JAMES, this morning when I woke up at 3am, I checked my FBS and it was 118, then when I got up at 4:55am for work, I checked it again and it was 130. I read about the Dawn phenomenon, my question is should I be eating something before bed??

JAROCKS ,
your blood sugar is way up from yesterday morning. What did you eat yesterday? It is all about carbohydrates of any kind. I look at foods from the view of what fraction, or percentage of their weight is carbs. Here are some of the higher things:

- sugar (100%)
- cost (65%)
- bread (50%)
- pasta (28%)
- banana (20%)
- potatoes (15%)
- peas (11%)

I avoid going above 6% except for a few small things. I bet when you look into it, you ate some of those things yesterday, or if not, then what did you eat?

Thank you James for the info,I have seen it before, but it is nice for a refresher course, I'm still doing the Medifast diet for now, which is a balanced diet for me.

4ROSEMARY,
oh for me 90 grams of carbs a day is too much, I know from experience. I can handle about 40 to 50 a day max, but I aim for 30, that way if I go over, I go into the 40 to 50 range, not the 70 to 80 range.

I choose to not take diabetes medication, but then need to eat very low carb.

Every type-2 diabetic has a personal carb tolerance before their blood sugar is out of control. So what one person can tolerate, another can't. We each need find what our limits are.

James,

Interesting information. I think I read something similar, about the 45 to 60 grams of carbs at a meal, and I thought that was way too much for me, or it would make my blood sugar levels too high. For breakfast, I try to keep my carbs to under 20 grams. For lunch and dinner, I keep them under 30 per meal if possible. I sometimes have a snack. So, a good day I keep the total carbs for the day under 100. I don't manage it every day, but that's my goal.
emoticon
Maybe some day I could lower even more than that, but then some feeling of deprivation sets in. I cook a lot, so I'm constantly trying recipes with swaps that lower the carb amounts, or finding products that have lower carbs. For example, I found a really thin rye bread that has only 11 grams of carbs per slice. So I can still have one piece of toast for breakfast for my carb for that meal (with a spinach omelet, for example), and be within my goal for that meal.

Thanks again for your input.

4ROSEMARY,

First of all the government diabetes associations do recognize that carbohydrates raise blood sugar, and need to be reduced, like this page:
www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/fo
od
/what-can-i-eat/understanding-carbohR>ydrates/carbohydrate-counting.html

On that page it says:
"A place to start is at about 45-60 grams of carbohydrate at a meal."

So there is clear recognition that carbs are not good for diabetics and need to be carefully watched. But what they are proposing is about a third of North American adult consumption. Yes that is low compared to average.

But when you recognize this is the issue, why not yet lower?

in my opinion there are a couple of reasons that official diabetes plans have not gone lower. One is simple rebellion. Folks will say that is too hard. Give me medication so I don't have to eat so radically. I want to eat like other folks and "fit in".

James, I agree that low carb is the best way to go. I was really surprised when I started reading some diabetes "diet" plans that allowed so many carbs in a meal! I thought they allowed way too many. I'm try to keep it to one carb serving per meal.

I'm also finding that some carbs are just no good for me, period. Like white rice...even a tiny amount really makes my glucose spike. Brown rice does too. I can eat a serving of potatoes and not have as high of a spike as I do with a serving of rice. So many diets think of rice as healthier than potatoes, it isn't for me. I think different carbs impact us differently.

So, live and learn. I guess the real learning is tracking the numbers and logging. You seem to be doing great and found what works for you. That's awesome!

Thanks again for your input.

4ROSEMARY,

eating high carb for a long time does this ... It keeps you producing insulin, which lowers high blood sugar caused by the carbs, insulin gets carbs out of the blood and into cells, both muscle and fat.

Eventually, and typically, with too much excess body fat, the body doesn't want to store any more carbs into body fat, it stops listening to the insulin, and then blood sugar starts to go up. Diabetes medications then make that insulin more effective. Basically storage into body fat more effective.

My weight loss plan is of course to cut calories, but in particular mostly cut calories from things that have lots of carbs.

My thoughts on "balanced" meals ... fine for "healthy" people who don't have excess body fat or blood sugar problems. I eat a very "unbalanced" diet because I'm not "healthy", I have type-2 diabetes. So my diet is out of balance, very low carb.

James

Thank you for the info and the links, James. I'll definitely check them out.

I've definitely been cutting back on the carbs, and try to eat protein any time I do eat a carb (never eat a carb alone). That seems to help balance things out. But, that morning number seems to be hard to improve upon. We'll see if it improves as I continue on the weight loss plan.

Thanks again for your help.

4ROSEMARY,
a rise in morning fasting levels is "normal" for type-2 diabetics. It is related to hormone level surges that occur a couple of hours before waking, like around 4 or 5 am.

Then as the day goes on blood sugar comes down, and indeed just normal activity, moving, etc. helps burn off some blood sugar.

I don't know how to bring your morning levels down, not in particular. This American Diabetes Association page has some suggestions:

www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabete
s/
treatment-and-care/blood-glucose-conR>trol/dawn-phenomenon.html

I myself keep my levels down in general by cutting carbohydrates way way down. I make "fair" comparisons of foods by considering how many grams of carb a 100 gram portion of them has. That way I can compare say carrots with zucchini and figure out percentage wise which one has more carbs.

Hi everyone,
I wasn't sure if this was the correct forum to post in or not. Sorry if it isn't. I was diagnosed with diabetes last summer, so I'm somewhat new to this.

I just got some lab results back. I think I'm doing okay. I'll see the doctor next week for his opinion. My FBS is 125. My A1C is 6.3. That's close to what my numbers were three months ago. My doctor just says to get my A1C as close to 6 as I can, but anything under 7, he doesn't worry. He doesn't seem too concerned about the FBS. I wish I could get that number lower, but that has always been my problem. My sugars go down after breakfast. FYI...I'm on metformin 1,000 mg twice a day. I try to eat low or reduced carb meals, especially at breakfast. Later in the day I've found I can handle a bit more. But even if my after dinner blood levels are fine, I still have levels in the morning higher than I would like. Don't know how to bring them down, or if they are okay even if they are in the 120s.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I wish everyone the best with their goals!

BOBBIESOCKS-46,

maybe its my hair (or an older picture of me). I'm not a lot younger, I'm 58.

Your analysis of carbs in vegetables right. Quite a few vegetables provide calories mostly from carbs. Take a look at 100 grams of broccoli:
Calories (35)
Protein (2.4 g)
Fat (0.4 g)
Total carbs (7.2 g)
.... fibre (3.3 g)

So net carbs, after subtracting fibre are 3.9 grams. So although virtually all of the calories in broccoli come from carbs, making it "high carb" in that sense, only 3.9% of the weight of broccoli is net carbs, making it quite low carb. You have to eat a lot of broccoli to eat any significant amount of carbs.

Your welcome JANICEONE1

-JAMES-

I think you are a lot younger and being a male you can and should eat more.

The whole concept of the ketogenic diet is that you're having very low carbs, moderate protein, higher fat.

My numbers are averaging on the SP tracker per day:
Carbs - 15%
Proteines - 25%
Fats - 55%

I have a Lot To LEARN but, I do know that protein triggers the fat burning hormones and fat is neutral, vegetables are almost all carbohydrate they're very high in fiber and they're very low in sugar and they don't turn into fat.

I have a Fatty Liver and I'm older. It takes up to 3 years to reverse a Fatty Liver, so that's my focus. How to Reverse a Fatty Liver;

Thanks BOBBIESOCKS-46, it seems to be working for now, with my work schedule, I know I can't do this diet forever, & I will figure it out, my biggest problem is at night when I'm watching TV. I like to munch but since I've been on Medifast I'm not as hungry when I watch TV so I don't eat anything.I just have to train myself to not eat so much junk

BOBBIESOCKS-46,
great number targets. I'm Keto myself, well high end of Keto, low end of low carb.

I presume you are eating something like 50 to 60 grams of protein a day... which really is a daily minimum, not a maximum.

I don't plan much these day, I eat certain things, don't eat others, and eat a few things in small quantity (like the odd bit of very dark chocolate, 85% cocoa). That could be a gateway drug for some, but I keep it in check. If I do track I find I'm eating about 70 to 80 grams of protein a day, and I'm very happy with that, it is above the daily minimum, but not so high that it will cause other problems. Like everything in life, you can have too much of a good thing.

Hi JANICEONE1

Medifast diet is one I have never done. My weight has been yoyoing ever since I joined SP and like so many others I have been on many different diets.

I finally realized that I'm running out of time. I finally admitted to myself that I'm not as healthy as I thought I was. So, I sure hope I'm getting it right this time because this is my Lifestyle until I die and that's just what it is Life or Death for me.

I wish you the best with whatever diet you decide to do after you are done with Medifast.
