I just got a new dr. and I was talking about eating only 15-35 carbs per meal I'd have lows. I am usually very active. ( for me) when I am active I need more food. I also have lowsm if I don't eat on schedule when taking the pills. Not on insulin as of yet. Junevia 100 mgs, glimbride 4mgs and metformin 1000 mgs. I recently had to change dr cause my former dr would not or did not want to pursue my care. My numbers are good compared to 266 which is what I was having until now. I am to see the nutritionist in April but I have been testing and for me 15-35 carbs do not work for me. But that is me. At represent time I will continue taking meds as is unless there are major changes and Dr suggest. We shall see.

Did you tell your doc and nutritionist about the lows. Are you on insulin or pills. If pills, did he consider lowering your dose? Just asking....

We each are different I have tried eating 35 carbs per meal and under with my meds I had lows galore. 45 may be my limit but I am usually very active if so I get a little more at breakfast when working out at the gym etc and dinner maybe a little learner on the carbs. Wish best to all of us.

I agree with LittleWind, testing really is the key. I was only required to test once a day, but that didn't give me any real picture of how my type 2 was doing. So, I got my doctor to increase testing supplies so I can do it 2 or 3 times a day, and it's been a real eye-opening experience.

The government 45 gram minimum isn't good for me, either. Recently I've been reading and starting to use the guidelines inThe Blood Sugar Solution, a new book from Dr. Mark Hyman. He has one level of diet for people who are more or less healthy but need to lose weight, and a stricter, 6-week long lower carb one for people with diabetes or "diabesity." So far, my numbers are better than they've been in quite a while, and I've even had a (GASP!) low day, something rare for me. If I keep this up, I'll have to reduce medicine.

There's a new team just starting to discuss the book, if anyone is interested. - Claudia

It is a shame that nutritionists must give the government nutritional standards as they are way off the mark! I really think it is iimportant to eat the amount of carbs you can tolerate based on your postmeal numbers. For me, I stive for 15 gams or one carb serving a meal. I can usually handle up to 30 before my numbers get higher than I'd like to see them. Everyone is different so testing is key!

The diabetic nutritionist gave me the same advice. I spoke with her supervisor who told me that they were required to use the government guide for nutrition. This was a number of years ago prior to when the pyramid was changed.

45- 60 carbs is way to high for me. I aim for about 15 per meal. Will go a bit higher if it is early in the day and the carb is complex - like carrots.

Wow.... 45 to 60 carbs per meal is a LOT. I wonder how many diabetic patiens this person has, and how well controlled they are...... Any way to find out???? Those numbers sound more for regular patients, not diabetics.

I would be in a permanent coma if I ate that much carb...... My bg would always be through the roof and I'm on insulin......

Please make sure you test both before and after each meal and watch your numbers carefully.

I will look into finding a Diabetic Nutritionist in my area. I do run out of things to eat which will not add too much salt or carbs to a meal. The D.E. did tell me women should aim for 45-60 grams of carbs per meal and men can have up to 65 grams. That was news to me because I never thought to break it down like that before. My biggest meal is usually lunch so I can work off the calories, have a light dinner and a before bed snack. Now I have to plan a little carb and protein before bed so I don't trigger my Dawn phenomenon. A nutritionist or even a N.D. could help me gain more energy without going over my calorie limits under a carb watching plan.

The first step is always the hardest.
Stop thinking about it and just do it.

Glad you finally got to see an DE. What about a Diabetic Nutritionist? Any classes in your area or support groups? Check it out, you might find something.

I too power walk with Leslie Sansonne DVD "Walk away the pounds". I can keep my FBS down if I exercise in the evening, I know I miss TV but for me there is not very much to miss.
Strength training with resistance bands builds muscle and muscle burns calories and tones the muscles too so you can look thinner without losing weight. I know that for sure I am still stuck on a plateau but I know I had to buy new jeans and smaller underwear so try not to go by the scale,

I always do my small night time snack right after my walk and it helps with my Dawn phenonemon,.
I am so glad you were able to get the diabetes testing. Almost all if these companies have websites. My accucheck site is open 24/7 so any time I have questions I can go to them Perhaps if you call the American Diabetes Association or go to their website they can send you publications from the NIH,
It was my understanding that once Diabetes is diagnosed by a physician the person should be given the diabetes education most insurances pay but alas not all do. It does depend on the states too.
If I did not have it I would call the hospitals in your area and ask about education. When you call you can ask for their education department if they have one ours do. We have round table discussions and some support groups too.
Some times you have to look for these things. Try not to say you do not have access to them till you have tried to find them in your area.
Diabetes education for diabetics is an essential part of the diagnosis. Get on to your Drs or Endos to help you with this important information.
If I did not have access i would be calling our State health offices to find out about how you can be educated and where in your area. Hope any of this helps it is such a great help to know about your condition especially since WE are expected to manage it on our own.

Great post! Sounds like you have a fabulous educator and I'm glad for you. I'm not shocked that you'd get more information from her than the Dr.! Nutrition, etc., is just not the Drs. bag it seems.

Good luck. You are so right that we have to manage diabetes . . . not let diabetes manage us! It's up to US to do what it takes to have a quality life.

Hi, everyone:
I finally got to meet with a diabetes educator who does free sessions as part of a drug company's give-back program. (I live where Sanofi-Pasteur makes Lantus in PA) It was insightful and I told her what I had been doing since diagnosis to educate myself. She had not heard of SparkPeople, but when I told her about the information and support they offer, she quickly got that this is a lifestyle change toward health and not just a diet. We discussed the Dawn Phenomenon vs the Smogyi effect and determined which fit my experience. In all, I am glad I finally went to the classes and felt good that she told me my efforts so far where good ones considering I got zilch from the M.D. on what to do. This just motivates me to step up the exercise now that the weather is getting warmer. She told me because of her own family history of diabetes, she power-walks 3 miles a day without fail and has been able to hold back weight-gain and the on-set of diabetes in her life. Diabetes can be managed and let you enjoy a quality life, if you want to, was the main message I got from our session.

The first step is always the hardest.
Stop thinking about it and just do it.
