You can get okra frozen, fresh or pickled. It looks like pepper. I have only tried the pickle okra it has dropped my BC in half.
If you look up the benefits of okra. It explains it. Good information

Went to Dr. this morning for my A1C checkup. A1C was 6.1 and in the last 3 months I lost 11 lbs. My Dr. was very pleased and so was I. Now have to keep up the momentum.

Best wishes on your A1c check. For myself, after changing my diet to low carb, I've had three good A1c tests in the last 30 months. Frankly, if I weren't a diabetic I'd have far less motivation to eat healthy.

For those who don't know I only but/eat things that are 6% net carbs by weight or less. It sounds awful, but taking drugs all the time used to be awful too.

Bye,
Good for you! Even tuna in oil is good in my books, but it depends on what you like the taste of.

Just no carbs, no cereal, or else ....

Well, I'm a diabetic and I've fallen off the wagon.

So, to brush myself off and get back on the wagon and perhaps into the saddle again, I went to the grocery store and bought more protein and less carbs. Two items--tuna in water and celery.

Lunch today will be tuna salad, I have the rest of the ingredients. Also, I'm going to a friend's house who has kids and I love to have a bowl of the sugary cereal which I don't keep at home. Oh well, not today. I also feel comfortable using their mayo.

Back on the wagon.

I had 15, count 'em black jelly beans on Halloween. Turns out each one was 10 grams of sugar. So 150 grams in one go, I'm all topped up. Better tomorrow. I know my daily target is 30 grams, so those 15 guys were my 5 day load.

No wonder.

Had my 3 month check up with the dr today. A1C was still at 6.9, but sugars have been high for a high. I know it is because of stress and eating all the wrong things. She was thinking of trying me on another drug along with the 2 I am already, but I said no. For one, I cannot afford another medication and 2, it would be a lot cheaper to treat it with diet and exercise. Also my kidney functions are in the normal range. I plan on starting an exercise class next Monday and it is 3x week. It is really close to where I live and it is $2 a session. Close enough to FREE for me!! I know I can do better at the eating, it is just setting my mind to it!! So I need to be accountable for myself. I have to 2 better in the next 3 months.

That's OK i understand. I was just wondering cause im thinking of going on novalog to see if there's a difference between that and apidra you know? If that doesn't work i might suggest to my diabetes team about going on a pump if they think it's a good idea.

BYEPOUNDS,
What is your typical daily net carb consumption? I just wondered what you meant by "watching"?

BABYGIRL737,
I'm not ignoring your posts on Apidra and Novalog, I've just got no experience or opinion on that.

Off for my morning workout. Karate patterns, push-ups, sit-ups, a bit of swimming.

I like it, and I know it tones and builds, or maintains muscle mass, and muscle mass both burns calories and keeps my blood sugar under better control.

But I know what has helped me the most in loosing my body fat and getting my blood sugar under control and that is, to eat 30 to 50 grams of net carbs a day. The lower I can get the better.

Clara did fine! She's stlll acclimating to the professors and has her opinions about them, but as I told her, it's ok to have your opinions, but ultimately if you want to pass, you have to do it their way!

KAT: No idea why the research would be coming out of India, but that's interesting.

Tuesday – Another brisk walk this morning. Supposed to warm up a little this weekend. Hope so.

Had to get yet another pedometer. The grip on mine broke so it fell off somewhere. Guess I’m rough on pedometers!

Hope it’s a good Tuesday everyone!

Didn’t realize that my post AGAIN didn’t get posted here yesterday.

Yesterday was Clara’s first day back @ school. She is much better. Spend the weekend doing catch up as we’ll be going the next 2 weekends in IL (endocrinology appointments this Sat., and next – then will visit w/the parents

Morning, Its a day off for me after being on call. I went for a walk and read a couple of diabetic alerts that I get. Interesting to note they have been doing research about Vitamin D and Pre diabetes. Supplements do actually help prevent. Also there was an article about inflammation retarding the processing of glucose in the cell. The last article was about amino acid supplement helping healing in diabetes.( such as foot ulcers) A lot of the research seems to be coming from India, any one know why?

Monday – again cool, but I’ll take it! 52 F right now, on it’s way up to 55 F. Doubtful, as it’s cloudy, but no precipitation. Did yard work today, then DH and I went out to eat. Nice treat. It felt good to just relax.

Onto the busy week.

Going to IL this weekend for my endocrine check up and will visit my parents, then have a Dr. visit the following Saturday and will again visit my parents. So . . . lots to stack up during the week that would normally be done on Saturday! But prioritize, prioritize, prioritize!

Friday – cool start to the day again. But out the door early for a walk. Got walking fast, that’s for sure!

Today is going to be a “catch up” day. Glad it’s Friday!

Jason has to have the rims on his tires ground and the tires re-fitted. He’s been losing air in 2 of his tires. The tires themselves are all right. So, hoping that’ s the answer to the problem.

Sweetisha: I am glad to hear that your DD is feeling better. It takes awhile for the body to heal itself, but it does. Given the proper food/nutrition/exercise/rest, it happens!

I actually don't mind getting up @ 4 am, usually. It's all the routine you get used to.

Hope you have a good Thursday! HUGS

A somber Thursday today as we remember 9-11. Let us never forget all those who have made our freedoms possible and who gave their lives.

Clara is still struggling with her infection, but I think she’s feeling much better today. This is so hard for her as she’s never been ill.

Right now it is 47 degrees! No frost but it can’t be far behind! Fairbanks, Alaska is warmer than we are! OH NO!

CrazyD ialso am awake round 4 am as my DD has to travel at least 1 1/2 hours to her work.. and i get her started as i give her the same diet as me but she has not lost as much weight .. i think as she was on soya milk most of her life it has disrupted her body alot.. as i heard that soya milk is not digested properly in our bodies so there is a fight going on and i'm trying to help her body to clean now.. It's taking longer. but she doesnt burp so much anymore and the bloating is nearly none... and she feels alot happier aswell..But the little she lost is a plus for her....
Glad your DH is happy with he's new job.. thats great
Have a lovely day

emoticon James yeah it makes you feel alive again..
I eliminated trans fat like sunflower oil and halvarine etc 3 months ago.. but i always used olive oil.. I just learned recently that olive oxidises with heat so add it last or in salads??

so glad i can learn and it stays.. no more forgetting.... rechechecking... is that from the high fat or from the extra B12 shot i get??..
Well early start today..
have a good day

SWEETISHA1,
That is great, I'm happy for you.

Yes cholesterol inside the body seems to be more influenced by dietary carbs than by dietary fats. Of course there are bad fats too, like trans fats, but olive oil is a good fat.

So much to learn. So much to experience.

James

SWEETISHA: Yes, DH is doing very well with the new job. It was difficult waiting to find a job, but he did it. We have had to re-adjust our schedule a little (he leaves @ 5 am so up @ 4 am -- not too bad as I was used to getting up @ 5 am anyway.) He likes the job and they're pleased with his work, so that's the most important!

I send my best wishes for your daughter in her job search. I hope life is good for both of you!

So proud of your changes and better health! Awesome.

Hello i gonna post here as i dont get messages anymore but wanted to give some good news
Got my bs results today after being on a LCHF diet for a MONTH FULLY AND HALF A HALF BEFOR THAT MONTH..
My doctor and the diabetes nurse both were excited as my HbA1c is in the normal, normal range and my IR insulin resistance has jumped 2 sets down and my cholesterol hasnot got worse is very normal as always..So didnot go up through eating fats!!!
I use full fat milk, yogurt, butter, cream, clotted cream, fat on meat, cheese and lots of greek/turkish cheeses
I'm happy bunny today.. I feel good aswell my body tells me its happy..
I stopped using caffein free products 3 years ago that was the beginning of research.. then a year and half ago stopped sweeteners changed to stevia... then month and a half ago started high fat, low carb way of eating..I didnot fancy a induction from any specific diet just didnot want a shock at all, so started with broth and iodine and progressed from there... I eat honey now with scrambled egg for breakfast,(love that i can eat honey again) not everyday of course.... most of my smoothies & juices with greens have a banana and berries, nuts and chia seeds...so that hasnot hindered my bs much!! amazing...
I freeze banana and put it in blender with buttermilk or full cream and voila banana ice cream treat...
The only problem if it can be called a problem is how to cook in oil as apparently the olive oil must not be heated as it oxidises then and can cause problems inside the body with oxidation.. so have been using real butter but it burns quick, and have to keep adding, same with ghee it disapears quickly, fat from pork but i can only get that from smoked pork so has a defenite flavour, (they dont sell lard here in holland).. coconut oil which burns quick aswell and has a coconut flavour which is not so nice with some meals... i cook anyway but still looking for an alternative thats healthy...and will be easy on a budget...
I really am still learning everyday and am thankful that i still can.. my memory is much better these few months... my foot is on the mend, and the operation on my jaw is'nt paining me anymore...
I am surprised at this result in such a short time, i had been going back for a monthly check as my bs was getting worse, i stopped the extra med glycliazide a month ago and my nurse told me that that was good seeing how my bs has gone down.. today she lowered my metformine so now i'm on 3 a day...plus she wants to see me in a months time to see if we can reduce it again.. they are so surprised at how fast the change went..
I have lost 10 kilo's in 1 and a half months time.. and i'm still losing each day...
I researched this way of eating for a couple of years butwas still sceptic and when my foot broke i just decided to start by cooking bones and fat with a little meat for a couple of days to get the broth and from there each week a little extra and added the supplements for to help healing the inside of my body.. with minerals and vitamins that are not easily got in a bad digestion...... I'm still Insulin resistant so thats what i'm gonna work on now, but my HbA1c is good...What has surprised me the most is that i dont have cravings or even hungry at all and go from 6pm to 9am without feeling any type of hunger but i may try to eat something to get my IR in control..
have a good day

I'm glad you guys agree about the eggs. I eat quite a few.

I've got to look into oxidation and foods. In my simple mind it is oxygen that interacts with metals to rust them, and internal oxidation is bad for humans too. It is like rusting on the inside.

Kattree I agree with your assessment of cholesterol. I eat 3 - 4 times the recommended amount of dietary cholesterol and my most recent test last week was 92 LDL, 48 HDL and total of 155. During the last 15 months my A1C has also gone from 7.1 to 5.6. I do that eating what is considered high saturated fat and cholesterol. The most important thing I changed is cutting out all added sugar in that time.

I also agree that eggs are GREAT and very nutritious.

Hi I was looking at the comments to your first link. I thought this was pretty interesting."MDBritt • 7 months ago
You are still well behind the curve with your research, my friend.

First, your "good cholesterol, bad cholesterol" distinction is not quite accurate. The focus is now on "oxidized LDL" as the primary culprit in cardiovascular heart disease (CHD). While high levels of LDL are generally predictive of unhealthy levels of oxidized LDL, it does not necessarily follow that foods that elevate LDL also increase oxidation. So, the question is: what *does* lead to high levels of oxidation? And the answer there is high levels of simple carbohydrate - and especially sugar - consumption. Trans fats also play a role. Saturated fats do not appear to do so......, the best *easy* measure of the level of oxidation is the Triglyceride:HDL ratio. If that is high, you are in trouble. But the consumption of saturated fats tends to *lower* TRI:HDL ratios while simple carbs raise it. So, while we are not quite ready to say that saturated fats are "heart healthy," it is the emerging consensus that they play little role......rates of CHD while excess Omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids are associated with higher levels of inflammation (the ratio of 3s to 6s is key). Inflammation levels are, in turn, thought to be a primary cause of CHD. Finally, as a side note, most saturated fatty acids, like those found in milk, are actually quite anti-inflammatory despite what some anti-dairy folks say.

Oh, yes, but you are right that eggs are an excellent food!"
I did shorten the reply but its worth reading.

Well, there is good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL). I think egg yokes have good cholesterol.

HI all
Finally made my egg white omlet, fashioning it after my sister's, that she made for me. Hers was definitely better looking and tasting than mine, but, oh well.

I'll try it again tomorrow morning. After I was done, I wondered what was missing--oh yeah, the egg yolks, it was hard for me to throw the egg yolks out. I do like those.

Taking the lion for a walk, on a leash.

I bough a chocolate bar today. 70% cocoa, dark chocolate with almond bits. There is 85% or higher, but that is too bitter for me. So 100 grams of this bar has 42 grams of carbs. 10 of the 42 are fibre, so 32 are net or digestible carbs. I ate two 10 gram squares, so 6.4 grams of net carbs.

Not so bad really. I just shouldn't eat the whole bar.

hope the car repair was minor. Lots of walking and I hope good amount of sleep while on vacation should help keep you healthy. I don't know if lack of sleep affects the blood sugar but I know that your muscles need sleep to help repair and to keep them healthy.

Went to the doctor today and he is fully on board with the weight loss goal, and happy with the progress of my bs (just by number he sees on meter) he thinks we will be happy with the a1c results as I have been carb smart (i like the term rather than low car) and been running good numbers. I am still having some issues maintaining a higher number during the day, tend to drop to 3.3 or lower but, I am working on it =)

He didn't want to lower my meds at this time, said we would discuss it after a1c

KATTREE,
I haven't had any problems with carbs, since I've stuck to low carb for the past 26 months. However I do have my suspicions that if I tried to eat mashed potatoes or something like that, then I'd be in some digestive distress just like you were.

Perhaps eating low carb is self regulating once it gets started.

fbs 127, ate a burrito yesterday. it had rice and whole wheat in it as well as steak. I usually eat low carb but felt rebellious. After eating it I didn't feel so rebellious, I had a stomach ache. So yesterday for dinner I had low carb. and this morning I had low carb. I tried something new. "basic Almond biscuit.' It called for 4 tsp baking powder, seemed a bit salty to me. Would baking powder make something salty? The good thing is that it had only 9 carb per biscuit. i also had turkey sausage and a egg. 2 hours after my bs was 141

The metabolism is what I was told from my doctors since I was a child. I was always active and healthy, just couldn't lose weight or stayed small.

Do I fully believe this? Not sure, but I know I sure compounded my own problems with my eating habits. I didn't eat in front of people, and rarely ate even after that. Further killing it myself. So when I did eat, I was always in starvation mode.

I have come to learn that in order to function with my body, I need to eat small regular meals =)

My motivation for getting healthy has always been, to be healthy. Not necessarily to lose weight. I used to go to the gym every day except sundays and never lost a thing. I did have good muscles though, I now realize, now that I am older that it was my eating habits that prevented weight loss.

So like you suggest, I am working on my muscles to waken them up, and get my body burning =)

Hi all,
I have been gone a long time. What brought me back is while on vacation at moms we had a huge scare. My mom went into a diabetic coma her BS dropped to 20. We called paramedics and they brought it back up with sugar water by IV. We did not recognize it as a diabetes problem cause mom has Parkinson's too. She had fallen on her butt at the Grand Canyon and we thought she may have jarred some wires loose literally. A few months ago she had brain surgery to have a brain stimulator put in. Paramedics let us know if shes acting like a drunk its BS. I have not tested mine in about six months so need to develop the habit again. I am kinda scared to find out I have not been taking care of myself real well. Dealing with other family members issues.

BOBBI,
I had the same blood sugar experience with a banana years ago. I just happened to measure my blood sugar after eating one. Yikes! No more bananas since then.

What I didn't know was that I could have a good guess at how foods would impact me if I only looked at their carbs. The nutrition of a banana show (via googling it) that 100 grams of banana has 23 grams of carbs, but 2.6 of those are fibre, so 23 - 2.6, or 20.4 grams of net or digestible carbs.

My rule of thumb today is to avoid things that are more than 6%, and bananas are 20.4%. It works for me.

I make great muffins using almond flour and sweetened with stevia. Some whipped cream sweetened with Mio work on top. I still like some treats, just low carb treats.

P.S. I just checked out orange juice, just a liquid, but it is around 10% carbs (sugar) by weight.

BOBBI_229,

Add your carbs. Forget about how much sugar. Look on the box to see how many carbs you have. Normally sugarfrees have fewer carbs but not always. I count 45 carbs per meal and 20 for snacks. So look at your carbs. emoticon

AMANDADNIEMI,
A dead metabolism waking up, that is an interesting concept.

I myself am exercising again for the first time in years. I have a number of motivations for that:
- live longer by being fitter
- able to physically do more things (strength, flexibility)
- loose body fat
- build muscle

The "loose body fat" idea is related to not just burning calories while exercising, but having muscles that are more awake/alive even when not active, and hence burn more calories when dormant too. So I guess this is waking up a dead metabolism too.

Hi James,

I didn't really need an explanation, but one is always nice to reaffirm what I know. Since I started working out I went from 6.2 down to 5.2 consistent numbers with the occasional 3's.

I do read carbs on everything, not just the sugar. I do not go for carbs when I am hungry but usually protein and I do try to balance my carb, protein and fat for each meal.

My doctor diagnosed me as having my metabolism being 'dead' and it is just starting to come back in, which is what is making me hungry. Its kinda great =)

BOBBI_229,
As an example, here is a sugar free, fat free pudding:

www.jello.com/product/sugar-free-des
se
rts/chocolate-fudge-fat-free

The 11 gram packet has 8 grams of carbs, one of those is fibre, none are sugar, but 8-1 or 7 of them will impact blood sugar, so that package is 7 of 11 digestible carbs, around 60% carbs. Yikes! I guess you need to add water or milk to make the pudding, but still.

BOBBI_299,

SGASPERSON is right. All digestible carbs count and raise blood sugar, not just sugar. It took me decades to learn that because I was fixated on the word "sugar".

If you look at a nutrition label, and here is an example:
caloriecount.about.com/calories-gene
ra
l-mills-honey-nut-cheerios-i8045

Per 30 grams they are 23.2 grams of carbs, and that 23.2 has a further breakdown of 9.6 grams of sugar and 2.1 of fibre, and other carbs in the breakdown that just aren't listed. It is actually worse than just 9.6, the real number is 23.2 grams of carbs, but don't count the 2.1 of fibre, so 23.2-2.1 or 21.1 grams of digestible carbs.

That makes them 70% digestible carbs. I avoid almost everything over 6%

AMANDADNIEMI,

Eating any kind of carbs (other than fibre) raises blood sugar. To get blood sugar back down your pancreas releases insulin to store the excess carbs away as body fat. This also locks up existing body fat. So you end up getting hungry before things settle down. You have body fat but can't access it for a few days really.

During that time you get hungry before you dip into your own fat reserves. The solution, eat more carbs. A vicious cycle. After you are away from wheat and other high carb things for a few days you can dip into your reserves, and cravings go down. You have a much better path to loose body fat if you avoid carbs, and you won't be hungry all the time either.

I hope that explains it.

It's the carbs you need to count, not the sugar. Pudding has a lot of carbs and would raise your blood sugar. It does mine.

Lost two pounds this week! Doubled my calorie burn and exercise time goal and I am so proud of that. Gotta keep it up! My diet has been good, enjoying the healthy choices. Constantly hungry and I am battling a lot of low numbers but its nicer to battle lows than it is to fight highs.

Morning, in regard to cholesterol they say green leafy vegetables are good. I have done some reading and there seems to be cholesterol that is good for you and some that's bad. Seems that it is a moderation that is best and that your body actually make some itself. I would suggest doing some reading.
My A1c came back at 6. I and my doctor are pleased, he said I was considered pre diabetic now. so I plan to continue my low carb and exercise routine. Its great to be off medication, I have been off since December 26th 2013. ( I still remember the day that he said he would have to put me on another medication because the metformin dosage was maxed out, that was the day that I decided I would do anything to get it under control)
My next goal to be working on is to loose the rest of this weight.

JSTETSER,
When I eat in restaurants, which is what I assume is your challenge, when on vacation I look at the menu ahead of time if I have Internet access.

I then make low carb selections. Virtually any meat is fine as long as it isn't in some sugar based sauce. Then there are substitutions. Like a breakfast place that serves bacon, eggs and toast. They often allow for substitutions if you ask. I ask for sliced tomatoes rather than toast.

It can work.
