have family of their own so I think I am not going to buy for them.

It seems to me that over the years the cost of competing at Christmas has gotten out of control. So for the last few years.....my kids and I have changed it around and we try to pick a goal or project and work toward that. Last year we gave away 100 blankets to the homeless. This year we have picked 3 families that we feel might or could use our help not only on Christmas but throughout the year. So what will be doing is sending them an anonymous letter this year letting them know we are here and will be helping them out. We request at that time if they can to give us birthdays of all the children under the age of 10. I know there is a total of 7 children in the three families. We send each family a Christmas gift of 150.00 so they can buy gifts for the children or food if needed. Then starting in January we set it up through our bank to pay their electric and gas bills for the next year and help with any rent or house payments depending if anyone in the family has any income. We no longer send cash as we need to make certain the money goes to help the family. All they have to do is drop off the bills to the local bank we have set up for their use. The bank will submit a copy of the bill to our email and we will transfer the funds to pay the bills online. The reason we do it through the bank rather than sending them a check....is the fact that I feel people are proud and when they need help they don't want to be put into a position of having to say thank you every time they turn around. I don't want their children or them to be embarrassed if they happen to run into any of our family. So anonymous is a good way to go. It allows them to take and us to give without putting either of us in an uncomfortable position.

I love the ideal of sending cards to the children throughout the year congratulating them on good grades or jobs well done. We offer little goals that will help them try harder such as summer breaks to a local horse back riding camp, or a weekend trip to SPLASH universe. We've might supply the family with tickets to a live theater show geared toward kids. It all depends on how much money we can supply throughout the year and the needs of the family if they can get back and forth to such events.

You will be surprised how good you feel at the end of the day when you can do something for others. We as a family have decided to do this again this year because we have been lucky enough to stay together and help each other without to many bumps in the road.

Oh well there I go again blabbering on and on.

Have a great Holiday

Hehe Court you did make me chuckle when I saw this. You are just too cute. I am sure we all have interesting things we can write down. It's like that old Dragnet saying there are a million people in the city and they all have a story. Making sure you don't wear the same things two and three times in a roll is very important.

Just keep lots of notes and one day down the road, you can start to draft out your stories. I started to keep a diary, but my life has no ....life, I write things down like what I wore to church, so I won't wear the same thing next week.

I was so afraid that you were going to say Jasmine died. I'd be in tears. I'm glad she is still going. We had a dog for almost 13 years, devastated when she died and haven't gotten another dog since.

I never thought about how much horses are like humans in some ways. Jasmine being lazy and getting you all to cater to her. That was funny. You should write a book about all your experience with horses.

Court - I am not sure how to answer that question on which is the easiest to train. Over my years I have broke so many different breeds that to say one breed is easier than another is not that simple. I use to prefer quarter horses, but in reality it didn't matter. The hardest horses to break were the ones with attitude and older horses that had not been taught manors at an early age. Kind of like a child. If you get them young and teach them right they pick it up...if you get a hard headed teenage that is use to their own way to get them to bend to yours is not that easy. But with patience and time I have found that in most cases they will come around. You just had to make them think it was their idea and not yours. I have had horses that I could get on their backs and just ask them lightly to move....and others that would flip over every time I went to mount them.

One of my most beautiful horses went through that flipping stage for years. You could just count on him flipping over like a ticking time bomb....yet to look at him he commanded an audience. We had to let him flip over and then he rode perfect and did so well in the show ring. When I would ride him down the road....I could feel when he was going to flip over so I would just let him and then remount and continue for hours of enjoyment out of his ride. His brother did the same thing...right up until they both died. Yet he was one of the most gentle horses I have ever had.

I had another one that you could ride anywhere at anytime. He would and could do any kind of riding from trails to the show ring and always in the blue ribbons...in everything. But, if you took him near water...he would go crazy and if you ask him to cross a puddle he would kill himself rather than cross...so you had to dismount him and walk him through with you going through first before he was sure it was safe. This resulted from him going into a lake as a baby it bottomed out on him and he went under ....and apparently never felt safe after that.

I had a big quarter horse mare....that was the best and most comfortable ride you could imagine she would do anything and nothing scared her...from steep mountain sides to crossing rivers. She could jump 6 feet up and 6 feet over without breaking a stride. Yet she was a power hungry mare...meaning she liked being boss. She was head mare of her group and if you tried to take her away from her group she could give you the ride of your life. She could rear and move on her back two legs like no other Horse I had ever known...maybe because she was such a strong jumper. She was not about to flip over and get dirty she was far to fussy about her grooming style. But she could rear and back up into ditches, lakes and river beds trying to get your off her back....and to fight her would only irritate her more. Unless you were an expert rider you would not want to be on her. I use to have so many people offer me tons of money for her....which i would never sell her. But, it was fun to watch them...I would say come out and ride her at my place and if you like the ride we will talk about money. Not once did anyone want her once they got on her back and tried to take her off the property away from her herd. They would come back walking saying she needed to be dog food or put down or all sort of silly things....never would they want her. She and I both just laughed at them...for me she was the best thing I could have. I taught my granddaughter to ride her and jump on her....but the granddaughter right up until my mare died would not ride her down the road. She would say...Gma Royal will kill me. Yet, me I took her all the time...I knew how to ride her and what to expect...and we understood each other....I took two falls off her in my entire life. One when I took her with a group of friends....we got to her spot and she started her rearing....I reached up to smack her upside the ear...and she dropped her head so fast I went over her neck to the ground.....I slid down her neck like a snake fast and quick...but I held her massive neck to help break my fall. She never moved she just stood there watching me.....most likely laughing at me...I remounted to all my friends surprise...and we continued without any problems. My friends were worried about me getting back on but me I was never worried even in the fall she knew if she did anything after that she was in trouble. After all I broke her I knew how to handle a temperamental mare (female) when it came to my girls.

I have so many stories through the years I could share...but none so simple as a little mare that I had...a quarter horse chestnut in color...when she was born....I gave her to my grandson as his first horse. Just a couple of days after I gave her to him...he was only 5 at the time....she got out and into a fresh field and ate the fresh grass....but unfortunately if a horse eats to much fresh grass they can get sick a couple of ways. She got sick and foundered. Her hooves (feet) swelled up and she was running a fever. My grandson went out to feed her the next morning and was crying because she could not be found. We did find her in the grass lying down....she could not stand on her feet. What happens is the feet get so hot they soften.....and with the swelling they feel like finger nails that have been bitten below the quick only 10 times worse. If the horse stands on them or walks they eventually soften and fall off and you have to put the horse down.

How do I tell my grandson I can not save his horse I thought to myself. My husband went and got the tractor and we put a belt around the baby horse she was only 6 months old. Used a chain to hoist her into the air and take her to a stall.....in there we had to hobble her feet together so she could not get up even if she wanted to. Which right now she didn't. I knew we had to get the temperature down and somehow keep her off those feet while they hardened back up. Then wish for the best that she would be able to walk on them. For the next few months...not weeks we kept her down. She got feed and water on the ground. I, my husband, and my oldest granddaughter would go in 6 to 8 times a day...hold buckets of water up for her to bend her neck and drink out of. We would put hay by her head and if she wiggled around...we would pick it up and move it to where her head was. It took almost 8 weeks to get the fever down....to a steady temperature and then we waited for the hooves to harden. After 3.5 months of brushing her and cleaning her stall and scooting her back and forth in a stall we removed the shackles for good. That mare took another month....to attempt to get up. She was so lazy and so babied she wanted us to cater to her and bring in her water. My granddaughter went in to clean the stall one day and found that her poop was closer to her head than her butt...Alexandra came running in saying I think Jasmine was up gma. I ran to the barn only to find her down and when I tried to get her to get up she balked and refused. So I said...best way to test it is to quite putting her food and water on the ground...put it up make her go after it. This mare loved to eat. It took almost a whole day before she finally realized that we were not coming back with the water buckets and food.....by the time the night was over she apparently got up to eat...the next morning when we went in to feed...she was standing there waiting on her food to be put into her bucket.

We babied her so much she thought she had some human instincts I guess. She did not like the other horses and no matter what she found a way out of the fences and into the back yard....she finished growing up in our backyard hanging out on the patio and lounging in the sun lying down. When it came time to break her at 3 years old...we cant break before that...the knees do not close on a horse until then or shortly after. She was the easiest horse I had ever broke...I did not do any ground work with her....just put my then 7 and a 1/2 years old grandson on her to walk around....she not once gave him a problem. The next day....we put a saddle on her....and with him in toll we set off down the road...with other horses. She went where he told her to go...and she never spooked or did anything wrong. For the next two years...she was the perfect horse for him....he took her on tons of trail rides....and since I was not comfortable with him on a fast horse she was perfect she never wanted to run let alone try to run off with him. As he got older....and rode so much better....he wanted faster horses but her speed was only one...walk and not to fast at that.

I took her back and gave him a different horse and decided to mount her myself and train her to move off my legs. By the time I was done she could walk, trot, and run on command....she did anything and everything I asked her for without giving me any problems what so ever. I think she just loved the fact that we gave her attention and trusted everything we (I) said....knowing she was safe with us. She is an old girl now and produced 3 fine foals of her own...which all turned out as strong and brave as she was....she has taught 100's of young riders and a few older ones how to ride properly and she has always been a horse of choice to go out on the trails for beginner riders. No surprises there.

They say Arabians are high strung and crazy and to hot to handle but next time I will tell you a story that is amazing about some of my Arabians. For now....its all about Jasmine.

Thanks for all the info. That had to break your heart to sell your horses, but for very important reason, for your kids and now look at what all you have!!! That is a wonderful life story.

I googled a pinto and thought it looked like Little Joe's horse. I don't know one from the other. Paint is what he had. It's a pretty horse. What is the easiest horse to train or for a beginner to ride?
It's great that the whole family rides. Makes a nice family get together adventure for a day. I'd loved to have seen the barrel races. I've seen some on tv.

I loved horses since I was a kid. I grew up in foster homes and one of the homes had an old pony that I got to ride once in a while. It stuck with me for years later when I was in my teens I would visit the mounted police and watch the practices in the local park from afar. I was spotted there after a long while by a police officer and he offered to let me ride his horse if I would come along and clean his stall and learn to groom him. I found out a police horse is the best kind of horse to learn on they are bomb proof. He gave me lessons over the next two years on and off and we became friends. I got married at age 18 just before I entered college, my husband was already an attorney just out of college and for a wedding present he bought me a pair of young Thoroughbreds - race horses. I was so excited I had a girlfriend that her parents had a small farm after they retired. They let me keep my two horses there. I would only get to go on the weekends but it was such a pleasure to get out and go there every Saturday and Sunday. I raised them from 5 months old until they were grown....I raised all my children to learn to ride them....In the late 60's and early 70's I would take off and travel around the states to barrel race. By the mid 70's my first husband died....and I had to give up traveling to raise all my young kids, but I was an attorney and we worked it all out. I had to sell the horses so I could devote my time to my children. In 1976 I remarried....and my husband which was new...decided he liked my country way and invested in horses that we boarded for a couple of years...I acquired 6 with him in our first 3 years of marriage. He being a contractor and engineer decided to build me a barn that would house my horses...so we invested in land and built a barn first then a house. Way before the house was built I filled the barn to the max with horses. I had 18 horses before I had a home. Once the house was built I left the city life and moved to the country. Since we have been married we have moved into three homes ...the city one, the small country farm and now ...our second country home which I have been here just a little over 20 years now. We lived in the first city home for two years while he built me a country home...which we lived in for 6 years and sold to buy more land and now here we are and that puts me married the second time around for 28 going on 29 years. Wow time flies when you are having fun. Trust me it was an up and down rocky road but we hung in there and raised all our kids....well my kids he and I never had any. We also raised 4 our the grand kids and guess what they all ride horses...boys and girls and most of their cousins. Everyone loves the horses.

And little Joe had a PAINT horse not a Pinto.....The pinto is a half breed....that has Arabian in it. Little Joe's horse was a Mustang...making it part of the PAINT family. Go figure where they came up with all that (hehe).

I hope that answers your question.

Hugs

How did you get started with horses? You may have told us but I forget. Sounds like a lot of work. Do you have favorites like pets? I don't think I've ever ridden a horse. As a kid I was on a pony at one of these parks where they lead you around, it was fun though. Down the street from me is a barn with horses and sometimes we see them on the side roads walking along. I always like Little Joe's pinto.....at least I think it was a pinto. it was pretty.

Today was an all work and no play day with the horses. Groomed up 17 of them...cleaned out the feet...put in some thrush med just to keep it safe in case...I didn't spot anything but you never know where they are out in the fields. I clipped manes and braided and wrapped up tails until my fingers hurt. I bent over so much today and lifted such heavy feet I think I strained my stomach muscles. Hope I don't get a hernia. I forgot to put on a brace...and just felt like super-girl I guess, big mistake. I got all 17 of them wormed, now all I have left is to tackle the rest but that has to wait for another day.

On a good note I am feeling a little better today. I have started taking pain pills just to get through the day. My lower back and ankle seems to be getting worse as time goes by. I have been eating better or so I think....it doesn't seems to be doing anything for my weight. I don;t weigh myself but I do make assumptions and it sure doesn't seem to be falling off the weight that is.

I was taking advantage of the last of the good weather yesterday and decided to give one of the horses a bath. By the time I was finished my lower back hurt so bad. I had to tie her up to dry and was hoping to get back to braid her mane and tail but unfortunately I was not up to it so I am going back out today to finish her up.

I sit while working and oh my gosh it was so hard to get through the night. It was a pain to get up and down in and out of the chair before the night was over. I sure hope this is not an example of days to come as the weather get colder.

I plan to get to warmer weather but not until after January thus making it a miserable time while here. Enough with the negative side of life. Lets go for the positive. I have re-joined Planet Fitness hoping to make it a regular routine but so far I have not even made one visit. (hehe)

I did get my closet cleaned out. Deciding to donate 1/3 of the clothing to a good cause and packing away all the things I will not wear for the winter left me with a very clean and roomy closet. I put all the purses, shoes, and so forth away that I will not be using. I just hope I remember to open it in the spring before I go out buying new things. When I went into the attic I noticed a whole lot of things I put up there and forgot about. Decoration items for the house....that I have changed over time and stored away and forgot about. Out of sight out of mind is a true statement. My sister was overwhelmed...saying she could furnish two houses with all my junk. It's not junk but might as well be since I am not using it. I have some wonderful paintings....statues....table settings and just little nic-nacs that could be used..... Winter scenes for the colder weather....Spring scenes....well all weather scenes. I use to decorate my home given the season. There is a couple of wonderful pieces of wood furniture...I simply forgot about. We found a whole box of dog toys...that of course she decided to get out again. She has one little Boston Terrier what she wants with the complete box I have no ideal but we will see. She will be bending over picking them up not me.

Ok...time to go I wanted to check in and keep my running going...but I have many things to try to get done today. It's a rainy day but that doesn't keep me out of the barn and away from the horses. Love you all....take care today and enjoy life for as it goes....it's here today and gone tomorrow. We can't get it back to enjoy it while you can.

When it rains it pours or so they say. I am at a point where I can successfully say I have been through it all. To bring you into the loop of things let me start out by telling you a couple of facts. I live in a remote area of Michigan that apparently ATT, CAB LE companies, and the famous DTE ENERGY has over looked when it comes to making updates on their existing equipment or add any equipment at all when it comes to cable companies. With that say....if the wind blows the wrong way we are out of Electric. Now when you live in the country things are a little different. Good points and bad depending on which side of the fence you are sitting at the time. In this case it's always the wrong side, for everything in our home or on our farm depends on electricity to function. So when it's out we are back to mother nature more or less. No heat, no lights, and most of all no running water. Now out of all the things that can go wrong the number one most important is the Water because without water we can not function on many levels. No water to flush the toilets, no brushing teeth, no baths, no water to drink, and mostly in our case no water to give to the animals with horses being the number one issue. We can always go out and pick up a few gallons to drink and give to the smaller animals and use to get your teeth brushed. Still no showers though. We can walk down to the pond and bring up a few large buckets and sit it in the bathrooms to pour into the toilet bowls to flush temporary I suppose. But back to the horses again no water. So the next best thing is to have a generator to hook up to your home and with the help of a little bit of gas all is well so the saying goes.

In my case this is the weekend that it decided not to go so well in fact it has gone haywire. It started with Friday night the lights were flickering on and off then finally half the electric when out in the house but half stayed on...dim but on. No TV's it seems if you turned on a TV it blew the power out and with all the people in my house that was the first issue. They can't survive without the TV...so jumping around turning it off just to watch the circuit blow and then come back on did not give them a clue that something was wrong. I finally had to get upset and tell them to leave the Damn TV's off. Once off the lights came back on Dim but on....no heat all our wood burners and baseboard heat runs on electric. We could not hook the generator up it was the husbands night out. Another Friday night club night. So at 11 pm we all called it a night and curled up in bed. I text-ed Tom early the next morning telling him we were out of electricity and needed him home.

Home he came only to let me know there were more serious problems. It seemed that trying to hook the generator up would not work in this case. We were in trouble and it was only the tip of the iceberg. Update on farm life.....we have WELL water in the country. No city water out here because none of the utility companies want to run lines. Okay, so here is the deal and like I said a first for me. We have two power meters on our house. Both 110 lines coming from the transformer at the pole and then going to the main grid. That gives us 220 service which to run the major things in a house you need 220 like your refrigerators, stoves, washers, driers, heat, and of course the WELL pump. It seems one of the meters from going on and off all the time....over the years decided to short and actually melt against the house. Leaving us with only one meter and 110 services. Explains why we had a power issue. The 110 was not enough to function fully and so the main stuff shut down but the lights and smaller things continued at half power.

DTE Energy came out.....and they were a little shocked but preceded to repair the complete housing unit just outside the house and made sure there was no problem going to the transformer. He was very polite and did his job fully and we now are back up with full power. But, and there is always a but....this is what is the really kicker of the whole deal we are still without the number one item we need in this whole ordeal...W A T E R. We have none.....and it is really beginning to affect us. All my horses had to be turned out into the pastures where we have access to at least partial water. If we can not fix this quickly things will get really stinky around here. Not me...I am off to the granddaughters to have a shower and wash my hair. The rest have to feign for themselves. I am going to pick up some gallons of water for the dogs and maybe to try to get some water to do up the truck load of dishes. But we now have to dig up the WELL and fix the pump that blew during all this electrical problems. We think the power meter caused the pump motor to fry, but that is just an uneducated guess at the moment. In all the years we lived here we have never had a pump problem so this is a first for me to face. I have no ideal what the cost will be. I did ask about putting in a new well on a different area of the property the cost ran 5,000 and up depending on how deep they had to drill. I guess we will let that go and try to fix this now....but it all takes time and time is not on our side when it comes to water for the horses.....we go through about 125 gallons a day just so they can drink. There is no way we can carry that much in 5 gallon buckets back and forth from the lake or pond on a daily basis.

So here we go again for another great country adventure that I can add to my stories if I ever decided to write a book.

Court you make me smile...60's that's still warm for us up here in Michigan as you know. But, we are seeing the changes come fast and furious starting with the colors. I love getting out and just taking the time to look around. Nature in all its beauty is a wonder still to me after all these years.

Still I am not looking forward to facing a full Michigan weather. I am trying to make ends meet so I can slip away in January but as time goes by other things seem to be stepping up and calling for my attention.

I did do myself a favor and picked up a Sonata Hybrid. I get 40 to 45 miles per gallon on the fuel....such a break from my 14.8 miles in my big truck. I will save in gas what the car cost over a couple of years. I just wanted a Hybrid for so long....it's a little smaller than I would have liked but once in it I have plenty of head room so I am happy.

I hopefully am getting my computer back that went down....my son was able to put in a new hard drive and salvage he said maybe 1/3 of the old one that got fried in the storm. I just hope what is salvageable was the stuff worth saving. My grand daughter just announced yesterday that she is hoping to do three winter shows with her horses. We have never done the winter shows because living in Michigan is pretty hard to keep the horses clean and bathed during the cold. This will be a fun time....since I want to leave the state and she wants me to stay for the shows. See what I mean about things beyond my control coming along.

Anyway I have been up this morning, walked all the dogs....then went to the barn and fed and watered all the horses. I put in a good two hours of moving to get all that done. I am going to sit down here after I eat this bagel and tea to clip all the dogs toe nails. A couple of them are looking pretty scary.

Surprising my sister has turned out to be a big help to me this time around. She has been here over a month and not one argument or confrontation. I knew if she would give in and get on meds it would help and she is a really good person when she isn't being bi-polar or manic depressant. She has more than paid for her room and board by taking care of the laundry and keeping up on the main part of the house. This leaves me time to do so much more out of the house. To make her feel better and have something that she doesn't have to ask for I have just this week offered and started paying her a small salary. It's not much but then I am not rich either. It gives her some cash for Church, personal items, gas when she uses my car to go see her grandkids or kids, and what not. I feel that is only fair even though she is living here for nothing. I don't want her to feel like I am taking advantage of her.

The last time she was here........she stayed about 6 months before she walked out screaming...and everyone but me hoping she would just fall off the face of the earth. All my grandkids would argue with her and my daughter would get into a screaming match with her....my husband was ready to leave home......and I was the referee between everyone. I was told if I brought her back they would all give up on me and never come around.....well for an old lady that knows her kids....that was not going to happen and I hate to be told what I can and can't do by a bunch of grandkids....so I was leery of the drama.....but its worked out great and they are all talking to her and even saying nice things. I have been taking in my sister on and off since we were kids together....so I feel it was a must...this time she agreed that something was wrong with her and she agreed to give in and see a doctor which put her on medication and she gets to see a shrink a couple of times a month. She can vent to her and maybe she will finally come out with some balance. She gave up Drugs and Alcohol about 10 years ago and found Jesus....so we are all on the right page now.

Here I am venting.....good thing I don't have to pay for SHRINK when I can do it for free with all my SPARK friends.

Love you guys.

Joanna, I just read your computer problem on the Wall (I should pay more attention to the wall) that would be frustrating to find a fried computer, hope all is better. I usually use the same two passwords, bad to do I know and I keep usernames and passwords on a sheet of paper, also not good to do. If you find a secret to remember, let me know.

Rainy here, had a pour down early this morning but at least it isn't flooding in my area.

Joanna, sorry things aren't working out in the healthy routine. sometimes that is what we have to do, the 'me' time or what else makes it work to get to where you need to be. I know you can do it. Will you still be on SP while you are away? We should do some challenges on here, would that help in the meantime? I know I can use what I can get.

I know what you mean about going to a gym. We belonged to one once, but just to get dressed, drive there, workout , drive back home.....yeah, been there, done that.

But you are off to a good start recognizing that something needs to be done and working out a plan. One step at a time.

Maybe we can throw out some exercises to be done everyday, to just get something going. If there is anything the team can do to help, let us know.

I want to think I am doing just great but in reality I am not doing all that hot. I set all these wonderful plans and then somewhere down the line they get side stepped and my goals are not being met. I was so gun hoe on getting in shape after my accident. I was going to lose weight and do all my physical therapy so that I could get back on one of my horses. Here I am two years later and I am not better off then when I started. Yes I don't use a walker, or a wheelchair, no cane, and I seem to be getting around on my own. But, and there is always a but, I have lost no weight to speak of 10 lbs here and there maybe but over all it seems like I might have gained more back. I have memberships in several health clubs, Fitness USA, Planet Fitness, Snap, and even at the fitness center where I was doing my physical therapy. The problem is that I don't go. No matter which I chose I have to travel to get to them, and these days that seems like an ordeal. I have nobody to travel with me so there goes my workout buddy system that I was so hoping for. To make matters worse I live with two boys that love to eat in the middle of the night. I am so sick of food yet I eat when its in front of me. It's like I have no will power, yet I feel like I should be able to control it.

I am desperate to get in a healthier situation so I am thinking of leaving home for a few months...just to give me a break away from the routine here. I am not sure that will help me, but I am thinking it might. It might be my ticket to saving my life at this point in time. Winter is coming on and I hate to go out in the cold, my old bones are not what they use to be and all the breaks held together by screws and pins do not react to well to cold. This means I will not get out and drive to any destination unless its an emergency. I could say I will set up and do the exercising at home but I know that will fall through. I won't last long doing that it never works out for me like that. Someone or something requires my attention and therefore I worry about that and not myself.

I am thinking I need to be somewhere I can worry only about myself for a while. Not a week or two on a vacation but somewhere I can be that will seems normal and I can come up with a game plan to get not fit..for that is out of the question, just healthier. Lighter weight so I will not be so hard on my knees, and my damaged foot. So I can enjoy being out with my family and friends. Maybe ride a horse but that is not my main concern right now. If I manage to be able to just spend more time with the horses that will make me happy.

But, here we go with that but again, but, right now I need to sit down and seriously need to take another good long look at what is going on around me and make some changes. Small ones at first until we lead into winter than more serious ones. I am thinking of leaving for 3 to 4 months to travel to Las Vegas and become a snowbird for the winter. I have to wait until January at least the hubby is leaving with half the family to Thailand in December. So maybe January, February, and March I can get away to a warmer climate and nothing going on there that will take away from the ME time. It will be all about me...and getting better. Right now...I have to go back into therapy says my doctor because I am having difficulty walking again. She is putting me into water therapy which is not too bad to handle. I just hope I can stick to it. Running back and forth an hour each way every other day is not my ideal of quality time. I usually hold out for 4 or 5 weeks before I quit, this time I am going to give it the 12 week shot she is requesting, well at least that is my thought for now.

Wish me luck.

Oh no!! Hope that doesn't happen. Without my computer and TV, I'd be lost. We lost power last night, luckily it was around 11:00pm. I turned lights in the off position so they wouldn't be on when power restored, forgot the TV. Power came back on around 12:55am, because the TV came on. So....I got up and watched part of Seth Meyers show.

I woke up to a real chill in the air this morning. Burrrr too soon in the year for this. On another note...it's not about to blow away. I heard on the news that a vortex is bring in a cold front that will be history making. Cold enough to knock out our satellites...no cell phones, no computers, and worse no alarms working. Kind of scary all those alarms that rely on satellite to run. What will people do that spend all their time on Facebook , twitter, and the rest of the media garbage. Hehehe..might be a funny situation.

I am not looking forward to cold....and so soon in the year. This might even damage our final hay crop. I will just have to keep my fingers crossed.

I would love to go to Ireland with you Court...that would be something.

Glad to see you back Joanna, sorry you were so sick, hope you recover fuly. I do miss the change in seasons like the leaves, but not the snow and cold. A little cool weathr is nice, so to wear some of my jackets.
My, it is a busy month with all that going on. We have our 23rd wedding anniversary on the 14th and my b'day on the 17th, but other than that nothing except maybe a few doctor appts. haha

I think I'm finally getting serious about my exercise and eating or at leasting trying to do a better job now.

I found some 3-leaf clovers in the yard yesterday and picked a couple. I want to find a 4-leaf but so far no luck. I pressed the ones I found in a book and want to put them in lamination for a bookmark. Hopefully find the 4-leaf first.

Hey, let's go to Ireland..to the .Nire Valley Autumn Walking Festival

It's been a while since I have made any major post in any of my teams. So I think I might as well sit down and try to catch up at once. Not that there is a lot to catch up on but you never know. Someone out there just might be sitting behind their computer asking what became of Joanna.

I've been sick really sick...with Allergies and a bad sinus cold. It settled in my lungs and turned into ammonia. I am on the upside of recovery now but it took almost a month to get me here. As most of you know I live in the country on a horse farm in Michigan. Just one week into September I can see the trees and landscape change colors. Beautiful gold and red is blossoming right in front of my eyes. The nights are getting cooler and some of my flowers are giving way already. I have one more of HAY to cut in order to have enough to feed all the horses over the winter. However if the sunshine doesn't stay warm enough to dry out the crop once it's cut I could lose the whole thing and be forced to go out and buy hay. I need sunshine and strong wind to help with the fields. I am keeping my fingers crossed. We already lost 1/2 of the second cutting because of the rain. I am so afraid that Winter is coming to early and it's planning on being a hard one.

On a good note walking or riding the trails are beautiful right now. I use a golf cart to run my dogs along the paths of our property and oh my how lovely the colors are looking. After spending two years and over 50,000.00 we can say we no longer have any wire fencing lest on the farm. We are the proud owners of brand new split rail hard wood fencing around all the pastures, arena and grounds. Whoopee!

Show season is over for us...for the year anyway. I am cleaning everything up and putting it in storage for next year. We plan to really go out next year...will be my last year with the girls together so we are going to really do some traveling with the horses. After that I leave it in the hands of he girls...for the traveling part. I will stick to watching the local shows and maybe the nationals if they qualify.

If's official my sister moved in with me...for the final time. If she leaves again that's it for my efforts. Right now it's nice having her. I made sure she went to see the doctor and is now on antidepressants for her bi-polar. She helps me out so much inside the house. She keeps it clean for me...and does all the laundry so just that makes her a treasure. We are a big house here and it takes a lot of work to stay on top of it.

I have a busy September, 4 family birthdays that I have to attend. My oldest grandson is getting married on the 27th, one of my granddaughters just bought her first home and is having a house warming party the week before. Living where I live means a lot of driving to get to all the different venues, but being a good parent and grandparent I will make sure I am there rain or shine.

Hello, it's about to rain here I think but I'm staying indoors. Hope you all have a great weekend and some relaxation.

Just wondering, what is your favorite way to spend the weekend if you didn't have work or errands etc to do and money no concern?

I think I'd like to go back to Kissimmee for thre weekend, to get away for a while and maybe go to a theme park in Orlando.

Hello, so what's new with everyone? I got my new hearing aids, not a big change but different. Sounds are a little more amplified. Cool.

I see Scotland is going through what parts of Ireland went through a while back and we went through, but a little differently since it was in the 1700s. Independence! Big decisions.

DH said he had a treat dessert for me later....Lemon Meringue Pie, yeah, not the healthiest.

Joanna, I saw something on TV about Toledo's water, something about algae, toxin or something. I had an aunt who used to live there. $30 for a 24-pack of water!!! Outrageous!!

California has flooding and fires, Hawaii has two hurricanes. I sure hope we don't get any hurrianes this year.
Earthquake in Africa and China. All of a sudden it seems like disastors all over the place.

Does Ireland get hurricanes?

Court I am doing a lot better, thank goodness. My truck is in the shop being repaired.

I sure agree with you when it comes to being active on the team. I think we would be doing great if everyone just came in once or twice a week. But I see all the new names and not on making any comments. Unfortunately it takes a little bit of commitment if you want something to work.

We have been getting a lot of rain. Some flooding in the area. Toledo Ohio is really in a pickle they have no drinking water or bathing water. Something happen to their water in Lake Erie and their processing plants can not filter it out. The stores are price gouging and charging as much as 30.00 for a 24 pack of water and believer it or not the stores are all out of water. The government is looking into the price gouging. I know my daughter in laws mother had to get water from up here....my son took it 10 cases of water at 2.00 a case. Scary if nothing else. That makes me happy to know I have my own water here in the wells. I heard they even tried to boil it but it was not good enough.

We need to get our hay cut again...this week if we can get some sun shine I am hoping for this cutting and maybe one more before the end of the season. Wish me luck.

Just think what a team we'd have if all the newbies posted. It's the same on other teams I'm on too. If it doesn't seem too active they leave, but if they'd stay it would be more active. (catch-22). I know I don't post as much as I should and not a good co-leader, sorry.
I do appreciate all who are on this team. I still hope the others will come back.

Hope everyone has a good week.

Joanna, how are you and your sister doing since the wreck?

Rua, what has been new with you, how's the weather in Ireland? It's our rainy season here in Florida.

Boy, to watch the news is really depressing with fires and flooding in California and other places flooding. News said earthquake in Africa and I think I read China had one?

No I was lucky and I agree I am almost afraid to leave my house right now. I think I need a tank to drive around to keep me safe. I do feel a little battered and bruised like I was thrown against the wall but other than that so far nothing too serious.

Waiting to get my truck fixed now.

Joanna, Oh my gosh, two wrecks! I'd be afraid to be on the road again too. Glad you aren't seriously hurt this time.

I was taking my sister home a couple of days ago and pulled over into a turn lane with my blinker on to make a right turn onto a private street off a main one. While turning a security truck came along and hit me in the rear end and sent me 30 feet up on the pavement and crosswalk. It happen so fast I didn't have time to think, but once it was over I couldn't move. My head went back to the awful accident I had back in 2010 what shattered my leg in 17 different places. I was so grateful to be in my big FORD 350 if I was in a smaller vehicle I would have hated to see the damage it did.

I think I am ok, just beat up and battered a little and more shaken up than anything, but my truck needs to be put in the shop and my driving is put on hold. I am scared to get in a vehicle right now.

Can you imagine a taken like truck ramming you from behind. It's like "What were they thinking?"

It's been a long weekend and I am so tired, but ready for the new week I guess. I have tons of things on my agenda this week. The sad part is that time is going by so fast I am not really getting a chance to enjoy it.

Over here I see Sean a lot. Before I knew how it was pronounced I saw an actor Sean Bean. Well....I knew something wasn't right. Then I realized Sean was pronouced Shawn. I have seen Sean as Shawn, but not Shamus around my parts. Maybe somewhere else. I've never seen or head of anyone named Sinead except on TV.

I'd love to call my DH Seamus since his name is James, but nada. He doesn't even like the name Jamie, which is what his mom was going to call him.

I wish I could find a Caitlin in my family tree but I still can't find my Irish. Someone did going back to 1300s but I can't trace that far back so won't count that. I think I saw some mistakes in dates anyhow. I'll keep looking. I know it is an old name as Dylan Thomas' wife was called Caitlin.

I like that name Aoife (Eef-a)

I never knew that different languages pronounced letters differently until I studied German. I admire anyone who can learn our language.

Joanna, how's it going today?

I think the anglicisation thing usually occurs the other way - people change how the name is spelt, and pronounce it the same way. I have seen Shamus, Shawn, and Shinade. Some of them would sound very funny if their pronunciation was anglicised: -

See-mus
See-oh-ban
Sin-ee-ad
Say-o-erss-ee

I wonder how they would deal with Aoife, (pr. Eef-a), or Caoimhe, (pr. Kee-va).

I have an American friend who wanted to call his daughter Niamh, but his wife, while she liked the sound of the name, thought people in the US would be confused by the spelling. They compromised by registering the child as 'Niamh', but spelling it 'Neeve' for everyday life.

No, I don't have that key. I never heard of it. I found the alt and codes for the fadas etc when I was studying German.

I wish I could get those who call me Caitlin to use the correct pronouciaiton, after all, you never hear the name Sean pronounced like bean. I don't know how they decided to americanize it when they don't to other Irish names Like Seamus, Sinead (shin + aid), Saoirse (sear + sha) and Siobhan pronounced Shavon. Why Americanize Caitlin??? If I'd known in the beginning I'd have everyone say it like the Irish.
