DDR2 is light years better than DDR 1.
Maybe DDR 1 was frustrating because I was learning to hit the beat...but DDR is just better organized, more streamlined and better songs. You can get it on Ebay for about 30-40 dollars. including shipping.

It does seem to get better the more games are released on a system--as the developers get more experience with it. (DDR is the best on the PS2 because there are a LOT of games for it...lol.)

glad that you're enjoying it!!

DDR 2 is a whole lot easier and more efficient that DDR 1.
I have used both now and can thoroughly recommend DDR 2 over 1.
When does the next version come out or is it already out there??????????

With the weather getting nicer, I haven't been using my Wii as much, but I love using DDR as part of my workout! I'm not great at it, I'm on the basic level - difficult seems to be just a little too hard for me, but I have a lot of fun trying.
I feel inspired after reading this thread - I'll try it out again on the next rainy day.

I did it for 60 minutes today on beginner. I sweated some but didn't get tired at all. I think I'm going to move up to the next level and see how I can handle the steps. emoticon

Work out mode won't change the difficulty, but it does take practice to get up to the next difficulty. I recently re-attained DDR for my xbox, and as much as I love it, I'm still stuck at basic, but it took me a lot of practice to get from beginner. Just keep practicing and have fun with it!

i bought my wii this past march and i also bought ddr at the same time. i bought it because i had recently played the arcade version at zachary's pizza and loved it. but the wii version is definitely different (and harder). i think i've played it 3 or 4 times since then and always with other people. reading this discussion has been great. i had been thinking about trading in my ddr and 2 dance mats but i wouldn't get enough trade in value to be worth it. now i think i'll try it again and play around with some settings.

I think I'm going to have to start doing my DDR again. I have a version for the Xbox. I always stop playing it after a few days because I always end up getting a massive charlie horse in my leg, but that's probably because I'm not stretching enough afterward.

That's great!

I got DDR for the PlayStation2 a loooong time ago for Christmas, but the pads have been collecting dust for the last several years. After hearing about a Jeopardy contestant losing weight while playing DDR, I decided that I'd try it again.

Oh lordy, the options in there are confusing enough to follow. In the version I have, there's no hand gimmicks, and no dancers unless you turn them on. My husband had to help me get everything "dumbed" down, but for now, I think I'll stick with dancing to my mp3 player.

I've complained about being such a klutz on DDR, that I have to report my success. I started in January. Most of my scores up until April were D D D...
but now I can get A and B on most all basic routines.. I'm opening up more challenges and really enjoy the work out modes. Anyway, just wanted to encourage anyone who was having a bad time with it that it does eventually pay off!

How do you unlock more dance floor options?

"arena" mode.....I'm on the wii DDR and I don't see the Arena mode.......whatis that?

I did find that if I do routines on Expert....I burn a lot more calories, then when I go back to basic I can do them pretty well....or at least get an A or B....here and there.

I got DDR (Hottest Party 2) for the Wii in yesterday's mail. I'll do it tomorrow as that's my next cardio day. I've been doing Step Mania for a while, & although I do it on beginner stage, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to do the Wii DDR okay. I'm anxious to see the differences between the 2 games.

I read a tips webpage, and they said there was three things you had to do for DDR: practice, practice, practice. Hopefully, if you have been working at it, you are getting better. I know I really stank at it when I first tried it on Beginner -- now I can do most Difficult well and Expert passably... at least enough that I'm not disgusted with myself. I've been working at it since November. I do have jumps and gimmicks turned off, although I kept the freeze for difficulty. I also turned off the hand markers, but if you still keep the remote and nunchuck in your hands you get calories burned in workout mode... I just make hand motions when I think it won't screw up my steps. Sometimes, it just comes naturally, rather than according to a script.

You can pretty much customize it for your skill level. To me, it gets easier on some songs to do the higher difficulty -- more steps seems to flow together better, if you can understand that. After you practice for a while, you get days where you are "in the zone" and you just react rather than just think about what steps you need to do.

Other than the addition of hand motions, I don't know that the Wii version is more difficult than the PS version... but then I don't have a PS to compare. The hand motions are definitely aggravating to me, no matter how accurate I am to the beat. I leave them on occasionally, but I'd rather not have to worry about that detail. :)

I hope that you don't give up on it. You seem to be making progress, and the next AA is right around the corner!!

Anyway,it backfired( no pun intended hehe) I think I will try it again today & see how it goes. It is a lot of fun!!

Amen, Sherezada. let me tell you all how bad I am at this DDR. Yesterady, I turned my dance mat one quarter turn and played it like that was the way it was supposed to be, (still facing the screen like it was turned up right).....I GOT A BETTER SCORE THAN WHEN I PLAYED IT THE RIGHT WAY!!!!!-------sooooooooo........I'm starting to really wonder if even hoping for a better letter grade is ever going to be feasible for me. BUT------ I won't give up. Thanks for everyone's support and suggestions........I'M burning calories and that's what really counts.

Just go to Options, then Game, then Voice and change it to Off.

I highly recommend also changing GAME OVER to End of the Song. It really annoys me when I'm trying my best to catch up with the hardest part, and the song abruptly cuts because I "Failed".

Okay, since I finished the Groove Arena mode in Basic, I decided to challenge myself. My goal now is to play ONE song in difficult as many times as I have to until I get at least a B. Once I reach that goal, I move to a different song and do the same.

Yesterday was the first time I tried my new approach and man, it was a challenge!

I almost got frustrated, after hearing the song so many times, but seeing myself go up slowly from letter to letter kept me going. It also helped that I turned off the annoying voice, and changed the "Game Over" to the end of the song. Sometimes I just sat and watched the arrows so I could figure out in my head how I was supposed to do it before I actually tried again.

I did feel very accomplished at the end of the night when I saw that A, after all the work I put into it :-) Tonight I'm off to another song.

This whole time I've been playing it in the arena mode, I finished it the other day so I tried the workout mode - and wow! It was much harder! I think I'm going to have to try taking the workout step off like some of you guys suggested.
I also put it on expert for fun just to see what it was like...I don't see how it's humanly possible! lol

I'm using DDR 1.......some of what is being discussed does not translate on my newer version, but for the most part, I really appreciate everyone's insights to this. I found that even if I do advanced or expert, while I don't get great grades (D, and E).....I do get a lot more calories burned on the more advanced routines, therefore I burn more calories in 30 minutes, than when I do beginner or basic....make sense??????

My hubby got me the DDR2 for Valentine's. I was so excited, I played it almost non-stop for 3 days...and finished the Groove Arena section (I got to the credits)...LOL! I did it in Basic, and even got a few AAs at the end.

Let me share a trick for the hands: if you just follow the beat with your hands throughout the whole song, you can just ignore the hand "arrows", because you'll automatically get them right whenever they come. Plus, you get bonus points for following the rythm with your hands the whole time!

I HAVE NEVER GOT AN "A" ON ANYTHING!!!!!!!!! But........to work off more calories you need to have the hand signals going. I have turned off the gimmicks, etc., and still I mostly get E and D.......I've been on it since Christmas.........I'm not giving up.......but it sure could have been made more "encouraging" or motivational......frankly --it is down-right rude and insulting......(duh.....guess that's me!!!!)..

Thisisit,
I've been wondering the same thing about those dancers. Thank you for asking about that.

I'm going to try that advice to ignore the arrow scoring. I get really mesmerized by it and then miss the next step!

I'm going to try that, the instructor says to feel the beat rather than be disturbed by what the arrow says........but that seems hard to do.
What you are saying has to be true, but why couldn't they have made the game more true to form. Another thing....the stupid dancers, do nothing that has to do with the routine they give you to do..........or am I missing something here. why even have those dancers on the screen, if what they are doing is not what the person is doing..........your thoughts?

Another thing I find helps alot is to use your ears instead of your eyes.
I find it better to not concentrate on hitting the arrow when I see it at the top but instead concentrate on following the beat.

My 16 year old niece (who is an Irish Dancer) was with me the first few times I tried DDR and she helped a lot, now I've been having a DDR workout date with a friend who has very little rhythm on her own. If you've got the hand signals, gimmicks, jumps disabled. My advice: #1: generally use your right foot for up and right and your left foot for back and left. There are certain songs that you will have to change up for, but it will give you a good start #2: always keep the beat even if you don't have any steps. As I've gotten better and gotten the choreography down I use hand weights to intensify the workout.

This forum has been a better help than asking others who already have mastered DDR (my niece for instance). Turning on the workout step helped a lot, and i worked off 300 calories today in about 30 minutes. I like DDR again. Although I still don't get great grades (D and E mostly)...I feel I'm doing a better job of the dancing.
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for all the replies! This helps a lot!! I'm going to do DDR tomorrow morning as today was a strength training day for me. I will definitely turn off the gimmicks, those are a pain. I don't know about the narrator yet, because when I'm doing well, he isn't bad to listen to. He's almost a motivator.

I don't understand why there isn't a better tutorial on the game! Oh well, it's a good workout. My HRM goes to about 150-160 when I do DDR, even when I mess up.

I turn off all the gimmicks and hand motions, it's SO much easier that way while still giving some good cardio
...and I find it much more fun to do my own hand motions :)

I'm leaving mine on Beginner for now--every time I turn on Basic I get bad grades, and the Beginner is challenging enough for the moment! I turned the narrator off, too.

You actually inspired me to dig out my mat this evening and spend 30 minutes doing some DDR...I haven't played in a few weeks so I was a bit rusty!

Good luck tomorrow! Let us know how you make out...

It took me many tries to figure it out...

You said you are in workout mode, but have you turned jumps and hand moves off as well? And also make sure workout step is ON (this eliminates the 1/2 notes that I will never be able to figure out!). I also turn gimmicks off - no need to make it any harder than it has to be!

Once I got the timing and foot motions down, it all sort of clicked, but it did take a while. I always manage to get a good workout though...and I find the worse I do on a song the more calories I end up burning!

Good luck!

Hang in there. It sounds like you've progressed faster than I did. I have only got a B on one routine. I play it maybe 3-5 hours per week. I've had it since last month. It is very, very difficult to me. I'm 53 though. That may be the problem? I just don't know. All I can say is: I don't understand why they made it so hard. It is discouraging --to me.

I just got DDR yesterday and got to the point where I can pass the training level as a beginner with a "C," sometimes a "B." However, once I switch from beginner to basic, in Workout mode, I can't keep up at all! It's so confusing! The narrator keeps nagging me to concentrate and feel the rhythm. I have good rhythm though!

How long did it take you to master this game?
