Sorry to hear about your nephew. Cancer is not a good thing. But, I think Chemo is worse than the Cancer-Chemo kills off the good cells along with the bad.

Mom was in Hospice before she passed. They enter into the picture when there is nothing left to do for the patient. When it won't be too long before they pass. Mom couldn't be on any tubes, etc either.

Today has been rough. Learned my nephew's cancer is back. The doctor was not in to discuss what treatment he would recommend.

Also saw post of a friend who is the mother of a son with ESRD. The physician wants Hospice to be involved but their rules do not allow for intervenors feeding.

At this time it appears "care" is missing from healthcare.

Yesterday was game day. Fixed fresh basil roasted tomato soup and Italian wedding soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. Several days in a row my sleep was shortened--The alarms kept going off on son's dialysis machine two nights in a row and one night I had to take his lab sample to ER lab to be processed so late getting to bed myself. This morning I was exhausted. Needed to get him to his class. Had two hours before my Bible study so ran by his center to pick up heparin and lab label. Had gel nails filled in--bright red for Valentines' day. Enjoyed my group immensely. Picked up son and had prime rib at Longhorns. Son needed to stop by Verizon. House cleaner just finishing up when got home. I konked out for three hours. He has labs again tonight so if lucky will get 6 hours sleep.

Lots of people commenting on the business of their lives. Don't forget to make yourself a priority. Take a few minutes to just breath, meditate, relax your neck & shoulders, close your eyes and think about something that makes you happy. You are important, and you deserve to take care of yourself!

I feel amazing right now. I started going to the gym to walk on Dec 31st which was 2.5 weeks post op. I have been working myself up and tonight I was finally able to walk 5k! And I did it at a petty decent piece too! Cant wait to see where my fitness is at the end of February :)

Smiling Eyes - You can do it! It seems so easy to have the pounds creep back on...

I have hit my first -50lbs :) I did a comparison photo (on my sparkpage) I'm feeling really good! I'm also exercising consistently and that feels really amazing, and a little surprising

(we don't have the chewables in my country)

I am now wondering if the reason I have to cut my calcium and pre natal vitamins in half is because of the hiatal hernia repair they did at the same time as my RYN... will have to ask about that if I remember when I go back for my checkup in March.

My calcium is in my bariatrics vitamin-which I have to cut down as it is so big. Those of you taking extra calcium-I have found Citracal-calcium citrate with D3 formula-Petites. They are smaller and can be taken with or without food-and they are coated.

Carol6x, I have split my food into five portions over the day, because I was finding myself too full on the protein portion to attempt to eat the veggies or carbs a lot of the time. I have my veggies mixed into my smoothie which works well for my evening snack.

Lizzie93-4 I was told I would have to cut my calcium and prenatal vitamin in half for life, I suspect part of that reason is to ensure it will be absorbed, but also to make swallowing it easier.

I'm on my 5th week and I'm back at school/placement 5 days a week. It's nice as I don't have to obsess about eating and drinking. I just drink water until the class is over and then I drive home and by the time I get home and settled its been 30 minutes and I can have a snack. It's quite convenient!

I'm also experimenting more and more with food. I made some stir-fry veggies with my chicken and they were divine...I only could eat 3 bites of them but still! lol

I have a question too. Ya know how we aren't suppose to mix food and water? How about the water we sip to drink a vitamin to go with the food? My calcium pills are huge and I have to take 2 with a meal or snack...should I be worried? My nurse said its not enough to worry about but sometimes I am taking 2 BIG gulps of water to get them down. Just curious what you have all been told.

Your body needs some carbs. I was on med for Diabetes before my surgery in 2012 and before I left the hospital they took me off of it and I am no longer on any meds. My A1c has been running 5.0. You just watch what you eat-eat your proteins first and then veggies and last-carb (such as mashed or baked potato). for my little potato, my husband had the potatoes and I cut off a small piece of it as I cannot eat a whole one-even if it is a baby potato. Most of the time I do not even get to the carb part as the protein fills me up. Depends on what protein I am having at the time.

Drinking them is ok, but I have to watch my carbs, as I was on medication for Type II Diabetes. Its why I only make a small amount, and use the 10 calorie per cup juice, and fat free yogurt in mine. :) I also try to limit how many I have in a day to one serving, as the natural sugars in fruits can throw off my carbs for the day.

Kate - Its Oasis Peach Mango, they also have a blueberry one that I have used in the smoothie. I am leary about trying a salad yet, but may try adding in tomatoes after my clinic appointment on Thursday. I had a wee bit of corn, and that seemed to digest well, but don't want to rush that too much either. One of the best ways I found to get in protein is to have no fat cottage cheese, its really high in protein. I do use the nutrition tracker and plan each meal out to make sure I am getting in the 60 grams per day and if I come up a bit short, peanut butter and melba toast is my filler. The smoothie not only gives me protein, but its a great way to get in an extra cup of fluids.

Avandrea - your smoothie sounds wonderful!
What kind of peach mango juice are you using? (I want to try your recipe!)
I really need to increase my fruits and veggies.
I'm 12 weeks post surgery, and it still seems like I'm struggling to get in the recommended 60 grams of protein! I'm looking for creative ways to get my fruits and veggies
I only ate salad once, a couple of weeks ago and I felt nauseous afterward.
so far I've been just eating tomatoes and sometimes a little spinach and pretending it's a salad and I feel pretty good. I think I'll try a full salad again soon.

Today I weigh the same as I did a week ago. I think I'm officially at a plateau. I'm trying to focus more on non-scale victories right now. I read an article on Spark today that says the scale only measures "the amount of force that gravity has on your body at a given moment". There are a lot of other measurable victories that we can focus on that are just as important!

Keep up the good work Avandrea!
-Kate

I am in the 6th week of the diet, and so far the only real issues are getting in enough water and eating more than my stomach likes. The water issue is getting better, now that I am able to eat my meal a bit faster and they are not running into each other. I am also gaging a lot better when to stop eating, and have now started to have two snacks between meals so I am not putting as much food into my stomach at one time.

Right now for my second snack I am enjoying a small smoothie, that has 1/2 cup of spinach, 15 blueberries, 1/2 cup fat free yogurt, and 1/2 cup of peach mango juice with only 5 calories. Very yummy and low in calories and fat, as well as giving me the last bit of my protein for the day. This way I am adding in raw veggies, in a form that my body should be able to handle, but I do miss my salads. How soon have you all been able to add salads back in, and how much can you eat at a time?

My weight loss is not as dramatic as a lot of the other people I see on here, but I figure that since I only needed to lose about 60 to 70 pounds, that almost half of that is not bad at the sixth week mark. My weight seems to be stuck on a plateau around 198 to 200 pounds, and I am not sure if that is because the calories, fat, and carbohydrates are always below the level suggested by Sparkpeople or I need to really get out and walk every day. I see the surgical nurse in two days so I will ask her then, what she thinks, and will post here what she says.

I am excited as I can finally see a difference in my appearance! It only took 40lbs lol

But I am MORE excited that I have stuck to my walking and exercise routine. Week 1 I walked 3x, week 2 I walked 3x and swam once. This week I start school so I plan on walking 3x! Right after lunch I am heading to the gym.

Eating is going well. I should be transitioning to normal food but I find since I am the only one eating my food it is taking a long time to try all the soft foods. ie today I am going to try canned peaches and if it goes well I'll have peaches for the next 5 days...

And Ive had no more food issues...chewing it better!

How is everyone else doing?

No I never drink and eat together - I wait the 30 minutes before and after.

I tried a scrambled egg last night and tolerated it well. I still feel a little weird with food...but breakfast was easier to eat today than yesterday.

Hope you all have a great New Years Eve!!

Lizzie, you might want to switch that omelet to poached egg or hard boiled, both mixed with a bit of low fat miracle whip. the omelet might be a bit too dry for you to tolerate well yet. The other thing is are you drinking at the same time as your eating. I was told that was a guarantee for dumping syndrome.

Today is a red letter day for me, for the first time in over 13 years I am back in the one hundreds, 199.4!!!

You ladies are fabulous, im glad I posted.

Ive stuck to my food outline, right now im on soft foods which includes most meats, as long as they are chewed well. When I look back I wonder if I chewed enough...ill try ham again in a few weeks.

Today im back to full fluids just in case. I think its a good idea as my stomach is still getting a little queasy with that! Tomorrow ill try one meal of pureed omelette if I feel up to it...we shall see.

Was grateful that team was so very clear on not introducing solid foods too soon to let the pouch heal. By gradually introducing foods learned those that worked. You quickly learn what does not and to heed early symptoms

As I do my own research, and also read about people's experiences on Sparkpeople, I'm amazed at the differences in our post-op diets. Its incredible to me that there's not a standard diet following WLS. There is a diet for diabetes, for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. that all Dr's pretty much agree on and recommend for patients with those conditions. It doesn't seem like Bariatric Surgeons have ever come together to agree on a standard post-op diet for their patients! Ultimately we all end up in basically the same place, eating the same foods the same way... but our journeys to get there are very different!

The only problem I have had so far with food is eating too fast, because of not paying attention. Part of that issue is that I tend to not feel hungry when I first wake up, and get distracted by facebook or even SparkPeople... lol. Then I realize that I am an hour or two behind on getting my food and water in, and at times I eat fast without realizing it. I get a gentle reminder in the form of stomach cramps and if I stop right away they tend to go away quickly. My first meat choice was peameal bacon, with the fat and peameal cut off making it very lean meat which I baked in the oven, rather than frying it. It was easy to chew and my stomach tolerated it very well. I did not start on meat until the third week post op, and only had two tablespoons for the first few times. The other thing you can try to do is to make sure the meat is not too dry from cooking it.

I do recommend following the diet your team set out for you to the letter, they know what foods you should be able to have and when to try to add them in.

Lizzie, I have two cats, one in each of those two pictures. They are sisters that I saved from going to the shelter, I went in for one cat and ended up with two because they were so cute, and stuck to each other like glue.

It may be too early for ham. It helps to eat slowly. Early warning signals that one should stop are getting quiet ( others have given me that observation of me) and a runny nose. Sometimes I can chew sugar free gum or take the gas X that dissolves under the tongue and that will help if I stop eating. I have never thrown up just coughed up a ton of mucus. You might want to talk to the health team. Again I have foods that are fine most days but cause problems other days. I would think a lean pork tenderloin might be better than ham but that was me in the early days. Like you, I hate getting sick so I was thankful for the reaction as it stopped me from sweets. It may be the ham was sugar cured and that was part of the problem. One thing for sure, we become pros reading labeled and I will ask questions. One good I love and has been fine from early on is ahi tuna seared with sesame seed crust and wasabi and ginger on the side. I can eat around 3 ounces if I have a baked potato side. Yum.

So my pouch rejected it's first food - ham. I got sick twice today and now I'm afraid to eat or drink anything. I hate hate hate throwing up (I get all irrational and cry) and I know I will be grateful for the surgery tomorrow but today I'm stressing because what if I throw up again with other new foods, ya know? emoticon

I had issues with chicken and still do not tolerate dry chicken two years post surgery. The tolerance comes and goes. Initially, I relied on protein drinks and soups. Greek yogurt that is low on sugar was good also. For snacks sugar free pop cycles or fudge bars were great. Staying away from crackers and salty snacks was recommended by our team.

Anyone else experience food aversion issues after RNY? I'm about 10wks post op and for the past couple weeks nothing tastes or smells good to me. Many foods trigger a gag reflex. There are very few foods I can tolerate, and even those I can only stand to eat two or three bites. Flavors seem too strong, I can't stand any meat, or anything the slightest bit sweet. I tolerate salty or sour flavors the best right now. What are your experiences? Did it improve after time? Any foods that you were able to tolerate well?

Avandrea - I'm glad you didn't have a reaction - that would be really frustrating! Hopefully it continues to agree with you. BTW Your cat is beautiful!!!!

Cindy - Hopefully you can find enough time to make yourself a priority during this stressful time. And I'm proud of you for getting the help of a counsellor! They can be so valuable.

Im still struggling with constipation but its a little bit better. Im not willing to try laxatives or anything as Ive seen WLS people forced to rely on them. Just natural stuff right now.

Eating is still great though, Ive been testing out some new produce this week and the pouch is accepting them all. I never thought the crunch of sugar snap peas could be so divine! lol Hope everyone had an enjoyable Holiday and enjoy the New Year!!!!!!!!!!

Touching base. Good that protein issues worked out. The discomfort is an excellent teacher. About once every three months I do something without thinking and quickly adjust. Normally I pace my eating and watch foods closely but occasionally have problems.

Hope to post a log before the new year. Much easier on the computer than here on my phone.

May the new year treat you well.

I still work with my counselor, mom has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Work is still a major stressor. Time is something I need more of. I will try to stop here alittle more in 2016

Seasons greetings from me, Cinnamon and Nutmeg.

Hope everyone had a good holiday today, and was with family or friends. My day was spent alone with my two cats, crocheting and watching tv shows as both my children live in other cities, and my parents and siblings are several hours away as well. I am going to be treated to lunch tomorrow though, by a good friend so all is well.

I finally got brave enough to test out the new protein powder, and had no reaction which is good news. Now I can once again use the whey protein isolate to flesh out my protein over the day if needed.

I did make a mistake today with my food though... was not thinking and ate too fast. I paid for it with some cramping that lasted about half an hour, won't make that mistake again for a long time I am pretty sure. Fortunately I did not compound that mistake with drinking too soon after and am doing ok now.

Weight wise I seem to have hit a plateau, but am not worrying about it, I know that I have lost over 1/4 of the weight I plan to lose in 25 days. This is just my body reacting and saying slow down, this is too fast. I will keep tracking my food intake, making sure I get my 60 grams of protein each day, and get out walking more.

Lizzie I still cannot take pills well-they have to be real small and coated.

Your insides are still healing and you should be taking it easy. You should not be on real solids yet. Maybe foods ike refried beans-soft if your Team's diet allows for it right now. Plenty of fluids-keep hydrated. Get your rest-but also do walking.

Carol6X, thanks for the advice. I do have a really great support team with my physician, nutritionist, and counselor. I hadn't thought about keeping a journal, but at other times when I've been successful in my life with other projects a journal has been a critical piece of my success. I hadn't thought about journaling for this, and I appreciate the suggestion!

Lizzie, for constipation, you can try baby prunes, prune juice to start with. That was recommended to me by my dietitian when I had that issue. Also, lots of water helps keep the stools soft. Metamucil was also recommended.

On the good side for me, eliminated applesauce this morning as the culprit for the allergic reaction. So, will try the new protein powder this afternoon and see how that goes. Hoping it's one of the ingredients in the other protein powder... and not the actual Whey Isolate protein.

Avandrea - that sounds really frustrating, I hope you can figure it out soon!

So I had my surgery last Tuesday :D Everything went well - stayed an extra night as I was pooping blood. Still having some when I have a BM but it's getting better and the Dr will be calling me tomorrow with advice.

Havn't had any bad reactions to food or drinks yet. I feel a little icky when I take some of the pills but I can deal with that.

Anyone know of any natural remedies for constipation?

I'm so excited to lose this weight!

Another allergic reaction this morning while I was having my morning meal. It is looking like the codeine I thought was the culprit is not the cause at all. All I had was cream of wheat, apple sauce and protein powder. I have never had an issue with apple sauce, and I was eating cream of wheat three days after my surgery with no problem. Looking back at my first attack, I had protein powder as well, so am thinking it is something in that. Reading the label there is sulfite in it, and I am wondering if that is the culprit, as I am allergic to penicillin which is a sulpha drug. They are sending me to an allergy clinic for testing, but that won't be until March, so it's up to me to figure this out. I did buy some benadryl, which I used this morning when my lip was swollen and my throat felt tight.
Thinking that I might try the protein powder again tomorrow, to either confirm or rule out it being the cause of the reaction. I have lots of warning that my lip is starting to swell, there is a weird feeling like a tingle before the swelling starts.

Not being able to use the protein powder to supplement my food intake of protein will make it very hard to get enough protein in, as well as increase the cost because I will have to go back to drinking boost or glucerna. I did buy a second kind of protein powder that has no sulfite in it, and hope that I can use that, if not a friend will take it and use it. Sadly they did not have sample packs of it so I had to buy the jar instead. Will let you know what happens tomorrow morning.

Katie-first let me congratulate you on your surgery!
I assume your Team gave you a booklet/Info on the stages of your diet and what you can and cannot eat. They do that for a reason. Your pouch is new. Tastes completely change after surgery-I know mine did as well as everyone in my at my hospital support group. It is normal.
Start a journal, if you haven't already. Starting pictures, measurements, thoughts, etc.. great to look back on for motivation if you need it in the future and also great to see how far you have come. It is like a diary of sorts. Be sure to put in on how you feel, etc. questions, etc.
You should have been following the stages put to you on what you can have and when, etc...
make sure you get plenty of fluids and do not drink anything 30 minutes (at least) before you eat and after you eat-and definitely nothing to drink when you are having your meals. Make sure to eat slowly.
Getting in your fluids is a big thing so you do not become dehydrated. Sip, sip, sip. walk, walk, walk.
Sugar free popsicles and Pedilyte pops help with hydration-pedilyte pops also have electrolytes and they are great to get that crunching feeling.
Your emotions will be up and down-part of the way the body reacts to the surgery. Your body recently went through a big surgery-alot for your body to handle.

We all go through the emotional rollercoaster. Do the journal thing and there are also plenty of Bariatric websites online as well to help you through it as well.
Also, do not forget about your Team, surgeon and his team- they are there. ask questions, etc...

Hi All. I joined the group a little while ago, prior to my surgery date. But, I haven't been very active in the group since I joined. My surgery was Oct 20th, 2015, and I'm reaching a point where I think the support of a group would be helpful. On any diet plan I've ever tried I always hit the wall at about 6 weeks, and the train goes off the tracks and I fail miserably. I'm at about 8 weeks post surgery now, and I'm beginning to feel those familiar and frustrating emotions about food. This time is very different because I physically can't go back to my old way of eating. My tastes have completely changed and I don't even like how most food tastes anymore. But, the emotions are the same. The feelings of wanting to lose myself in comfort food and numb out from the world... I'm not sure what to do with the feelings since I can't eat them. Its a whole new experience to have to face what I'm feeling and deal with my emotions in a healthy way. Thanks everyone for being here on Spark!

Just peeking in, doing well 12 days post op now. Still feeling slight tenderness at times, but also moments now with no pain at all. I have been dropping pounds as well, and am finally seeing my tummy start to shrink, along with my boobs apparently... bras are starting to look baggy but not ready yet to go and buy new ones. Really looking forward to being off the full fluid diet on Wednesday... even with three flavours of Boost drinks, and two different jellos it gets a bit boring after a while. I might even start dreaming of the poached egg I am going to make for breakfast for the first solid food I can have.

Great you are no longer needing the medications. I get the pre mixed pumkin shake. Only out in the holiday season at GNC.

I need to get to a nutrition store and look for some of that pumpkin flavour protein powder... that sounds yummy!

Great news today from my Doctor, I can stop taking my two diabetic medications, as well as my two blood pressure medications, and just monitor closely for now.

Quest has protein shakes out- you can get the individual packs to try out-they have variety boxes. I am trying them out now. GNC and Amazon I have seen it on-got from Amazon.

My favorite protein shake was premier at 30 grams protein. Also like GNC. They have a pumpkin flavor this time of year which is very good.

Never tried the Optifast. Some protein shakes take a bit to get used to and others are just yuck.

You will get times now and then that it will happen and so all the reason to keep a journal-keep a track of what you ate-how you felt, etc- to look back on. Remember to chew slowly do not drink anything 30 minutes before you eat, when you eat or 30 minutes after you eat.

Make sure between the 3 dinner times to drink plenty of fluids.

Hi...I haven't officially introduced myself (tho I did post the other day). I'm Michelle, member of sp for a number of years off and on....and recently had WLS on Nov 5, so I'm 12 days out. I was doing ok until last night....I was advanced to soft food and had scrambled eggs for dinner. I've felt gross since then.....my stomach cramped for a couple of hours and now i feel like everything is stuck in my lower intestinal tract, if ya know what i mean. i had a shake for breakfast and soup for lunch....scared to eat real food again.

I don't know if i ate too much, too fast, didn't chew enough....I just don't want a repeat. Staying away from eggs for awhile. I did have some green beans, broccoli and a sliver of a potato yesterday afternoon and had no problem.

I know the feeling. But have you tried the pedilyte pops? You freeze them and crunch on them. They have the electrolytes that your body really needs right now. Makes you think you are actually eating.-but, it is liquid-just frozen.

Sugar free popsicles, Powerade zero, etc...

It took me a while to find a protein drink that actually tasted decent for me. everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I am thankful of those places that have the sample/1 serving packets of their protein drink-so if you do not like it you are not stuck with a big bucket of the stuff.

Hey. I am 19 days post-op, still on a full liquid diet and going crazy. I can't wait to get on soft foods in a few days. Any suggestions on adding variety during the liquid diet phase? I am so tired of the same old shakes, yogurt, etc.

Been busy at work-hospital busy.

Went out for our little dinner-brought home a doggie bag from both of our dinners-and I had the children's portions.
