Made it the whole week!
Measured this morning, right at 37.5. I swear, I am gaining/losing the same half inch. I guess this is my version of those 5 lbs that so many people play the "lose/gain game" with?

I resisted the urge to step on the scale all week, even the day I was weighed at the doctor's office before I had a piece of glass removed from my foot. I really wanted to know how my scale compared, but stayed strong.

On the plus side, I think all the treadmill walking I have been doing has lowered my blood pressure considerably, given the reading at the doctor's office.

Okay, just got done with 20 minutes of modified Zumba DVD. Since I am holding myself accountable like a grown up, I couldn't not do any exercise tonight, and I will end up with my yoga and stretching before I go to bed too. Getting lunch and breakfast for tomorrow ready, my clothes laid out, I am ready for greatness. I am going to peak what next week's challenge will be, so I can already make sure I make good mental choices tonight in preparation :)
All of you have been very encouraging to me, so thank you all! Good night now!

I looked myself over in the mirror this morning, and I realized that I might not at all lose any weight this week. And then I recounted how my motivation was very good this week, how I made good choices, even when I made bad ones. For example, we did go out tonight, and I opted for cheese tortellini, but I had marinara sauce instead of the Alfredo sauce they were supposed to be in. This is a huge change for me! I am very cheese oriented. I had a mini blueberry muffin at work, but I didn't have two. I took 4 oz. of Coca Cola instead of 12 oz. You know, those are all not great foods, but like L. said, it is supposed to be a healthy lifestyle, not a diet that is gonna stop just so I can pig out again. So my focus really was how to "be" around all that and still come out a winner in the end. I drank my 24 oz of unsweetened brewed green tea, which is great for me. I feel as if I am taking the challenge serious enough to cut myself some slack, and learning to live a real life where I am exposed to all the foods and opportunities to do NOTHING, and I still make good choices. I move more, take small chances to do leg raises, walk a little further, stretch while waiting for the pasta water to boil. It can be a lifestyle. And if it is becoming a lifestyle, I can't be too strict, because I will just stop altogether and pretend food and lack of exercise has no effect on me. Does that make any sense? I am very happy that L. made me think all these very good for me thoughts.

So how are you all doing? Any struggles or successes to report? Anyone need encouragement or a round of applause (or both).... .like Alicia here. APPLAUSE!!!!!!
?

Hugs to all!

Paolina - every minute you get movement in is better than a minute of sitting on your booty! Good for you!

Another day without pulling the tape out. I woke up this morning and barely recognized my body. I have gone from a BMI of 37.2 to 32.7 (as of last October or November, which is the last time I stepped on a scale) in the course of a year. It has made a drastic difference in how I look. I will say that taking the focus from the tape, and actually just looking at my body, has been a bit fun this week.

Paolina, I am cheering you on. I do am in the same boat. I have a knee injury, so I really do what I can and push myself for 10 minutes at a time. I applaud you for even a minute of movement. Be encouraged. :)

Woke up to 5 Sun Salutations, healthy breakfast and packed a healthy lunch. Now my poodle has to got to poodle jail (the lab can stay cageless, she doesn't eat the house, lol) and off to work I go.

Happy day everyone, and good job on not peeking at the scale!!!!

Managed to fight temptation again! My size 14 pants were feeling really loose all day yesterday (man, never really thought I'd say THAT in my life! YAY SPARK!), and I was *so* tempted to measure.
I woke up late this morning, so there was no time for temptation! emoticon

So even though I was running a bit late this morning, I did not let myself get into the shower without my 5 Sun Salutations. I truly thought about that book I want to get and just started doing my yoga. Same with drinking water, I kept refilling that cup. I am quite determined to finish this challenge in a successful way. Since my knee is killing me, I will be doing another chair workout for cardio. That was weird, but very effective. These Spark People really come up with a bunch of great stuff :) :) :)
Hope you are all feeling well and sticking with it!

Well, I'm new to the group, so I will post my weight from this AM 238, and try very hard to not weigh again until Monday morning. I have a BOGO coupon for the movies burning a hole in my wallet right now, so maybe I'll use that up with the DH this weekend :)

My reward for myself is to go away for a night/evening and just do what I want to do.

I find that I do not have to weigh myself often anyway unless a challenge requires it. How I feel is what shows accomplishment to me. Yes, we do want to check the scales too, but being able to walk without being winded is good. Being able to do cardio for several minutes without having to break shows accomplishment. This will be interesting.

Paolina - love that reward!

I had to fight temptation this morning, man! I woke up, looked in the mirror, and thought "holy cow, I'm rockin' it today!" Usually that's when I would get the tape measure to see if I am lower than usual or not. I find it fascinating, how our perceptions can be very different from reality (sometimes when I feel like a total lard-butt, my measurements are lower... while at other times, I feel like a sexy mofo, and am at the high end of my measurement range. Weird!).

Managed to resist so far!

After writing this loooong thoughtful blog, I lost it in cyberspace, lol. So I have to give you all a little recap here. My motivation this time around is really to lower my cholesterol before it gets to be a problem. I have been tracking my food and being so proud and encouraged when I managed to stay within range for cholesterol, fiber, water intake, being good with the sodium etc. That has made such a difference to me, that it is actually motivation enough at this point. However, I would love to reward myself with a little cholesterol book by the end of the week and this is what I want....

It even has yummy recipes in the appendix that sound amazing. So that's what I am getting :)

Alecia, I think that's a perfect alternative....put away that tape and then concentrate on your efforts.

Admitting the problem is the first step (hee hee hee!)

I can't remember if we did it this way last time or not...
Since I do not use a scale, and do measurements, can I do the challenge, but without using my tape? I have gotten a bit OCD about measuring my waist several times a week. Can I do that and have it count? Just put the tape up somewhere and not measure until next Monday?

I love this challenge and I always see positive results with it! The pounds have been creeping on the last 3-4 months for me and it's time for them to go. I weighed in this morning and will avoid the scale until next week!

My reward for meeting the challenge is to take some "me" time and actually read the books I got for my birthday (almost one year ago) and Christmas.

Yay Ute! So happy to see you back!

Yes, drag that journal out! That's the point! I hope by sharing my experiences, someone may see themselves in them and maybe it will get people thinking. :D

Great, great challenge and .... well, it's almost like a blog, isn't it? Thanks for sharing! I will need the rest of the day to digest what you wrote and think about it. I might even have to pull out my diary (and dust it off, it doesn't get much use most months) and work through my thoughts on that one.

Have a lovely Sunday!

Hello all...

It's Self-Esteem MC week so let's talk about some self-esteem, shall we? emoticon

We get different and interesting results every time this MC comes up! For some, it's a struggle but for others, it's just what the doctor ordered....see what you think!

The following is most of the post from the 1st time we did this challenge, over years ago now! Wow! At the time, the team was brand new and I was close to my goal weight. I was struggling with making eating well a lifestyle change; trying to see my involvement in SP as more than just a "diet" plan. And, frankly, that is a lot of why I have stayed here on SP.

Once before, I'd quit SP before after hitting goal weight and went right back up there in weight because I went right back to my old bad ways. The following post lays out the MC for this coming up week starting, as always, on Monday:

I've seen a shift in my attitude about..... what motivates me..... recognizing small accomplishments in myself and my choices of reward for doing well. Like food. Let's me honest, most of us are here because we like good food, yes? Well, good food used to motivate me. After starting SP the 2nd time I had even said to myself, "as soon as I reach my goal weight of 129, I am going to reward myself with a gigantic burrito & chips & flan and I will be so happy to get to eat that again!" Hmmm....something wrong with that picture? I couldn't WAIT to get off the "diet" and get back to eating good food. My thought process still was mixed up!

Since, those feelings have changed. In fact, when I reached my weight goal I didn't want that burrito at all! My first thought when I realized I was at the point to reward myself was, "Oh my gosh, that burrito was probably more than 1200 calories in one sitting!!! ...and HOW am I going to log that in to SP? NOT worth it!"

My thought process now is more along the lines of: Do I really want to reward myself with something that will set me back? After I've worked so hard? The answer is a resounding NOOOO!

This weeks MC comes in two parts. The first part will focus on rewards. What types of rewards motivate YOU? Think about it: is it money, or a new outfit, a trip? We had a motivating challenge at the end of the year. It did inspire me. I carry that little picture that we printed & put in the kitchen around in my wallet now so I look at it every time I open the wallet. It's a picture of me, a couple years ago at 119 pounds (too skinny, I know) trying to get some 6 pack abs. I never quite got there but I DO recognize my EFFORT. It was a huge accomplishment to have lost the 50 pounds that picture represents. Anyway.....

Part 1: Post by the end of the day Monday (midnight) something that, should you complete Part 2 of this MC, you will reward yourself with. It could be a trip to the movies, some undisturbed alone time in the bathtub or as 'big' as new diamond necklace; whatever will incent you personally, REALLY incent you. There are two restrictions to choosing your reward:
1) it cannot be a food reward (see above!)
2) it must be a reward for YOU; not your kids, your husband or your dogs....of course, they can be involved, but it cannot be FOR them. For example, I might tend toward buying my dogs a new bed or some goodies as a reward.....not this time, the reward must be for YOU!!!!

So, the point is, post your reward choice by Monday midnight. Once next Sunday rolls around and you have completed Part 2 of the MC, pick something that you WILL reward yourself with and Part 2 won't be a 'gimme', so make it a good one. (smile)

Part 2: Here is where we focus on the EFFORT that we are going to reward ourselves for, rather than the OUTCOME. You know, I had a super great start with Spark People and lost 2 pounds per week pretty consistently there for several months. However, through a series of being sick & some recent hormone imbalances (menop..YIKES!), I've gained 20 pounds back.

Yet, and this is the important part, I still tend to judge my progress solely on the number reflected on the scale. If it doesn't go down, I have to be honest, I get a bit demotivated. That kind of thinking let's me know I still sometimes look at this journey as a 'diet' rather than the lifestyle change I want it to be. Some thoughts are just very hard to get out of the head! SOOOOO, that being said:

Part 2: We agree to not get on the scale a single time during the week this MC is in affect. Rules of engagement are as follows:

1. Log in your 'Start Weight' Monday morning, as always.
2. After that, we agree not to weigh ourselves for each day this MC is in effect. That means Tues through Sunday, no peeks at the scale! Golden Crown for no peeks:
3. Should you 'break under pressure' and decide to get on the scale, you must post to the group and tell us your feelings about it. In fact, we'd like to hear about it even if you are making the MC....Did it do for you what you thought it would or didn't it? What were your reasons for getting on it?
4. Post throughout the week on your progress, your thoughts & your feelings about this MC.

Hopefully, this weeks 'mental/motivational' MC will help us focus more on the effort we are putting in to what we are doing....becoming healthier people, living a better lifestyle....than the outcome of just numbers on a scale. Feel free to post how you feel about what I've written, about the challenge, how it applies in your life, etc....I want to hear from you. YOU are what keep me motivated!

Golden Crown for those who make it the week! emoticon

Hugs ya'll,

L.
