Interesting topic for me since I drank orange juice for years, it took care of a problem I had since I was a child. When I learned I had Diabetes 2 my Diabetes team at my hospital (nurse and dietician) didn't want me to drink juice anymore but now I drink about 4 ozs in the morning. I was taking my medication with it until my daughter read somewhere it can cancel the effect of the meds. So I take them with water and then drink the juice. I haven't had any problem with my blood sugar and I only drink Florida Natural Not From Concentrate.

Thanks Foxstar.....I never thought of freezing juice. In comparison to so many high cal/carb things, I can do without juice. It's the "goodies" like dessert!! that I have the problem with.

It's just that oranges are so expensive, it seems OJ is more economical. I remember reading how years ago, kids got an orange in their Christmas stocking as their gift, it's getting to the point in the Northeast we're going to be going back to that! You can find OJ on sale, last winter I refused to pay $2.00 (5 for $10.00) for one orange that was so banged up looking and small like a tangerine when I could have gotten a quart of OJ for $2.00 (on sale) which would have lasted longer then one orange especially if I diluted it a little. I have family in Calif. and their oranges look like bowling balls and so plentiful that their tree looks fake. They can't even give them away because everyone else has them that big and plentiful too. I guess in the Northeast, we're supposed to be happy with an over abundance of apples (which I hate).....Except warm apple pie with ice cream, caramel sauce and lots of whipped cream!).

Thanks again.

I do not drink juice . it sends my blood sugars out of control and they are empty calories . then they let it drop fast .so the roller coaster ride is not worth the juice .

Water has nothing in it for your body to react to chemically, but fasting blood sugar means just that. Nothing taken orally until it's checked.

If you're having labs done, you are usually allowed water (they want you hydrated so there's something to take out!) but I was told that you should save the coffee until afterward... I don't THINK drinking caffeine has anything to do with making you insulin resistant... I'm just glad the question never came up for me-- I can't even stand the SMELL of coffee, let alone drink it... and get this, I live in STARBUCKS COUNTRY! LOL

I don't even keep juice in the house. However, if I find that my bg is too low in the morning (before I work out) I will have fruit.

LORRELIS if you must have juice. Buy the large container, then pour some into smaller containers and freeze it. You can take a small container out of the freezer and have the juice a lot longer.

After I've had my coffee and egg I'll drink 24 oz of water with a tablespoon or two of lemon juice at some point during the morning, then one with lunch, then one in the afternoon and one with dinner. Only two have lemon juice in them though. the others just have ice.

I learned long ago to eat the fruit, not drink the juice. The result is slower. My morning BS is usually about 115. Pre-diabetic but I have to be careful.

The only time I had a problem was when I accidentally took my hubby's diabetes medication, and he takes 4 kinds in 4 pills every morning. It was stupid and thoughtless, but it was too late when I figured out what I had done. Thank goodness my son is a dietician. He told me to buy a bunch of cokes (the real kind which I hadn't had in 45 years) and slug one every hour. His words. I don't take my vitamins anymore until I've had a cup of coffee and am fully awake.

do you take that blood sugar to find out where it stands?? first thing for me everymorning before anything else is to get that number and know where i stand before i start the day..juice is an awful way to start the day for a diabetic unless your numbers are really low you can also feel weak and nasty when they are really high so you need to test to decide how you are going to do things
as for me i drink water also but not before i do that test..that test is TOP PRIORITY daily

For all those reasons, I DO NOT Drink Juice. I eat fruit only in the AM till Noon. And always with protein. I Always pair a carb with a protein...The protein helps delay the processing of the carbs and help them to not be absorbed...

I would look at upping you night time snack to have carbs and protein.

I can not have carbs like that. I don't like how I feel. I am pretty careful with fruit and only eat that with protein.

I hear all kinds of things with juice. Most dietitians/diabetic educators don't want you to drink your carbs/calories. Some say it's fine sometimes as long as it has fiber in it and it's only 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup for grape juice. That's why a lot of nutritionists say stay away from the juice because it's calorie dense and lacks fiber. Also you gulp it down whereas a fresh fruit takes longer to eat, hence satisfying you. Also I've heard, dilute the juice with water. I've also heard to consider juice as a "medication" meaning to use it only to bring up low sugars.

Have said all this, when I was in the hospital for a long time, they gave me juice every morning! Either orange, pineapple, or apple juice and once in a while grape juice. Obviously, a very small glass - I guess 4 oz if that or that little carton.

I don't have a problem drinking any juice in 1/2 cup servings. My problem is I like the mixed juices like orange/banana/strawberry, but they only come in 1/2 gallons and it goes bad before I can use it all by only drinking 1/2 cup in the morning.

Experiment and see what happens. Each person is different as are doctors and diabetic educators. Even respected magazines differ.

I used to have grapefruit juice and that was OK. Then I went on statins so I can't have it anymore. I tried orange juice but my bg shot up, so the diabetic nurse suggested tomato or vegetable juice or apple juice. I drink mostly water now, but have the occasional V8, but it has salt in it. On rare occasions I have the apple juice, but that puts my bg up too. I have protein for breakfast with a carb such as wholemeal bread, some salad and a piece of fruit, for instance a plum.

My issue before medication was fasting bg was too high. The diabetic nutristionist said start the day with protein and add carbs later Do you do a reading first thing in the a.m.? Is it very low? Are you measuring by your energy level? As they say, we're all different, and have different requirements re: what makes the bg level get too high.

Hey all, question... Do you start your day with orange juice, or some kind of juice to get your bg up fast? What do you eat or drink in the morning for "quick carbs?"

This morning I felt weak, getting up. I've lost weight, altho my rate of losing has slowed. But this morning I felt so weak, & my doc has said once a pre-diabetic, i should always "think like a diabetic", to stay out of trouble. I don't dispute that, but maybe I've been overdoing just the protein to start the day.

Thanks, my friends!
