Hi all! I haven't checked in here for awhile. Hope everyone's doing OK.

I just wanted to share. I have begun to write a book. I shared some information about it here www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=0x1904x5970R>6346
, if anyone wants to hear more about my book. About how and why I'm writing it. About what it's about. There will be lots about my MS in it.

I just saw this old post. I put a an under each leg of my craft table to make it taller and then made a skirt for it to hide the cans. It also hid stuff I stored under it. I used paint cans because that's what I had available. 😊👍

Hi OLDMOM sorry I missed your message I have been broken down and just now got back on the computer. I had to sell my house and didn't make enough so had to move to Portland and live with my daughter. I love to be able to see my grandson all the time but I miss my home and Central Oregon. It rains so much here I hate the rain and I am in this tiny little bedroom . I had to sell most of my life away it seems never thought that would happen to me at only 66 but it did. I never really know what to do here so sometimes I just go to my room and hide. Sounds like I am feeling sorry for myself yea guess so.

Are you still working or are you totally retired? Portland is a very nice city as big cities go. I hope things are less worry some for you.

My laptop does not let me type some letters and the enter key. Very hard to send back responses. I am at my desktop right now.

I had to send back the Bioness thing for my leg. It seemed to make my leg more spastic and I now have trouble bending it when I walk. Sigh!

Just got off a cleanse and that worked very well. I just need to eat right from now on. Hang in there and I will try to post more often.

Hi everyone so sorry I have been off so long my world as I know it has turned up side down and over again. I sold my house so fast I thought the spin would never stop. I had to fight with the other Realtor she was a witch and caused so many problems that I thought I would fall apart actually I did more than once if it had not been for my sister I would have never made it through. The had to be out of the house so fast could not afford a apartment or anything so I am now in Portland Oregon I am living with my daughter and her. They are going to build a one room in the back of there place they have a very long back yard. I am paying for it but in the end this has taken all the pressure off of me that I have been living under for so long. Trouble is it has taken its tool on me and I have been sick and know something is building in me. But I sure hope to see some of you back I do miss everyone I really do.

My insurance I going to pay for 80%. They will only do it on a 13 month rental, which brings the cost up a couple thousand in total. If paid all at once it would be $6300, but with rental it will total $8775. I would save $495 if we paid. I do understand their point of view and I am not. I get it set up on the 20th. I will let you know what happens.

Dear OLDMOMTO5, I will pray that you are able to get the foot drop system and that it works so you can be more mobile. Don't beat yourself over the weight gain. I just came off my third steroid taper since January and had gained some of what I had worked so hard to lose back as well. We'll get there as long as we don't give up! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I am having problems with my weight, as usual. Winter has knocked me for a loop. I am back up to 221.5 and sick of myself

I went for another MRI yesterday. Need to find out if my lower back is causing some of my walking problems. I also have been approved to get the Bioness food drop system. I hope it works. Insurance will pay for 80% but only on a rental basis. If it works, I might be able to do a bit more walking and get my butt moving more. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hope everyone is staying warm and safe.

Glad the Tecfidera is working for you. I am totally paranoid of any drugs. I do take 2 but it took me a year to get it through my head that they would not send me into an allergic coma. I have had way too many reactions to drugs.
I have been busy, busy, busy....ALmost ready for Christmas.

OLDMOM so good to hear from you. I am so sorry you are having trouble with your balance. The wheel chair sounds the best thing for the outside for you right now. You are a very strong and determined woman you just keep up the fight.

I am on Tecfidera now have been for about 6 months love love it. No side effects like the copaxone and no needles is great. They call every few months and ask questions to make sure all is well.

Thanks FAITH I am now trying to go a little slower so I will be strong for the trip. You and OLDMOM take care. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

It was nice to see a post in my email.

I have been very busy, and for some reason, I am not taking naps. Hmmmm..... That is a good thing though.

Back in August, I missed a step and fell outside. Broke the base of the bone, but did not displace it. Phew! I now take the steps slower and 6hang on to the railing instead of relying on my canes. A couple months later, I fell again, this time inside the house. Dr was surprised I did not break a hip. I landed hard on my left hip. Walking has gone straight to h e double hockey sticks. Since then, I have been using my wheel chair when ever I am out and about. At home, I have been using my walker more often.

I am sewing pj's for the grandkids, the hard part is cutting the patterns out. My table needs to be about 4 - 6 inches higher. It would save my back if I had that but not sure if they make sewing tables that tall.

I do not if any of you have seen the plank challenge on facebook. I decided to try it and I was able to do 100 seconds. I just keep plugging away.

Enjoy your holiday with your daughter and grandbaby!

And, take care of yourself. It's good that you can help your sister, but, if you wear yourself down too much, you won't be able to be of any assistance to her, and, someone might have to help you!

Here's a prayer that we'll both feel better soon!

Good idea, MARNA, to talk to them to be sure. When you are this close, you don't want to do anything to mess things up.

I hope your time goes by quickly, MARNA. Are you close to 66?

I'm grateful that I receive SSDI, and my husband is still working. My SSDI is enough to replace the part time income that I used to be earning, so our income has not declined.

However, about 10 years ago, we had to refinance our home, due to high medical bills that our insurance didn't cover. So, we're still working on paying that off. Should be paid off before retirement, though.

Hi Faith,

No still on can work for 9 months then can work with only 25 hours for 3 months then turn 66 they will retire me with what I am getting now for ever then they don't care how much I make ever again. But you have 9 months that you can work any amount if your gross goes over I think it is 940.00 then that is when the 9 months start and that is 1040.00 as your bace any time you go under then it does not count on the 9 months part. If I went more than the 9 months a SSDI check I would not get that month. I am trying to get my hours cut back is to hard on me.

I am Faith a Care giver. I have one lady that is paralyzed and one has Parkinson's and one needs some help and needs to go shopping and to the library. Another in wheel chair. who needs help. But they have all ready cut back 8 hours and hope for 4 more then wont be so bad.

What kind of job are you doing, MARNA?

Were you previously receiving SSDI, and has that been discontinued?

I just don't think that I'd be able to manage a 37 hour a week job, and, even half of that would not be good for my health and my stress level.

Good afternoon to all -

Marna - 37 is considered full time. I take it you found a job. Good for you. What are you doing for employment? I cannot stay awake.

Faith - glad things are going well with you.

The basement is 99.9% complete. We still need to bring items over from storage, paint the stair well, paint the stairs and clean a window. Have been sidetracked to clean out the room DD moved out of. She now sleeps in the new basement. I want to get it painted and set up for crafting. Remodeling is like a full time job and I am just now getting back to normal. Not sleeping near as much. Ordered the fence posts to go with the fence we purchased from the Church Romeo works for. I wonder if we will be completely done by the end of summer. Not getting a new kitchen but am getting much. A third bedroom, a second bathroom and much needed storage that is organized. I also got a new air conditioner and watering system for the yard. Need to work more things but taking a rest and need to raise some more money.

MARNA --

I'd love it if you'd give us another try at Doing It With Multiple Sclerosis. I'm so sorry that your previous post got no responses; I think you posted on a thread that is not used very much. Try posting here instead: www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes

I like having more than one place to post about my MS, and, it's nice that that thread is more active. I'll still always like my MS AND WEIGHT people, though too!

OLDMOM -- How is that basement coming along! :-) And, how is summer over there? It started off a slow and cool spring here, but, that's over! -- It was 108F yesterday! Thank goodness for A/C!

I already got sick. It was the weirdest thing, I painted all day on Monday. Felt weird but did not know what was going on. I just felt like crying. The next day I was hurting and just thought I used muscles I hadn't used in a while. Then the skin started to hurt. Hmmmm...I might be running a fever, but I get that feeling when i push the muscles also. When I was out to get Gabriella, my walking was horrible. Driving was hard because it is my right leg that shuts down when I am sick. Got home, put my pj's on grabbed a blanket and tried to stay warm. Took my temp and low and behold, 101. Yup, I was sick. Went to bed early and tossed and turned all night. Woke up with no fever but slept most of the morning and early afternoon away. Woke up at 2 and Felt better. By time I went to bed that night, I was walking like usual. Yesterday, I was fine. Painted all day and I am tired today but still not sick. The weird thing was, I only had a temp. no other symptom, no runny nose, sore throat or anything. Now the day after, I had a head ache but I hydrated and that disappeared. I am a walking conundrum. LOL!

HOpe you land a job quickly.

Marna - Glad you are feeling a bit better.

We are still working on the basement. Framing, new stairs, plumbing and electrical work, sheet rocking, mudding, texturing, and finally painting. Linoleum is down in the bathroom, Phone call in in to the plumber to finish his part off and the electrician for him to finish off. Putting trim work around windows, doors and assembling the cabinets I bought. Phew, I am pooped.

I came down with a fever 2 days ago. I think it was from overdoing. Much better now and am back to pushing. I want it done.

Sounds like everyone is doing well on their weight. Add 100 and that is me. I should weight 160...sight.

Have not gone to exercise this week. The basement renovation is in full swing. The plumbing is in, The walls are framed. They cut the hole for the egress window today and that will be completed today.

Marna, here's hoping the look for a job is short.

OldMom (Theresa) --

You've been hanging in there, a long time, with SparkPeople. Kinda like me. You are probably more regular than I was, prior to 2010. Before that, I'd come and go. I'd lose 10 or 15 pounds, then I'd plateau. And, I'd quit. Then, I'd go back on steroids and gain it back. I yo-yo-ed in the 165-185 pound range for about 5 years or more.

I don't know how to "get" the motivation to lose the weight, if it's not there. But, at least for me, motivation is absolutely key. What finally motivated me was pure vanity. I had a 30-year college reunion and my daughter's wedding both coming up in the summer of 2011, and I didn't want anyone to see me while I was obese. I set some reasonable goals, and, I knew that I'd been partially successful in the past, so, I only hoped that, if I didn't quit, I could be MORE successful this time. And, I was determined not to quit.

Also, I knew someone who I usually saw once a year, and she had lost 50 pounds since a year ago with low carbs and almost no exercise. And, I would possibly have really rebelled at the exercise idea. So, I thought, "I can do that." (I ended up changing things some and doing "good carbs"/low starch instead of low carbs; and during maintenance, I have actually added exercise, believe it or not.)

Even though my initial motivator was "vanity", I've been so pleased with the health benefits, that they have become a motivator to keep the weight off.

My advice, Theresa, is to figure out what will motivate you to lose weight. There is a difference between wanting to "lose weight" and wanting to "be thin". Losing weight implies and active participation in the process. Being thin is only the end goal. You have to find something that will motivate both. Figure out what, about the actual weight-loss process, could give you joy.

Over the years, you've probably read a lot, and thought a lot, about weight loss strategies. There is not just "one" way to lose weight. People lose weight all the time, and there are many different ways to get there. Be picky. Pick and choose what strategies you tolerate, which might even be a fun challenge, and which you detest. Throw out the ones you detest, immediately. But, then, commit yourself to a few other strategies. Maybe only one new one at a time.

You can do it. I yo-yo-ed for a long time. But, I did it. And, I've mostly maintained for over a year. (With the beginning of peri-menopause, I've added about 5 pounds. But, I'm still in my size 6's, so I've decided that I'm OK with that. This might be my attainable "norm" now.)

Start with a reasonable short term goal (scale or tape measure), and one or two measurable steps that you plan to take to get there. Then re-evaluate after some time, and keep re-evaluating. Change your strategies if they aren't a good "fit" for you. Choose strategies that don't feel like deprivation and don't feel unmanageable. Create your own program. You can do it.

Marna, glad you are feeling better.

Faith - I wish my weight was doing as well as yours and Marnas.

Been tearing down our basement the past week. need to call to have the dumpster emptied. We are moving all of our stuff to my daughters to clear out the basement.

Fell and now have a bruise on my knee but did not break anything. Muscles are sore but mostly from working muscles that sitting down doesn't work. LOL. Hope every one is doing well today;.

We're both still doing OK for our weight, MARNA. Even though I'm not exactly where I want to be. My BMI is good, and I still fit in my size 6's. And, your weight looks good too.

Thanks Faith we have gone over all of them. My house is to small for a roommate and with my RLS and the MS I keep very odd hours and it just would not work here with roommate. When I lose the insurance money that is paying the mortgage I will qualify for food stamps but really don't want to go that route. We are looking into all the difference agencies that we can find it is simply what I will physically be able to do and maintain.

If I could just get well now it has been such a hard time for me since December one thing after the other so will hope I can get myself healthy enough for what has to come. I pray that I will be able to do this.

I'm sorry, MARNA, about the financial difficulties that put keeping your home in jeopardy. I hope you can earn enough to continue to make payments on your mortgage.

Are there other creative options you could explore to help with finances? Check with social service agencies about low income programs that might help with utility bills or rent, or income or something? Or, consider taking in a roommate who can pay some rent and contribute to household expenses?

Maybe you'll get a decent tax refund that you can sock away in the bank, and use for those "rainy day" months when money is most tight for you.

Thank you OLDMOM. We had a talk last night my sister her husband and I and I really have no choice I will just have to hang on to my house and try and work enough to pay the mortgage. Not sure yet if I am going to be able to but right now is my only choice with the housing the way it is. I simply would not get enough to survive with.

Faith, I have never kept track of my weight pound per pound as you. I kept track of my exercising but never my food or weight. Now that I have been so sick I have not even been doing that. I do not weigh myself every day now once a week. my average is 123 I should also change mine. You have not been on so I don't even know if you have read my bad time I have had over the last 3 1/2 months. So there is nothing to see on mine. Sorry I am not good at keeping things written as you. I can tell by my clothes if I have gained or not. Since I can still wear a 3 jeans I know I am ok. Right now I know better than usual because I have been so sick for so long. In fact I am amazed that I have not broke the 119 battle but alas no don't think I ever will after these last few months if that didn't do it nothing will. The menopause is a killer the whole body is your enemy.

Right now I am battling a different war and that is losing my home. I have to make some very important decisions so I am focusing on that rather than anything else. I know over the last 5 years I have lost just short of 50 pounds and I am very pleased with myself, some ups and downs but slowly I have done it. I really don't care if I drop more I am very happy with myself I just want to stay in this neighborhood of weight.

I need to change my weight ticker. I've been above 118 since about April 2012, actually. For awhile, my range was 118-120. The last 4 months or so, it has often been 120-122. Seems like this peri-menopause is just making maintenance tough, even though I added Curves, 3x a week, beginning in August.

So, MARNA, I haven't been under 120 very frequently lately either. We're in the same boat. I post monthly weights in my profile, if you want to check up on me. It helps to keep me accountable.

I have been sick so much in the last 6 weeks, it is getting really old. I have not had to go on antibiotics but like you said, it is getting old really fast.

I think I am going to invest in some probiotics and get my gut working better. They say that fermented food is even better then taking probiotics but I do not care for saurkraut and pickles that much. I like them but not on daily basis.

Hearing aids are doing great. I forgot to put them on today but will put them on before I head to the Casino.

hope you get better quickly. It has been a heck of a year sickness.

Good morning all. OLDMOM how are the hearing aids working? Can't believe that it is March all ready. I am sick again on antibodics for the third time and codeine since the first of the year. This is getting very old very fast.

When they had me on antibodics for five days and nights 24 hours a day for 5 days when I was in the hospital they killed all the bad stuff as well as the good stuff and I guess I am wide open for anything and there is a lot out there this winter.

I posted a blog about a recent MS appointment. It went pretty well. www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

The doctor also talke about MS sometimes "burning itself out" when we get into our 50-s or 60's, and we might quit having flares. Has that happened to anyone here?

Hi OLDMOM I am healing still a little sore but went off all pain meds. I have three people in my family that has the that disease can't remember how to spell it. They think that I should get tested. They also said or the DR did that if I would have been tested for it my MS may not have been. That one I need to do a little reading on. Celiac or something like that sorry.

Well that is funny about the birds LOL. I know that if the hearing aids work go for it. I am glad you could get them.

Good morning Marna - Happy Valentines day to you also.

Yes, I am feeling much better. I stopped eating gluten again and viola, I felt at 100%, that is 100% for me, by the end of the week. I have to quit sabatoging myself. It is a great step in the right direction.

Purchased hearing aids and need to have them adjusted a bit. I kept hearing a funny noise today, like a tweet. I thought it was the hearing aid but realized it was the birds outside my front window. Wow! It will take time to get used to hearing.

How are you feeling? Hope you are healing.

The last I have seen her post on the other site that she is on, was Jan 26. Not sure what is going on.

I am terrible about posting. I will work harder.

Hi OLDMOM, I know you are right but is hard. Have you heard from Faith? I am wondering if she is ok I have left several messages and she has not answered them. She is usually pretty good at that. She has gone so long with out a flair up.

Your mcmuffins sound really good and 400 calories is not bad at all. Aw food LOL

Hi Marna -

Don't get too down on yourself. you have been through much. Let your body have a chance to heal from the surgery. It probably has to do with water retention, which comes with inflammation.

today is going to be busy. I need get ready for shopping tomorrow and need to register my dog for obedience class. Our new dog is a gem but he needs a firm hand, or I should say voice. He minds the others somewhat but he minds me much better.

I just figured out today that my homemade egg mcmuffin is a really good meal with under 400 calaries. So satisfying. Just need to start eating more veggies.

Hope everyone has a good day.

OLDMOM that is good about the weighing once a week. I was very upset when I finally got on the scales gained 5 pounds and that's from not eating? I guess it is the IV's sugar water I don't know but was very disappointed. Hopefully that will come off slowly.

Faith are you around I was sure you would jump in with some answers but you didn't. Are you OK are you sick also with your MS?
