I don't think I've stopped in to chat since I first joined this team. I've hit a plateau for the last month. I think that's because my body is adjusting to the lesser weight. I track all my foods and nutrition and I try to exercise whenever I am physically able. I have noticed in the past I drop weight like from 183 to 179 then I bounced a couple of lbs. back and forth for a couple of months then the next big drop to 172 and bounce back and forth a couple of lbs. again and then another big drop to 169. This has been my weigh loss till I am now at 143 or 145 depending on my water retention. I also am at the point now that is the lowest weigh I have been at since I was in my mid twenties over 40 years ago so I guess my fat has been around so long it doesn't know it's supposed to leave now. I am planning that as soon as our weather her warms up a bit more I will be spending more time outside gardening and that will help jumpstart the next amount of weightloss.

To me HEALTH means Energy. Stamina. Flexibilty. A relatively pain free body. Enjoying healthy food.

Got to drink more water here.

Well, it is starting to look more like spring. We had one day where the temp went up to 76 degrees and sunny. the very next day it got down to 20 and it snowed 2 inches. Weird.

Pauline-
I started using NIOXIN shampoo, conditioner & spray in product. After a few days I noticed that the hair I was pulling out while washing dropped to about 1/2. This is in addition to the biotin that I started taking a few weeks before.

Now that taxes are behind us for the year, I'm working on reducing my stress. This year has been a real nail biter! emoticon

Today's focus: Eat healthy foods in 'reasonable' portions. Drink water. Take a walk.

I'm keeping it simple.

Happy Day!

My surgeon told me that the hair loss from the surgery is normal it is due mainly to the stress your body goes through for the surgery. Mine is just now starting to grow a little-it had stopped growing and had been coming out via lots on my hair brush. It doesn't do that anymore. It just slowed it's growing. The doctor put me on biotin.

What does your doctor say about your problem? Also spend the $$$ to buy a good shampoo with lots of nutrients. It may help. I use living proof brand and it has been very good for my hair.

Thanks Cindy. I am actually back to normal food. I am about nine months out of surgery. I was not eating meat very well but now I am so I hope that will help. I was low in magnesium and potassium but my magnesium level is ok now. Potassium still a little low.I am reading all the advice I am being offered which are very great. This a great place to be. Thanks again.

Do not dispair once your nutrients are back to normal your hair will return. I suspect that you are still drinking mostly shakes as you are still loosing fast. You really need to speak with your doctor about moving to a healthier food plan. Protein drinks are great as an occassional supplement but they do not provide good quality nutrients when used as the primary source of nutrients for your body.

The most common cause of hair loss according to my naturopath and my chinese medicine dr (I see him for acupuncture) and lack of nail strength is lack of good quality iron/ferritin containing protein. Iron Supplements help unless you are like me and do not absorb iron well.
Eating a variety of "real" food helps too as "real" food is the best source of nutrients.

It is far less common to have the cause be B-vitamin related. Biotin is another one that people say causes hair loss but you need so little of that it is usually not the direct cause.

Have you had a full bloodwork done to check your all nutrient levels? It is usually done somewhere btwn 3 and 6 months. Then annually unless the dr finds you are low in a nutrient. If your dr is one who does not deal with vitamins and supplements then go to a naturopath to have your vitamins and supplements checked. There are some really good ones who will work with your traditional dr.

I have a great medical team and my naturopath, acupuncture dr(chinese medicine dr), and primary care and a few other specialty doctors all work well together to provide me with the best of all forms of medicine.

cindy

Calcium or again the iron can cause weakness in the fingernails. I was just put on a new supplement for my low cortisol levels in the morning. I was surprised how shiny my hair has become and my fingernails look great. I will not tell you what supplement mix because it really needs to be monitored by a professional so as not to harm your organs.

Everyone is doing so great on their journey. I am a few days from nine months on my journey. I was 330 at my highest and went into surgery at 296. I am now at 217.

My problem is that I am losing hair and I wonder if I can get some advice at what to do to help my hair. In fact my fingers keep breaking off too. I take my vitamins and I take biotin but maybe I am using the wrong brands.

Can I please get some advice? Thanks.

I have been getting exercise in every day which is very helpful to my mood. Also getting in extra water each day is a good thing also.

Tonight, I will be going to a Support Group. I need it badly. My mind wears me out. Naps are a great idea. I have stuck to the soft foods diet and on Friday, I start introducing foods and cant wait. The doctor is not worried at all that the scale isnt moving, I just wish it would... :)

It was the best $23k I ever spent in my life!!!!! I would do it again if I had to. Having problems with the preop diet now are not so bad...you just want to make sure you stay strict the last few days before. I had my surgery in June of 2006. There is not 1 day that goes by that I am not happy I did it.

Keep your head up....we all slip up. I am back here because I started to gain weight back and don't want to slip out of control...

We can help each other along the way. I was lucky enough to have family members that went through the surgery before me, and everytime i started worrying that something was wrong, they were there to assure me it was normal and they went through it too...

If I can be that person for you, I would love to help you through it!

I will make sure I say my prayers for you on the 17th!

Lord, help me to make this the last time!!! :)

Diintrp, I too had a very rough first 3-months post RNY surgery. During the early months it is a full time job to drink, eat, and walk (or other allowed exercise). Be sure to take short naps as your energy goes fast when you are eating so little nutrients.
Try to write down what you are eating and how it makes you feel. In this way you can begin to determine which foods you can and cannot eat. On foods that disagree retry the food in a couple of weeks or the next month as disagrees with the pouch today the pouch may love tomorrow.

If you continue to feel down contact the counselor who did your pre-surgery eval or some other counselor. This is a big change and sometimes we all need a little help.
I wish I had started seeing my counselor before surgery but alas I found him at 2 years post-surgery. He has really been a blessing to me. Plus my accupuncture and naturopaths who have also worked hard to help me with stress and anxiety and even some mild depression.

Good luck and I hope this week is easier for you.

Feeling a bit better today. Yesterday & today I was able to get outside and go for a bike ride. It was nice to get out in the sunshine. The bike rides were a bit tough, but a good kind of tough. When I got home today I also did a 30 min strength training DVD.
When I weighted in this morning I had dropped below 200! I have not seen a 1 at the beginning of my weight in over 18 years!

Keeping a journal should help as well. Writing down your feelings, etc in them as you go along as well as the measurements, weights, before and after pictures and updating pictures as you go along.

We all have weeks like that sometimes. Remember it is in the past and cannot be changed. What can be changed is when you get tomorrow, write 5 positive things you can say about yourself to yourself on post-it notes. Put these messages up. In the kitchen put reminder notes on the refrigerator and cupboards. The reminders say something like " Stop is this part of todays food plan!" or "Stop, Is this food a healthy choice" "Stop, If you eat this you will need to do xx minutes of exercise" The notes sound silly but they work. The 5 positive things you need to read out loud to yourself at least 3 times a day and any time when you realize that you are feeling down. Positve Affirmations only work when we say them with conviction outloud to ourself multiple times a day for at least a month. If you do not know what to write go to the bookstore or online and look at positive affirmation books.
Feeling positive will help you with motivation. Feeling down and being tired usually go together. Exercise helps drive those feelings away and positive affirmations replace the negative things we say to ourselves so easily.

Just concentrate on doing the best you can today. Yesterday is gone and cannot be changed so let it go. (I still work on this every day). Tomorrow is not yet here so let it come when it comes. No, I will start tomorrow. Instead I will start now at this moment to do ......

Good luck.

cindy

Been a while since I checked in. Hit two years out and put on the dreaded 10 lbs. Fighting to not gain more and having a horrible time taking it back off. Loose 5 over a few weeks and put it back on over a weekend. With spring arriving, I am trying to get out and move more. Made the big mistake of adding in crackers which morphed to pushing bread and then trying what else I might be able to handle...needless to say the weight came back fast and with a vengeance. Time to get back on track.

Had my three month check up. Sounds like I am on target for this point. They were pleased with my loss and self reports. Asked that I contact a promise center in the mid-west when we move.

Had a great day today. I did an hour of Toning Yoga & could feel it in my legs all day! My mom, daughter & I all went shopping all day to find a dress for my daughter to wear to her Confirmation in May. We did find some really nice choices. I didn't sit much today which was interesting for me, I usually am the first one looking for a chair & am ok with sitting on the floor in stores also if I am bored!

Good ideas. I do have legs up at home. Yesterday I read in bed and tonight I used a recliner which seems to be helping the swelling. I know I have a tendency not to drink when traveling but will try to have more on return trip. Thanks

Smilingeyes, My doctor always told me when traveling to up my liquid and decrease sodium for a few days to help flush everything out of my system. I was told long ago (I have problems with reflux in my leg veins) that when I fly or when on vacation to do a lot of walking and that I am to increase water intake, decrease sodium. On a plane I was told to walk a little every 30 minutes (get up on the plane and walk up and down the aisle every 30 minutes and every 15 minutes at least stand and stretch for a couple of minutes. It worked.back then and still works today. I was also told to elevate my legs in the evening and at night in bed.
You may want to try this yourself.

I have had the strangest thing happen the last 2 days....I have woken up fully rested BEFORE my alarm goes off! The 1st time it happened I woke up an entire hour early-so I actually got out of bed & did a 30 min power yoga video. The 2nd day was 20 min early, so got up and got ready & had breakfast without feeling stressed.
This is so strange to me because I have been exhausted so much lately...wondering if this will continue or not....

Not sure how my weight will be this week. I have not been able to have legs up with all my walking and travel. My lower legs seem swollen even with support hose. My lower digestive track is slow. I know my calorie intake is within guidelines. See my surgeon Thursday.

It's been a good day! Nutrition levels all where they should be and walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes! Now to relax and do some knitting!

It is my intention to live a healthy life with

Carol, I am so jealous! I wish I could move further south and get away from cold winters but then I would miss the changing seasons.

Changeto180, Do not even try a bite of bread, cracker, cake.... It is like an alcoholic taking a first drink after years of sobriety. You go back to where you left off quickly. I know I tried the crackers and the bite of cake. Then it was well what happens if I try a second bite. It is a slippery slope that is best avoided by not taking the first taste to see if you get sick.

Went to my nephews birthday party today. I knew that lunch was a build your own pizzas, so I made sure to have a high protein breakfast. Pizzas went well. The only problem I had was when cake & ice cream was served. My brother & sister in law knew I wouldn't want any so they didn't even ask/offer, which was fine. I just felt sad that everyone else was enjoying the treat & I wasn't having any. I have not yet had anything like that & didn't want to try it today in case I reacted badly to it....or even worse, didn't react & then start eating those things regularly.....

It feels great to have the excitement of a new outfit! Be sure to take a picture of yourself in the new outfit.

I have some interesting news from my naturopathic center. I did an adrenal saliva test as my naturopath and I felt that my symptoms could be from a low functioning adrenal gland. My endo said no he did not think there was anything wrong. Boo Hiss The test results came back that my cortisol levels are flat lined! My adrenal gland is not functioning at 100% hence the problems from my insulin resistance (and metabolism, obesity, and diabetes). So I am now starting on supplements one morning and one evening to try to get my cortisol levels to be more normal and to fluctuate properly. I am already seeing some improvement.
As to my massive cleaning job to get my apartment ready for fumigation. This old broad stayed up cleaning for 28 hours straight (plus 16 hours the day before that). Now every muscle in my body aches and the muscle spasms in my leg are back full force. My Fly Fling Event (yes I am also a flybaby) resulted in 40 bags of garbage, 40 bags of recycel, 4 bags of shredded paper. Unfortunately I now have to unpack everything for the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom and return the cupboards, drawers, and closets back into working rooms. It will take a lot longer to get things put away than it did to pack them.
I just want to go home and sleep!

Have gained one pound in two weeks. Need to go to the gym but am so busy packing household, looking at houses, etc. My eating if anything is under target. It is hard to get in enough protein unless I resort to protein shakes.

Yesterday I made good food choices and was careful with portions emoticon

I was REALLY TIRED, so I 'allowed' myself to nap most of the afternoon and went to bed early.

Scale is down a bit emoticon and I feel pretty energized and alert. Good thing cuz I've been doing a lot of mind intensive creative stuff at work this week.

I'm STILL planning on getting in that walk today!

Happy Friday!

Yesterday was about 50F here and the snow was melting like crazy. Problem is that there is 5 or 6 feet of snow on the roof of the school I work in.....the melting was so fast that the water couldn't run off the roof....instead it came into the classrooms! I have lost 6 ceiling tiles so far-probably more by the end of the week.

Yeah spring!!!!

Work, work, work. It has been busy as usual on my floor at work (hospital).

We finally got our car washed this morning. A free coupon for an automated car wash. Then we cleaned the inside. Just in time-more snow tomorrow-supposed to get around 3-6 inches in this storm here. Just can't win. Oh, well at least we got the old crap off just in time to make room for the new crap coming.

At my 3 month post op check last week the exercise physiologist did her measurements & with the electrodes thingy measures my lean muscle mass. It was the same as at my 6 week checkup!! this is great because it means that I only lost fat these past 6 weeks. It also shows me just how important the strength training is & why i HAVE to 'Just Do It'

The back feels pretty good. Some pain is still there but only two minor muscle spasms today. So that is good. but for other issues we adjusted my insulin today as my a1c was the worst it has been since I was diagnosed. We think it has to do with the medications for my back. I also had an x-ray for the bruise on my hip that has been there for quite a few months. I had an abdominal CT scan to check my gall bladder and spline along with another 2 rounds of blood drawn that make 3 blood draws in two days (one blood draw was for the contrast they used in the CT scan.

Spinal cortisone injections are excruciating painful. The pain is from the lidocaine shots to numb the nerves.and not so much from the actual injection which is a very deep pain or pressure.

Smilingeyes, thanks for the sparkgoodie!!!!

I just had a spinal cortisone injection in lumbar discs due to herniations which were causing leg spams. I was also fitted with a knee brace to help with the knee that collapses from nerve damage from many years ago. I was so lucky that I had the fitting just before the injection as that enabled me to walk somewhat. I looked like a drunk clown at a circus. the back doctor and technician had to hold me up to get me to the recovery chair and the technician had to help me get dressed and get the brace on my knee.
Anaesthic has worn off and I start back on my meds tonight. If this works I may be able to start getting back on the computer. Sitting has been causing some painful leg spasms lately. So I have stayed off the computer. Accupuncture and Cranial Sacral massage helps the pain but meds were not helping to fix the discs. I hope the injection helps.

Time to go to bed. Good night everyone. I have read most of the posts but did not post much.

We are in Newark Delaware for a week for the national division 1 hockey tournament. My son helps with one of the teams. I was up at 4 this morning to finish laundry for packing. So exhausted fell asleep for five hours upon arrival. Issues with my son's dialysis lines but have this resolved so he is running fine. Hope to get a spa day in. Brought soup to heat in microwave for supper.

I am lucky working in the hospital in which I had my surgery on 12/17/2012. I work on the Cardiac floor and they tell me that I am their poster child for weight loss. the doctors and my Team mates continue to congratulate me on the weight loss from the surgery.

I do have the Nurses keep reminding me to sip my fluids as I get so busy that I forget to sip.
Got to keep sip, sip, sipping! Otherwise all is going well.
We have been really busy at work. I work the night shift.
From 3am and on to 7:30am it is run, run, run as we have to do everything within that time period. Doctors want the EKGs and blood draws done by a certain time so they can have the results. So, during that time period we are doing vital signs, EKGs, drawing blood, weights and then lastly-blood glucose tests for the morning on those patients that need them. So, we are hopping during that time period.

Just want to say I am feeling pertty awesome! I have been eating right and working out and getting results!

I had my RNY surgery in 2011 and I was around 250lbs (I am 5'2 so that is allot) I got down to 152lbs and was around that for about a year.. I started to gain weight back last year and regained about 30lbs..

I realized I was falling back into patterns and decided to stop it before gaining even more. In 11 weeks I have lost a little over 18lbs, I am not feeling deprived and even allow myself a treat every now and then! I have about 35lbs left to reach my overall weight goal and to get to my healthy bmi.

I am glad I had my surgery because it helped me get well below 200lbs which had always been a challenge for me. It is still a great tool to help me feel that I have had enough food and if I have had too much to eat.

I wish I could say regain wasn't possible after surgery.. after 3 years the weight does not come off as fast and losing requires normal diet and excersize. I am proud of myself for making better choices!

Hope everyone is doing well.. This is the only place I have support from others who have had weight loss surgery.

I Am worth it!!

I have been tracking my food now for a week and posting my accountability on my blog. I noticed that the weekend IS NOT my friend. Need to do some reevaluation as I go forward. The weather is still not good here. We got about 4" of snow again on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Yesterday morning it was -2 when we came to work and this morning it was 7. PLEASE BRING SPRING!

I have my 3 month post op appointment next week. I am 8 lbs short of where I wanted to be by then, but still seeing progress every week.
This week has been tough for me to get exercise done. Need to figure out how to be more consistent.
Tonight my son has 3 friends over to celebrate his Bday (11 years). I served cake & ice cream & caught myself as I saw my hand reaching to wipe the frosting off & to my mouth. Had not realized before what a habit that has been my whole life!

During February, my rate of loss significantly dropped but still is so much better than before the surgery. I need to increase my activity level on a consistent basis. I have my follow-up with my surgeon at the end of March. Have gone from 2 and 3 X to a size 16

Haven't posted in a while. Lots of things happening.

2-12-13 - broke my foot, 2-19-13 had surgery to put a pin in the bone, no walking for 12 weeks! Was in a boot and used a knee cart to get around. Because of the knee cart my arthritic knee kicked in full mode pain! I couldn't do much of anything. It hurt so bad all the time and was REALLY bad when I tried to ride my recumb bike. :( Went to see the ortho dr and my knee was at a 20 degree angle - normal is 7.
10-23-13 - had total knee replacement, weighed in at 268 (low was 234). Had problems with my blood pressure being too low so they kept me in the hospital an extra day with an IV. Came home dizzy and not able to keep anything down. Lost 10 pounds in two weeks after the surgery.
1-8-14 - dr put me on HP meds. Been running high since surgery - 142/92 average. I feel bloated most of the time but I have maintained the 10 pound loss.
1-31-14 - started at FitZone with a 6-week gift certificate. Haven't been going consistently but have been walking at work and using recumb bike at home.
2-24-14 - started tracking food intake again on SP, blogging daily on SP page the results of the day....holding myself accountable.

When I went to my bariatric surgeon in 10-18-13 I had gained again. She told me that the Bariatric Association had released that people 3+ years out should reduce their calorie intake to 1000-1200. She wants me to stay more to below 1100. No surprise there! I have to go back April 14 for a 6-month check-up to see how the weight loss is going. They were sympathic with all the issues thru the year last year but she wants to check my progress since having my knee replacement done.

With this weather my season disorder has been in full gear this winter - all I want is to cuddle in deep and not do ANYTHING! Full hibernation mode. Doesn't make it easy to keep yourself motivated when you are so BLUE. When I get cold, I get chilled to the bone and it takes FOREVER to warm back up. This morning it was -9 on the way to work.

I truly want to get back on the band wagon and get the weight loss going again. Everyone says that RNY is the lazy man's way out but it's not. It takes will and determination. It takes a want to. If I am to succeed it is up to me! :)

Just wanted to check in from my last post.. Like I said I regained a little (my surgery was in 2011) and I have been working hard to lose what I gained back (about 30lbs). So far in two months I have lost 16 of those pesky pounds! I am really proud of myself that I realized I was going in a wrong direction and I am making the changes needed to get back on track! I needed more emotional support so I rejoined weight watchers which worked for me in the past.. I am working out and eating healthy again and feeling pretty good :) Regain can happen and it was a struggle to get pat the dissapointment I felt in myself.. Hope everyone is doing ok! I will be checking back again soon :)

I Am worth it!!

Thats great news Carol! We had snow forcast for yesterday but it stayed up north in our state! I had lovely heavy rain with no power outage and winds forecast for 25 to 40 did not appear either.

I hope winter will stop so spring can begin.

Had a big day yesterday. Went out with my neighbor for a 60 minute snow shoe adventure. On Thurs/Fri we got another 8-10 inches of snow & blowing so the walk yesterday went from crusted to soft quickly.

Last night my husband & I went to an banquet. This was the 1st time since surgery (in Dec) that we have gone to a place where I had no control over what was being served. I did have a protein bar in my purse in case I did not feel like I could eat the foods. It went really well though. It was buffet & there were 2 protein items-plus salad, veg, potato etc. Beef tips in wine gravy sauce & chicken breast with rosemary. I took a chicken breast & some of the beef tips. Also, during the social hour there were cheese/cracker trays.
I had a small plate of cheese that I carried around until the meal, then I got a chicken & a bit of beef tips. I ate most of what I had taken, and was able to stop eating while there was still food on my plate but listened to my body & stopped when I was satisfied, before I was "full".
I also got all my water in yesterday along with a bit extra.

Emotionally this was a HUGE step for me. I was so worried about the dinner that I wasn't sure I would be able to even attend & kept trying to find excuses not to go. My hubby knew I was worried but also knew that if I didn't go I would continue to find excuses to not attend these events in the future & that I need to learn to live in society again :)

That is why I always encourage everyone to take their measurements at least once a month and to take a photo once a month. The numbers on the scale stop when we are losing inches. so the photo and measurements will show you that you are still changing and getting smaller even when the scale does not show it.

I am 2 1/2 months post op & I am having trouble seeing the weight loss. I know that my clothes are smaller, the scale has smaller numbers, I am losing inches from all over my body. But when I look in the mirror I still see the same person.

So good to see posts from others. I do understand about not realizing you have lost so much as it is a body image we have developed. This week I shopped and got clothes size 16. I had needed 3X before. The clothes I had were baggy and not attractive. I loved trying on things and the size 18 were just too big. It feels good to have clothing that fits. Later this afternoon I plan to be fitted for bras as they are so big on me. I plan to toss or donate all old clothing except one pair of slacks that literally falls off and top to remind myself never again. Need to up my activity level as my rate of loss has slowed. Still doing well.

Well, we got 15 inches of the snow crap all in one day and now it is snowing again!! it would be nice for a break so we could clean the car.

Talking about sizes- I am wearing medium-but, it is starting to get loose on me. Holding on for a bit as I want to wait a bit before buying more.
I am a jeans, gal. Jeans and scrubs-scrubs as I work a lot.

Changeto180,
Congrats on the weight lose and smaller clothing sizes! Keep up the good job you are doing.

Remember that you want to always were clothes that fit and flatter you. It helps to build up a positive self image. Baggie clothes just make you look larger. You do not want clothes that are just ok on you! You want ones that draw possitive comments from others.
Remember that while loosing fast a thrift or consignment store can be your best friend! Now is also a time to add accessories to your wardrobe. Accessories make your wardrobe look bigger than it is by changing the look of the basic outfit! Bonus accessories last through all weight loss phases. So go wild....hats, scarves, wraps, jewelry, shoes, and whatever else you can think of to change the look of a basic outfit.

So many of us before surgery attempted to hide under baggy clothes. The tent look just made our self image worse. After surgery as we lose the weight we also need to develop a new more possitive self image. If you do not own one buy yourself a full length mirror and check how your outfit looks each day.

For clothes I learned to wear flattering styles when I was still obese from a website called www.missussmartypants.com. Now that I am smaller I still use the skills learned to make sure my clothes flatter my new body type. I do dress in a more conservative style for basic pieces and then add some youthful fun with accessories. My accessories run the gamot from classic to on trend. So play around. In the first 2 years I went to the clothing stores every weekend and triend on clothes. I was training myself to see my image more accurately. Now I did not buy clothes every week but I did try on various styles.

Good luck on developing a new style to go with your new much skinnier self.

Yep, no problem with the new food skills. Need to work on more fluids as when I am working I get so busy I forget to sip-I have the Nurses at work to remind me. Getting in my vitamins-no problem there. Labs looking good-but they did up my D3 a little.
Working the buns off.

Another major snow storm coming in-supposed to get here at 9am tomorrow for another 6-11 inches of the white fluffy crap.

Had a pretty good day today. I was able to sell some pants that no longer fit (yeah) and used the money to buy some "new" one. I was able to fit into pants that are 4-5 sizes smaller than where I was 2 months ago.
I also bought a couple of tops, but I do have a lot of tops that are still looking ok on me for now. Just really needed to get pants that had the waist band & inseam in the correct locations at the same time :)

Carol, You are still in the honeymoon phase. Feeling hungry does come back socontinue to work hard onestablishing the new food skills.

I just spent 4 days doing a major Flylady Crisis Clean. With my bad back I have not been cleaning like I should. Landlord was coming for annual inspection so I stayed off the computer and used my handy timer to clean for 15 minutes, take out garbage, read for 15 minutes, shred paper, then repeat. I still have more to do but it was a good start. Now my back is hurting and I have to wait until next week for another accupuncture session.
