HI all
Finally made my egg white omlet, fashioning it after my sister's, that she made for me. Hers was definitely better looking and tasting than mine, but, oh well.

I'll try it again tomorrow morning. After I was done, I wondered what was missing--oh yeah, the egg yolks, it was hard for me to throw the egg yolks out. I do like those.

Taking the lion for a walk, on a leash.

I bough a chocolate bar today. 70% cocoa, dark chocolate with almond bits. There is 85% or higher, but that is too bitter for me. So 100 grams of this bar has 42 grams of carbs. 10 of the 42 are fibre, so 32 are net or digestible carbs. I ate two 10 gram squares, so 6.4 grams of net carbs.

Not so bad really. I just shouldn't eat the whole bar.

hope the car repair was minor. Lots of walking and I hope good amount of sleep while on vacation should help keep you healthy. I don't know if lack of sleep affects the blood sugar but I know that your muscles need sleep to help repair and to keep them healthy.

car repair today and to do it today, they wanted to keep the car overnight

so I walked three miles home, good weather, nice breeze, good for me

I was on vacation and ate healthy and lots of walking to help others get to their convention center at the right times,

Went to the doctor today and he is fully on board with the weight loss goal, and happy with the progress of my bs (just by number he sees on meter) he thinks we will be happy with the a1c results as I have been carb smart (i like the term rather than low car) and been running good numbers. I am still having some issues maintaining a higher number during the day, tend to drop to 3.3 or lower but, I am working on it =)

He didn't want to lower my meds at this time, said we would discuss it after a1c

I haven't had any problems with carbs, since I've stuck to low carb for the past 26 months. However I do have my suspicions that if I tried to eat mashed potatoes or something like that, then I'd be in some digestive distress just like you were.

Perhaps eating low carb is self regulating once it gets started.

fbs 127, ate a burrito yesterday. it had rice and whole wheat in it as well as steak. I usually eat low carb but felt rebellious. After eating it I didn't feel so rebellious, I had a stomach ache. So yesterday for dinner I had low carb. and this morning I had low carb. I tried something new. "basic Almond biscuit.' It called for 4 tsp baking powder, seemed a bit salty to me. Would baking powder make something salty? The good thing is that it had only 9 carb per biscuit. i also had turkey sausage and a egg. 2 hours after my bs was 141

The metabolism is what I was told from my doctors since I was a child. I was always active and healthy, just couldn't lose weight or stayed small.

Do I fully believe this? Not sure, but I know I sure compounded my own problems with my eating habits. I didn't eat in front of people, and rarely ate even after that. Further killing it myself. So when I did eat, I was always in starvation mode.

I have come to learn that in order to function with my body, I need to eat small regular meals =)

My motivation for getting healthy has always been, to be healthy. Not necessarily to lose weight. I used to go to the gym every day except sundays and never lost a thing. I did have good muscles though, I now realize, now that I am older that it was my eating habits that prevented weight loss.

So like you suggest, I am working on my muscles to waken them up, and get my body burning =)

Hi all,
I have been gone a long time. What brought me back is while on vacation at moms we had a huge scare. My mom went into a diabetic coma her BS dropped to 20. We called paramedics and they brought it back up with sugar water by IV. We did not recognize it as a diabetes problem cause mom has Parkinson's too. She had fallen on her butt at the Grand Canyon and we thought she may have jarred some wires loose literally. A few months ago she had brain surgery to have a brain stimulator put in. Paramedics let us know if shes acting like a drunk its BS. I have not tested mine in about six months so need to develop the habit again. I am kinda scared to find out I have not been taking care of myself real well. Dealing with other family members issues.

That is why I have no bananas or orange juice any more,

I even gave up my bread and I had a good number after,
dinner my B/S was #155 yah:)

I haven't been to a fast food place in over a month and,
had no more soda's doing good so far.

and my gout hasn't bothered me since then and I haven't,
went to the E.R. since then to get a shot yah.

I had the same blood sugar experience with a banana years ago. I just happened to measure my blood sugar after eating one. Yikes! No more bananas since then.

What I didn't know was that I could have a good guess at how foods would impact me if I only looked at their carbs. The nutrition of a banana show (via googling it) that 100 grams of banana has 23 grams of carbs, but 2.6 of those are fibre, so 23 - 2.6, or 20.4 grams of net or digestible carbs.

My rule of thumb today is to avoid things that are more than 6%, and bananas are 20.4%. It works for me.

I make great muffins using almond flour and sweetened with stevia. Some whipped cream sweetened with Mio work on top. I still like some treats, just low carb treats.

P.S. I just checked out orange juice, just a liquid, but it is around 10% carbs (sugar) by weight.

@ this now what about the fruits when I ate watermelon my B/S went sky high,
as well as a banana can I not have any fruit or juice anymore even orange juice makes,
it go sky high.

Add your carbs. Forget about how much sugar. Look on the box to see how many carbs you have. Normally sugarfrees have fewer carbs but not always. I count 45 carbs per meal and 20 for snacks. So look at your carbs. emoticon

Put your heart into anything you do.

A dead metabolism waking up, that is an interesting concept.

I myself am exercising again for the first time in years. I have a number of motivations for that:
- live longer by being fitter
- able to physically do more things (strength, flexibility)
- loose body fat
- build muscle

The "loose body fat" idea is related to not just burning calories while exercising, but having muscles that are more awake/alive even when not active, and hence burn more calories when dormant too. So I guess this is waking up a dead metabolism too.

I didn't really need an explanation, but one is always nice to reaffirm what I know. Since I started working out I went from 6.2 down to 5.2 consistent numbers with the occasional 3's.

I do read carbs on everything, not just the sugar. I do not go for carbs when I am hungry but usually protein and I do try to balance my carb, protein and fat for each meal.

My doctor diagnosed me as having my metabolism being 'dead' and it is just starting to come back in, which is what is making me hungry. Its kinda great =)

The 11 gram packet has 8 grams of carbs, one of those is fibre, none are sugar, but 8-1 or 7 of them will impact blood sugar, so that package is 7 of 11 digestible carbs, around 60% carbs. Yikes! I guess you need to add water or milk to make the pudding, but still.

SGASPERSON is right. All digestible carbs count and raise blood sugar, not just sugar. It took me decades to learn that because I was fixated on the word "sugar".

If you look at a nutrition label, and here is an example:

Per 30 grams they are 23.2 grams of carbs, and that 23.2 has a further breakdown of 9.6 grams of sugar and 2.1 of fibre, and other carbs in the breakdown that just aren't listed. It is actually worse than just 9.6, the real number is 23.2 grams of carbs, but don't count the 2.1 of fibre, so 23.2-2.1 or 21.1 grams of digestible carbs.

That makes them 70% digestible carbs. I avoid almost everything over 6%

Eating any kind of carbs (other than fibre) raises blood sugar. To get blood sugar back down your pancreas releases insulin to store the excess carbs away as body fat. This also locks up existing body fat. So you end up getting hungry before things settle down. You have body fat but can't access it for a few days really.

During that time you get hungry before you dip into your own fat reserves. The solution, eat more carbs. A vicious cycle. After you are away from wheat and other high carb things for a few days you can dip into your reserves, and cravings go down. You have a much better path to loose body fat if you avoid carbs, and you won't be hungry all the time either.

That is great news losing 2 lbs. awesome.

I cannot keep my B/S numbers down ugh...I am doing everything to pin point it,
and last night my number jumped to #200 ug and this morning it was #190.

Could it have been either the sugar free choc pudding cup or the redi-whip fat free,
I thought they both were sugar free ugh...any help please will be appreciated.

Lost two pounds this week! Doubled my calorie burn and exercise time goal and I am so proud of that. Gotta keep it up! My diet has been good, enjoying the healthy choices. Constantly hungry and I am battling a lot of low numbers but its nicer to battle lows than it is to fight highs.

Morning, in regard to cholesterol they say green leafy vegetables are good. I have done some reading and there seems to be cholesterol that is good for you and some that's bad. Seems that it is a moderation that is best and that your body actually make some itself. I would suggest doing some reading.
My A1c came back at 6. I and my doctor are pleased, he said I was considered pre diabetic now. so I plan to continue my low carb and exercise routine. Its great to be off medication, I have been off since December 26th 2013. ( I still remember the day that he said he would have to put me on another medication because the metformin dosage was maxed out, that was the day that I decided I would do anything to get it under control)

When I eat in restaurants, which is what I assume is your challenge, when on vacation I look at the menu ahead of time if I have Internet access.

I then make low carb selections. Virtually any meat is fine as long as it isn't in some sugar based sauce. Then there are substitutions. Like a breakfast place that serves bacon, eggs and toast. They often allow for substitutions if you ask. I ask for sliced tomatoes rather than toast.

It can work.

I'll tell you what happened to me. I'm also a type 2 diabetic. After 9 years of pills metformin alone wasn't enough to keep my blood sugar under control, even at the maximum dose. Then my doctor added januvia to that. Very close to insulin.

I changed my diet to loose weight, but found out that it also managed my blood sugar. I was a few days into a low carb diet when I forgot my diabetes meds. Surprisingly my blood sugar at the end of the day was better than it had been in a long time, and with no pills.

My experiment continued, and it's now over two years of no pills and three A1c tests that were OK in that time.

So how low on the carbs? I eat 20 to 50 grams a day. Yes there are certain things I just don't ever eat anymore. I eat all types of meat, but I don't worry about it bring lean, I'm trying to cut carbs not calories.

I'm a full fledged type 2 diabetic. Metformin and diet aren't enough to keep my BS under control. I need to add exercise which is very very hard for me to do. I am able to eat right most of the time. I limit carbs and sugar and concentrate on eating vegetables and lean protein. I try to eliminate any white foods from my diet such as pasta rice, white flour, etc. I think part of my BS problem is hereditary which I can do nothing about. Keep eating right and taking your medicine and hopefully you'll remain pre-diabetic.

Sounds like you're doing positive things to get yourself healthy. You may have some obstacles but it's only an obstacle, not a brick wall or something that you can't overcome with perseverance.

I have friends who have tried acupuncture who found it helped for their osteoarthritis but my issues are that I have paralyzing in certain areas of my body that are causing the issues. There is no cure and there are not many specialists that are available. One of my Drs. has offered to send me to Mayo but I do not have the funds for that. Just Keeping on Keeping on is my motto for now.

I saw my primary yesterday and he is no longer talking about my weight since I am on mostly liquids. I have lost weigh which might have been enough to bring the pre-diabetes into line. I was only .5 from the normal range. He wanted me to try Reglin for the Gastro but with so many side effects I am just too afraid to.

your swallowing disorder reminded me of something. I finally remembered. Years ago my wife had swallowing problems. The food just got stuck. The nerves to send the signals to swallow just didn't work right. They were going to do surgery. By chance she went for an acupuncture treatment. The person treating her for other things said she didn't like the way her upper back looked.

After the treatment her swallowing got better for a few days. We didn't initially connect it with the treatment.

After a few weeks like this she connected the fact that for a few days after her weekly acupuncture treatment her swallowing was better. So after about 5 weeks she asked the acupuncturist what she would do if she had swallowing problems and the acupuncturist said she would treat the same part of the upper back that she was treating.

In the end the effect of the treatment lasted longer each time, eventually being cured with no further treatment.

I am on almost complete liquids now due to the swallowing disorder and Gastroparesis. I did try some smashed food yesterday but it produced a lot of pain so I will add more liquid and puree if I try it again. I am not having any weakness or dizziness so I must be getting enough of everything.

I manage my blood sugar by diet. I'm a type 2 diabetic. I've had 3 decent A1c tests in the last two years, so it works for me.

My rule of thumb is not to buy or eat anything that is more than 6% carbs by weight. By that rule cheese is a fine snack. Imitation crab is 15% carbs better than potato chips ,but ...

Seafood sauce is about 30% carbs.

Consider some nuts as a snack, most are in the 5 to 7 percent range except macadamia nuts which are way up there at about 30 percent.

Today my FBS was at 166. Not great but it has been running higher lately. My doctor suggested that I eat protein before going to bed and that has helped. He suggested cheese sticks or the imitation crab that comes in sticks. They are pretty good too. I wasn't sure I would like them but I dip them in a little mix of catsup and horse radish.

I am actually pre-diabetes so all I have to do at this time is take my metflorin (sp?) and eat correctly. Hopefully this will stave off the full diabetes.

So far I am doing great. Hopefully that will continue. I helps that my husband is also pre-diabetic and so I do not have to cook two meals. He is very easy to please.

Like KATTREE I too manage my type 2 diabetes with low carb choices and no medication. It took a while to find a range of things to eat. I know from experience that 90 grams of carbs in a day is more than I can handle without medication.

My breakfasts tend to be from among these items:
Bacon and eggs
Cheese
Sausage
Homemade pancakes made from protein powder and low carb syrup

So went to my Diabetes Team meeting yesterday and well they want me to keep doing what I am doing but record my insulin dosages also. And that if my BS is 5,0 or so before bed to have a snack before bed. My weight was 149 back in April but my weight was 141 yesterday wow eh? Proud of myself gotta keep up the good work.

The name sounds familiar, but not familiar with the book at all or his methods. The ONLY book I recommend about diabetes is Dr Berstein's The Diabetes Solution. It changed my life. emoticon

Well it's 10 days later and I've exercised almost every day for 20 to 30 minutes. My shins are in shape now, not sore, and plenty more skips of the rope too.

I'm already fitter.

I haven't visited your page in a very long time. I just came through a tough time keeping my BS low. Today it is back down to 120. It was up to 156 one day.
Time to go out for a run!

I am going to almost all liquids and see if that will help my GP issues. I have a back procedure tomorrow and am hoping I will be able to walk more steps again soon.

I did an old karate pattern 4 times in a row. In between each pattern I skipped rope, just 10 little jumps.

My shins hurt a tiny bit this evening. I used to do the pattern at a higher intensity and 100 jumps between each repetition, but this old dog has learned what that will do to his shins if he starts from no exercise to that.

Trying to do liquids today as my tummy is not doing its job. Trying to get a few more steps in to help with the BS so that I don't get in trouble.

I finally have time to go exercise for the first time in years. I've gone for daily (almost) walks, gone swimming about once a week, and gotten some movement from frequent construction activity.

But today will be a little more intense. Off to the YMCA now, it is only about 5 minutes away.

For the last two years I've used just diet to control my blood sugar, but I know that exercise burns off a little blood sugar, and fitter muscles are less insulin resistant.

We did have a nice emoticon last night and the temps are cooler this morning but the humidity is high so walking will be difficult with the COPD and OA. I am not able to walk as much this week due to back problems but hope that will ease with a visit to the pain specialist next week.

emoticon no rain though it has been forecast for several days...therefore DH on ride with disabled Vet and I am hanging the laundry on the clothesline Currently 2 loads on the line and another in the washer . So far getting by with a fan in the livingroom and the ceiling fan at night in the bedroom. emoticon
