Hi All,

Apologies, I haven't been around much the last couple of months I have been travelling and hosting a series of visitors. Thankfully normality is upon me and I should be back up to date in no time, including the monthly stats.

Hope we are all having a good start to the week. Mine can't be any worse than last week, I'm still recovering from the flu but at least I can get out of bed this week.

Can I remind you all as the month end approaches to post a total for your January miles to assist me in preparing the statistics.

Thanks,

Kate

Are we all having a positive start to the new year:

1. I've lost over 14lbs since the 1st January.
2.

Add your New Years positives and pass it on.

The up side to that is I am off for the next 4 days!!! I work S,M and T.Hope you had a good walk. I'll be busy the next 4 days catching up on my work-outs.

Hope your day gets better Dragonfly. I'm under a pile of paperwork at the moment but there is a bit of blue sky out there so next stop is the park for a walk. Have a good one.

No of course you didn't over step, I appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you haven't given up on us, as I said we may not be the most dynamic of teams but having said that our team members have over the last 5 years have logged over 165,500 miles of cardio...no small feat. Perhaps you could say we do our talking on the roads, lakes, mountains of the world, wherever we can cover our miles.

Have a great week.

Hi Kate. Thanks for your reply. I just hope I did not over step my bounds. I do not like stepping on anyone's toes. I can understand it must be quite the responsibility to be a team leader or moderator. Anyway I was not put out. Just thought it was strange there was no chatter. So far I have 203,720 more miles before I reach the Moon. To the Moon Alice... and away we go! lol

Hi Dragonfly,

Thanks for your comments, I suppose compared to many other teams we are a rather muted bunch, most of our posting is done on the threads for logging miles and I do send out periodic emails to the team. I do agree we could probable be more active and as the sole moderator of this team (Mundy has long left the team) I take responsibility for that. I haven't been as committed to SP myself as I might have been and it is only because I moderate this team that I have stayed involved which I must say is a blessing to to me. I did ask if others were interested in helping out as leader some time ago but got no takers.

Anyway having said all that I am back and committed and hopefully the next newbie who arrives will feel more welcome. I'm sorry we have disappointed you and hope it hasn't put you off too much.

All the best

I must say I am new to this team. I joined because it seemed like a active team. As I look at this chat forum I see the last post was almost a year ago. This sound not just to welcome new members. But to encourage one another, vent, celebrate, ask questions. As well as get to know our team-mates. I hope this is the year we are more active and chatty as a team.

Hi Gwyn,

Though a good idea we passed all the layers of atmosphere, stratosphere etc. ages ago. I was surprised how short a distance they actually were. Leave it with me and maybe I'll invent a few landmarks to motivate us.

I'm wondering if there are any landmarks on the way to the moon? Perhaps when we reach the cloud level or leave the atmosphere? I am scientifically challenged but thought a few shorter term goals might help on my journey....emoticon

Hi Mary Alice,

Welcome again. You are welcome to log your miles for any type of cardio exercise you do which covers actual distance or virtual distance e.g stationary bike etc. Some people use the thread a full log of their monthly cardio and will include mins as well as miles. However it is only miles which are included in the monthly tally. You may if you are unsure of miles guestimate the miles covered or I also use mapmyrun which is a website which allows you to trace a local route and find the distance covered.

Whatever way you plan to interact with the team, we hope you enjoy yourself. Every mile counts so don't be afraid to add it. All I would ask is that the end of each month you post a total for the month it makes my job of collating the stats much easier.

Thanks

Kate

My name is MaryAlice, I'm new and I have a question. I was looking over some the other months miles posted and I see min for other kinds of exercise. Are we suppose to record all exercise? Do min translate into miles. I just would like to know what you want.

The nice thing about this team is that reaching the moon is a team effort and every mile logged is a mile closer to our goal.

emoticon Isabelle!

Like you, I use a stationary (recumbent) bike to get in my miles. I also do some walking/hiking, rowing, and swimming and add those as well.

You said your monthly goal was 200 miles - if the average distance to the moon is 238,857 miles (due to the slightly elliptical orbit) and your goal is 200 miles/month, then it will only take you 1,194.28 months or 99.52 years to get there. I understand the vacuum of space is a great preserver, so I may just say hi when we both make it!

I just joined the team yesterday and have logged my miles for August and September. I have logged all year round but really got serious when I got my new indoor bike in August, so that is where I am going to start. I don't count miles when I swim and the amount is unsignificant when I walk so I am going to ignore those.

This challenge is a great idea and I am glad I found this team after almost 5 years being on SP... Better late than never, huh? LOL

FULL MOON FACTS

The full moon is a lunar phase occurring when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun and all three bodies are aligned in a straight line. It appears as an entire circle in the sky.

The only month that can occur without a full moon is February.

The world's tidal ranges are at their maximum during the full moon when the sun, earth and moon are in line.

The full moon is given different names, depending on when it appears:

January - Moon After Yule, Wolf Moon, or Old Moon
February - Snow Moon or Hunger Moon
March - Sap Moon, Crow Moon, Worm Moon or Lenten Moon
April - Grass Moon, Frog Moon or Egg Moon
May - Milk Moon or Planting Moon
June - Rose Moon, Flower Moon, or Strawberry Moon
July - Thunder Moon or Hay Moon
August - Grain Moon or Green Corn Moon
September - Fruit Moon or Harvest Moon
October - Harvest Moon or Hunter's Moon
November - Hunter's Moon, Frosty Moon, or Beaver Moon
December - Moon Before Yule or Long Night Moon.

Hello to all the Bike to the Moon team,

I just wanted to welcome any newcomers and say how glad I am to see such great miles being posted especially during the Summer vacation. Before the end of this week I will post the miles stats for May, June and July so if you have been delaying posting some retrospective miles now would be the time to do it. I'll let you know when you can check out the results.

Have a good one everyone and keep on posting.

Your fearless leader

Greetings to all you Bike to the Mooners! Happy Halloween one and all. I have been MIA, on the road again but I'm back. I will be posting the miles update up to the end of September as soon as I get myself organised. I am also getting back in the sense of my commitment to a more healthy lifestyle, I have been letting things slip for too long now.

Have a great Halloween weekend everyone, enjoy the trick or treating but go easy on the sweet stuff.

I got curious about the possibility of actually biking the distance to the moon. Since the orbit of the moon is elliptical, distance varies: average is about 239,000 mi, closest is 225,500 mi, and farthest is 250,000. After crunching the numbers, if I average 10 miles/day, it will take 65.5 years to get there - and another 65.5 years if I want to come back (might just make that a one-way).

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you will land amongst the stars.

I know i haven't done as many miles as I would like but I've slacked in my trainning.
I've had pain in my ankle for 8 years and yet i still run. I went to the doctor and need to get an MRI done so he and I can decided what to do to get rid of the pain.
I will do a few miles a week until I find out more about my options.

Overslept a little this morning. Yesterday's workout was tough but great. I've decided to get serious about running/bike riding so that starting in the fall I can enter actual races.

I'm hoping there are a lot of "bikers" on this team and that someone can help me. I joined the team at the beginning of this month because we got a new stationary bike, and though this team isn't all about biking, well, it's sort of an invitation to bike. Now, I like riding the stationary bike..I can multitask, it doesn't take a lot of room in my house, it's not loud.. but there is one thing about it that I thought would be an issue and yes, it is an issue: my ARSE hurts!! I'm no lightweight, and I don't know if that is something that will get better with weight loss.. I know there are fancy seats you can buy, but before I spend money on one, I thought I'd see if anyone has had success with one.. It's not unbearable, but I do believe it will eventually impact the amount of time I'll spend on the bike, right now I do 30 minutes, but would eventually like to work myself up to 45..any suggestions from any experienced riders?

thanks!

I hope I can advertise my team here! I don't want to take away from this team, but wanted to share some information about the one I just created.

It's called "Healthy Book Club." Every month we pick a book to read together and discuss. The book HAS to be "healthy." One that will motivate, inspire, and uplift us as a team. The first book is going to be "50 ways to soothe yourself without food." While we discuss the book, we'll also have challenges that go along with the book and exercise challenges we can do while we read! I have very high hopes for this team. I would love to read, learn, grow, chat, and lose weight with other book lovers!

Thanks,
Elizabeth

Sorry to hear about your troubles, glad that no one was seriously hurt in your family.....don't let it get you down and ruin your plans....
I am glad that you have somewhere to be while the damage is repaired.....it is amazing what smoke can do and what can be done to correct it....hang in there.

Livid!

So just when things are going well for me diet-wise and exercise-wise... my neighbour has to have his car go on fire in his garage which spread to my garage and smoke went into my house and made my house unliveable. Long story and we're all fine. No one was harmed but I really really really want to sue my neighbour for negligence as his car was super old and he should have gotten rid of it!

So I'm displaced and living at my parents with husband and babies which totally bites. Okay. Not totally bites, its fine. Its just I want to be in my own house, able to wake up early, do my exercises, cook my healthy meals, etc. Its not possible when its not your own home. Even baby is totally disrupted and waking up earlier than usual and making my planning difficult.

Hate murphy.
Hate my neighbour!!!!!!

Lost 5.2 lbs though this week! Hope i don't effin gain it back.

Kate,

YES, I do P90X workout tapes.

I read on SparksPeople (who knows when) that if you do "X" amount of time in a cardio work out it will equal "X" miles.....IS that as clear as mud? =)

I only wanted to know so I could add to the miles to your challenge.

Thanks for the info!
I will just continue to add only my running and cycling =)

PS
THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO! I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!

When you say cardio Rainrun do you mean workout tape, aerobics etc or is it something else. I think workouts would be hard to conver to miles but I did find a conversion for spinning. I see if I can find it again if that is of any help.

I've re done the team goal and set it at 2 miles per day/person and when you click on the goal to say you have achieved it will prompt you to enter the number of miles you have done. The target for the team is 2,500 miles for the month. Hope that works out beter.

Thanks again Sandy for the dig out...that is a much better set up.

On another team, they set a gol that was doable by individuals, and you get to track it in your spark streaks.
I would sugest setting a goal of 10 miles per day per person and then we can sign up for that. My understanding of team goals are that the team sets a goal but breaks it down in to what can be done by an individual each day.
One of my other teams has 20 min of exercise per day. When I do that (or more) I get to record it and it shows up for the team total.
So, if you set a goal that is reachable by an individual on a daily basis, we can log it and it adds up for the final month goal for the team.
So you may even want to set the daily goal LOW for those of us in winter climes who can't ride so our meager miles will count to the 2500 miles for the month for the team.

Sorry I just set it up and you beat me to the explanation, the 2500 miles are for the full team to complete in the month. I'm just trying it out so I'm sorry if I confused you. If anyone has experience with team goals and can offer advice I'm all ears. If you click on the thread it gives a short explanation.

Hi Kate,

I'm back but I am so sorely out of shape (gained about 50 lbs) so my miles are minimal for now. Today is day 3 of my comeback. So far so good. I've been doing some strength training and some cardio, and so far I've made healthier choices for food too. But I don't think I move more than 1 mile a day for now.
Hugs

I got a new exercise bike for Christmas!emoticon Of course, they didn't have one in stock, so I have to wait until Wednesday to get it. I have done very little biking this month, so I should be well rested and ready to make up for it in January!emoticon

ok I have forced myself to come on here and log my lunchtime binge. I have totally binged on a bunch of stupid little things. some cheese, crackers, a dip, almonds, hard boiled eggs and gross a teaspoon straight out of the jar of nutella... don't ask! I kind of feel gross from the weird combination of food... and lol no i am not pregnant.

binging sucks. how do you stop yourself once you start?

Hey Ursula, good to see you on the board already. Fill in those October miles, many team members would only fill in there miles at the end of the month, so no problem there as the others say we can do with all the help we can get!!!

Hi All,

Would love to join your group. Don't do much real bike riding, but do daily recumbent bike riding. I log minutes, miles and total miles. Have been riding since the beginning of January, as of this morning have logged 3935.24 miles. Would love to join your journey to the moon.

My name is Ursula, age 50, married, 1 son age 18, 1 pet dog. Live in PA. I ride daily for two main reasons, arthritis (already had a left hip replacement over 4 years ago) and weight maintenance after losing 30 lbs.

I can easily back fill the month of October or can start fresh today.

One of my other teams counts 30 minutes low impact aerobics as 1 mile. If it is high impact aerobics, they count it as 15 minutes = 1 mile. I don't know how accurate that is, but maybe you could try it!

ADOZNROSAS:

I do not log miles from aerobics class only because I wouldn't know how to measure it. However, I still list it on the log thread just so i don't look like I am doing nothing ;)

Hope that helps!

Hi All,

Great to see some old friends back and some new friends joining us. If anyone needs a hand with how to cut and past their miles please get in touch with me directly and I'll give you the ABC guide.

I've posted September's stats, well done to all who are clocking up those miles and reaching their goals. If anyone has any suggestions as to how we might drum up some more support let me know as we are slowing down month by month and are risk of been stranded in outer space!!!

Have a good week

I need to get back out here to log my miles. I take an 1.5 aerobic water class twice a week... can any of that time be translated into miles?

I am at my sons house in S. C. until next week, but I will be back.

Thanks Phyllis.

Sorry to all those of you who have been waiting with baited breath for August's stats to be posted. I have been away for a lot of September and just haven't got around to them, I hope to remedy that in the next week or so. Also a reminder to post any outstanding September miles as soon as possible after the end of the month!

I have already posted the template for October so post those targets miles and a reminder now with the dark days and evenings ahead for those of us in the northern hemisphere, light up and keep safe whether on your bike, walking or jogging.

Thanks. I felt good the rest of the day just because I chose to ride instead of eating. Hopefully, I will do it again when the challenge arises.
