FINALLY got rid of the splint on my thumb/wrist, but I'm still dealing with the injury... otherwise I'm okay--but there are other things going on right now, not much time to be online... my friend and former MIL is critically ill right now, and she fell getting out of bed yesterday. She's not expected to make it to the end of the week... that and a pair of sick kitties, it's all kind of crazy, y'know?

Life, right? LOL

I get by... thanks for caring!

Using the side of my left hand fingers, being right hand dominate. Used the setting on 5 not 6 like before. Been able to obtain an adequate sample.
The web site as suggested other contact points for the test. Palms or forearms. I went to a diabetic education class. One of the diabetics shared with me she tests on her feet. Wow!
Some friends who have this affliction, test themselves once when ever.
My A1C is suppose to be due soon. It seems the blood stick test can parallel the success of the A1C, but not always. Does anyone have a successful A1C score, and a Doctor states don't test for 3-6 months till the next A1C score? Is the blood stick method for D2 a forever and forever thing, till death do us part?

Someone asked how often to test... Some doctors say once or twice a week, some once a day, some... well.
First thing in the morning, of course--
--and if I plan on eating, technically I should test first. That way if it's low or high I can adjust what I do/eat accordingly. That's my endo's take on it. I have a stomach condition and I'm on a carb count as well as a sliding scale. I eat six times a day, and I test six times a day. More if I'm sick...
I would suggest you follow your specialist's instructions on how often to test. If he/she hasn't given you any specific number, I'd ask!

and keep asking questions here, too.
People who live with it can tell you things about a medical condition that a doctor may never know! lol

the lotion will make the soreness go away and the sides will make it better..as i said there are a whole lot of people out there in pain for no need my endo says that and he is forever telling the nurses who do for the a1c that there is no need to hurt the patients
may you have some better luck with a new method and remember i am always here and if you don't get it perfect the first time it will get better just keep it off the pad

Thanks for your attention Mary. Sorry you have been doing this testing for 20 years.

I was instructed to hit the "pad" of my fingers, and to use 6 setting. It has become very painful to strike that area, and my sharp container is filling it up from the tracking.

I will attempt to work on the side of the finger and reduce the setting on the lancet. I have lowered the setting before, 5 then even 4. Find it doesn't pull the droplet up. More of a longer horizontal specimen, which won't register for the meter strip. I will attempt again though.

I hope the side of my fingers will be true to your advice of being a good contact point and a better source for the test. I have tried to ice my fingers for they have become very sore.

ok let's see if we can fix this online here..first 6 is a really high number i wash my hands in warm soap and rinse well before the stick..that brings the blood closer to the skin..i find the two outer fingers work best for this both hands as they tend to have less callous on them from everyday use. and then if you are hitting on the pad of the finger (from where they take finger prints) you are doing yourself a disservice for sure take those from the side of the finger about midnail not quite as many nerves but good blood supply i get blood on those four fingers with a 2 and i have been doing that for 20 years at least after you are finished get some lotion on those fingers..i use eurcerin or vaseline intensive care with aloe ultra healing i can't even see the places i've been poking holes for years if you do these things your hands will be in better shape for the sticking..make sure you change that lancet everytime they get bad because they lose their sharpness
as for the setting try it on the next lower one and keep going down until you cannot raise the blood this should only take a few days..those nurses have no idea how some of those numbers feel and they are always sticking in the wrong place meaning of course on the pad that is the only time mine hurts and i rarely get good blood drop from there i'm for no pain and for not having to talk yourself into testing because your fingers are sore let me know how this works for you my friend

Amy, I track my blood sugars once a day. You can track your score in the nutrition tracker. My doctor asked me to test it at 4 different times. Also, to rotate each day to the next test time. Does everyone track their blood sugars every day? Does anyone rotate the times when they test themselves?

At the meeting I did eat the sandwich and apple.

As I was not hungry did not eat the cottage cheese.

A little after I got home I had wasa and peanut butter.

Dinner was salad, salmon, 1/2 baked potato and mixed veggies. Had 1/2 banana for dessert.

I am grateful that for today I did okay.

Pat - thanks so much for caring - really appreciate it.

Thank you all so much. I like the cottage cheese idea - I may take that with me with a Wasa crisp (or whatever it is called)

Also, I completely forgot about the glucouse tracker. I used it for a while and it completely went out of my head.

Another tough day is sr. meeting day (today). So the plan is to put more turkey on the sandwich and take the cottage cheese snack if I start getting hungry later on. I will have with me the sandwich, apple, and cottage cheese.

Amy – I test, usually, twice a day. Morning and rotate after meals. My dr. said morning but when I went to the diabetes education center they suggested twice. I haven’t gone to the endocrinologist – just my primary. I am thinking of making an appt. with endocrinologist.

Thank you all so much - for the ideas and encouragement.

I agree with other posters, make that snack higher protein. I find a serving of nuts does the trick for me. I eat the snack slowly. I make myself wait 15 minutes before eating anything else - I tell myself anyone can wait 15 minutes. Almost always, the hunger is past and I am good until the next meal.

as pat says more protein will carry that snack further that can be cottage cheese hard boiled eggs..more turkey on your sandwich but we are talking more protein with the snack it cause the carbs to not spike and be gone so fast and that avoids the hunger..ask the dietician about a meal range and snack range..my endo wrote mine on a presciption pad 45 to 60 for each meal and snacks from 15 to 25 and my calorie range is 1200 to 1600 a day..i was fat my whole life and ate iin the 800 to 1000 calorie range i was always hungry and when the endo suggested i do 1200 to 1600 i told him i'll be big as a house..he said you are already and what you are doing isn't working my dear (weighed 378 at the time) well that's enough to make me cry and i did but he told me about spark people and i was already seeing the nutritionist and he said it costs nothing at this point to turn it around can you do it??..it worked for me more food than i ever dared eat but planned for and snacks good golly iwas eating all day it seemed and 273 pounds dropped off and has stayed off..if i had not listened to him i would still be doing all the stuff and maybe be even bigger spark people works for sure so discuss ranges with your doc next time and go in with a firm plan you can do it
and we are with you

Naomi you should not go too long without eating. It rather depends on what hours you get up and go to bed. I find I must eat at fairly regular times. I like my Breakfast to have some protein to keep me going till lunch. If I am out I usually have an apple or some Almonds in my purse. If I know I will be out a long time I take along a snack and eat it as soon as I am feeling hungry.
Protein keeps us satisfied usually. Try to keep track of what you ate and when you are feeling hungry. You have to work out what and when you eat especially on your long MahJong days

Please stay in touch and do keep thinking about what you eat and when Pat in Maine.

Pynetree - I do play Mah Jongg every week with the same people and we rotate houses. I did bring lunch. turkey sandwich and an apple.

Now that I wrote about the sandwich - if I remember correctly a few weeks ago I added more turkey to the sandwich than usual. I'm going to do that when I go to the sr. mtg. tomorrow and see if that helps.

Hi Naomi, I think in the case of you getting home at 5:00, and being really hungry, you probably should have just had dinner then. Maybe next time bring your lunch, AND a small snack for mid afternoon..so you don't get so hungry. I think if you had eaten the rice cakes and hummus or peanut butter earlier, you would be able to hold off hunger a bit easier.

But it is hard, to get a workable plan. It's Trial and Error. You need to find what works for YOU.
I found, for me, I have to use the Nutrition Tracker. I track everything I eat, drink, what time, what my Blood Glucose was, what I was doing, how I felt, whether I was getting exercise, or was sick, hungry, stressed or bored. Then pretty soon I found patterns to my hunger. I definitely have a mid afternoon blood sugar drop. So I know a snack then is a great boost. And I am usually not "starving" at dinner, so I can control my servings better.

But you will get this soon..it is a learning experience.
So do you play MahJong the whole time, like 5 or 6 hrs? Do you play the same people? I really know very little about the game. I guess you like it. Do you play every week?

emoticon Good Luck!

I can only tell you that I try to eat something before going out so I'm not starving and tempted to eat whatever looks edible!

Good suggestions to see a Diabetic Educator.

Hi Nomis1,

I recently went to Diabetes Education classes and they recommend eating regular meals - breakfast, lunch, dinner and 2 healthy snacks to balance out your carbs throughout the day. I find doing this keeps my blood sugar (and hunger) stable. I bring a small portable snack with me when I'm out - something like small apple, Glucerna snack bar, almonds. The DE dietician also recommended (for me) to have 45 carbs for each breakfast, lunch and dinner and 15 carbs for each snack.

Have you been to Diabetes Education classes? I highly recommend them. My insurance (Medicare and supplement) covered this. There's a wealth of information to help you understand this variable disease (each of us are different in what we react to or what meds may or may not be needed).

Hope this helps.

I always have a hard time when I come home from playing Mah Jongg.

i leave the house a little after 11 and get home close to 5:00. Today I brought a turkey sandwich and an apple for lunch.

When I got home I was really hungry (real hunger). I had 2 rice cakes with hummus. Drank some water. Still hungry. I ate some stuff I should not have.

My question - should I just have eaten dinner? Are there some snacks that would satisfy the hunger until dinner?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
