Lynn: agreed! Degrees aren't useless at all. They are needed in some fields.

Laurie: I have the same issue with some of the people I have class with. I just want to go in the class, get through what we have to get through of course while having fun. But if for some reasons there's a day when I don't want to be there I won't be rude to others. This is one reason why I like online classes. I can still work towards the degree but at the same time what I put in is what I get out.

LAURIE....DH would tell us it's the same with MBA students. Shortly after we were married, he went back to get his MBA on his employer's coin. One day, he came home after class and told me about this annoying student who wore a T Shirt that said, "MBA...Most Bucks Anywhere!" How arrogant! He said the same thing....some hot shot punks thinking just b/c they were getting an MBA, they were guaranteed fame and fortune. Dim wits!

Okay, I don't really "hate" school, but it is a total drag. The only thing that keeps me going is knowing there's a good payoff at the end.

The biggest issues are the fact that they throw all the eggs in one basket at the end of the semester. Your entire grade is based on one final exam. Make or break. It sucks. And every law school in the country is the same way. What's really scary is that the bar exam is basically pass-fail. It isn't about excellence at all. It's all about minimum competency. And this is where our legal system gets its advocates.

Personally, it's hard for me to deal with a lot of my younger classmates. They have no clue what's out there. Lynn is concerned that her son isn't ready for a baby... these people aren't ready for ANYTHING. They will be the ones with the JD degree and the hot job, but they don't possess a lick of common sense. They make me crazy to be around, and it isn't just the ignorance. Ignorance can be fixed. What can't be fixed is the arrogance that they think they know it all, even though they know NOTHING. "I'm a young, hip, hot law student, and I'm gonna be rich and famous and make a six figure salary right out of law school because I know it all!" Yeah... good luck kiddo.

My personal friends aren't like that. I have one who is married with two kids and struggling to make ends meet, I have another that works 60 hours a week as an accountant, I have another who is a single mom who works full time and never gets to see her son, I have another who is my daughter's age and still lives with her parents, but she keeps asking me questions about job hunting and managing life with a full time job. In other words, she knows nothing, and KNOWS she knows nothing. So she asks. Those are the kinds of people I enjoy being around. They either know what real life is like or they ask, and they haven't had their lives handed to them on a silver platter. The rest of them can go to .... elsewhere....

Okay, stepping down off my soapbox now. Gotta get back to the books anyway :-)

TONYA....WELL SAID! Not to say that an education is useless.....Totally agree with you that it should NOT define a person! I know people who have not ONE single college credit to their name but are incredibly smart and have extremely good common sense. Then there are others that have a gazzilion letters behind their name but couldn't tie their shoes if their life depended on it! Still, degrees are necessary and rightfully so as many positions do require such knowledge. But I agree with you totally that our society places too much emphasis on defining a person by the degrees they hold.

Lynn, thanks!

Carol: what would you get a third one in?

Laurie: why do you hate school?

I wish I could say I love going to school but that is not really the case. Not that I hate it but there are some things that come along with school that I could do without but I love to learn! I just don't like how a piece of paper can make or break someone. I don't like defining people based on a degree. What about the people who are very knowledgeable because they took the time to learn? Or what about the people who have many degrees and everyone wonders how they got them? In my opinion society puts so much emphasis on learning only in school. I believe learning can happen anywhere and as long as the person can apply the skills for the job that's enough for me. As long as I live I'll keep learning.

I will have three degrees when all is said and done, but none of them are masters... go figure. LOL Two bachelors and a JD. Of course if I can't get focused here, the JD may never happen!

Ummm...I can see three master's... I've been talking about my next one. I love going to school. But I'll probably be too practical and besides, I love working too.

You all could be like my one friend and have 3 masters degrees. She always has to dummy down her resume' because she looks over qualified for just about everything. But the truth of the matter is, she just plain LOVES school. LOVES to study, etc. She missed her calling. She should have either become a college professor (and she has taught some college classes and loved it, but couldn't get anything permanent) or something in research.

Hats off to you all for studying hard no matter what stage of life you are in.

I have had a productive evening!!!! Thank goodness for good podcasts b/c otherwise I probably would've gone INSANE. After we took the cats to the vet (and they were very good) I dropped Mike off at school, got a coffee, and started cleaning. I cleaned my office heavily and now all my school stuff is organized and my desk is USEABLE again, as are my shelves, and it's gorgeous. It took about 2 1/2 hours and I'm extremely proud of it. I'm going to gradually do a ton of laundry tonight and get that out of the way as well, just chilling out while the loads go rather than trying to do more so that I don't wear myself out or make myself too moody. Mike is going to pick up all the trash around the apartment sometime this evening and that should help things look better overall.

Tomorrow, I plan to do all the dishes (omg how do we have so many already?) and then majorly clean the bathroom and stove (if you have any ideas for this, I would LOOOVE to hear them b/c our stove is perpetually gross looking). While I'm doing that, hopefully I can get Mike to get a new tire for the car and new headlights. But before all that, I'm getting up early to do some lower body ST/pushups/crunches and then going knitting. :D

Off to eat some leftovers for dinner. XOXO

Carol: I agree lifelong learning is a good thing, however, I hope to be done with getting degrees way before 2030! We'll see how I feel once my masters is done. I know I'll take classes here and there and kept up-to-date with training and such for children but more degrees... I can't call it. Time will time. For now my focus is getting through the rest of this semester and into the next one.

Lynn - I agree with that old addage and there is nothing better than being able to hold a baby. It doesn't matter where you are in life once you hold that precious bundle and squeeze those little fat feet. The job and car and health insurance issues sound pretty sucky...but - awww baby!

I know I should go in about this foot thing...but it was healing so nicely until I tried to kill it with that hike. I'll give it another two weeks and then go in if it isn't better.

Toya - I think lifelong learning is a good thing, 2030 it is! It sounds like a good plan you've got, especially for the current times. Most of our PE teachers are teaching math or English and then one PE class.

Laurie - I'm happy for you that you got something done! I'm painting my bedroom, so even though I'm procrastinating on studying...at least I'm getting something done.

The due date is June 26. Seems far off and seems too fast all at once. Ha.... I did see her picture (the mom) and she sure is cute. We look forward to meeting her. Her mother (not sure about her dad...he died from cancer a few years ago) is from the Philippines. She's the same age as my son and has a brother the same age as my older son.

Did a great bike ride (but didn't have time to buy the shoes). Rode almost 20 miles in some pretty windy weather. Windy as it was, there wasn't a head wind. Could never understand that. Some days, there's no wind until you get on the bike and face a head wind. Then, on a windy day, there is no head wind. Huh? Would love to know the science behind that one!

Carol: I was running like crazy but to health issues I have to take a break. My major was physical education because I thought it would be so good to put the two things I love together: health/fitness and teaching However, theres less money to go around in that department So Im working on my degree in Early Childhood Education and will do my personal training stuff later. I'm thinking I'll go back to get another degree in physical education after I have a job or maybe I'll be so tired of school by then I'll go for the certificate. We'll see because as it stands now I'll be in school until like 2030 getting a PHD, lol. Best wishes with your foot!

Lynn: I have never heard of it. I am curious as to what brands and styles people get. Not that I would buy them but just to have another idea. Its so easy to go with the mainstream and if Im going to pay for it I mind as well get the best bang for my hard earned bucks! Congrats, on the baby! When is she due again?

Kourt: I was thinking of heading to a regular sneaker store and seeing what brand they offer and how my feet like them. There is a specialty sneaker store around but its far and would have to be an all-day event. The rule in own family is if its far that has to be other things we need in the area. Im thinking I might be able to break that rule once after I get that wonderful four point zero. Well see until then I wont be doing much running.

Well, there is some truth to the adage that if we all waited till we could "afford it" then nobody would ever have any babies and the population would die out. I'm sure it would have been better to wait (it usually is!), but that option's gone now. I just know they will make the best of it. I can't remember if you said.... when is the blessed event supposed to happen?

Okay, I'm done. Had it. Kaput. Kourtney got online and yelled at me to get off Spark and study. So I did, and I actually managed to get some things done. Thanks Kourt! But now I'm hungry for dinner and I have a headache starting, so I'm packing up and going home. I will hopefully get a little more done after dinner and tomorrow morning. Can't go swimming till noon anyway.

Toya.... I'm trying to read what brand it is....but it's worn. It was like, "Bowermans?" "Bormans?" Anyone on here know? It's a neutral shoe though. You know, there are three different types and I'm not sure what type you are. Any running store would be able to figure that out for you though. Depending on your arch and if you pronate, rotate, etc....depends what type of shoe you need. Neutral, Stability and motion control are the three types...and then there are the vibrams and similar products if you want to go that way (I've yet to bite the bullet). So my type might not work for you. It's worth the money to get what works best for your foot and buy from a reputable running store. Once you find what works, you can see if you can get it cheaper online, or in a discount store. Best wishes!

CAROL...I think I'd cave in by now and see an ortho and if it's not fractured, get some therapy on that puppy. It seems like its' been a while now. Dog gone age thing....we don't seem to bounce back as fast as we once did. But many times, therapy does help speed things up. Just finished a round myself for that plantar fasciitis. I'm about 98% healed. He said to go two weeks now with just the exercises and if zero progress or no progress, come back for more....but that usually, 98% will hit 100 in due time. Anyway...I sure hope you get better soon. What a pain....LITERALLY!

KOURT.... I think she and all of us would be happier if he were in a better position to have a baby. His college debit is insane...needs a new car, needs health insurance, needs all kinds of stuff....But it is what it is and what's done is done....they'll have to make it work and we are just trying to give him a positive outlook. Guess my MIL took it better than DH thought...so that is a good thing. :)

Shirley - hehehe I don't think that will work. It's alright, he covers for me when I'm busy too.

Laurie - It's such a pain having a study buddy sometimes, but then when they're not there it's sooo hard to get motivated. Nikes were too big inmy toes too.

Carol - :( I'm sorry. Did you get that xray? I bet it'll be easier once your Italian is gone and not tempting you with fun trips. *hugs*

So chatty today! :D Makes me happy!

Mike and I hung out all morning doing nothing, but now we have to start being produtive. We have 2 hours before we have to take the cats to the vent and we *should* be productive, but we'll probably avoid it until after the vet LOL. Then I'm gonna drop him at lab to write and I'm gonna clean something. Not sure what yet. Maybe I'll start with the office - I think that's been driving him the most insane.

I refuse to discuss running with my foot still messed up (grrrrr). No, not really refusing. I wear barefoot runners. With how messed up my left side is, my sports doc believes that I should stick with shoes that are as non-invasive as possible and it's worked for me. I wear Nike Free and also the hideously ugly FiveFingers by Vibram...or, if I'm on the beach my feet go naked. But getting professionally fitted (or in my case, being seen by a doc) is a good use of resources since running is a pounding sport.

Kourtney - My foot sucks. sigh I want it to be better...but I can't seem to stay off of it enough to let it happen. I am just too stupid. 13 hours of sleep sounds like it should help...that and a good book. Give congrats from me to your boy! That's wonderful that he's doing that well.

Laurie - I'm not studying today either...I should be...but I'm not. So I don't think I'm qualified to come kick your @ss. I vote you avoid your boys in favor of daydreaming...hmmm, I'm probably not helping.

Toya - Are you doing much running? Are you still working at becoming a personal trainer?

Shoop - Yeah, what are you cooking?

Ditto Kourtney on the shoes. It's very personal. And the idea about getting fitted at a running store is right on. They will evaluate your stride and make recommendations, and then have you try on different pairs and run on a treadmill. I have a pair of Mizuno's (couldn't tell you which one lol) and I love them. By contrast, I couldn't wear the Asics they recommended, or the Nike's, because they were too tight in the toes. See? Very personal.

I got my run in. Well, half run/half walk. I don't know if I'll swim tomorrow or not. Right now I'm sitting in the library, looking out the window at a gorgeous day. I've been here almost an hour and have yet to drag a single book out of my bookbag. My "study buddy" is not here and I'm not sure if she's coming. She had some things to do with her family, and she has all day tomorrow to study, while I do not.

Totally. Unmotivated. But if I go home it won't be any better. And I will have to listen to my BF's son whine about having to clean and to my BF yelling at him to stop whining and start cleaning. And the dogs. Not to mention the fridge calling my name. At least here it's quiet and there's no food. Although I am tempted to go to the ASP office and see if she's left out any candy.

Lynn - I hope the talk with the grandmother goes better than expected. Will she have such a hard time for religious reasons? *hugs* I'm sorry for all the extra stress going on right now. I hope your ride is wonderful. And thank you for asking about how I'm feeling! I'm doing a little better this morning, likely b/c I slept 13 hours last night AND I took medicine only 4 hours ago LOL.

Laurie - good luck studying. *hugs* Can you fit in a swim or something today maybe, since tomorrow's out?

Carol - you are such a busy bee! Miss you xoxo. How's your ankle?

Toya - I've found for me that shoe purchasing is really personal depending on how you run. As costly as it can be, I've had the best luck going to a runners shop and having them help me select a pair. I have great luck with Asics (they just fit my foot right) andmy current pair is the GT-2160's. I got them for I think 60 or 70 bucks and I trained for the HM and beyond with those suckers. Love. Them. Anyway, I'd recommend heading out to a specialty running shop and having them help you find a pair. And if their prices are outrageous, you can always "think on it" and find the same pair online LOL.

Morning all. I'm doing a bit better today, although this is likely b/c I just slept for 13+ hours and took medicine at 6am. Now I'm chillin' out with my cats, waiting for Mike to wake up. We have vet appointments for the kittehs in several hours. He has to have a really productive writing weekend (NSF Fellowship Application due Tuesday) so I'm guessing I'm on my own for the cleaning. His presentation early this week went wonderfully by the way. He's really proud of how well he did, he got a LOT of compliments about his presentation style being very engaging and interesting (which is rare in a science speech lol) and one of the guys from his Qual committee came up and told him he felt he did a great job (which will hopefully give him a little leeway for his qual). :D I'm very proud of him.

Lynn: I'd like to know what the name is. I need new shoes and very soon! I don't really like going shopping though so I think I'm going to order the same ones I have now online in the same color.

Carol: I need to buy three or four pairs at the same time too! Good idea.

Thanks for starting the thread! It can be hard when you stay up late to then get up early enough to start a thread for you east coasters! I have three extra boys sleeping over and I think I'll make Belgian waffles...since one of them is Belgian. I sure do love cooking for boys!

Lynn - A babvy is always a wonderful miracle! How exciting for you...even if the timing isn't perfect for them, sometimes it just works out that way. Awww, I love babies! I (run) through shoes quickly too. When I buy them I usually buy 3 or 4 pairs if I love the shoe.

Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!

Thanks, Shoop.... Enjoy your ride as well!

FIT...Not sure what kind yet. Usually, my best bet is a certain line of Nike that's named after some guy. I can never remember the name unless I look inside my shoe. I should google his name....Not sure why they name it after him. I burn through running shoes early. When they give a range, 300-500 miles before replacing, I'm right at the 300 miles. The shoes will look great, but something inside is wearing just a little and will cause my body to ache from the hips on down! Once I get new shoes, it disappears. Go figure?!?!?!?! Most people say their knees start to ache when needing new shoes. That is the only part on me that doesn't ache. I am a weirdo! Ha....

LAURIE..Hope you get lots done today. Your plate sure looks full.

KOURT...I know you haven't been on yet, but I see you are still under the weather. Hope you are feeling better soon!

Good morning.
500 jobs, that's awesome. Hope hubby can get some rest. Your day sounds wonderful. What kind of running shoes are you thinking of buying?
I'm going to workout on the Wii; we'll see how much and what games I play since Im so sore from yesterday's massage. Then I'll make some breakfast (most likely a not so cold smoothie) and attend a Spark Live meeting online at 10am. Sweetie and I are going to see a play today, and then Ill hit the books and turn in my school work.
Have a wonderful day all!!
Shoop: what are you cooking?

Good Morning All....

I know people are super busy and it's hard to get a thread going on weekends and even sometimes weekdays. So I'm up and about and thought I'd get one going. :)

It'll be in the mid to upper 50s today and sunny, so hoping to get a bike ride in. I'm an NS widow these days (my husband's employer taking too much of his time these days). Hubby works for a train company marketing the RR. The trains are backed up for miles and there are not enough trailers to get the containers off the train and onto trucks. In spite of all the bad news in the economy, production is apparently up...way up! I hope this spills into retailers and the like to hire more people. DH's RR is hiring 500 more people to work on the RR. They can barely keep up with the business. Just seems like employers on average are getting used to going with less people and overloading work onto the people they have. Yuck!!

While DH goes up and visits his mom, I'm staying behind. He's going to break the news to her about my son and his girlfriend expecting a baby. She won't take that news well. So I plan to ride the bike and hope to get out and buy some new running shoes.

What are you all up to today?
