NPA4LOSS,
I was thinking that acupuncture is probably related to nerves and self healing, and maybe there is a chance it could help with paralysis.

I have friends who have tried acupuncture who found it helped for their osteoarthritis but my issues are that I have paralyzing in certain areas of my body that are causing the issues. There is no cure and there are not many specialists that are available. One of my Drs. has offered to send me to Mayo but I do not have the funds for that. Just Keeping on Keeping on is my motto for now.

I saw my primary yesterday and he is no longer talking about my weight since I am on mostly liquids. I have lost weigh which might have been enough to bring the pre-diabetes into line. I was only .5 from the normal range. He wanted me to try Reglin for the Gastro but with so many side effects I am just too afraid to.

I have dysfunctional vocal cords and sometimes they become paralyzed. The left side is that way now. I am doing speech exercises to hopefully get them to moving again.

NPA4LOSS,
your swallowing disorder reminded me of something. I finally remembered. Years ago my wife had swallowing problems. The food just got stuck. The nerves to send the signals to swallow just didn't work right. They were going to do surgery. By chance she went for an acupuncture treatment. The person treating her for other things said she didn't like the way her upper back looked.

After the treatment her swallowing got better for a few days. We didn't initially connect it with the treatment.

After a few weeks like this she connected the fact that for a few days after her weekly acupuncture treatment her swallowing was better. So after about 5 weeks she asked the acupuncturist what she would do if she had swallowing problems and the acupuncturist said she would treat the same part of the upper back that she was treating.

In the end the effect of the treatment lasted longer each time, eventually being cured with no further treatment.

I am on almost complete liquids now due to the swallowing disorder and Gastroparesis. I did try some smashed food yesterday but it produced a lot of pain so I will add more liquid and puree if I try it again. I am not having any weakness or dizziness so I must be getting enough of everything.

CHERIJ16,
I manage my blood sugar by diet. I'm a type 2 diabetic. I've had 3 decent A1c tests in the last two years, so it works for me.

My rule of thumb is not to buy or eat anything that is more than 6% carbs by weight. By that rule cheese is a fine snack. Imitation crab is 15% carbs better than potato chips ,but ...

Seafood sauce is about 30% carbs.

Consider some nuts as a snack, most are in the 5 to 7 percent range except macadamia nuts which are way up there at about 30 percent.

Today my FBS was at 166. Not great but it has been running higher lately. My doctor suggested that I eat protein before going to bed and that has helped. He suggested cheese sticks or the imitation crab that comes in sticks. They are pretty good too. I wasn't sure I would like them but I dip them in a little mix of catsup and horse radish.

I am actually pre-diabetes so all I have to do at this time is take my metflorin (sp?) and eat correctly. Hopefully this will stave off the full diabetes.

So far I am doing great. Hopefully that will continue. I helps that my husband is also pre-diabetic and so I do not have to cook two meals. He is very easy to please.

Like KATTREE I too manage my type 2 diabetes with low carb choices and no medication. It took a while to find a range of things to eat. I know from experience that 90 grams of carbs in a day is more than I can handle without medication.

My breakfasts tend to be from among these items:
Bacon and eggs
Cheese
Sausage
Homemade pancakes made from protein powder and low carb syrup

BABYGIRL737,
I have bacon and eggs for breakfast, maybe sausages. No cereal, so I can't recommend any. I used to eat fibre one, but not anymore. Probably a lower carb load than Cheerios.

I'm already fitter.

I did an old karate pattern 4 times in a row. In between each pattern I skipped rope, just 10 little jumps.

My shins hurt a tiny bit this evening. I used to do the pattern at a higher intensity and 100 jumps between each repetition, but this old dog has learned what that will do to his shins if he starts from no exercise to that.

I finally have time to go exercise for the first time in years. I've gone for daily (almost) walks, gone swimming about once a week, and gotten some movement from frequent construction activity.

But today will be a little more intense. Off to the YMCA now, it is only about 5 minutes away.

For the last two years I've used just diet to control my blood sugar, but I know that exercise burns off a little blood sugar, and fitter muscles are less insulin resistant.

We did have a nice emoticon last night and the temps are cooler this morning but the humidity is high so walking will be difficult with the COPD and OA. I am not able to walk as much this week due to back problems but hope that will ease with a visit to the pain specialist next week.
Wishing you all a great weekend.

I took vitamin B to help fight fatigue but then I read that it doesn't really help that much unless you take huge doses. The article said it was better to get it through your food. That would definitely be a problem if food choices are limited. emoticon

NPA4LOSS,
your problem, Gastroparesis got me thinking. I wasn't sure about what at first. Then it came together.

When I was on diabetes meds I was low on vitamin B. My doctor never diagnosed it as such, but I know other diabetics who are given extra vitamin B in addition to their meds, a preventative action.

Anyway, my symptoms were a numbness and tingling in my arms, which I incorrectly interpreted as too much typing (I was a software programmer). When I started loosing skin pigment, and wouldn't tan in spots an Internet search pointed to vitamin B deficiency for both problems. I started taking over the counter vitamin B supplements and there was an improvement in a few weeks.

Vitamin B complex supplements, is worth a try. Nerve issues with your stomach... Maybe.

NPA4LOSS,
it looks like the diet for Gastroparesis is a very soft diet. I can see that meat might be a problem. However I think you can get your protein requirements by eating protein powder. Whey protein is the best for us, a better balance of amino acids compared to soy protein.

So getting your 60 to 100 grams of daily protein this way should easy, like drinking a chocolate smoothie. I buy flavoured whey protein in tubs at COSTCO. Getting enough fat should be OK for you too, like olive oil, or butter, etc.

You biggest problem is getting nutrients, especially if you have trouble digesting vegetables.

Gastroparesis can also be related to diabetes. A nerve issue? Low carb is managing my type 2 diabetes drug free, I wonder what it can do for Gastroparesis.

This is permanent with the hope that it will not get worse. My stomach is mildly paralyzed and will not grind food up the way other peoples will. I have mild GP. There are many who live with feeding tubes. Most lose extreme amounts of weight. Some of us gain. Some pass away due to the body starving itself. Many Diabetics have GP many undiagnosed.

That list is sure restrictive. normally we try to avoid potatoes with diabetes but with no on a lot of the variegates I would probable go with the sweet potatoes. Is this a temporary change or do you have to do this the rest of your life?

The list of do not eat with Gastroparesis is very large. No fresh fruits or veggies. Ground lean meats only. No whole grains. My only permitted veggies are potatoes, beets, sweet potatoes, mushrooms. No seeds or skins. The recommendation from my Dr. Is 1 solid meal a day and the rest pureed or liquid consistency. Eat something 6 x daily but no more than 4-6 oz.

Yes, I am trying to loose weight but most of the Gastroparesis foods are carbs and processed foods. I am losing very slowly as I try to come out of the starvation mode that I have been in for years, I checked out the Ensure high protein today but it has some ingredients that I have had issues with so I will keep with my regular Ensure shake and keep searching for more protein foods that my body will digest. emoticon

NPA4LOSS,
are you trying to loose weight? I can whole hearted lay recommend cutting carbs, not protein or fat. The insulin response to carbs is involved with keeping your blood sugar in control by storing carbs away as body fat. In that mode it is very hard to loose body fat.

Finally back home for at least a month or two depending on how other things go (i.e. if my Bells cures itself and I can talk and get back to work!). My diet at my mom's house stank horribly and I'm working on getting back on track. I came home with two new additions to my house - kittens!! Totally unexpected but what a joy to have!

I have switched to cycling instead of walking lately, I want to get used to the bike before we take the RV out the next time. It has reduced the steps I take because of the cycling. I found that there is a cycling measurement for calories burned so I have been using the lowest rate. not sure if its accurate but the muscles say I am working it out. emoticon

I am using Ensure now and it seems to be doing OK. I add a small amount of fat free frozen yogurt to bring the calories up but am not where the dietician wants me on the protein. I did get in my workouts this week but am a little behind on my step goals. I read an article this morning that said that 6000 steps per day seems to be where those of us with OA see a decrease in pain. One must build up to it but I have noticed some reduction although I still need to drop my numbers once or twice a week to rest the joints. emoticon

I tried Shakeology and it has whey protein. I had a bad allergic reaction but am not sure if that was the problem or not but without knowing it could be a costly experiment. I am lactose intolerant and milk is an issue for me. I am reading so many labels but all seem to have something that disagrees with me. It is so hard to find answers when there are so many unknowns.

NPA4LOSS,

If you are trying to get enough protein and have some digestive problems I suggest whey protein. This is from cows milk and the digested protein breaks up I to amino acids. The ratio of the amount of the different amino acids to what we need is pretty good. Cows are mammals, we are mammals, so it makes sense.

Soy protein breaks down into a different ratio of amino acids, not as optimal. Anyway, whey protein, say in a chocolate smoothie, could provide you with more pure and easier digested protein. Easier than meat I'd guess.

Thank you for the information. The hardest part is dealing with the Gastroparesis which does not allow me to eat any fresh fruits or veggies and at my stage only 3 fruits and 5 different veggies are allowed. Protein is very hard for me to digest at times so I am trying to figure out what is the best for me. I ran off some information to help make better food choices with the foods I am allowed. I will figure the information you gave me into my equation. I am comfortable at about 800 calories a day but it has put me in Starvation mode for so long that I am having to increase to 1000-1200 calories that they are hoping to trip my metabolism. emoticon

NPA4LOSS,
About 6 years ago m doctor arranged for me to consult with a dietician. It didn't work out.

Two years ago I went on a low carb diet to loose weight, and as a very nice side effect it normalized my blood sugar without medication.

Here is my rough plan:
60 to 90 grams of protein a day (4 calories per gram)
40 to 60 grams of carbs a day (4 calories per gram)
Fat (9 calories per gram)

I eat enough fat. The major impact on blood sugar is from carbs. The North American average for adults is 330 grams a day. So you see I'm at about 1/8 of that. The diabetes associations suggest about 100 grams of carbs a day, well below 330, but not low enough to manage my blood sugar medication free.

At this stage I'm not weighing anything. I used to, and I tracked calories, grams of carbs, protein and fat in everything. My new "rule" is to only eat things that are 6% carbs or less by weight. So do your research on vegetable and fruit nutrition. Potatoes, pasta and rice are off the list. Blackberries, strawberries and raspberries make the list, but just barely.

I visited another dietician today who said again I was doing everything right. emoticon I wish my Dr. understood that. I am going to try to increase my protein a little more and cabs a little less. She did suggest I try some vegetables that are not on the GP approved list so I am a little wary about that. emoticon Well I will just keep searching for answers. She is going to let me come by and weigh at the clinic so that I can have a reliable scale. emoticon

My Gastroparesis is in Flare today and will make eating difficult. I accomplished quite a bit yesterday despite a slow start. I am on target to reach my new step goal for the week. emoticon My body has not felt the symptoms of constantly changing blood sugar levels and just one episode of shaking in the last few days. emoticon

A lot has changed since May 18th..our first 70F day. Temps continue to vacillate. This morning it was 50F and appears this is where they will stay today.
rainy morning here...last night the air was so saturated looked like fog I thought we were having hail because the rain came down and was so heavy the raindrops looked like they were half dollar-size raindrops
Our Meteorologist Paul Douglas says this has been the wettest (Jan-May) on record for 144 years!
It is a great day to prep meals to serve when the sun and heat return.
It is a great day to make lists of things to be done.
It is a great day to organize an area that needs it.
It is a great day to read a book.
A wonderful day to visit the Conservatory or other indoor gardens,,,even garden centers!
Or even watching a video of gardens around the world.

I'm finally back home today - I have been gone for so long! My cat has been letting me know exactly how long and how much she has missed me. Tomorrow is going to be a long day of phone calls and making doctor appointments, something I've been putting off.

I am doing fairly well. My percentages were on target today. I only made it to 800 calories today but will try for 1000again tomorrow. My Gastro paresis nausea has returned after 2 months gone but I knew it would come back. I am just glad for the few weeks it was gone. I am walking 5000+ steps most days but am not getting the ST in as I should. Have a good day and weekend!

I don't punish myself for gaining weight, I do reward my self for loosing. For every 5 pounds I bought myself something. Doesn't have to be big, socks, something pretty, just something. It helps to reinforce that your worth it and what you are doing is for you.

PHATCRISSY,
Official weigh-in should be once a week to avoid fluctuations.

You get $1 for each pound lost in the week
You pay $2 for each pound gained
You are even if you loose nothing

By the way, eating low carb is one of the most effective diets for loosing weight. With fewer carbs there is less of an insulin response. Insulin is a hormone that is involved with fat storage, and it also locks up existing body fat.

So I suggest you avoid all carb high things like rice, potatoes, and pasta. If you are already doing that, then rate your foods by carb percentage and choose lower carb ones. For example if you google "nutrition corn" you will find that 100 grams has 74 grams of carbs, 7 of those are fibre, so 67 net or digestible carbs. On the other hand broccoli rates 4% net carbs. So choose broccoli and avoid corn.

So my husband said to the other night that he wants to help me any way he can to loose the weight i have been working on. I came to him after much thought and said how bout i get a $1 for every pound I loose. he asked how it would work,

My thoughts on how this work, to start on June 1, measure my food, water and unsweet tea, exercise and walking daily ( he will make me). step on the scale on monday morning after awaking up. track weights. at end of month i get $$ for each pound lost.

?? Here is were we need suggstions. If i gain weight what should be the consiquence? my husband says tht if i can wait during a week i should double the exercise for the next week,

May I have some thoughts and suggestions please

Broken toes hurt so bad! I hope that they are feeling better! Yesterday my mom's cat Roy brought in another live chipmunk. We got him in one bathroom and it trapped in another bathroom and my mother and I were in there with boxes and lids to catch it. I caught it, took it outside to release it and the dang thing jumped on my ankle and ran around it a couple of times before taking off... I screamed like a little girl and my mom hit the ground laughing....
