Yeah, I agree with Kourtney...but you can understand I'm not commenting on the MIL situation - sigh

Laurie - tehe I love Simon's cat. I follow them on youtube LOL. WOO HOO on that swim AND on the awesome job offer!!! So happy for you!!! I hope I have similar news in a week or so. Man that'd be awesome. On the opposite side of the spectrum, that's terrible about your former MIL - it was so sweet of you to visit her.

My plans with my friend have been moved to tonight. She's staying over and I"ll drive her home in the morning after knitting.

"All" is right. I have 11 references on my reference page. He either called or emailed all of them. Who does that? I'm not complaining, I just can't believe he took the time to do that. Cautious is okay. Cautious is better than hiring without thought. At least he knows I'm not hiding anything. Brings to mind people who get positions as surgeons without attending a single minute of medical school LOL Now THAT'S careless hiring!

Laurie - I agree that you new boss is just a newbie. That's the feel I got from the start and why I was saying "jump". These are usually the very best of the best because it means he isn't guarded and you will learn way more than you would elsewhere and you'll get paid. AND if you go in with a plan and execute it, he sounds like the type who will pay you more. AND if you are willing to negotiate your pay and have a plan and reasoning for that, you will get paid more. It's his cautiousness and calling all your references that was the last clue to me.

Kourtney - All cats are psycho. It's hardwired. They are the center of the universe. When she was crying about her buddy cat she was telling you to fix her world - dumb human. Loved Laurie's take!

I know that Martino will always be connected to our family. He won't remember to communicate, just like my son, but he'll know we're here and that's enough.

Carol, I know you'll keep in touch with him. Even if he can't come now to finish out his exchange program, I agree with Kourtney. He'll be back at some point, even if it's just to visit.

Kourtney: Cat, you are on my computer.
Cat: Yes? And your point is?
Kourtney: You are in my way!
Cat (in a haughty voice): That is because you are to pay attention to ME now, not your silly computer.

LOL... have you seen Simon's Cat? Check it out, it's hilarious. www.simonscat.com/

Got my swim in (2000 yards, yay!), picked up my book, and stopped to visit my former MIL, who is in the hospital after breaking her hip. She is doing very well, recovering nicely, but it will be a long road for her. She's 83 and they are being very cautious. She can't put any weight on that leg for at least a month. Then they have to figure out where she should go after. She's been living with my ex and wants to go back there, but he has stairs to get into the house and they will have to do something to make it easier for her to manage them. Once she's in the house, there are no more stairs. But he also has a standard bathtub which might need to be replaced with a walk-in with a seat, and they will have to install bars. It's doable, just costs money. Another option is to have her move in with a daughter, but they are afraid she will take total control and take away all of her freedom. Or assisted living, which she definitely does not want. But... I'm no longer a part of that family, so I have no say in the matter.

Annnnnddddd..... when I got home, there was an email waiting for me with more details about this job. It is a solid offer, in writing. This is like a dream job for a law clerk. I will learn the world of estate planning and administration, the pay is better (a little), there is promise for more money and hours after a review period. Plus he only wants me there 4 days a week to start. Maybe with that extra day I can actually work on my grades????? AND... my start time is 9:30 am... meaning I can get back to morning workouts! I am stoked. There are a couple of details to iron out, but I am definitely going to accept it. He is saying I should plan to start Jan 30, but as far as I'm concerned, I don't need more than two weeks notice at the old job. For all I know, they'll fire me after I give my notice anyway.

Carol, do you agree that it's a bit unusual to phrase a compensation offer in terms of both salary and hourly? It's a little odd, and frankly protects me more than him, but I think he's just not used to hiring people so making offers is new to him.

Carol - I am so sorry to hear about Martino's father. My thoughts are with him and your family. I hope that, after he has had some time to process his father's death, he'll be able to come back to you guys. I doubt you've seen him for the last time.

Laurie - so glad you got some sleep!!!! I hope your friend is ok. *hugshard* ROCK that productive day!

Shirley - go you!

Hi all! Woke up late. The scale is being the same as yesterday, which is annoying. Why the heck am I up half a pound when I've been rocking my food and workouts. Mer. I know it shouldn't matter but it's freaking aggravating. I also forgot to do my abs yesterday. Grrr. I'm going to do them in a few minutes and again later this afternoon, but all of this has put me into a mood.

My cat is encroaching on my area. She was just sitting next to me but in the time it's taken me to catch up from yesterday and today, she's halfway over my computer now. She's making it very difficult to type, and she doesn't seem the least bit sorry about it.

I have a friend coming in from Palo Alto this afternoon. We haven't decided what we're doing yet, but I'm partial to making this new countertop thingie for the kitchen and cooking a bit. I'm hoping to avoid eating out b/c of the expense and calories. We may also go for a hike, just have to wait and see.

Alrighty, off to do last night's abs. xoxo

Thanks Laurie. You are such a great and comforting friend. It's such a tough situation all the way around. To feel so much for a kid so quickly tells you something of him. It will be a tough decision and I'll agree and support whatever he decides. Last week he wrote and I could tell in his heart of hearts he had decided not to come back. That may change now that his father has died, but that will only make the decision more difficult and I wish that were not the case.

Aww, Carol... I am SO very sorry to hear about Martino's father. No, you're right, it's not fair. And he is faced with a tough decision. But I can tell you that as the parent of a son who traveled out of the country, I would encourage him to come back, when he's ready. Obviously he needs time to process the loss of his father and at least begin his grieving process. And he'll want to make sure his mother is doing the same thing. But you pointed out that he is only 17. He has the right -- and the responsibility -- to be a teenager, live his life, and do the things that make him happy. He seemed wonderfully happy staying with you, it was a terrific experience for him, and if I were the dying parent, I would want him to get back to that. I hope he sees his way clear to coming back.

Laurie - I hope you hear from him soon, but I won't be surprised to hear that you had to take the initiative. I think calling your friend's boss is a great idea, that's too long to go without a response. I have been known to fall off the planet, but a second email always gets a response.

Shirley - Congratulations on running your first 5k! That's a real milestone! Just keep it up and it will get easier. It's amazing what a little time and distance will do for you. How is your foot holding up?

We found out today that Martino's father has died. Poor, poor boy. At seventeen, that's just not fair. It's terrible too that he has to make a decision about whether or not to come back here. I can't imagine what he's been going through.

Carol... I agree, those are the very best jobs. I get to create it my own way. The "clear vision" part is what's lacking at the moment. I was hoping to have an email from him this morning, but it isn't here. I hope I didn't scare him off giving him an "assignment." If I don't get an email over the weekend, I think I'll call Monday morning and suggest another meeting.

I went to bed at 10 last night and slept straight through till 6. Finally!

Today I have lots of reading and the research to wrap up for my boss. Plus laundry and swimming and pick up a book at the bookstore. And so it begins.

I have a friend I'm very concerned about. I sent her an e-card just before Christmas and she never even picked it up. I've emailed her twice since then and she hasn't responded, and I've left a messages on both her cell phone and her work phone. Also no response. This is just not like her. So I'm worried. I contacted another mutual friend on FB and she hasn't heard from her either. It looks like the last correspondence either of us got from her was around Halloween. If I don't hear from her over the weekend, I've decided to call her boss Monday. We used to work together, so he'll remember me, and if something's going on, he should tell me about it.

Off to the grind now....

Happy Saturday everyone! What are your plans for today? I plan to go to the beach. Yesterday it was 80 degrees when we left LA, it was cooler up the coast here but still a pretty nice day. It's only supposed to get up in the 60s today, which is nice enough for a long walk on the beach.
