"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." thanks, Walter P. Chrysler. I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!

Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steady, like a heartbeat... and that works too! LOL

to the couple of people who addressed my question, we are not doing low fat. I meant that I'm bringing the fats down some and trying to keep saturated fats under control as in not letting him have pizza and hamburgers too often. I use plenty of olive oil, nuts, avacados etc. But I think it's more cutting out all the white flour, white sugar, high fat desserts and most fast foods that have brought his calories down so much. However, we saw his doctor yesterday and he told me not to worry that he was losing weight at this point. His numbers are looking much better.

Oh yeah, AMEN, WOWEETWO! LOL

I'm on that same diet pretty much. I can have a LITTLE more protein, but it's still only about 4 ounces a day from animal sources... not easy AT ALL... and I just got scolded again a few weeks ago by my diabetes educator for not eating enough! She knows I have CKD, but Oh, if she only knew... all kinds of fun, right?!
emoticon

Between her and my renal nutrition specialist, I could easily go nuts!

Yeah... nuts. they actually make a pretty good snack--as long as I track and don't go over my limit for the daily phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, sodium.... did I leave anything out, Mary? Oh yeah, drink the water! LOL

I am SO grateful I have this team, and the ESRD folks too--I am ALWAYS learning...
I think if I'd had this team back when I was first diagnosed, I wouldn't BE on the End Stage Renal Disease team! Of course, I have some wonderful friends there, but still...

Be grateful, gang, count your blessings and do your homework! LOL

kidney disease diet
low protein, low phosphorous, low potassium, low sodium
plus insulin to cover carbs
leaves carbs and fats
yep it's hard but better by far than having to do dialysis for sure and the endo swears to me the insulin and the kidney diet is far better to worry about than the diabetes and we can control that lol

How much is converted and when are dependent on a lot of different variables. That's another reason why testing your body's reaction to foods is so important. Some insulin dependant diabetics I know tell me they have to bolus for protein, others don't. I suspect (but don't know) that serving size is an important factor in the difference.

Thanks for the information. I've been trying to follow the guideline for nutrition recommended by sparks, but not always successful. Mostly not! I get one thing right but not another.

Thanks for the help.

FDEVINE1, this Spark Team is a great resource, but you might also want to check out the Spark Team, "Living Low Carb (Atkins and Other Plans)". It's been a great resource for me since starting Atkins on Feb. 1. I keep my Carbs at 10%, Fats at 65%, and Proteins at 25% per day. The good fats I eat are olive oil, bacon fat, butter, a little full fat cheese, a little almond butter, almonds, coconut oil, and heavy whipping cream in my coffee.

I had a physical 7 weeks after starting Atkins and my bloodwork was phenomenal, my doctor said that. Hard to believe eating like this did such a good job at getting my numbers down so quickly.

I think it will help you to keep your precentages where you want them by clicking on "See today's full report" on the bottom right side of your Nutrition Tracker. At the bottom of the full report page it gives you a pie chart of your percentages. That way you can add fats and proteins for your son to get his calories up and keep the percentages on target......Patti

There are tons of articles on this site. Yes, we need the GOOD fats in our diet. These actually facilitate carbohydrate metabloization. So, examples of good fats:

olive oil

safflower oil

vegetable oil

I really prefer the olive and safflower oils.

DO stick to lean cuts of meat. DO include fish.

Why are you trying to keep the fats down? We really do need to eat enough calories and carbs are problematic for us diabetics and too much protein can also raise blood sugar so fats are pretty much all that's left. On top of that, fats are an important part of our diet for maintaining brain function and overall heath.

If you've bought into the fats are bad mentality, you still have lots of choices of "good" fats like olive oil to add. But I'd encourage you to do a bit of research into the lipid hypothesis (do a google search for Gary Taubes). I get approximately 70% of my calories from fat and as a result have great blood sugar numbers as well as great cholesterol numbers.

Never thought I'd have this problem, but now that my son has diabetes I can't seem to keep his calories high enough while keeping his carbs and fats down. Any suggestions will be so appreciated.
