I heard a comeback at a restaurant a while ago, someone at the next table as I was getting ready to leave... his friend was being the saboteur, and he just looked at him and asked...

"Oh, really? When did you get a medical degree?..."

I was laughing all the way home! LOL Don't know why I didn't remember this when I was posting last time... hm. lol

Aww the food police LOL my hubbie tried that on me last night. I had crackers with smart balance Peanut butter. He said "Are you to have those" My response was (he had 2 fish sandwiches which were breaded that does not count the buns that came with the sandwiches. After asking me that again and again. I ask him are you to have those 2 sandwiches? Which not only have buns but are breaded. He response so you will not answer me. I said "I did." that was the end of that. He finally got the message...tend to your own business, He has pre-diabetes LOL I will not get into that debate.

I know what you mean, but it helps me to think that they are actually being critical of themselves, that is, they see you taking care of yourself to a greater degree than they are taking care of themselves, they feel guilty, they get defensive, and they bring it up to you to assuage their guilt. My response is to ask them why they aren't doing the same....not in a mean way, but to say, why donīt you take your levels before you eat, or donīt you feel like crap after you eat that?, I do. etc. Sometimes that shuts them down. Either way it's about them, really (isnīt everything?)

and to add to that i hate for people to watch me and say are you supposed to eat that?? i really hate it for sure as the kidney diet i am on for chronic kidney disease on top of the diabetes all the artificial sweetners have been cut out and yes i have sugared stuff and cover it with the insulin by counting carbs..but please no more splenda birthday cakes..i'd rather have two bites of real cake or on piece of real chocolate than all the other 'sweetened articailly stuff'

A couple years back I am confessing LOL I was always ashamed to use my asthma spray in public. Well something happened when I turned 45. Now at age 51 I could care less what folks think. They will talk about what ever because their lives are very empty. I use my spray when ever I have to. If they want to stare I let them look and go on with my business. LOL

Girl you can not change ignorance. You keep doing what you have to I sure do now.

speaking of rudeness folks say to me "You don't look like you have diabetes". I never knew diabetes had a look. emoticon So I turn it back on them and say that is what Gods grace can do and he is good.

just again yesterday, so&so walked in on me testing my bs... why r u doing that, you don't have diabetes... yes, I do and prefer to test. Oh, well, you really don't need to...

so, i do think this is in part... maybe totally about their crazy, uninformed ideas... combined with their rudeness...

You do NOT need to justify your actions to anyone. As you noted, this just opens the door to more discussion/debate. Smile sweetly and move onto another topic. Don't play their game or by their rules.

Number one rule when dealing with a difficult person: don't play their game. They have been doing it so long, they've perfected it so you will never "win". Pulling their rationale out from under them ends their game. For instance,

DP: Justify to me why you do xyz
You: I don't need to justify it....

I've worked with a few doozies in my time.

My hubbie is the #1 tempter. 100 days says to put them off by saying no thanks, I have it later. Beck says to toss the unplanned food. LOL! now for the exercise hubbie has a bad habit of coming in the room I am exercising in. Well after many times of disrupting me I told him face to face that he was distracting me and I needed him to leave the room. All said with love and tact. I've learned to work around him. I keep my door closed that means do not disturb! Hes learning but still need reminding. If it is hubbie have a heart to heart talk with him. If it is anyone else tell them to back off... emoticon I was tempted today to buy cookies but when I read the labels and I remember how hard I work out at the gym I put those devils down.

I just say this is my body and I prefer to make sure I keep it as healthy as I can. I feel great right now thank you, I change the subject and walk away if I can.

If they do pursue it you can always say you prefer to keep your toes and vision.

This is absolute INSANITY!!! Take it from someone who DIDN"T take it seriously when diagnosed with pre-diabetes. I havent even reached the insulin stage yet and I STILL regret doing something sooner every day of my life. You need to do whatever it takes to get thie person/people out of your life, even if it means hiring a hit man. They obviously DO NOT care squat about YOU!!! Self- preservation, baby! emoticon

Yup . . . taking away the bread basket makes some people feel like they've been punched -- well-- in the bread basket!!!

In my house it's rice and potatoes. I do not eat white rice and occassionally eat sweet potatoes. They're free to make white rice or potatoes if they want. But they know better than to bother me with it! LOL

OMG; and let's not get started when someone tells you, "if you'd only adopt the MacDougall diet, you'd be cured." Or only do "cleansing fasts" or whatever is the BS message of the day.

There's a term on diabetes forums: YMMV. Your Mileage May Vary. You choose what works for you and don't defend it. I tend to push low carb info a bit more than I probably should but then again, I've always treated my diabetes as a big science experiment and I know for a fact that carbs require more insulin (duh!) than other foods, our bodies don't need them in excess, and I know they'll make me gain weight. But try and take away someone's bread basket and watch the sparks fly!

Totally agree with VALERIE. If you put on your sweetest smile and just give them the message that you feel best when you test (or whatever the issue may be), then get the feet MOVING AWAY from that person. You don't have to stand there!

I have raised a son with challenges and sooooo many insensitive remarks, that I just learned a smile is the way to go for me, because it defuses my anger and allows me to deliver my message in a nicer manner.

Good luck, hang in there and stick to YOUR plan. And that is another response too. "I see. I am glad it works for you not to test, but that's what I have to do; it's part of my treatment plan."

Love that!

what i find is that when I try to explain, defend or justify anything... all too often that just opens the conversation & it gets worse... i have no desire to argue with anyone about how I should care for myself...

I'm guessing that if it's other diabetics who are trying to undermine you, that they're actually jealous of the care you're giving yourself, or feeling guilty that they aren't as diligent.

If someone were to say something to me, like I'm testing too much, or whatever, I'd give them my best smile and say, "I find I feel incredible when I take care of myself."

ever experience someone who intereferes with taking care of yourself?

i have someone tell me often/repeatedly to lighten up b/c mine is not as bad as theirs or it's not bad yet... so don't bother testing, don't worry...

(i posted this on the food police thread, but it occurred to me, this is the opposite problem... instead of trying to help me with my plan, they actually try to disrupt my efforts to monitor, eat well, exercise, etc...)
