What does the label on the box say is a serving size? How many carbs in that serving. How does it compare to the meal plan that you were given. No matter what the time of day, these are important markers....... Adjust your portion to correspond to your meal plan (and make sure you include all the protein and fat recommended as well.)

As for "eating out of the box" please be sure to measure the appropriate serving size for that snack so you don't overeat.....

Just a few suggestions.

The only cold cereal that works for me is in the health food isle, Nature's Path, Smart Bran, Oat Bran with Psyllium. It is VERY high in fiber. I weigh out 20 grams. The usual serving is 30 grams. I use unsweetened almond milk, only 1/4 cup.

I agree with adding protein... and also have a suggestion.

Many of us as diabetics are more carb sensitive in the morning than at other times of the day--and cereal is what's known as a common "trigger food", too, pretty high on the glycemic index. I usually save cereal for a later snack--and when I do that, I, too, prefer a bit oatmeal or cheerios with fruit--always in carefully measured portions so I don't exceed that 30g carb count. Whatever you decide to eat for breakfast, try limiting it to no more than 30 grams of carbs, and add the protein to slow the absorption rate.... and yes, count at least half of the fiber as carbs. I count them all. For me, they are NOT free, they are just a different form of carb and if I don't count them it messes me up...

And yes, I do my best to plan my meals for the day, and make sure that I'm getting at least 25 grams of fiber. That means taking a fiber supplement to fill in... I had a bout with colon cancer, and I'm doing EVERYTHING I can NOT to go there again--and besides, it does help with a few other things as well, which I won't go into! LOL

Keep trying new things, and keep testing... it isn't easy, but it isn't rocket science, either! LOL

"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." Walter P. Chrysler said it, I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steady, like a heartbeat... and that works too! LOL

Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called t

Have you thought about a fiber supplement? There is a wonderful form of colorless tasteless powder you can buy and mix into EVERYTHING... water, yogurt, soup, anything and everything. Walmart has the brand of it too and it is less costly..... it comes in a green and white canister.
Just a thought....

Also are you exercising before or after breakfast?

Ok, well this moring, I had 3/4 cup Fiber One 80 with 1/2 cup skim milk and a string cheese. One hour after, my bs was 149! 2 hours after, it was 131.

Normally, 2 hours after a meal, my readings are somewhere around 95-120.

I keep details of what I eat, when I eat it and my #'s. I have a notebook that I keep it all in so it's organized. I also keep track of it here on SparkPeople too.

I guess I need to try other fiber ideas. Or, perhaps try it at a different time of day? I like the idea of snacking on it right out of the box with no milk... I may try that.

There sure is a lot of trial and error involved here. What works for one, may not work for the next. All of the suggestions and advice are wonderful. I appreciate it.

Totally agree about pairing a carb with a protein.

I also do like FIRECOM does . . . I add about 1/4 c of the FiberChoice 80 calorie cereal to 1/2 cup greek yogurt.

And I totally agree that I'd be testing 2 hrs. after meals. That's what my endo recommended for me, and it has worked. Definitely journal what you eat, the blood sugar reading 2 hrs. after and see what works for you, and what doesn't. It is a lot of trial and error, but worth it.

Good luck!!!

Amy, First, having a 140 BG reading only an hour after eating is not that high. It is a spike if your Fasting Blood Glucose # was a 60 or 70. But Glucose number is expected to rise after eating.
But what is important is what your Diabetic body does with that breakfast...that is why most Dr.'s, Endocrinologist and ADA , recommend 2 hours after a meal, and then 3 hrs, especially if the 2 hr # was high.
Testing at only one hour...pretty much shows by higher reading, that you've eaten.

If you get in the habit of journalling your BG test #, and whether it is before or after a meal, and WHAT that meal consisted of; you and your Dr. will gain valuable insight as to how your body is dealing with diabetes. And every one is different.

P.S. Have only tried one little sample box of Fiber One. I liked it though. Would buy it, but my husband is on a low fiber diet, and we can't use two different kinds of cereal fast enough, before they go stale.
That has been the biggest problem for me...two loafs of bread, my 7 grain light style and his low fiber white. Pasta..we just have to get the plain , without the extra fiber. And fresh vegetables...I have to eat the same one till it's gone. It makes menu planning and shopping a BIG chore.

I have 1/4 c every morning with Kroger Carb Master yogurt. I sometimes add fresh cooked cranberries with no sweetener at all. Love the tart and my blood sugar does not spike.

Good luck... see what works for you.... just remember to watch your protein closely... sadly we have to watch that too because to much will also cause problems.
It should be easy to keep track of if you are using the tracker here.

Thank you... I always measure exactly. I measure the cereal and milk. I use skim milk. It was the only thing I had besides water. I really like the Fiber One 80, it was one of the kinds I had tried that seemed to raise my number. The other had sliced almonds in it, although I can't remember the exact name of it. I liked both. I think I will try adding some cheese with the cereal and see what that does.

I have heard some test 1 hour and some 2 hours after a meal. My Dr wanted 1 hour after while my dietician seemed to recommend 2 hours after. Just another confusing part of all this. Ha! Sometimes I do both, but the test strips are so expensive.

I like your idea of having cheese with it. I'm fairly new to diabetes, but have learned it is best to have carbs and protein every time you eat.
Good Luck

I like Kashi Go Lean, not the crunchy one. At first it wasn't too tasty, but I have gotten used to it, and really like it now. It has 30 grams of carbs and 10 grams of fiber, so, 20 net carbs. Also has 13 grams of protein.
I hope you find what works best for you.

Have you tried the Fiber One 80 calorie? I like them all but that is my favorite. Just remember that the fiber is very important as well. I notice a slight rise in my sugar when I have tested ( out of supplies and no money to get any right now) but... I use skim/fat free milk only and also measure precisely the amount I eat.

I agree not to eat anything thing else with it to help prevent the rise in sugar as well as my doctor and dietian/nutritionist have always told me to check my sugar 2 hours after eating.

Thank you... I just have the cereal with skim milk. Nothing else. I was so happy to actually like the cereal that offered good fiber. I thought it was a good balanced breakfast. Both 2 times now it has sent my bs up. I'm wondering if I could try the cereal with a high protein (maybe a string cheese)? Do you think that would help?

Amy what else are you having with it? Are there other items with lots of carbs? Are you using Skim Milk? Or having banana or such with it? If so you might be able to cut some of the carbs with cutting back on the other carb items. I also have trouble getting enough fiber and when I find something that does have lots of fiber I like to stick with it. Good luck on finding your balance . emoticon

I've tried 2 different kinds of the Fiber One cereal thinking they would be a good choice for breakfast. With both, my bs was 140+ an hour after eating it. I have not had that happen with any other meal choice. I'm bummed as I really like it. I may see what happens if I have the cereal with a higher protein choice? What do you think? It's hard enough for me trying to find fiber rich meals.
