Learned all that in my diabetes class. I can eat anything, I just need to fit into my carb choices.

I guess the American Diabetes Assoc. is changing the fiber thing again. I was originally told to subtract all fiber now it's 1/2 fiber from total carbs. I guess more fiber is not a bad thing just need to make sure I drink more water.

I just talked with the Nutritionist/Diabetes Eeducator about this last night. I too have been having the cycles where I do everything right, then get overwhelmed and do the "I DONT CARE" method (and eat the whole pan of brownies)

First of all she told me to cut it out with the guilt. We are human, and this is hard. There are going to be slip ups. The issue isnt that I slip up, the issue is what I do afterwards.

Then she said that your body doesnt know a mashed potato carb from a brownie carb from an apple carb. Equal carbs are equal carbs whether they come from starch or sugar, or natural sugar. For my diabetes, she didnt care where the carb came from as long as my carbs were in the meal range (for me thats 30-60 per meal)

However, because another one of my goals is weight loss, I also needed to be watching the fat. THATS where she said the choice was. The brownie and the apple may be equal in carbs, but the brownie was equal to the apple with a huge glop of butter on it.

So, she said to stop depriving myself and then binging. So, for both glucose control AND weight loss, she suggested that I pick 1 day a week, where I could eat those high fat carbs.

Also to keep it in perspective, she said that for weight loss, you should try to pick calorie to fat ratio appropriate foods the other 6 days. So, for every 100 calories an item is, it should have 3 grams of fat or less, to be counted as being in the approprite ratio. So for example if something is 400 calories, it should have no more than 12g of fat.

Hope that helps a little

Ooohhhhh, you can do this! Get back to basics, pre-plan your meals and snacks so that you're prepared for the day. Set an alarm on your cell phone so that you remember when to eat or take your readings. Not sure what to pack for dinner? Salad and sandwich in ziploc bags are a a great trick for me.

YOU CAN DO THIS! You're worth it!

Are you checking you BS after meals? This will give you immediate feed back. A small treat is usually ok the post BS check will let you know. However pigging out will result in long time for the BS to get down causing damage the entire time it is too high.

If you are pre-diabetic you probably are insulin resistant, make sure to keep your fat intake on the low side, fat interferes with your cells ability to use the insulin you have. While its good to include a protein every time you eat make, sure its low fat.

Diabetes is a condition that gets worse as you get older, you need to get it under control now so as to delay its effects as you age.

Something else that occurred to me is that a day or two of high carb meals raises my cravings and lowers my mood so I despair easier.
The Not caring is part of having to many carbs. force yourself to eat more protein with less carbs and you'll find your mojo again. LOL your mood will elevate and your determination will return. it's a daily balancing act. Keep on muscling through to what you know works and you'll be back on track in a day or two. you haven't fallen into a pit that is SOO deep, you're just sitting on your butt so it LOOKS deep.

Eat right and you'll be on your feet again and able to step right out.

Your last lines are so important. Remember that you did it! Also that people mean to tell you good things but watch that you don't get lost in what they say. I have been there and it's so easy to lose what you have done for yourself. No more kicking yourself - you are and can keep going. You also can have something when you want it and then keep going. If you hit bottom once in awhile you can go back to the top! The first thing right is talking to people that also care. We do and you are one more of us that has succeeded and can continue to succeed on a daily basis. Hang on for yourself and it motivates us all.

The problem with despair is that "not caring" is the easiest way to deal with it. My guess is that you really DO care, and just don't know how to prevent that slide into despair tomorrow or the next day.

You need people, lots of people. You don't have to be alone in misery, there are lots of us here who have been where you are. As a community of fellow journeyers, we are here to pull you out. All you have to do is ask. I have found that taking 20 mins when the downward pressure begins, and getting here on Spark, gets me through. Read message boards, read articles and blogs. That's why Spark give points for each thing you read and do. It is just another little boost to get you past the entrance to the despair chute. It WILL pass, or none of us would be here.

Stay close!

Make sure you're eating protein with you meals/snacks. Make sure you're getting enough water to drink.
Make sure you're getting in your exercise daily.

All three really helps to keep you blood sugar down.

Mostly one day isn't gonna hurt. Move one and work on it from here on out.

oh my..
as my endo would say and is fond of saying on a regular basis there are NO PRE-DIABETICS..you are diabetic and you have to gird up and act like one..however
please don't put all that hard work aside and let it go to WAIST do what kitty says and add protein to stuff
you don't have to starve yourself of goodies..my doc says have some when you are faced with a deal like you were but accept no excuses you needed to stop it after the day of eating (one day of eating never caused any permanent weight gain believe me)..just know and you have started the ball rolling by coming here and and talking about it
YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO..AND DRINK THAT WATER INSTEAD and for info i noticed sugar-free crystal light cranberry mix on the grocery shelves this week no carbs in that for sure..just back off and do what you did
let me tell you a little tale here..i hit a plateau 40 pounds out from goal..it ended up being 9 months long right here at sparkpeople NEVER GIVE UP i had people right and left including a whole slew of docs telling me you know you look great you don't need to continue to lose just maintain hah nine months and i came here daily and stuck it out maintaining that diet knowing that was essential to my well-being..well when it started down again that 40 pounds just slid off 378-105 and maintaining now for over two years right here mostly daily too still and i am not going back..yep i have those days just like the one you had but as i said that is not permanent weight
ACCEPT NO EXCUSES..EVER..and get with it again and time's a-wastin' for sure

try eating more protein and avoid the carbs til you gain control. Protein will help you fill up and not shoot your insulin higher. High insulin makes you "High" but they it can often fall quickly leaving you starving for more... more carbs.

I think I'm in trouble. I've gone back to eating. Worse, I've almost gone back to not caring, but I hope that isn't so. I've been eating since Saturday night, a wonderful barbecue with luscious desserts and everyone saying Oh but you've lost so much weight! I agreed...oh the joy!...so I ate goodies, figuring the alarm was over, and ok so I didn't make it as far as I wanted to but I was so sick of it. Then I kept eating Sunday, everything I'd been craving since March. Yesterday was work. I slowed down and scolded myself. But last night I was back at it, making piles of toast with at least sugar free jam but still! Today I was back to "good"... but now I'm hungry and craving!

This is the danger point. I recognize it. I was only pre-diabetic when I started, but a weird pre-D the doctor said because my FBS numbers were too high for my weight. I was also told recently NOT to go back to binging, ever, because even if a pre-diabetic dodges the bullet, you must continue to *think* like a diabetic, because it will always be there, latent.

So what I fear is this crucial juncture, where I've lost the weight, and decide I WANT those brownies or cupcakes, what the bleep. In the past, if I lost even a little weight I would always backslide again. Now this is the most weight I've lost but the same fear is back...BACKSLIDING. It's what has always happened.

Have you experienced this? This point that in a way is the most dangerous because you think you've done it & can now quit? Thanks for listening to this rant. At least in writing this my hands were busy and not reaching for food. Arghh!
