Well, tomorrow night will be back to work again and back to our routine. Being off a week was OK but pretty much messed up our routine. Just too chilly for us to enjoy the outdoors.

I never had any issues about loose skin and before I had my surgery they made us go through the classes and one of the things that you have to do before surgery is to get cleared by a Psychologist. I still have no issues with skin. I have lost over 183 pounds since 2012.
I opted to wait for any skin surgery as I wanted to wait until I was totally down to where I wanted t be at-but, having gotten there-I do not see any issues with it as I am 66 years old -it does not bother me. I do not have an over amount of loose skin to deal with.

Thank you for your input. I totally understand that the health benefits out way the other. However it is more than just skin. I guess I should have explained myself better. I do not have getting back to where I was at a awhile ago again. I have been larger my whole life I can not say I remember myself without a chunky face or my fat roles. It is a love hate relationship. My body has caused me deep pain but also great pride and that I am now a strong fat girl. At times it has been a defense mechanisms to hide behind my real emotions. When I loose this weight I am going to be meeting a totally new person. I will be loosing some of my identity. The skin is going to be a huge change and another worry I have is about the feeling like I have plateau. It is not just a superficial issue, I guess it is finding about the emotional changes on the topic of body image as it is a huge societal issue and looking for understanding how others have dealt with these types of feelings.

You would think, but my doctor tried because I had a terrible time for 2 years but Medicare would not pay. Insurance is not what it used to be. But I am thankful for people who loved me in my family that helped me.

Great post Smilingeyes2, I was not obsessed about the hanging skin. I just had terrible infections on my thighs from breaking out so much when getting hot. I had fallen and broken my right arm prior to my weight loss and arthritis had set up in my arm and after losing the weight, I had a very difficult time even lifting my arms up to do my hair because the extra weight from the skin. The large amount if skin around my waist and abdomen made it difficult to wear pants and jeans because when I would fasten my pants and sit for a while in the car etc. that bulge would cause me not to be able to breathe good unless I leaned backwards. So, having the loose skin resolved all those issues for me.

You are blessed to have had the excess skin removed.

I have learned that most people are consumed with how they look and not others. Even at my highest weight I would swim if I wished. The skin does not stop me now. I attended a conference where the mother and daughter had been in a horrible car wreck. They reframed the issue and rather than scars they choose to see the beauty marks as it was a miracle they survived.

I agree, there are so many more positive things than negative things! I really had no other option, it was have the surgery and lose the weight or die! Having the surgery and losing the 140 pounds saved my life at 61 years of age. I wish I had the surgery sooner. My life has so dramatically changed now that I am thin. I do not have to have an oxygen tank to breath anymore. I do not have to take blood pressure medication or heart medications. I no longer have SVT's or heart arrhythmias! I do still have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis but I can move around so much better. Because if my age, I did have an excess amount of skin hanging on my upper arms, thighs and abdomen. Two years after I had maintained my 140 pound weight loss, I was able to have the plastic surgeries to remove the skin from these three area because I received a gift from my parents in their will. They completely surprised me. Mama passed away one year after I had lost my weight and Daddy passed away the next year. They included a special note in their will that they were so proud of me for losing all the weight and wanted me to have the plastic surgeries to remove the excess skin so I could be more comfortable and also be able to really see that I really had a thin body again. I cried about a week after I received the news. My sister said, you cannot use the money for anything else except what Mama and Daddy wanted for you and my hubby agreed. I would never have been able to have the skin removed if it had not been for my precious patent!s gift. The surgeries were done 3 months a part and it was a painful time, especially the thighs, but I had an awesome plastic surgeon. She had reconstructed my breasts a year before when I had the double masectomies so, I knew how great her work was. All my surgeries were successes and my scars are fading so much. It was nice wear sleeveless tops for the first time in years last summer. I even bought a bathing suit last summer to start water aroebic classes. I just recently went through my walk in closet trying on all my clothes to see which items I needed to get rid of because it did not fit anymore. I had to get rid of all my size 10's because they fall off me. I cut all gluten, sugar and gluten grains from my diet last year because of digestive problems and celiac disease diagnosis and I dropped 16 pounds which took me into size 8's and 6's which is the size I was in in my 30's. So, I am so thankful that I had the RNY surgery 4 years ago!

The downside is by far so insignificant to the upside. Wish I had done this much earlier. Carrying around the excess weight has its toll on one's health. Because of the skin that makes bats wings I prefer to wear three quarter or full sleeves.

Keep us posted.

hello, I am just starting this process. I have attended a informational meeting and first appointment with surgeon, Tomorrow morning I have my first appointment with the nutritionist. I am supposed to loose 20 pounds before surgery. I started this because I am feeling fed up with my weight and I feel that at this point this is really my only option. I have lost significant weight in the pass but my emotions have gotten the better of me. I am a little to scared to be truthful not with the surgery, but more about how I am going to be post surgery. The skin is what really bothers me. What is it like and how do you prepare yourself for the changes in your body. do others feel this way?

Hi Smilingyes2'. Thank you do very much for your supportive comments! I have received so much help and support from others on my journey! It looks like you have done an amazing job yourself! I met my original weight loss goal set by my surgeon over 4 years ago and maintained that weight until last year when I changed over to a cleaner whole food eating plan and I lost another 10 pounds. Now I have eliminated gluten, grains, dairy, except for traditional Greek yogurt occasionally, and sugar foods, except a meal once a week when I allow myself to eat anything I like. My final weight goal is 135 because this weight I'd considered ideal for my heighth and body structure. I want to be on the low side of my ideal instead of the high side so I can keep my BMI lower! I take a lot of high quality supplements due to the malabsorption problems and these help me feel better too! I look forward to reading more of your posts! I pray you continue to have great success on your journey!

Hi Everyone! I just had my 4th year annual Gastric Bypass Surgery checkup. I have continued to maintain my 140 pound weight loss and I am very, very happy about this! My journey has not been an easy one due to a few complications, and having gone through breast cancer for the second time three months after the gastric bypass surgery which resulted in a double mastectomy, a year of reconstruction, back surgery and a total knee replacement this past April! I am doing pretty well now except for the return of sleep apnea that I had before the 140 pounds weight loss. I started having major problems about 6 months ago with waking up every hour during the night which resulted in major fatigue. I was sent back to the sleep center for a study 2 weeks ago and was diagnosed with moderate to severe combined obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. I started with a CPAP machine 2 nights ago but I am still having 20 apnea episodes her hour and still waking up. My doctor said it just takes time for the machine to help. I have radically changed my eating a year ago by going to a paleo diet, gluten free, grain free, dairy free and sugar free. This way of eating has really improved my life and the way I feel. I do not have any food cravings and I do not have to count calories or carbs as long as I eat the paleo foods. I continue to take all my vitamins and supplements twice a day. I do still have low Vitamin D and B12 so I have to take injections once a month to help. I also have low ferritin level of 10 but I take my iron. The doctor is still working on it for me. Since I have continued to follow a strict eating and drinking routine for the past 4 years, I still have a very small pouch and still consume no more than a cup of food at one time. I know eactaly when I have eaten my last bite no matter how much food is left on my plate. If I eat any more, I get very sick. So, I listen to my bidy and stop eating. I am still not able to eat anything with sugar in it because it causes me to get extremely sick. I use organic pure stevia in my herb tea or protein smoothies. I just turned 65 in May and I love being thin and active. I have gone from a size 24 to 6-8 which my hubby and I are thrilled about! I love going shopping at upscale consignment shops! The decision to have the RNY was the best decision that I could have made to save my life, even with some of the side effects I am dealing with, such as the malabsorption issues. Since losing the weight, I came off oxygen, heart medication, high blood pressure medications and pain medications. I continue to see my oncologist every 6 months but I am still cancer free, praise the Lord! I am truly blessed! I want to encourage all those who have already had their weight loss surgery and those who are waiting for your surgery to do everything your surgeons tell you to do and follow your eating and drinking plan by keeping a daily journal and keep moving your body daily. Choose the very best, clean and healthy food that you can to put into your temple. Stay away from prepackaged foods that will derail your weight loss and health. Get on the Internet and research about clean, healthy whole food plans. You are worth it! God bless you all on your journey to health, wellness and a thin, lean body! Your best days are ahead!

Lost quite a bit in the first weeks after surgery and my hair as well. I was assured by my surgeon that it was a stress thing with your body and normal. He was not the one losing it, though.
Had my surgery 12/17/2012 lost 183 pounds-regained 20 since then and am working on that.

Krio - Good for you for catching it now! What is your plan to get back on track?

I am happy to say that I have completed the learn to run emoticon I ended up signing up for the 5k clinic which started yesterday. I know I can do it but the group is smaller and I am much slower than everyone else. It doesn't bother me now but I know it might in a few weeks - I will work hard to fight the urge to run faster than I should and just be okay with being last. I can do this. I can do anything.

I had to lock my scale in the trunk of my car. lol I was becoming obsessed with daily weigh ins and if the number showed a fluctuation that was up it would MESS with my head and I wouldn't eat as healthy. It's kind of nice not weighing in everyday...I am much more relaxed

After a 5 year hiatus, I'm back. My surgery date was 1/21/2011. It was great for the first 5 years, but then life got in the way, as it sometimes does, and I'm seeing and feeling the weight come back on. Need it to stop before depression sets in and I go into a tailspin.

Goal 1: Get under 230- Completed 8/19/09
Goal2: Get into a size 18- Completed 9/24/09
Goal3: Weigh under 200
goal 4: wear 1 letter clothes (L instead of XXL)
Goal 5: change BMI from Obese to Overweight
Goal 6: Run a mile

I am responsible of my own destiny.
I am worth being loved unconditionally.
I am beautiful.

I had lost 40 pounds the year before my surgery. I was thrown for a loop when I went into WW post surgery and I had gained about seven pounds. Called the nurse coordinator and was informed that this was as a result of iv meds in hospital and reassured it would come in off. Did lose that and more by next week. I faithfully walked a couple of times a day in the mall or box stores. I had surgery in December so could not do outdoors. The first few months the weight steadily came off at about three pounds average.

Sandra congrats on have your surgery! It must feel great to be home and comfortable. I don't remember what I lost the first month but it wasn't much. The first month is very slow and that is very normal - you did just rearrange some major organs :)

I am doing well ladies. I did a SP virtual 5k and it took me 52 minutes which includes 32 minutes of running. One day I shall run it ALL!!!!

I'm 7 months out and my body is losing very slowly now. About a pound a week. It's hard to not lose more but I just keep eating healthy and exercising and I have faith that that will be enough.

Hi all,

Just joined the group. i had bypass surgery last week and am still eating pureed foods. I've lost 20 pounds during surgery prep and since surgery but I find myself disappointed, instead of celebrating. While I shouldn't compare, I'm curious how much others lost in the first weeks after surgery. Encouragement is always welcome.

Feel a lot better. It has been crazy at work since I got back on Monday night. I am off this weekend for a much deserved rest. I am not a young "Spring chicken" anymore! emoticon

So, yesterday my sister called me up-she lives in Hawaii-she just found out from her doctors that she is allergic to the outdoors there. There seems to be quite a few offenders outside contributing to it. Poor thing-living in Hawaii and being allergic to the great outdoors. That will take some managing.

It has been really busy at work at the hospital. Early Monday morning I went from working on my floor to the ER as i felt so dizzy and not good. They gave me an IV of fluids and electrolytes. I was running a fever and sick to stomach both ends. Gastroenteritis. So, here I am at home sick. Supposed to sip, sip, sip-but when I sip I have to go-fast.

I will be glad when I am better.

Yesterday, we were on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We never could find the ponies that swim the channel but saw a few wild rabbits at the national park and lots of egrets. We ate at a wonderful place. Had a crab cake packed with crab meat--the only breading was to coat it for frying. The salad had fresh tropical fruit and shrimp on the greens. Yummmm. If I were at home, would have taken enough home for another 2-3 meals. Hate to leave good food but do not wish to get sick.

Hey everyone! emoticon I just had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy on June 8th. I realize it's not the bypass, but this team seems active, so I thought I'd join you! I hope that's not a problem.

I just graduated to soft foods on Thursday. I haven't experimented with too many new foods yet. I made some cloud bread tonight and put a spoonful of canned salmon mixed with mayo on a small piece. It sure did beat eating the meat mixture solo!!

emoticon for having me!

I got annoyed at all my hair falling out and so I got annoyed and chopped it all off. First pixie cut and I like it! It feels weird not having hair but I am hoping it will save me time in the morning!

I've also been trying a lot of new recipes too. Tonight I am making baked tofu, hopefully it turns out. Last time I tried to make tofu it didn't go so well lol

Smilingeyes - yes I love that about surgery too! I can cook a meal and have lots of leftover for the next several meals.

I start the running room tonight emoticon Lots of mixed feelings. Fear, worry, nervous but mostly I am excited and planning for where my running might take me. Once I go for 2-3 weeks all my nerves will be gone and I will be able to simply enjoy it. Wish me luck!

One benefit to the surgery is the way one can stretch a meal out. Had enough chicken left over from my lunch out to make a meal for my son and I and even some for the fur baby.

Got to run. Hope all are off to a great week.

So I got to go to Canada's Wonderland yesterday. Couldn't have had more fun if I tried!! Getting the opportunity to go there was one of my top reasons to lose weight! So glad I had the surgery!!!

It has been 13 years since I went, initially because I lived too far, and then because I was too large for rides. At my heaviest I was a 4x and a 28 jean. Today I am a 1x and a 20 jean. I was really anxious about being able to fit in the rides but I fit in them ALL! Some of them were very tight, and a couple of them were quite painful to fit, but the point is I FIT!

I am planning to go again in August with a different set of friends. I am going to be smaller and I am excited to have a little more room in each of the rides!

WLS is only a tool. Where I reached my goal I find myself needing to use other tools I learned for weight loss and healthy eating. Many of us have learned to stuff our feelings. While comfort food is familiar and initially may mask it does not help the underlying issues. I have tried to face more head in with journaling, meditation, etc. when I do this I feel empowered versus a victim of circumstance and this helps more than mindless eating.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing but I apparently have a stomach of steal.

I have recently pushed myself out of my comfort zone in life and I spent a few days using food to feel comforted (loads of junk). I wasn't aware of it - I just thought I was failing at WLS and doomed to gain it all back. Once I realized I was eating because of the familiarity and the way it makes me feel (comforted) I was able to stop. Today has been healthy, and normal and I am so freakn relieved that I CAN stop.

I am a little alarmed at how easily slider foods can go down - and the amount I can eat!

I am trying to remember that this is a learning curve.

Theory tested here before and lesson learned. Does cause dumping whether your pouch has something in it or not.

I've heard that sugary foods on an empty stomach will cause dumping, but a few bites of sugary dessert when you already have food in your pouch can be tolerated. I haven't tested this theory. Better for me to just stay away from the sugar.

Oh, my. Big mistake yesterday. Had a small piece of wedding cake that had a raspberry filling and the icing did not seem to be cloyingly sweet but either it was sweeter than I thought or had high fat content or fat content or both. Belly ache followed by dumping ensued.

Chili-my husband makes the best 3 bean with ground turkey chili. If we are on the road-Wendy's makes a great chili.
Hubby just made a great beef stew-he cuts everything up into real small pieces for us. We mostly do not eat beef except with stew. It is so tender that it has no problem with my pouch.
Great veggies as well with it.

I can't eat any pasta or rice-still hurts tummy-tried each once -a tiny bite and it did not go well. lesson learned.

Interesting on the protein enriched chip - Has anyone tried the protein enriched pasta?

The restaurant is always a challenge for me, too. DH loves to go out to eat, and he does NOT like to share his food. We probably eat out once a week. I order my own entrée and eat about four bites and I'm done. The server comes by repeatedly to ask if my food is okay, and sometimes even the manager. Its awkward and weird. I don't feel like I want to explain my surgery or my eating habits to the restaurant staff. I usually just smile really big and assure them that it's DELICIOUS. Lately, in-between visits from the server I pass portions of my food to DH so it looks like I'm eating. Only, now he's starting to gain weight. Occasionally a restaurant will have a healthy appetizer, like Ahi Tuna, and I'll order that as my meal. The portions are usually a little closer to reality for me. Often, if they have a healthy soup I'll just order that for my meal.

Its been a while since i checked in here, I am still doing ok, although I have had a few days where the craving for chips got to be too much... First time I made the mistake of buying a large bag (they had no small ones at the store I went to) and finished it off in two days. After that I made myself a promise that I would only buy one small bag if I found myself craving chips, and to limit them to once every two weeks or more.

I have found that too many raw vegetables hurts my stomach, so have not been able to eat all the salad that I would like. Have never really been too fond of boiled or steamed veggies so I really need to work on figuring out a way to make them more appealing to me. Smoothies are still my go to to get in spinach, and a serving or two of fruit. I do have fruit with my breakfast most days though.

I have also started to have spaghetti squash, but need to perfect how I cook it. It was so soft the last time that the noodles were too mushy, but still it tasted yummy. I think I left it in the oven too long, so will cut the time in half and see what happens. Sweet potatoes have become a favorite of mine, and I do them in the microwave, then finish them off in the oven. One potato will give me four servings.

I have steered clear of things like pasta and pizza for the most part, but I do include chili as one of my go to foods to get in enough protein and fiber. If i have pizza it is thin crust, and generally I make it at home so I know what is in it.

Eating at a restaurant is an interesting experience these days, I never know how much I will be able to eat before getting the signal to stop or be in severe pain. It definitely is no where near what I used to be able to eat though. Also trying to be very conscious of getting in enough protein, while limiting the carbs and fat when ordering can be a challenge but I am getting better at it.

All in all, its been an interesting four months, but I would not change it, finally seeing myself as a much slimmer and healthier me.

Like a butterfly, I am shedding my cocoon, to emerge a bright new me!

TEMPEST272002 - how did the spaghetti squash work out? I am pre-surgery, but have had it many times in the past on low-carb diets.

I usually baked it, then sauteed it with garlic cloves, onion, and some butter. Sometimes had it with Italian sausage or meatballs - nice pairings.
I tried putting pasta sauce on it and pretending it was pasta, but that preparation just didn't work for me. But it may be good for other people. For me, I have just accepted that I won't do pasta anymore.

I also tried baking then high-heat frying it like hash-browns and having with eggs - I always liked egg yolks mixed in with has browns. It was OK, but again, didn't really come close to the flavor or texture of hash browns, and didn't do much for me. I do miss sopping up egg yolks with bread or hash browns, but can live without it.

As far as the prep and having it around and easy, I would sometimes cook several squash at once and freeze in smaller containers. Since my prep always involved some form of sauteing or frying after baking, that worked well. Always bought it in the produce section - never looked to see if I could find it in the frozen foods sections. Wonder if that is a good option.

Ticker currently shows my goal for total lost 90 days post-surgery.
70 pounds lost pre-surgery.

I'm about to have my pasta-less spaghetti - I use spaghetti squash instead. So yummy with a fraction of the calories. This will be my first time trying it since my surgery.

I don't eat any pasta it is too heavy of a carb. Hubby makes the most delicious stews, soups and 3 bean chili.

It is a journey-a learning one for each of us.

Know how I was taught to clean my plate as a child. I consciously did not pass that onto my child but I hear other family members say this to him and they all have eating problems. When eating out I order without bread or I deconstruct the lasagna taking out the filling and discarding the noodles--even then I may not eat it all. I often take home half or more. Portions in restaurants are ridiculous.

Happy Easter! Yes, it is easy to get lost in your head stuff and slip into mindless eating. Surgery means that I have immediate consequences to shock me out of it. Definitely going to be more cautious in the future!

Had a talk with hubby about appropriate portion sizes. We split the cooking. When hubby serves up my dish, he puts on about twice what I can actually eat. I understand. Even on a little plate, 1/2 cup of food doesn't look like much. The problem is that I have a really hard time stopping eating if there is still food on the plate - even when my body starts giving me full signals. Something I'm going to work on.

In the meantime, I asked hubby to put on less on the plate than he thinks I need and then let me go back for 2nds if I still have more room. Ate dinner with the much smaller portion - 1/4 link of moose sausage & 1/4 cup chili. Went back for 2 Tbsp more of chili. Felt much more comfortable through the process. I'm learning. :O)

Lizzie - So sorry to hear about your grandfather. That's a hard thing to deal with. Even though the workout felt heavy, I think it was still a good thing to do. Shows your effort to take care of yourself even in the midst of grieving.

Strange how easy it is to go back to old eating habits eh? My grandfather died 2 weeks ago and I decided to go to the gym directly after the funeral as a conscious way to not turn to food. (not sure it was a good idea - the workout felt very heavy). But it did work.

I'm doing well, can run 5 minutes on the treadmill now. Since the gym is closed today I am going to try to run outside today...bringing down the goal to 3 minutes and repeating it twice.

When I am eating wrong foods or too much, my nose begins to run. If I ignore the warning sign, I cough up tons of mucous but no food. It has only happened a few times but is awful and am probably overly cautious. I stop eating early. My hardest days are those if I am in a rush and skip breakfast or try to squeeze all my eating into a few meals rather than small bites spaced over the day.

Sorry to hear about your bad food experience. Our tummies will definitely let us know.
Nothing like having the experience of that as it does get you back on track with why we don't eat fast, etc. It is a journey and a learning expereince.

Had my first bad food experience yesterday. Combo of bad news plus pms had me unthinkingly sinking into old habits. I made myself a lovely turkey burger with fixings... and then proceeded to snort it down as quick as possible. Big mistake. So much pain in my gut. I managed to throw a bit back up and had some relief. I won't be doing that again soon!
