I had a sleeve done on March 2013 and I have lost 100lbs. They want me to lose another 60 lbs by March 2015 so I can have an RNY. But though I have not gained any weight back, I have not lost any either. It is just a tool, for sure. I know I just have to keep trying and making sure I do not gain. It is difficult.

Well all is going well. The holidays are fast approaching and the leaves here have turned their reds and yellows-the pretty fall leaves are out. Pumpkin time! Harvest time-a lot of good vegetables and fruits are out.

Busy at work (our hospital)-tis the season and it looks like it started a little earlier than usual.

Patty, I know how you are feeling. I lost my dad when I was almost 2 years out from RNY. The stress of that situation and the situation with my mother since that time has given me much stress and I re-gain about 1/2 what I lost.
At 4 years out, I am now handling the stress better and see a counselor regularly. It really has helped. I am starting the weight loss cycle again and all of you are right the first thing is to get the exercise time up. I am also facing a hip replacement revision surgery hopefully in January, and see the rheumatology specialist next week to discuss the joint and bone problems that seem to give me pain all over my body.

I think Nena is right to focus on staying healthy and take better care of me.

Sorry about your Dad, Patty. I lost my mom a couple of years ago and went into a 'funk' for awhile. A few months back I came back to myself and remembered why I need to stay healthy. So I got back on track and I'm doing great.

I had open RNY bypass surgery over 14 years ago. I was post-op for about five years before I started gaining. I never got that I had to take care of myself physically and nutritionally. After a significant gain, I started a thought process to tame the appetite in my brain. I took baby steps to change and they all worked.

Any weight loss surgery is only a tool. I felt I chose the correct one for me, but it is only a tool. I must feed my body and not that evil, old appetite in my mind. Once I got that figured out the rest is easy.

And always, always, always remember that you can gain the weight back if you eat the wrong foods all the time.

I was a cash patient and I must never forget that, too. emoticon

Eleeney01,
I had the sleeve done in 2008 and I must say, I wish I had chosen the bypass at that time, as the sleeve worked for about 6 months and it all came back within 18 months. Just my own experience here.

I celebrated my 2 year surgiversary on 10/8 emoticon emoticon emoticon

I'm pondering writing a blog, but meanwhile, I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the changes and 'stuff' I've been thru in the past 2 years.... emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

My lowest weight was 184 (I'm 5' 8 1/2") and wore a loose size 10 and actually zipped up a size 8 jeans!!! emoticon

During the stress of my dad's final illness and passing last Nov, I gained and now hover between 189 - 194.

I'm trying to get back into my 'zone' where I write here a bit every day, eat reasonable portions of healthy food and walk every day (I was even jogging a bit!!!!) Binge eating is decreasing and I MOST of the time I'm making good food choices again. Baby steps.....

Hi Sparklers!
I haven't been around for quite some time. I will be two years out December 7. I have come back to try to lose eight pounds I have put on. I am sure it is a change in my choices of food and amount of exercise that brought the eight pounds back. It has all happened since June too. I will be tracking my food and exercise so I can bring that focus back that I had before June.

So I hope to be chatting with you all to get inspiration. it's nice to see some of the same faces.
Hope everyone is enjoying this great fall season.

Good Morning
I'm new to this site. Am in the processes of prepping for the sleeve surgery. Have seen the mental health nurse, taking a 12 week class, if all goes well should be able tohave surgery in December/january. Am pretty excited. Have to lose 20 pounds before they will do it. Glad to have team to talk to about pre and post surgery.

The past 2 days went well food-wise. Slllloooowly getting back into my groove eating/drinking routine.

After not sleeping much for 2 nites in a row last week, now sleeping 6-7 hours per nite. THANK YOU Ambien! :)

Well, I am home from my doctors appointment. Two and a half hours there and two and a half back! I did not have particularly good news. The cardiologist said my heart is compromised because of my weight and the surgeon will not do the RNY. I have to lose 60lbs in the next six months. That is before she will consider surgery. I understand but that does not mean I have to like it. So I am 456 lbs today as my starting point. Away I go!!

Since August, I've been dealing with settling my dad's estate. That stress took my focus off my health emoticon

Now that things are 90% settled (details as well as my emotions) plus the fact my upcoming 2 yr ck in with surgeon is in Oct, I'm getting back on track.

Today's post is my start! Baby steps! emoticon

For those of you with arthritis my naturopath is having me try a supplement called Boswelya Plus 3 capsels am 3 pm. (6 per day). It will help reduce the inflammation and we hope that I will be able to decrease or stop the nsaids I have to take in order to be able to move. 4 months till hip replacement revision (17 yo hip replacement). Yes my back specialist is the dr who told me to have my naturopath prescribe a supplement.
So if you have arthritis you may want to look this supplement up and discuss it with your medical team!
I will let you know next month how much it has helped me. My bottle is the in the mail via amazon right now!

Hope all of you are doing well! Now that temps are starting to come down I will try to get back on exercise bike.

Did well on the 14 days at sea and the 4 days in Seattle. Lots of walking got in. Only gained less than a half pound and lost 4 the next week so probably fluid retention when weighed as we got back. Have had some chips since getting home and gained back about a pound. Curtailing those from the house and joined a gym in our new town. Planning to go in for my annual check up when we go back to Virginia in October.

Before my surgery-I used to eat alot of veggies and now I am drinking them in low sodium V8 juice and V8 fusion light plus other fluids due to I find I still don't have the room to eat enough veggies. I eat my protein first and that pretty much fills my little pouch. I can eat a little veggie.-cooked.

I agree. Low carb veggies can be a great snack as well as used in main and side dishes. With beans you get a protein as a bonus. I limit fruits to one or two servings because they do pack more calories. Vitamins still a must. I do best when I strictly stay with sugar free Popsicles and Fudge bars for my sweet treat. As they suggested, check with your health care team as they are specialists and know your unique needs.

I took a glance at your food tracker and the first thing I noticed was a lack of veggies and fruits. This makes all the difference for me and my success. I used to not like veggies, but once I cut out the junk (and I know you are not eating junk), but for me, once I cut out the junk, veggies had to make a place in my diet. And now I love them.

Best to you and I would talk about an eating program with the doctor.

Well, on Monday I have to call in my weight to the surgeon. I was supposed to lose 30lbs by September 24. :( I lost 12lbs but gained 4 and lost 2......so on. I am not doing very well. I think I need to go back on a liquid diet and get my stomach used to less food. I have been keeping my calories between 1000 and 1300. But I think I need to move up my exercises. I guess I am pretty much overwhelmed and need a fresh start. I really have to get those pounds off for my RNY. I guess I am talking myself into taking care of business! emoticon

I am starting the process of having RNY, probably in January. I am going on a cruise to celebrate my 40th birthday next October and at first I was a bit depressed about no being able to enjoy all of the food they have on ships (it's honestly everywhere all the time!) But then I started thinking of all the things I will be able to do, that I wouldn't without the surgery (because of weight restrictions and the limitations of all of my extra weight) and I am even more excited about my trip!!! I can ride the zipline on the ship (how fun!), I can use the surf simulator! I can use the swimming pools (I could have on my last cruise but was too ashamed). And don't forget the rock climbing wall, carousel, ice skating, and general walking around the ship. Now when I think about it nothing at all depresses me about the loss of the buffet, it is kind of freeing actually! I am ready for this new journey!

Great to be back home. Gained about a half pound from 3 week vacation. Cutting back this week on carbs and fruit--so much fresh fruit available on the cruise but do better with more veggies and less fruit.

Let's see. As always these are questions you should discuss with your medical team. Your dietician knows you and your particular needs.

1) Your body cannot produce protein. But your body can produce energy (carbs/fat) from the protein to meet most of those needs. Since you have a tiny pouch especially in the first year or two you need to focus on getting your protein in. So for your salad (when you are at that stage) eat a little bit of the salad and lots of chicken strips(marinate the meat and cook in moist manner so that you will be able to swallow it). Your dietician can help you with how to plan your food.

2) gulping water gets too much air in pouch! Same thing with using a straw you get too much air in pouch and intestines which can be uncomfortable. How we get in our water. small sips and keep the water bottle with you at all times. Pour a large glass or bottle of water then sip away do not wait 15 minutes for another oz of water. Again your dietician can help you figure out a way to get your water in.

Cindy,

Hope you are able to resolve the issues with your hip. It is hard when you can not get around.

We are now past the halfway mark of our cruise; at Kodiak today. I have enjoyed so seeing the sites of Alaska and learning the geography and history. We are at Kodiak today. Yesterday was poignant for me as we were at Homer--my dh name.

emoticon hi everyone ....

emoticon welcome home Cindy, smiles sorry about the pain in your knee and hip... poor baby, sincerely I feel for you and hope they can resolve the problem soon (((( hugs )))) ... emoticon

emoticon hi Carol, high five on carpet cleaning... wow.... I soooooooooo admire you for real. those rental machines are sooooo heavy to lift into the car ... I chipped my car paint lifting that heavy thing... lol.... again congrats on the carpet cleaning... I am kinda jealous lol :)

QUESTIONS: emoticon

1. Clarification needed please =
emoticon emoticon Why is it important to consume protein first and how does one do that when they get to a stage of consuming foods.
For example: I loveeeeeeeeeeeeee frozen vegetables and chicken strips or a salad with frozen chicken strips that I heat up and place on my salad..... so are they (the people who make the rules) saying that I should chew my chicken first and then take a bite of the salad?
Currently I am still on liquids.... drinking my protein in protein shakes at 30 grams of protein per 8 oz.
** I know that protein helps build muscle and when one loses weight, muscle may be the first thing to go.

2. I sooooooooo miss gulping large amounts of water emoticon emoticon and when I mistakenly DO that, the pain in my lil tummy is very, very painful as it is only a small size now..... so my question is HOW do you all consume your water when you are really, really thirsty or feel the need for a lot of water? I know we are to refrain from drinking from straws to avoid air pockets...... so are we to continue to sip on water of 1 ounce at a time in a 15 min duration? how is that small amount going to quench our immediate thirst level? I am confused.

emoticon will I no longer be allowed to drink large amts of water at a time for the rest of my life ? emoticon

Sorry to be absent for a couple of weeks. I have been in extreme pain with my leg buckling when I walk. I had to use a wheelchair to get to the plane for my trip to Charlotte NC.
The pain limited what I could do. I saw an orthopedic doctor on Thursday to check on my 17 year old hip replacement. We are running tests but it looks like my hip replacement may have failed. I have a special test on this Thursday to check the plastic lining of the hip replacement. That is what the doctor believes failed (rubbed away the plastic). So I will probably not be online much this week as it is difficult to sit at a computer.

Sunshine - congrats on surgery

Alice - write down everything you ate and what caused the stress. It helps later on to know how you are now reacting to food and stress. I am an emotional/stress eater myself and what helped me was to find a good counselor to help me learn new ways to handle stress. I have been seeing my counselor now for 2 years and am handling things much better now!
SmilingEyes - I hope you continue to enjoy the cruise. When you take off from
SeaTac you will fly over my apartment!

emoticon wanna hear something funny emoticon

Tonight as I was watching Television, a show called: Worlds Dummiest Criminals" and they show this woman walking into a dollar store, picks out 11 items and proceeds to walk out the door but didn't realize that an employee had locked the entrance door in anticipation of the closing of the store in a few minutes.... so she could not get out, she gave the basket of items back and they let her leave the store .....

and the narrator says: "The dollar store, when Wal-Mart is just too fancy!"

lmao (laughing my ass off) that was sooooooooooooo funny to me.

Congratulations on your surgery! I found at home that powerade zero and pedialyte frozen pops were good (and still are) for getting in fluids and electrolytes-especially for those first few weeks after surgery. Sip, sip, sip or crunch, crunch, crunch. Frozen pedialyte pops are crunchy great for fluids and the needed electrolytes.

I had a hard day today. I did some major emotional eating today. I ended vomiting most of it up. But I am down to 444 down from 448. I hope tomorrow will be better. It is not fun having opposing difficulties. emoticon

Arrived in Seattle Friday afternoon. At Denver airport had late breakfast. We are at a fun restaurant. I ordered the seasoned cauliflower and stuffed dates as an appetizer for the five of us to share. After dinner our group explored, on foot, the area around our hotel. Went to room early to get legs up and to rest. Lots of plans for today and Sunday we depart on our cruise.

One thing I learned recently as I took on eating a pound of veggies per day....

is that when I do that.... there is noooooooooooooooo waiting to go to the bathroom, you HAVE TO get there quickly.... before accidents happen... seriously. LOL.

I was driving the other day and literally had to make an emergency stop to use the ladies room in a gas station... thank goodness I wasn't on the highway LOL

Well, I was off work the last two days for Grand Jury duty yesterday morning. Back to work today-going in at 7pm for a 12 hour shift.
My last Friday of Grand Jury will be August 15th. Until then I am off every Thursday and Friday for it. Just don't like going downtown.
Going to it is OK-it is the getting home in the late afternoon that is the worst.

Now that it is summer how is everyone doing with drinking water? Have you upped your water intake? I am upping mine as it helps to cool my body down. Wet clothes also help as I do not have an air conditioner.

Carol - Great checkup! Keep it going.

chynna, you need to work with your medical team to determine which vitamins and supplements you need to be taking. I have a naturopath who helps me but the dietician can probably help you too. When did you last have your bloodwork vitamin and nutrient levels checked? If recently then bring the results with you or email them to your provider and discuss what type of vitamins you need. Then go to a supplement store or ask your provider to recommend a brand. vitamins and supplements are different for each of us. You have special needs with a young child to keep up with too. Once you know what you need then you could also do a little online research.

Hi everyone emoticon . I am checking in. I have been so busy since the birth of my son. He is now 7 months old and I am doing great with maintaining my weight since giving birth....Cons....I'm not taking my vitamins, iron or calcium.... and I know this is going to affect me soon. I am trying to pick out a brand so any suggestions would be great.

Also I just want to take the time to say thanks for all the support this team has given me. Happy Fourth everyone!!!!!

Making it happen 1 pound at a time.

Never give up no matter how hard it gets.
